Book Description
To celebrate its centenary, Steuben is planning a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York-together with this companion book-showcasing its most glamorous and sophisticated creations from the '30s through the '60s. The exhibition and book explore a remarkable chapter in the history of both America's premier crystal and the modern movement in art and design in New York City.
Monumental bowls, stemware, and exquisitely sculpted and copper-wheel-engraved pieces from Steuben's elite mid-century lines are featured in this stunning volume. A few of the highlights include Sidney Waugh's famous Gazelle Bowl and George Thompson's Galapagos Bowl, as well as works by such celebrated artists as Salvador Dalí and Isamu Noguchi. Black-and-white photographs of Steuben glass masterworks are combined with vintage photographs and ephemera from Steuben's archive that capture the look and feel of a glittering era in New York City's life and art.

very few advices..........2005-03-19
This book was a disappointment... Yes of course McCartney is talking about travel photography and gives a few -good- advices but the book is a real pain to read. She keeps talking about herself and how great she is and how many countries she traveled and another couples of very useless stories. Also some points are very discutable.... p23 "You don't have to be handsome or beautiful to be a successful photographer, but you should strive to be as physically attractive and well-groomed as you can be."
To conclude, there are very few photographies, B/W, outdated and some of them not very interesting at all.
Excellent and very thorough, some color photos would be nice.......2003-07-16
If you want to dive into the world of travel photography or brush up this is an excellent book. It is full of information, not only on the technical side with lighting tips with the use of flash and film, the difference in what to expect between color and black and white, but also includes tidbits on where to travel, suggestions on what to carry to minimise loss of luggage. In addition the self assignments are instructive and very useful. One minor quirk the lack of color photos, i guess this was done to keep the price of the book down given its size but a few color photos would have added emphasis espicially when discussing general color filter use!
Is there a more enjoyable photography author? No!.......2002-04-30
Susan McCartney obviously loves her work and it shows in everything she writes. She willingly shares her vast experience and knowledge in a straightforward and enthusiastic style that makes all of her books a pleasure to read. In fact, her love of photography and willingness to share her knowledge infuses her writing to the extent that even topics as well traversed as travel photography (and check out her book on Flash Photography which is also excellent) become fresh and exciting to read about again and again.
Only complaint is they should have included color plates to really show the results the author accomplishes in her own work rather than the dreary black and white printing throughout the book. I certainly would have paid the extra few bucks for that.
Fantastic Travel Companion.......2001-09-06
Have made my way through several books on travel photography lately, undoubtedly the best I have read!! There are many other books available which are useless when it comes to being practical. This book is not a picture book, just very informative. Recently I went away for another trip overseas and actually lugged this book along for the ride. Susan lets you in on good places to start for every major country in the world and also places to avoid...incredibally usefull. More handy then a 'lonely planet' for photographers.
Travel Photography by Susan McCartney.......2001-08-26
This book not only reveals the nuts and bolts of travel photography and is a "must read" for those interested or planning to become travel photographers; it is a complete course in photography. I consider this book one of the most informative that I have read on the subject. Susan McCartney reveals not only how to photograph, what equipment she uses, but the fine details which most photographers keep to themselves. Ths book not only should be read, but reread until the material is recorded in one's mind like the tradecraft of any profession. A five star rating for this books is what I think it deserves.

Review fore the Peanuts golfers.......2006-01-17
Funny! This is not an instruction book on how to play golf.
It is about how you ALREADY play the game. A must for any
golfer's collection.

Book Description
'Music as Concept and Practice in the Late Middle Ages' is an entirely new addition to the New Oxford History of Music series rather than a revision of the volume's predecessor published in 1960. It takes account not only of the developments in late-medieval music scholarship during the latter decades of the twentieth century, but also of the experience gained through significant changes in the performance practice of the late-medieval repertory witnessed during this period. All the chapters include areas of discussion whose coverage in the series hitherto has been either wholly lacking or, at best, marginal: Muslim and Jewish musical traditions of the Middle Ages, late-medieval office chant, medieval dance music, musical instruments in society, music in Central and Eastern Europe, music theory of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, music and early Renaissance humanism. The first chapter and the last three present the conceptualization of music in speculative theory, philosophy, compositional and didactic practice, and musical historiography. Four chapters, and part of the first, illustrate important musical repertories and genres as they were developed within diverse societies. The eight authors - all of them with a long-standing interest in their respective subjects - have created through their collaboration a blend of mature scholarship and original investigation. The volume's novelty of approach and content is complemented by a firm anchorage in the specialist literature and documentary source material. Today, no single view of 'the Middle Ages' can be acceptable to the musician or to the historian. The present volume, which addresses itself to both, provides solid information on formerly marginal themes, and advocates further exploration of the 'other' Middle Ages.

Mage background for D&D.......2001-10-17
The book is not their best handbook. It would be about 5th. And really does not have any good kits like the thiefs or Bards etc. The main thing to note is that D&D is now on its 3rd edition; and this book is for the 2nd. So really not practical. But can only be used for background.
This handbook has a good chapter on roleplaying mages and on spell research as well as spellcasting under adverse conditions. This book is good for customizing a campaign or making new spells, items, or schools as well. There are also a couple of new spells.
Good source for wizard lovers!.......2001-09-06
This was one of my first D&D and I still use it. It's a good information source and has several funny things.
The spells are good.......2001-01-10
This ain't the best of the complete class books. I found most of the kits not very useful, and the description of the specialists was nothing more but repeating the Player's handbook - let's not mention the "special abilities" for specialist mages (I'm talking about a +1 save vs alteration magic at level 17 here!). If you want some more spells, especially some necormancy, then get this book, it has some really cool spells in it. But that's about all.
A good read, but not particularly game-enhancing.......2000-08-10
This book contains a large amount of enjoyable information on the various schools of magic and provides a host of kits, but if you have a clear idea of what your character is like, none of it is really going to enhance your enjoyment of the game. The methods for researching new spells given are pointless, you could have invented much better rules yourself. There are also far too few new items (in fact, there are basically NO new items).
Having said that, the new spells are worthwhile, and the afflictions are pretty cool. If you are an avid wizard fan, a good and recommended purchase, but it does not really provide as much "meat" as it should do.
Not one of the better handbooks.......2000-07-08
This book is definitely not essential. The new spells are nice and would be the only reason to need this book. The kits are not very interesting and don't even compare to the ones in the fighter's, thieves', and bard's handbooks.
However, if you love magic users then you will enjoy the handbook. There is a good chapter on roleplaying mages and on spell research as well as spellcasting under adverse conditions. This book is good for customizing a campaign or making new spells, items, or schools as well. But, for those of us that don't feel the need to go so indepth into to the world of spellcraft, this book won't be missed.

Customer Reviews:
Insulting title.......2007-07-25
I always find it "interesting" that certain topics feel the need to have "special instruction" for women.... i.e., "investing for women", "car repair for women", and now "buying a home for women". I guess women are more ignorant when it comes to these topics? They need to be spoken to differently? Buying a home is buying a home, and the issues are no different for men and women. SURE, maybe women are treated differently by brokers, mortgage lenders, etc., but then, if you have been a woman your whole life(!), you have probably already figured out how to handle yourself in the world. I feel books such as this one are just pandering and feeding into the whole idea that women are somehow more "fragile" and need to be spoken to like little children, and in simple, short phrases, so that their "delicate minds" don't overload. I find such a mentality insulting and ignorant, and just a cheap ploy by the authors to get certain susceptible women to buy their product.
Too many inaccuracies!!.......2007-07-22
As a Realtor looking at the information Summers provides, it seems that no one proof read what she wrote. There are typos throughout. And if the rest of it is as accurate as her section on using Realtors, wow! She says on p 113 that if the Jones have a house worth $100,000, they must sell it for $120,000 to pay the 6% commission. $20,000 is not 6% of $120,000! The commission is not $12,000 as she says. That's 10%. Furthermore, the house is worth what it's worth whether a real estate agent is involved or not. No money is added to the price to pay a commission. Yes, you can negotiate a commission, but it's not the buyer's concern since the buyer doesn't pay it. And if the home is for sale by owner, you can bet that the homeowner wants that phantom "commission" money for him or herself, and will not share it with the buyer.
I was thinking about using this book to educate my buyers who are mostly women first-time homebuyers. But the information is so wrong, it would be impossible to correct it. It's obvious that Ms Summers is a writer who gathered a lot of info and put it together, but has little day-to-day experience with the subject. If she thinks the commission is $12,000 and my share is $6000, I would very much like to sell her a house! (It's more like $2000 that goes to the agent.)
Undecided.......2007-05-17
I received this book recently and at first site I was disappointed. It looks poorly put together - the front cover looks like it is a photocopy of another and the pages seem to be of low quality.
However, the topics covered in the book seem to be good and I'm looking forward to diving into the book soon.
OK book.......2007-05-15
Some of the information is basic and repetitive from what others are saying but I found it slightly helpful for me. I am looking to purchase my 1st home solo soon....
Informational, but title does not suit content..........2006-08-27
Buying Solo was the first book I read on home-buying. There were helpful tables given to calculate morgtage payments and affordability factors, but nothing that you couldn't find online or in other books. I'm not sure how many books regarding this topic the other reviewers read, but I was surprised to see so many gave this book five stars.
I read this book from cover to cover and only recall one page that suggested this was a book for women to buy solo. I can sum it up for you in one sentence: Be confident, don't let the realtors break your spirit just because they have more faith in couples with twice the income.
Otherwise it's all the same material as all other home-buying books.
