Book Description

In 1972, when the packing and crating for a major exhibition made it impossible for him to work in his sculpture studios, Henry Moore retreated to a small studio that looks out on a sheep meadow. Over the course of several months, as sheep were suckled and sheared, Moore produced this delightful flock of sketches and drawings. Sheep are as much a commonplace of the English countryside as hedgerows, but Moore looked at them afresh. Here are ewes nurturing their lambs, lambs playing in the meadow, and the swollen stateliness of sheep with full coats of wool. Many of the sketches evoke themes that are important in all Moore's work. The depiction of a ewe and lamb, for instance, suggests the mother-and-child theme often evoked in Moore's sculpture by a large form sheltering a smaller one. Henry Moore presented the sketchbook to his daughter, Mary. In this facsimile edition, first created under Moore's personal supervision, Mary's little lambs will charm anyone who sees these tender, vigorous drawings.

This book is one of the most helpful sources to understanding and looking at Henry Moore's world, work and learning his regard for the objects of reality he transformed into his sculptures. It is truly amazing and it is the actual sketchbook of his very own sheep. It is a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A Filmmaking Insider Talks About His Craft.......2001-08-23

This is a fascinating look inside filmmaking. Most of the examples are from the 1960s and 1970s, but that does not lessen the impact or relevance.

The author is a master of the film editing craft. He also writes with insight and emotion. As you read, you'll learn how a film is "cut", how a film evolves, and what makes a film "work."

This book deserves a place in the bookcase of any student of the filmmaking art or craft.

4 out of 5 stars A veteren film editor shares his life.......2000-08-07

Rosenblum edited feature films from the late 50s until early 80s, and is most noted for his collaborative efforts with Woody Allen in the 1970s. But his most interesting stories in the book are from a decade earlier when he was still experimenting. Though, I have only seen about half of the movies Rosenblum writes of, it makes the stories no less fascinating.

Rosenblum's major accomplishment in the book is to shed light on the importance of the film editor in motion pictures. He's not wrong in stating that their efforts have been largely ignored by critics and the public at large. What's interesting is that the editor as an influence in film is rarely even discussed by film critics and historians. It's probably because people are largely unsure of what an editor's true contributions are to any one motion picture.

Through the course of the book, Rosenblum takes apart THE RAID ON MINSKY'S, THE PAWNBROKER, and ANNIE HALL in depth. He also gives examples of how much an initial cut of a film can differ from the final cut.

I found the book quite informative, and learned more about film editing than I had expected.

5 out of 5 stars Six tales of the winter of Ogami Itto's discontent.......2002-10-29

"Chains of Death," Volume 8 in the Lone Wolf and Cub manga epic by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, offers something of a change of pace as Ogami Itto's walk on the Assassin's Road has several diversions:

        (39) "Tidings of the Geese" is a short tale in which one of the Shogun's inspectors informs Ogami Itto that the Yagyu have sent assassins to kill Lord Hotta. The fight sequence involves a desperate ploy by the Yagyu. Lone Wolf is not an assassin in this one, for, as he observes: "So long as the Yagyu scheme in the shadows of the shogunate, there can be no return to enlightened rule. Nor any end to our quest."

        (40) "The Frozen Crane" has Lone Wolf and Cub coming upon a woman and her dead husband's younger brother who have finally avenge his death. Ogami Itto refuses to bear witness to what has happened and has to teach the woman a lesson about the true quest for vengeance.

        (41) "Chains of Death" has the Yagyu using the Kurokuwa clan to try and kill Lone Wolf and Cub. This episode becomes a series of battles in the snow with Kojima's artwork carrying pretty much the entire story. The fact that Kurokuwa have finally submitted to the Yagyu is not lost on Ogami Itto. Visually the best story in this volume, the tale that gives the volume its title is not one of the more significant stories.

        (42) "The Infinite Path" tells the complete story of the duel that earned Ogami Itto the position of Kogi Kaishakunin. We knew the basics of the tale, but this telling involves a duel between Lone Wolf and Restsudo Yagyu. The flashback makes it clear that the reason why the Yagyu were so desperate to be Kogi Kaishakunin could offer Lone Wolf an end to his quest.

        (43) "Thread of Tears" finds Ogami Itto meditating at a temple while Daigoro meets a young widow. However, this is no chance meeting for Lone Wolf had killed her husband and she has been waiting to cross his path to ask for a duel. While watching the duel Daigoro has his own, rather chilling test.

        (44) "Beku-no-ji" is the only tale in this volume where the story deals with Lone Wolf being hired as an assassin. The job offer is as much of a focal point of the story as the assassination at the end. Again, Ogami Itto's sense of honor provides insight into his walk on the assassin's road.

One other thing that most of these stories have in common is that most of them take place in winter. I am not sure at this point how much we are supposed to pay attention to the turning of the seasons; then again, perhaps I am wrong to assume that these stories are being told in chronological order. I will have to contemplate this in the silence of my room after I read tonight's episode. The ability of Koike and Kojima to maintain this high quality of graphic narrative is most impressive. This manga deserves every accolade it has received.

5 out of 5 stars The masterpiece of Japanese manga.......2002-08-03

The saga of Lone Wolf and Cub should be in the collection of anybody with an interest in Bushido, the Japanese warrior philosophy. Goseki Kojima's powerful storytelling and the late Kazuo Koike's brutal visuals have captured the essence of the quest of an honourable man in the cruel world of Shogun-era Japan. There are many manga series, but none better than Lone Wolf and Cub.

5 out of 5 stars "truly an assassins blade"..........2001-08-23

This is a pivotal volume in the tale of 'Lone wolf and Cub'. Previous volumes have given sketchy details as to Ogami Itto's history, how he was drawn into conflict with the Yagyu - but in this episode the nature of his rise to the position of Executioner for the Shogun is described. This key element to the tale makes clear why the Yagyu harbor against him a burning fury. Itto and Diagoro will face the Yagyu again, as they fling more resuorces against him - the tension is eased as several other small vignettes tell tales of others with whom he comes into contact with. Critical to the series, this is again, the continuation of a fabulous tale...

Nor any end to our quest." The highlight of the fighting is an attempt to double team Lone Wolf; of course, it fails, but we shall see more of this in the future.

        (40) "The Frozen Crane" has Lone Wolf and Cub coming upon a woman and her dead husband's younger brother who have finally avenge his death. Ogami Itto refuses to bear witness to what has happened and has to teach the woman a lesson about the true quest for vengeance. The frozen crane reepresents the beauty of the desperate struggle to surviveon courage alone.

        (41) "Chains of Death" has the Yagyu using the Kurokuwa clan to try and kill Lone Wolf and Cub. This episode becomes a series of battles in the snow with Kojima's artwork carrying pretty much the entire story. The climax has six attackers using chains to fence in and bind Ogami Itto.

This is one of the more important stories in terms of providing key pieces in the background of the jounrey on the Assassin's Road.

The story is another grim reminder that in following the whtie way of their quest, father and son accept all that is to come, all chance, all fortune. The story also represents has a nice little twist at the end.

        (44) "Beku-no-ji" is the only tale in this volume where the story deals with Lone Wolf being hired as an assassin. The job offer is as much of a focal point of the story as the assassination at the end. Again, Ogami Itto proves that he can unravel the truth from the lies that men tell him and once more his sense of honor provides insight into his walk on the assassin's road.

The first time around I read a story a night, taking months to get through all 28 volumes. Now I am going through the epic again, reading a couple of stories a day, and I have to say I am just as impressed the second time around.

“Show me Heaven! I have seen hell.” —Patricia Neal

Larry King, world-famous radio and television personality, has asked the talented, the beautiful, the wise, and the rich a question all of us have pondered: How would you like to be remembered after your death? The result is REMEMBER ME WHEN I'M GONE, an entertaining and eloquent collection of “last words” from people in the arts, in politics, in sports, and in business, mostly still alive. In telling and moving reflections, often leavened by self-deprecating humor, these celebrities look back on their lives, their ambitions, their mistakes, and their accomplishments.

The contributions range from pithy one-liners by Yogi Berra (“It’s over.”), Dave Barry, George Carlin, and Liz Smith (“Excuse my dust!”); to inspired sketches by Stephen King and Peter Falk; to candid reflections from Don Shula, Fred Rogers, and Chevy Chase; to hilarious rants from Margaret Cho and Tommy Lee; and a last request by Arthur Hailey.

I was among the saddest to hear of Larry King's passing in 1987. I had long been a fan of his nonsensical ramblings in USA Today and knew that I might miss those columns unless they replaced it with something superior like a Jumble or a Suduko puzzle. Imagine my surprise to see him on CNN almost 20 years later. Alive ... well sort of alive. Was he cryogenically thawed out? Let this be a warning to all of you in frozen states ... it does NOT always work out.

And this book is just fabulous, a collection of self-serving, inane babblings by the assistants of famous people. Because famous people most certainly do not have the time to write such heartfelt and sincere passages ... they're just not capable of it. It's outside their skill set. So don't be angry with them, just accept them for who they are ... famous friends of Larry King, columnist, talk show host, suspenders-wearer.

4 out of 5 stars Inanity, vanity a little wisdom and a few laughs .......2005-09-22

This book is built on an interesting idea. Larry King asks three- hundred people, most of them American celebrities from the worlds of sports, entertainment, business, journalism, music, comedy, writing ,acting, politics, science and education what message they would leave behind and wish to be remembered by.
Some take this lightly and answer in a quick one- liner or even a word- some seem overly burdened by their own importance, but many hit ' right notes' and quite a few have a real humor.
This is the kind of work which one skims, jumps back and forth in, looking for something interesting. Most are misses, but some are scores, and it is the scores that make the book worthwhile.
A few examples follow which I found of some value.

" For years I've been claiming ,"I'm only human. I'm only human." Maybe now you'll believe me." SHELLY BERMAN

" I hope I see you later." MAUREEN STAPLETON

"He did his best when no one was watching." BOB COUSY

          "Jim who?' JIM BOUTON

" I want to be remember as a good guy one who always helped others in need. JOE FRAZIER

" The best is yet to come." BEVERLY SILLS

" He was never boring. He said out loud what others whispered. He challenged authority; the higher the authority, the stronger the challenge. He made the legal system more acceptable to the public He taught thousands of students and educated even more readers and viewers. He listened best with his mouth open. He was fun to be with. Well, this is definitely a page turner and a flip through and a go back and read again and share and tell people they just have to read it.

Imagine, so many wrote their last words poetically. Some wrote pages while others wrote short. "I demand a recount." "Mispronounced dead on arrival." And perhaps you'll guess who wrote one word "Imagine!"

My absolute favorite, laugh out loud epitath--

When my time on earth is done
And I have breathed my last
I want them to bury me upside down
So my critics can kiss my ass

          5 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2004-04-19

This is definately one of the most entertaining reads all year.
The telling, moving, and sometimes hilarious reflections kept me turning the page. It was tough for me to put down! This book is a real treasure. Debbie Farmer, author of 'Don't Put Lipstick on the Cat'

5 out of 5 stars Celebrities' last words.......2004-04-17

When you pass on from this life, what would you want people to say about you? Larry King asked that question of over 300 celebrities, and the result is "Remember Me When I'm Gone," a fascinating compendium of epitaphs and obituaries penned by the still living about themselves. The celebrities include actors, authors, business people, journalists, artists, musicians, politicians, and scientists. The contributions run the gamut: funny, spiritual, laudatory, biographical, comforting, witty, and philosphical. Appropriately enough, there are some song lyrics from songwriters, cartoons from cartoonists, comic epitaphs from comedians, and poetry from writers. Fred Rogers composed his contribution before his death, when he knew he was seriously ill. Larry King provided his own epitaph as well. It was tough for me to select a few examples from so many interesting contributions, but here goes:

Joanna Barnes: At Last - A Parking Space!
          Arnold Schwarzenegger: I had fun.
Ted Turner: I have nothing more to say.
Beverly Sills: The best is yet to come.
Robin Leach: Hi, this is Robin Leach standing outside the pearly gates!
Jim Davis: I would like to be remembered as someone who was extremely old.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger: How arrogant to write your own epitaph.

This book displays a lot of wit and wisdom on a sobering topic, and I recommend it as an entertaining and enlightening read.

1 out of 5 stars Distortion of history.......2005-07-20

A book about Pearl Harbor, the Movie should be a book *about* Pearl Harbor, the Movie! Here, there are a few pages of cast bio in the front, and about 20 pages of information of how the movie was made at the back (well, a paragraph or two of information per page, and lots of photos). In between is the 'real' history of the attack on Pearl Harbor...but it is illustrated by scenes from the movie - which really bore little relationship to the actual events and to use them to illustrate those events is horrible! At the very least, a photo of the real General Doolittle should have been put beside that of Alec Baldwin (who portrayed him) a photo of the real Genda beside that of Tagawa, who portrayed him), etc. This book succeeds neither as a history of Pearl Harbor, nor as a Making of the Movie.

4 out of 5 stars OK Book to a just OK movie.......2004-07-01

This is an OK book. The movie was just OK. The book is a little better. There are very good photos in this book if you like the movie. That's what I like about it.

5 out of 5 stars What goes into a movie..........2003-11-02

This book does not tell the story of Pearl Harbor;nor does it claim to.What we have here, is a book showing what went into making this movie about Pearl Harbor and it does it very well. The artwork, photos of actors at work, scenes being set up,storyboards, maps, drawings, special effects set-ups,equipment mock-ups and replicas, original photos, etc.are all combined to make this an excellent portrayal of all that goes into recreating an event of such monumental proportions.

1 out of 5 stars NEVER LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY.......2001-12-09

Now how did michael eisner (i.e., of Disney, Inc.) know two or so years ago that 'war scholars' would 'discover' that the Japanese had broken the US code and were forced into attacking the hardline United States(see LA Times 12/8/01)! Is nothing sacred ? Is everything up for sale ? YES. YES.

More discouragening is the gullable US public. Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, M.Safer(all millionaires by the way) etc etc are simply reading/reporting (entertaining) what they are instructed to report by their corporate owners. A new twist, a new story to sell. Its the corporate ethic: if it is profitable it is good.

You know, at least Howard Stearn doesn't pretend to be a 'credible journalist': Its not about truth its about money and big boobs.

          5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2001-11-18

This Book was so great, and so was the movie. A must have for world war 2 and movie fans!

                Book Description

This is not only the first life-and-works on Musorgsky in English for over half a century but also the largest such study of the composer ever to have appeared outside Russia. Mussorgsky was one of the towering figures of nineteenth century Russian music - but also one of the most tragic. Largely an amateur with no systematic training in composition, he nevertheless emerged in his first opera, Boris Godunov, as a supreme musical dramatist, presenting here (and in certain of his piano pieces in Pictures at an Exhibition) some of the most startlingly original of all song composers, with a prodigious gift for uncovering the emotional content of a text. His failure to complete his two remaining operas, Khovanshchina and Sorochintsy Fair, before his premature death from alcohol poisoning is one of music's greatest tragedies.

4 out of 5 stars Brown delivers a glimpse into Musorgsky's troubled mind.......2006-05-09

When dealing with a composer whose works were so erratic and often incomplete, writing a combined biography and analysis of his works is not an easy task. Brown approaches this with sensible organization, alternating between chapters that detail Mussorgsky's life and focus on his individual compositions of important note. Significant amounts of the book are even devoted to the half-finished, aborted, or otherwise incomplete works of the composer. This is justified since these works provide some insight into Mussorgsky's compositional process, although it is sometimes presented at a level too dense for the amateur musician. Another area of focus is Mussorgsky's relationships in the "mighty handful" with specific members, and also to the RMS (Russian Music Society) and FMS (Free Music Society).

Brown's command of the English language is certainly nothing to dismiss as his diction and syntax are colorful, rich, and flowing. He often refers to Mussorgsky's compositional capacity as his "musical armory", a fitting metaphor perhaps to capture the essence of violence that often arises in Mussorgsky's works, as well as his hostility toward western music.

The biographical portions of the book are densely pocked with excerpts from letters and memoirs belonging to the most influential people in Mussorgsky's life, and Mussorgsky himself. Brown sometimes acts merely as a guide to weave all of these observations and discourses together to give the reader an accurate characterization of the composer. Of course, a near inexhaustible amount of documents could probably be relevantly cited, and it is Brown's job to attempt to extract what is important and create an unbiased recollection. There is one thing in particular that seems to be suspiciously highlighted in the later years of Mussorgsky's life, and that is his relationship with Cesar Cui. The latter composer seems to recognize his inferiority to the other members of the kuchka as the years wane on, and he particularly seems to react hostilely toward Mussorgsky. Brown cites his criticisms increasingly and also Mussorgsky's reactions, which tend toward anger and insult. It seems strange that these two that share such brotherhood in their musical circle would lash out with such negativism. Brown even notes that Cui's criticism continues near into Mussorgsky's death, almost suggesting some form of the mythical Mozart-Sallieri relationship. Perhaps Brown subconsciously wished to add a bit more tension to his biography (which, as a biography - often lacks the interest of fiction), and he certainly succeeds in portraying Cui as the villain in Mussorgsky's life

One shortcoming I see is the failure of the book to explain Mussorgsky's knowledge of music theory. Brown uses vague adjectives such as "uneducated, intuitive, unrefined" etc. to define Mussorgsky's compositional finesse, but rarely goes into any more detail. It is difficult to tell how Mussorgsky thought when he composed. Did he have knowledge of chord theory and progression, so that he could explain and "break down" his music rather than just let it flow from his mind in chaos? Did he discover these things through his own intuitiveness but with a flare of originality? It becomes apparent that Mussorgsky begins to revel in his own ignorance of western music theory, idealizing the "natural" composer as the superior filter for music.

Lastly, either due to a lack of evidence or because Brown considered it irrelevant, Mussorgsky's mental illness is largely left ambiguous. A few letters give strange metaphorical accounts of Mussorgsky's bouts of mental anguish, but they fail to list any real symptoms. I would consider the mental condition of a composer to be the primary factor contributing to the music he wrote. The book should have an appendix if not a chapter at lease speculating what the causes or true symptoms of Mussorgsky's periodic mental distress were.

In its entirety, the book succeeds in giving the reader a strong foundation of Mussorgsky as a composer. Brown highlights his relationships with other Russian composers and musicians of the time, his financial and residential situations, his musical revelations and awakenings (as shown by his letters), and the context in which each of his works, completed or not, arise.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 'Musorgsky' for the General Reader.......2003-06-25

David Brown's 'Musorgsky' appears in the Oxford University Press's 'The Master Musicians' series and replaces the older volume in that series started by M. D. Calvocoressi before his death in 1944 and finished by Gerald Abraham, published in 1946. There has been no major life-and-works of Modest Musorgsky (1839-1881) in English since then, although Richard Taruskin's scholarly 'Musorgsky,' intended for a narrower musicologically-informed audience, was published in 1992. This volume has musical examples and some reasonably detailed discussion of musical points in Musorgsky's works, but it is certainly not beyond the reach of the general reader.

Musorgsky's life is detailed throughout the book but there is little that is gossipy or speculative. Much more attention is paid to the origin and development of Musorgsky's art, with a clear exposition of musical and psychological influences by such figures are Dargomizhky, Glinka, Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Alexander Serov, Vladimir Stasov and others. The lengthy, often obscure and confusing chronology of 'Boris Godunov' is set out logically and lucidly; Brown's exposition of its difficult gestation certainly cleared up some of my confusion in this regard. There is a good deal of explanation of how and where Musorgky cannibalized earlier works, inserting whole passages in the works by which he is now primarily known. There is a fascinating discussion of how he slowly developed his musical 'fingerprints,' with examples. Several chapters are devoted to the composition of his numerous and still undervalued songs. And we get psychologically and musically insightful chapters on 'Night on Bald Mountain' (more properly 'St. John's Night on Bare Mountain') and 'Pictures at an Exhibition.' The sad story of the inability to complete 'Khovanshchina' and 'Sorochintsy Fair' is told, along with the related heart-breaking drama of Musorgky's decline and death.

In Musorgsky's too-short life he wrote at least three undisputed popular masterpieces - 'Boris,' 'Night on Bare Mountain,' and 'Pictures'- and those who love these pieces, and others, owe it to themselves to become more familiar with the life of the man behind these favorites. This book provides the kind of framework that makes those works more alive for the listener.

                Recommended.

                  Book Description

This is a brief biography of Russia's greatest musical dramatist, Modest Musorgsky (1839-1881), known the world over for his opera Boris Godunov, for his innovative realistic art songs, and for his pianistic work "Pictures at an Exhibition." Yet during his life Musorgsky had no institutional connections, no "degree," no family of his own, not even a permanent address. This book emphasizes the psychological and economic factors that contributed to the composer's remarkable autodidactic rise and tragic, premature end.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly easy!.......2007-10-03

I found this book to be an excellent reference for starting your own medical billing service. It's much easier than I anticipated, and cheaper too. This book tells you step-by-step how to do things, it couldn't be any easier to follow.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start their own business.

2 out of 5 stars Not what you need to start a business.......2005-05-22

This book served as a general overview of the billing from home business, but does not give details on getting started. Not a good book to rely on if your looking to start your own business.

3 out of 5 stars Start your research .......2005-02-06

This was a very comprehensive book however the authors have never started their own business; they tend to rely on interviews from several business owners across the country. The book is very organized but several sections assumes that reader will instantly understand all technical terms. I would suggest that the authors include actual forms as opposed to just referring to them, include 2-3 other formats of suggested letters and lengthen the appendix to more than 3 pages.
This is a good book for anyone looking to review the industry, not for those truly interested in starting their own company.
