Henry VIII and His Wives.......2005-05-06
If you enjoy paper dolls and are interested in English history, you'll love this book. Tom Tierney has captured the period with beautifully rendered portraits of Henry VIII and his wives.
I did feel however, that the doll of Anne Boleyn didn't resemble any of her extant portraits, and some of the costumes were not based on paintings of the time, but were instead invented by the artist (eg Anne of Cleves's German costume, Catherine Parr's green gown).
Henry VIII and his Wives.......2004-05-05
this paper doll book is a must for fans of the king and his wives or for people who are in terested in the time period. With short biographies for all six wives and notes for all there outfits this is a perfect set. In this book there are three versions of the king, the beginning of his reign, his middle age, and in his later days. For each doll there are outfits that are very detailed and the dolls look magnificent. This is a MUST and i HIGHLY recommend this book.
Lovely Book Paper Dolls!.......2002-12-03
This is a beautiful book of paper dolls of Henry VIII and his Wives. It's full of nice little details but in the front page Jane Seymour have one of the dress of Catherine of Aragon and Catherine got one of the costume of Jane and Catherine Howard got one of the dress of Jane.
Tom Tierney - the modern Holbein.......2000-03-30
I have other books by Mr. Tierney, but this is one that I recommend most highly... Mr. Tierney does an exquisite job of rendering one of my all time favorite historical periods with his usual flair, and yet each figure is easily recognizable. Like Hans Holbein, the court painter for Henry VIII, he delivers ART!
Another fun paper doll set from Dover.......2000-02-02
This is an enjoyable paper doll book containing standard size paper dolls (about the same general size as other paper doll books made by Dover). This set depicts Henry VII in three dolls; two with two sets of clothing, one with only one, and his six wives (Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, Catherine Parr) with two sets of clothing each. It also includes historical information that I found very interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2005-05-20
I'm a long time Mac user and have been using iPhoto since it came out. This book really hits every aspect of the program, and tells not only what's there, but how and why to use it. Examples are concise and relevant. This book is a good book for an advanced iPhoto user, and a must have for the beginner. Apple should include a copy of this book with every Mac.
I only found two points to comment on in the book:
1) You don't need to rename the iPhoto Library folder or use any third party tools to maintain multiple iPhoto Libraries. You can simply hold down the Option key when launching iPhoto and iPhoto will ask if you want to create a new library or find an existing one. This worked with iPhoto 4.
2) One thing users can do to improve the performance of iPhoto is to turn off the Drop shadow option in the Appearance preference. I don't think he mentioned that.
Otherwise he hit everything a person using iPhoto needs to know about. Great book!

The third installment in Checker's ambitious year-by-year reprinting of the Milton Caniff classic, these action-packed strips circa 1949 are among the best Caniff ever produced.
Customer Reviews:
High adventure and jingoism.......2007-02-18
My reviews for the first two issues of Checker's Steve Canyon series would suggest that my mind is made up in advance in its favour. Actually, the strip has a couple of strikes against it: 1) the hero is a little bland and too iconically good for my tastes and 2) while patriotism may have its place, if it crosses into jingoism it becomes an irritant. However, the sidekick Happy Easter provides a little peanut butter and jelly to Canyon's white bread, and the patriotism had been somewhat discreet up to this point, being limited to the bad guys' animosity to Yankee-ness and the good guys being paragons of virtue and know-how. The strip's great qualities overwhelm these minor irritants.
How Canyon's unwavering righteousness will navigate the sixties and its antiheroes, should the Checker series make it that far - and I hope it will - will be a very interesting meta-thread in which a fictional character is pitted against forces outside his semi-fictional world. It's a matter of record that this precipitated his creator's semi-retirement and the strip's decline. I hope the Checker series continues on through Steve Canyon's full run.
I was forewarned that the strip would be marred to some extent by the jingoism, which is what the patriotism turns into when it commandeers the storyline in the first thirty pages (three months (!)) of this issue where a young (and so far irritating) recruit to Canyon's team has to find the movie that is most representative of life in America, even soliciting readers' help for the task. There is also a paean to the freedoms in the USA by one character showing home movies; ironically, this was during the height of the McCarthy era. Nevertheless, the strip is a historical record and this plot detour has to be accepted part and parcel with it. Some seeds for what follows are sown in the meantime and the rest of the book is as entertaining as the others.
We are now equipped with enough hindsight to note the irony of the ode to the freedoms in the USA in a volume of strips that are concurrent with the height of the McCarthy era. As a historical record, the Canyon series could be an excellent backdrop to post-WWII American history as might be taught in high school or even college.
Consider the following sampling of topics the strip can inspire:
- communism and anti-communism;
- the comics syndicates and the various filters (including consideration of the readership itself) through which American culture must pass before reaching the reader's eye;
- the cigarette as a prop in movies and comics (did/does Big Tobacco finance this? does it represent emancipation, cool?);
- American foreign policy, real vs. perceived - is it the same thing?;
the rituals of courtship, growing up, gender-based roles;
- geography - where is (fictional) Damma?, what are the (not so fictional) people of the Bear?;
- the technological innovations that appear in the strip;
- the styles;
- the paucity of American blacks;
- references to real events;
- post-Pearl Harbor vs. post-9/11, followed up with comparisons between the threat of fascism, then communism, and today's threat of terrorism;
- the worldview - is it worldly or is it naïve? Consider the depictions and characterizations of other races.
This series can inspire a huge number of points, many of which are highly pertinent today. The painstaking research Caniff did for his creation makes it especially reliable.
The great strengths of the strip shine through: the stories are rich and eventful, the art stunning, the characters varied and interesting, and the locales as exotic as ever. Unlike many other strips, this one does not rely excessively on cheap devices, such as crazy coincidences, cheating on timelines or resorting to deus ex machina, all of which are replete in adventure strips, though some suspension of disbelief is required. Steve Canyon is the polished work of a seasoned master.

Buyer's regret.......2003-10-05
I bought the book thinking I could use it as the basis for a lecture in my history classes. The book is replete with factual errors. The worst error within the first 20 pages: "The Romans found competition for England from the Vikings. ... By 71 AD York, north of London, boasted a large population of Vikings." (pp. 19-20) There were no Vikings in the 1st century AD, thank you. And by the time the Vikings reached the British Isles in the late 8th century, there certainly were no Romans to compete with them. There are many other mistakes in this book.
I could have forgiven some factual errors (although placing the Vikings in England in the 1st century is difficult since this is very basic information taught in western civ and world history classes. I remind the reader that the author was a doctoral student at one time), but I was very disappointed with the pictures as well. It is simply very hard to find pictures of historical toilets. As the author correctly states, this is a taboo topic. I was therefore hoping to find pictures of Harappan toilets, for example. There are very few pictures indeed. Additionally, the illustrator has simply made up pictures that could be taken by readers as real medieval manuscripts.
There are some interesting facts in this book. But given the glaring errors that I found in the first five minutes of reading, I therefore have doubts about the accuracy of these interesting facts. We really do need a good book on the history of the toilet. But this one falls short.
You'd never think the world evolves around it.......2000-02-19
This is one of the best books I had the pleasure of reading! I suggest this book to everyone who wants to learn about unusual historical information of how human excrement was disposed of. If you think about, the human civilization did evolve because of the toilet. In fact, cities, including Seattle, were built because of the toilet. Highly recommend it!
The Bathroom Book about Toilets!.......2000-01-24
A delightfully quirky and informative read. The ultimate dissertation on the sociology of elimination. Ideal bathroom reading-no washroom should be without a copy of this book!
This book is Great!.......1999-12-15
What a fun book. A fascinating history of the toilet,with enough humor to keep you turning the pages as fast as possible. I think it is a great gift idea for the peron who has everything. A must for every bathroom

Excellent Reading Material........2006-02-18
As a lifelong fan on Al Pacino, I purchased this book and could not put it down. It gives you private insight into a very private man and details the trials that he endured to get to where he is now. A must have for any Pacino fan!
Great book about a great actor.......2003-08-17
This is a extremely well written book..andrew yule does a great job on this book which i can imagine was not too easy judging by how private al pacino is..al pacino is one of if not my favorite actor and i thought i knew about him but after reading this i feel like i really came way seeing al pacino in another light.
the book can be perceived as not a true bio by some as it doesn't go real deep into al's life...it mainly explores and reveals his work..but then you will find that al pacino's life is "the work"..al pacino is the definition of what a actor is..and you will see that after reading this book..the author yule is given access to lots of sources and it is a authorized bio..as he gives lots and lots of great quotes from marty bergman,charlie laughton,and pacino himself...which are great.
how it goes it is will basically go in order by all the work he's done and it will tell stories about what happened behind the scenes it will give quotes of all the people involved and will show what happened..then afterwards it will always show you what "professional" critics wrote about the work..which i think is a good idea..it sheds light into how the work was perceived at the time...
and what i really took to heart from this book is how much critics are scum..not that the author portrayed them as this..i just can't believe how much critics have without mercy assaulted and attacked pacino...pacino gives his blood to his work...he gives everything...he immerses himself so deeply into his characters that it is almost scary...and sometimes he will put so much work in and so much sweat and then you see these critics sitting on their fat butts just bashing his work..these talentless nobodies destroying all pacino has done..and it is really sad and really angers me..i have really never payed that much attention to "critics" but now i see just how disgusting these people are...to spit on someones art is shameful.
you will learn alot from this book..about al pacino and dustin hoffman and their quiet rivalry of sorts...you will learn about john cazale and james hayden who's careers and lives were ended too short..and you will learn alot about pacino and his work.
i highly reccommend this great book by andrew yule if you are a pacino fan or if you are just an actor or like acting..this should be in every actor's library as an example of what a true actor is.
Great Read.......2003-02-17
Al Pacino: A Life on the Wire is a great book! I am very impressed because even though Al Pacino went through a lot of hard times in his life, he made it. He is a real fighter, and he has proven that people should never give up; they must follow their dreams. Yule presented Al Pacino's life in general in an easy-to-follow way, and the reader can understand things well about Al Pacino as a person. I especially like Al's sense of humor, his passion for his job, and his attitude towards marriage. Al is definitely a free spirit and an accomplished actor!
Kirkus Review in error........1999-06-04
In response to the Kirkus Review of Life on the Wire: The book does not report that Al Pacino's mother left him at three. She died when Pacino was 22 years old. Pacino's father left the family when Pacino was 3. The book clearly states these facts.

Synopsis.......2007-07-09
Frank Marshall's watchwords were brilliancy and attack! For decades he was the leading USA grandmaster and he succeeded in scalping most of the world's elite during that time. Noted as a successful tournament rather than match player, Marshall's hit and run tactics will repay careful study by those who consider entering the hurly burly of tournament chess. For those content to sit by the fireside and play through an entertaining grandmaster game hours of enjoyment are to be derived from Marshall's blitz demolition of his opponents' carefully constructed strategic artifices. As Lasker once said of Dr Tarrasch "if chess were made of glass Tarrasch would be the greatest of us all." Marshall was the iconoclast who revelled in proving again and again that the palaces of crystal could be spectacularly shattered by a well timed blow.
Frank Marshall - many times US champion,grandmaster and conqueror of Lasker, Capablanca, Rubinstein and virtually all the greats of his day - was the heir to Morphy and Pillsbury and the forerunner of Fine, Reshevsky and Fischer. Under his leadership the USA also won the gold medals in the chess olympiad. Marshall's style was direct, almost brutal, but easy to understand and supremely effective -if you want to learn attacking techniques then the games of Frank Marshall are ideal models.
tricky games by a master of the swindle.......2002-12-02
the author was usa champion for many years and collected the scalps of the greats including lasker, capablanca ,nimzowitsch, rubinstein, schlechter and tarrasch. sometimes marshall was strategically outplayed but he was always ready with a tactical riposte which cd bowl his opponent over. a highly enjoyable book and the games are explained in a jovial fireside manner.

Customer Reviews:
The best book.......2007-06-13
This is the best book I read on derivatives till date. I am a novice in finance but have a good understanding of maths. Mr. Andrew has done a fabulous job in explaining derivatives complexities. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in finance.
Perfect starting book.......2006-11-06
If you are interested in starting on derivatives instrument this is one of the right books.
Well done........2005-10-12
This book is what you expect from the title. It is a clear concise guide to understanding the logic and execution behind derivative trades. These principles can be used for trading but even more so for corporate finance executives to handle everyday currency exchange problems or to hedge against potential volatility in the future market. I read this one for a class first but am eager to pick up the Capital Markets book too.
Does exactly what it says in the title.......2005-03-22
This book is for everyone in finance and banking or studying the subject who needs a well-written introduction or recap on derivative products. There are lots of examples and cases and the writing style is excellent, not that common in books about finance. Highly recommended.
Brilliant and clear introduction.......2005-01-01
This is a really good introduction to derivative products. I have tried a lot of other books in this field and ended up thinking that they were far too complicated and obscure. This book is written in a very clear and simple way, and finally I have a real understanding of what is going on in derivative products, a subject I need to understand for my job in banking.
