Author Jeff Wignall has already won a legion of fans with The Joy of Photography, and this new work will capitalize on that franchise. Customer Reviews:
First book for the novice photographer.......2007-08-05
This book was very helpful in learning the basics for me as a novice. I would suggest the following order for a novice:
1. "The Joy of digital photography" by Jeff Wignall
2. "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson
3. "The digital photography book" by Scott Kelby
Nice read but not very useful on a practical level.......2007-07-16
This book is an enjoyable read for sure. Mr. Wignall's humor and lighthearted style of writing lightens up a subject that can get rather technical. While you don't want to get a book that is a dry as a text book, I suspect that you do want to actually learn something when buying books in this topic area.
As far as what you will learn and how useful this book will be depends on what you want to gain in knowledge. I found this book to be a general overview of digital cameras; digital point and shoot as well as dSLRs, their functions, some basic photography concepts and photo editing.
A multitude of topics are touched on in this book and the author tries to cover a little of everything. Too little on too many different subjects to be of much practical use.
If you are using a P&S a lot of the book doesn't really apply to you and is therefore not very useful. Most of what is covered regarding digital P&S cameras is done for you automatically, or you can either figure out on your own after taking a few pictures or you can learn in the manual.
If you are new to using an dSLR, there is not enough info to actually learn anything. The photos are beautiful but no info such as aperture or shutter speed is included. And as I stated before, there are many nice intros on many useful subjects but they are just that, intros.
If you are just starting your journey into the world of photography with a dSLR I suggest starting with the following three books in addition to your camera manual:
Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively by Bryan Peterson
and the Magic Lantern book written for your particular camera.
Knowledgable author, excellent introduction.......2007-02-14
This is the book I bought for a friend who is just getting serious about digital SLR photography. Wignall covers all the basics and some intermediate stuff with obvious enthusiasm, and he knows his stuff. Maybe he tries a little too hard to be funny here and there, but not teeth-gnashingly so. Pleasing design, good choice of sample pictures, high print quality, not too geeky.
PURE JOY TO READ!.......2006-10-26
Jeff Wignall writes about photography with a passion that's both entertaining and insightful. Everyone from novices and seasoned pros will enjoy his writing. Not only is this book perfect for anyone making the transition from film to digital photography, but Jeff explains things so clearly that it's also the essential reference for those picking up a camera for the very first time.
Great book.......2006-02-09
This is a really good book!!~ I'm 15 and just got it for my birthday. It is easy to read and gives alot of info that I never knew about taking pictures. Now, all my pictures are coming out way better then they used to.The only thing I suggest is having you digital cameras' manual with you when reading most of the book; it's helpful to try out certain things on your camera while reading the " Joy of.." book. A great book...big, beatiful pictures, and lots of info!

Book Description
Here is the humorous answer to all of your wine snob's pretensions. This famous European cartoonist pokes fun at every side of wine and those who consider themselves experts. Even the simple wine lover is not spared some ridicule in these most delightful cartoons. His drawings go from the elegant to the grotesque, distorting the human anatomy if necessary to get a laugh and make a point.
Customer Reviews:
Jokes, Japes, and general Jollifiation in the New Cartoon.......2002-01-18
When is someone a real wine lover? It's a question that's been the bane of philosophers and their science since Plato. Descartes said, "I drink therefore I am," but his inquiry stopped there. To this day the philosophic community had concluded bleakly that it is a subject of such metaphysical complexity that the search will remain forever endless ... that is until now. Bert Witte, the author and illustrator of the new book of cartoons, You're a Real Wine Lover When... puts the issue to bed without its supper with Witte's astounding collection of aphorisms visa vi: "you're a real wine lover when.....you even store your automobile in French Oak"..
Award winning Dutch cartoonist, Bert Witte, brings together his scathing wit, his brilliantly ridiculous caricatures and a deep love of wine in his newest collections of cartoons, perfectly timed to cure your holiday blues. And admit it, you got `em bad. Be warned: Mr. Witte has permanently offended even the most smugly confident wine snobs. Be sure to check out the anatomically anomalous "Mr. Corkscrew" on page 16.
Bert Witte tackles the tough subjects in wine (and gives them a snuggy); the glass, the bottle and the label, sampling and tasting wine, wine production, how to handle wine before, during and after dinner and common and unusual wine situations for the accident prone wine lover. Each area is given its proper drubbing. This new collection is wine's "Far Side".

The second Bathroom Companion means a lot less fighting in our house with two books to read. Plus, this new one has more spare sheets of TP in the back!
Not Enough TP.......2004-01-27
Love this book. My wife loved this book. My kids fight over this book. Thank god there are two editions.
The big problem with this book is that there aren't enough spare TP sheets in the back. I guess it's a good thing we read it all over the house.
That OTHER Erin Barrett says "Buy this book!".......2004-01-19
After enjoying the first Bathroom Companion so much, I didn't expect to like the second one even more. I'm crazy about this series; it's better than any other out there.
W.C. Privy's, Erin Barrett's and Jack Mingo's Bathroom Companion--any edition--is a bathroom necessity.
ANOTHER Erin Barrett says "Eclectic and Accurate".......2004-01-19
I love these kinds of books. The only drawback is that many of them are also loaded with questionably accurate information. Sometimes with "fun facts" books the facts seem to be diluted in order to make them fun. I've noticed this with most other bathroom reader books. I wish they'd do a little more in depth research before printing their information.
What impresses me about this series is the amount of research and intelligent writing that fills its pages. Yet, the book retains its sense of fun.
It's an eclectic mix of general knowledge; the kind that might make you an annoyance at the next party you attend, but also the kind that will make you the winner of your next bar bet. The content ranges from science and history to pop culture subjects--brand names, music and celebrity. The Bathroom Companion is a bathroom necessity.
I'm not THE Erin Barrett, but I wish I were. Great Book series, you guys!
Even better than the first one!.......2004-01-13
For Christmas, I got this book and W. C. Privy's Bathroom Companion #1. The first book is great, but the authors really hit their stride with this one. Both books are full of great random facts, funny quotes, strange how-to features, and lots of stories behind the things you've always wondered about. They're also full of pictures, which is just one reason why this series is better than other similar ones.

Queer Theory: An Introduction
ASIN: 1566395100 |
Book Description
This book examines the stories of lesbian and bisexual women in a Northeast community who share who they are, how they have come to see themselves as lesbian or bisexual, and what those identities mean to them. Drawing on social constructionist approaches to identity, Kristin G. Esterberg argues that identities are multiple and contingent. Created within the context of specific communities and within specific relationships, lesbian and bisexual identities are ways of sorting through experiences of desires and attractions, relationships, and politics. Their meanings change over time as women grow older and have more varied experiences, as the communities and sociopolitical worlds in which they live change, and as their life circumstances alter.
In interviews conducted over a four-year time period, women describe the lesbian community they live in; how they see its structure, its social groups, its informal rules and norms for behavior; and their places inside -- or on the margins of -- the community. Lesbian and Bisexual Identities reveals how women fall in and out of love, how they "perform" lesbian or bisexual identity through clothing, hairstyle, body language, and talk, and many other aspects typically not considered. The women present a variety of accounts. Some consider themselves "lesbian from birth" and have constructed their lives accordingly, while others have experienced significant shifts in their identities, depending on the influences of feminism, progressive politics, the visibility of the lesbian community, and other factors.
Esterberg offers vivid accounts that defy the stereotypes so commonly offered. Lesbian and Bisexual Identities not only presents women's stories in their own words, it moves beyond storytelling to understand how these accounts resonate with social science theories of identity and community.

Book Description
How can music be taught musically? Topics covered include: the place of music in the curriculum; the mature of musical learning; planning, managing and assessing musical learning; school examinations and music; music outside of the curriculum. One of the main premises of the book is that music needs to be taught 'musically', with specific reference to both the nature of music itself and its metaphorical significance. It is important that music itself guides what goes on in the music classroom if we are to motivate our pupils and help them to fulfil their potential as musicians.

Book Description
The best minds in business—at your service
MBA in a Box brings together some of the best brains in business who show how the core curriculum of an MBA program works in the real world. People like Michael Porter, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Adrian J. Slywotzky, Warren Bennis, and Bill George give you a box full of ideas and tools that can boost your career and help you add value to your organization. For example:
• Why finance is not just about manipulating numbers but of immense importance in sustaining growth, building widespread wealth, and creating jobs.
• The profit zone and how to tell if a business is in one.
• The skill of turning an idea or invention into a product that solves a problem for a market.
• Merging the need of business to produce and grow with the environment so they are both sustained.
• The latest thinking in marketing about branding, pricing, reversing a product’s life cycle, and turning what has become a commodity into a specialty.
• And much more.
Customer Reviews:
Badly written book, good packaging.......2006-06-27
After reading 100+ pages, my knowledge of MBA programs and MBA practices has not increased at all. This is a random collection of essays with little practical use. This is not a "How-To" book or a "Cookbook" by any means. This book is very light on practical advice, and I doubt that it would help anyone learn about MBAs. Although it was written by people who have MBAs, their writing has almost nothing to do with getting an MBA yourself.
I was pretty disappointed with the quality of writing. There are better MBA books out there.
Inadequate.......2006-04-12
I acquired this book as a referesher subsequent to completing my MBA program. It is a suprising disappointment, and I do NOT believe it is an "MBA in a BOX" by any stretch of the imagination. I am somewhat reluctant and uncomfortable to speak negatively about any book I have read, and I have read plenty of books and review a fraction of them on Amazon.com. Nevertheless, I have a sense of obligation to tell people that this book will most-likely not provide them the information they are perhaps looking for in terms of MBA material. To try to be perhaps fair, I am going to highlight some important aspects in this book.
Innovation
--
The concept, from Clayton M. Christensen's THE INNOVATOR'S DILEMMA, "that companies fail not because managers are dumb but because the system doesn't allow them to succeed" is very important as it touches on empowerment, organizational learning, and team building (and learning).
Strategy
--
Yes, I agree that strategic thinking involves intuition and creativity. I am very happy that the balanced scorecard was covered in this book, which is an excellent tool for organizations to measure performance.
Management
--
Encourage entrepreneurial behavior and thinking. Ensure your team is actually empowered to make decisions, take action. Otherwise, how can you possibly encourage entrepreneurial behavior and thinking in an organization?
Human Resources
--
The importance of retaining and motivating the "knowledge worker" is covered, which is a concept from Peter Drucker. Organizations must appreciate, recognize, and understand a knowledge worker's extensive knowledge. Further, an organization must also provide opportunities for the knowledge worker to expand her/his knowledge, thereby adding value for the organization.
Marketing

I enjoyed reading about customer relationships management (CRP), allowing the customer to frame and shape the relationship between the organization and her/himself.
CONCLUSION

As I mentioned, this book did not meet my expectations and was somewhat disappointing. I think the title is not appropriate and perhaps even misleading. Nevertheless, if you want to obtain some highlights on certain subjects and prominent business personalities, this book can be useful.
Worst Book Ever.......2005-09-28
This quite possibly is one of the worst books I've ever read. Our company tried to read/study this together and we only made it 1/2 way through because of the poorly written and completely unapplicable content. I generally don't write bad reviews of products, but this is one I had to tell people about.
Essential Business Information & Diversity of Perspectives.......2004-06-02
In recent years, there have been several excellent books which cover much of the same material found in this volume. For example, Steven Silbiger's The Ten-Day MBA: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mastering The Skills Taught In America's Top Business Schools and Milo Sobel's 12 Hour MBA Program. (Both Silbiger and Sobel know it's impossible to gain the knowledge-equivalent of an MBA degree in 10-12 months, much less in 12 hours.) Each of the their books is worthy of consideration as is this book. In fact, at least to business students and to relatively inexperienced executives, I presume to suggest that all three be purchased and then kept near at hand for frequent consultation.
Throughout history, all of the the most effective people were/are life-long learners. They fully appreciate the importance of knowing what they need to know; also the importance of knowing what they think they know...but don't. As a result of all manner of new/better technologies, we now have access to more information than ever before...and both the quantity and quality of that information seem certain to increase faster than ever before. What we know as well as knowing what we don't know are critically important. I am reminded of Derek Bok's response to irate parents after a tuition increase at Harvard: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
In collaboration with Glenn Rifkin and Victoria Griffith, Kurtzman takes a different approach to various subjects than do Silbiger and Sobel. They provide a specific course of self-directed sequential study whereas Kurtzman provides a series of separate but related chapters, each of which focuses on fewer specific subjects but in greater depth and from several different perspectives. Although I recommend that Kurtzman's book be read sequentially the first time, its greater value may derive -- for many readers -- from its discrete coverage of those subjects of most immediate relevance. Obviously, completing an M.B.A. degree program requires a much greater investment of time, concentration, energy, and (yes) money than does reading one or even several books. Even an excellent volume such as Kurtzman's cannot replace that program, nor does he assert or even imply such a claim.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Silbiger's and Sobel's books as well as Business: the Ultimate Resource, Stuart Crainer's The Management Century as well as his The Ultimate Business Library: The Greatest Books That Made Management, Des Dearlove's The Ultimate Book of Business Thinking: Harnessing the Power of the World's Greatest Business Ideas, Daniel A. Wren and Ronald G. Greenwood's Management Innovators: The People and Ideas That Have Shaped Modern Business, Daniel A. Wren's The Evolution of Management Thought, (4th Edition), and The Leader's Companion: Insights on Leadership Through the Ages (Thomas Wren, (Editor). In fact, every organization should have an in-house lending and/or reference library and these are among the titles which should be included.
