4 out of 5 stars Great technique.......2003-10-17

I found this book perfect for the kind of colored pencil work I wanted to do. It is great for learning how to burnish and improving on individual colors and features of the face, however, a host of other techniques outside of burnishing are not much mentioned. I would not recommend this book for beginners learning to draw but rather artists already familiar with the basics who want to pick up another medium. Of the 12 or so colored pencil books I've read, this is definitely in my top two.

1 out of 5 stars ........2002-06-20

"People who thought they couldn't draw - but after learning from this book the work was pro quality. " This reviewer has managed to stuff portraiture into a neat little shake and bake package.

Of course their art would look "pro" if a teacher is behind you correcting each line out of place! However, creating portraits of people, by yourself is something which requires practice, hundreds and hundreds of hours. I don't think it is fair to say that this book will make beginners, "pro". That is wishful thinking and a total belittlement of art! I have to agree with the first review, the art does look mediocre. It would probably suit a beginner, but obviously disappoint someone a little more skilled.

1 out of 5 stars It would help if the author was a good artist........2002-03-07

I've created (and sold) countless portrait drawings and paintings through the years, and I love drawing portraits. I was expecting that with all this good feedback, this book would be something special. I was appalled.

I'm sorry, but the drawings just weren't very good. There was one portrait in particular (of a young African American boy) that was truly warped. The features mishapen, the rendering, shading and color were all off. Actually, all the artwork in this book is rather amateurish. Some of the artwork was a little better, but generally, it was decidedly mediocre. The colored pencil techniqe isn't good either. I confess that I lose respect for an art instruction book when the art examples in the book are rather bad.

And then there's the "grid" thing, which is the *only* drawing method taught in this book. Sure, it is a good learning aid, and is useful in many ways. But other drawing techniques (like freehand drawing) should be learned, so that the artist can have some measure of freedom and flexibility. The grid method is way too limiting to be used exclusively. It can almost be something like a "crutch", if an artist never moves past it. (Always having to draw those squares, squares, squares on everything! Yikes!)

That's why it's too bad that this book only covers the grid method. Most artists will discover that as their skills develop, they will eventually want to start drawing from life, (or eventually even draw things from their imagination). They'll never learn any of that from this book. Get Betty Edwards' drawing book, if you want to learn more about how to *really* draw. This book doesn't cover a fraction of it. And for colored pencil techniques, get Bet Borgeson's fabulous colored pencil books. She's absolutely marvelous.

I'm glad that this book helped other people, and I'm sure there must be something good in it (though I couldn't see where. I guess I was too blinded by the mediocre artwork). But there are FAR better drawing and colored pencil books out there.

If you liked her other books, you'll enjoy this Lee Hammond book dealing with colored pencil drawing. Try it, you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Does Exactly What it Says.......2001-12-12

Ok..the previous reviewer just doesn't get what this book is about. Even professional artists often use projectors, photos, slides, etc for serious drawings and paintings. The point is not that you are copying from a photograph. The real treasure of this book is that it teaches and encourages ANYONE that they can draw well and create works of art they can be proud of. Any book that helps someone realize a dream or goal like that is a book I like whether it's copying from a photo or not.

People, especially portraits, are often perceived as being very difficult to learn but Ms. Hammond shows how using a simple medium such as colored pencil and her lessons in seeing, placement, value, edges, etc can result in very beautiful portraits worthy of framing and hanging on any wall. The first chapter demonstrates several students first attempts at a portrait and then a few weeks later their second attempted portrait of the same person. The difference between these two attempts is stunning. These people went from childlike drawings to amazing professional results. Just ordinary people. People who thought they couldn't draw - but after learning from this book the work was pro quality. THAT is what really makes this book worth 5 stars. The fact that it uses photographs to teach portraiture is incidental.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!.......2006-07-14

Although this is a small book that can fit in your pocket, I believe it is the most helpful photography book I've read. Darwin Wiggett covers the necessary equipment, how a camera see's light differently from the human eye and how to capture the best pictures with filters. An example would be, "Digital cameras do not like the blue-yellow filters." He goes on to explain why and gives example after example with color photos of what and how to use specific filters. He also gives specific hiking and camera gear to enhance your experience. Then he suggests his favorite locations to get great pictures. This book is worth much more than the $14.95 I paid for it. Buy This Book!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding photography guide book.......2005-07-26

I purchased "How to Photograph the Canadian Rockies," prior to visiting them with my family. As this was more of a family vacation I didn't have the time to scout out the best locations and this book provided all the information I needed and then some. Not only does it give the best locations but what time of day, what season and even which way to face for the best possible photographs. The pictures in the book are beautiful images that show you the magic of the location but also serve as inspiration to all photographers. The book is nicely organized by location to quickly find the information you need. The author shares with you some of his "Secret Spots", locations that only local knowledge would give you. As an added bonus it also provides tips valuable to both beginner and advanced photographers alike. I would recommend this book not only for photographers but for anyone who wants to see the true beauty of the Canadian Rockies.

5 out of 5 stars A great travel guide too...........2005-06-08

I purchased this book while on a road trip in Western Canada last month. It's (a) a great guide on what to see in the Rockies, (b) a great guide on when to go there if you want the best phtoos and (c) a good photgraphy guide if you are an amatuer like myself.

An eaxample if of a comment of a view point on the 1A south to Banff. The author comments that he doesn't like the viewpoint himself but he sees a lot of other photographers there. There is a lot of wildlife there. Sure enough, when we drive up, there is a bull elk will a full set of antlers wandering about and grazing on the rest stop itself.

Recommended for anyone who wants to take the best photos of the Rockies. I also recommend his collection book - Dances with Light. It's a good souvener of your trip. It's probably worht getting too if you want to plan your trip.

Excellent book that helps understanding of the "dysfunctional" family and will help many deal with the issues involved. This is very helpful to me and I will give copies to several relatives. this is an area of psychology tht was never addressed when I was in High School and College. Oddly the issues seem to revolve around addictions but there are many, many more dysfunctional families where chemical dependance isn't a factor but this book is very useful for them. The sad thing is that our popular culture treats them as being humerous and there is really nothing funny about the situation for those children caught in a dysfunctional family

    1 out of 5 stars How stereotypical........2004-11-26

I don't understand how anybody could find this "good for them" or feeling like they are "self-discovering themselves".

It's horrible how the writers of this, think there are only 4 kinds of people in the world. This is destructive to individualism and finding who you really are. What if there really ONLY was 4 kinds of people in this world? How terrible would that be?! The world would stop turning.

So kids, don't buy this mind-numbing, spirit-crushing thing. Get a blank piece of paper instead, and write there how YOU feel.

3 out of 5 stars Who Admits They Are Dysfunctional?.......2004-06-24

A cutsey journal geared towards young girls but fun for anyone. It even contains a test to tell just how dysfunctional you really are.

This journal has pages of crazy graphics and fonts, places for pictures of people who make you gag, lines to record your lies and mischievousness and many quotes from famously naughty people. A great gift for teenage girls as most of the questions are geared toward their mentality. Adults might find it fun to remember the old glory days as well. Silly and playful and fun for the young at heart.

4 out of 5 stars Really cool and cute!.......2001-05-16

I ordered this book and when I got it I couldn't wait to start filling it out!! It's a book for us people who need direction in filling out a journal. And this isn't an ordinary journal but a light-hearted therapist who listens to your life's hardships and lets you laugh about them. I would recommend this book for the 17 and older crowd because younger people couldn't fill as much out (because it has questions about all sorts of things, ranging from your first boyfriend, first hang-over, ugliest outfit, most demeaning job and...etc)

Anyways, if this sounds appealing...at least check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Look Out Bridget Jones!.......1999-07-01

Bridget Jones and her diary will have nothing on you once you sit down with this delightfully decadent do-it-yourself journal! This book not only brought smiles to my face, but it gave me an opportunity to face some of those pesty demons from the past in a humorous, yet healing way. This is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who has ever wanted to try keeping a journal...and it's much more affordable than a trip to an analyst!

      Product Description

This is a true story, about one of the most electrifying books about one's life of deprivation and sibling rivalry, which has affected millions of Americans who come from homes of dysfunctional families. The author takes you through her childhood, teens, and adult life up until the present time. It is the real truth about a battered and abused sibling from her mother, and the other five siblings, putting a wedge between C.L. Louis, and her father and depriving her from having any relationship with him. There is nitpicking-screaming, insults, jealousy and control, physical and verbal abuse. How does one cope? How does one endure and overcome the tragic unhappy turmoil? There is suspense and a climactic point in which the youngest sibling commits an unspeakable crime toward their elderly father, which is overlooked by their mother and the other five siblings. Sibling rivalry is in full force and uncontrollable clashes between parents and the other siblings that anyone reading it will identify with the state of affairs that does exist in a chaotic unrully family. The mother allows her favorite offsprings to become controlling, self centered, greedy, and inflict verbal and physical assault against C.L. Louis and her father. The reader will: Cry, laugh, ponder, with each episode keeping the reader interested in the outcome. Each real antagonistic sibling and their mother exhibits a darker side, and their emotional tug of war into removing and discarding C.L. Louis from the family, as the mother encourages the pecking order with her favorite offsprings. Their is debth of the characters, the true antagonistic exposure of their harmful nature giving insight into their cruel, domineering, and jealous ways. This and much more affecting the writer's well being, causing a breakdown by the time she was eighteen. There are moving poems scattered between some of the chapters for one to reflect off the author's inner most thoughts that will touch upon the readers emotions.

There's always the light. It's definitely hard to see when you're going through stuff. I thought I was really alone, but now I've heard so many people talking about all the hard things in their lives, and then they discovered the light. So just keep fighting.
        - Samantha

It's difficult to estimate the number of kids who grow up in dysfunctional families, but we can say with certainty that the numbers are not small.

So what is life really like for these kids? What does it mean to grow up in a family where alcoholism plays a role in the family dynamic, where parental separation and all the emotional baggage that accompanies the dissolution of a marriage -- especially where kids are involved -- hangs like a cloud over daily life? What does it feel like when the adult members of a family are too preoccupied or self-absorbed to really act as parents?

In each of these situations, and others, it is usually the teen who has to assume an inordinate amount of responsibility. It means he or she has to grow up very quickly while struggling to maintain stability as forces are pushing in the other direction.

Here are the voices of ten teens who have experienced these situations first-hand. But these are not stories of despair. What you will hear are the authentic voices of youth talking about coping and surviving. One story describes how a teen girl found strength through friendships and by reexamining her sibling relationships. One who was abused by an alcoholic father tells how her commitment to art and the sympathy of a teacher gave value to her life.

These are stories that will resonate with young people. This is a chance for those who struggle in their own dysfunctional settings to realize that they are not alone, that there is hope.

An Afterword by a health professional serves as a helpful reference guide for youth who wish to seek professional help and guidance.

Easy and accessible reading on a great writer. One of the best things about this book is the lack of critical consensus on so many important Austen issues (especially concerning her ostensible feminism and her indisputable irony)--it's always amusing (and enlightening) to listen in on a civilised, academic brawl! Do make sure to get the 2nd edition with 14 essays including the new one, "The Mouse that Roared."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent juxtaposition of recent Austen film & originals.......1999-02-01

I'm a big fan of Jane Austen in all forms. I've always thought that a mediocre Austen film is better than none at all. This book takes a fascinating scholarly look at Austen's film treatment. The authors say everything all true Austen fans have muttered about the films ("where's THAT in the book?!") and explains why it was done in such a way (for example, modern filmgoers won't appreciate an ugly, boring Edward Ferrers). Contains amusing critique of Thompsons S&S--that Austen's originial may have been more "feminist" than Thompson! If you enjoy the original written Austen and/or the recent film versions, you'll love this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Unknown gem.......2003-05-21

This is an excellent collection of games annotated by one of the top 10 players in the world, Mickey Adams. The games are great, and feature lots of openings that you don't often see in the game collections from the top GMs, but that you see a lot in your own internet games: Benko Gambit, Pirc, Modern, Smith-Morra, Giocuo Piano, Trompowsky, Wade Defense, and a host of Sicilians and Ruy Lopezes. I have found this book to be most useful and entertaining. The annotations are crisp and to the point. They remind me a little of Fischer's annotations, though Adams uses more words than Fischer. Excellent production by Cadogan: crisp, white paper, lots of diagrams, two-column format. In my opinion, this book would be more in demand if it were better known.

                Book Description

In the divisive atmosphere following the Election of 2004, this ground-breaking new book reveals a new way to understand ourselves and others by mapping our "Identity Zones." Renowned identity expert Mark Williams divides identity into two broad categories--"affiliations" (like age, race, gender, religion, socioeconomic, and marital status) and "values" (like honesty, integrity, generosity, patriotism, individual freedom). Williams's "Identity Zones" measure how strongly we feel about given affiliations and values and provide a valuable roadmap for understanding each other and learning how to get along better at work and home.

                The Identity Zones measure:
                * Temperature -- From hot to warm to cold, how sensitive are you about this part of your identity?
                * Circle of Inclusion -- From closed to selective to open, how much does it influence your choice of friends and lovers, where you live, what you join?
                * Commitment -- From activist to engaged to passive, how willing are you to work to "change hearts and minds"?
                * Strategy -- From transformational to reformist to conformist, are you more likely to "get radical" and battle the issues, or work within the system?
                * Power -- From high to medium to low, how empowered do you feel?

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Interpersonal Dynamics!.......2005-01-25

Mark Williams has written another insightful book about interpersonal dynamics that improves our understanding of our relationships with others. His previous book, "The 10 Lenses", provided a constructive framework for thinking about diversity issues. His new book, "Your Identity Zones", digs even deeper into what attracts some people to others, and conversely, what causes certain personalities to clash.

This book is an in-depth, highly sophisticated analysis of human interactions. Other books of its kind typically attempt to distill personal characteristics into a small number of easily understood boxes, oversimplifying our differences and similarities. This analysis begins with the premise that we humans are much more multi-faceted, with a broad array of values or affiliations that define our lives. For example, a key determinant in whether people work well together is not just whether they share the same values or affiliations, but whether they share a similar depth of feeling about those values and affiliations.

"Your Identity Zones" lays out a typology to analyze an individual's values (like honesty, courtesy, generosity) and affiliations (such as race, gender, religion). It analyzes the degree of one's sensitivity or depth of feeling ("hot" to "cold") on key values and affiliations. It discusses how open we are to having friends who are different from us. It asks us to consider how "activist" we are willing to be in support of our values or affiliations, and whether we seek to transform or reform the status quo. Finally, it asks how empowered we do or do not feel. All of these factors affect relationships. By using Mark Williams' typology to analyze, in objective terms, the causes of differences among people, we are led to a deeper understanding of the sources of conflicts, whether they occur on-the-job, in a volunteer organizational setting, on the sports field, or among family and friends. As we better understand the sources of conflict, we are better equipped to take appropriate steps to reduce or intelligently manage the conflicts that regularly confront all of us.

For this reviewer, in the first week after I read this book, I found myself immediately using the typology to better understand several major conflicts that confronted me. This book has been a great benefit to me, and I highly recommend it. It helps us understand why we choose to associate with certain people but prefer to avoid others. It helps us understand why another person might get terribly angry at a particular situation when we think it's just "no big deal". Conversely, it helps us understand why other people don't appear to care very much about issues that move us deeply. A greater understanding of these dynamics helps us bridge differences between people. Great stuff, once again, Mr. Williams!
