4 out of 5 stars Jackson Pollock: Psychoanaytic Drawings.......2001-02-22

Any one who has the faintest idea of who Jackson Pollock was in the art world should not pass up the oppertunity to read this book. The authors explore the scaffolding of the artists ideas by opening his sketch books to viewers and revealing his bare-bone sketching style. I have yet to obtain a copy of the book, but have browsed through it's contents on numerous occaisons, each time seeing something different in every piece. An excellent book to conger up inspiration for all aspiring artist.

A digital camera is functionally identical to a traditional film camera in all respects except image storage, right? Not at all, and Mikkel Aaland shows exactly why in his excellent Shooting Digital. He shows why digital cameras--the point-and-shoot variety as well as fancier models meant for professional photographers--are overall neither better nor worse than cameras of older design, and goes on to show you how to take advantage of their special traits. He shows how to compensate for their shortcomings, too, notably shutter lag (for which he documents a useful testing procedure) and color fringing. Though there's some coverage of creating animated GIFs, this book generally sticks to shooting time and leaves editing to other volumes.

Aaland never forgets that digital cameras should be more cameras than digital, and his book serves as an excellent photography text for hobbyists and aspiring professionals. The author's advice in this area is both technical (how to light a still life and how to best a strobe to eliminate shadows) and artistic (why kids should be encouraged to photograph other kids, and how you can use perspective to create weird effects). He's an accomplished photographer who obviously loves his work, and his enthusiasm for making art with a camera--and, for that matter, just playing with one--come through brilliantly. --David Wall

Topics covered: Photography--of objects, people, places, action, nature, and other subjects--as accomplished with a modern digital camera. Emphasis falls on the relationship between camera and subject, as defined by focus, lighting, composition, and motion. Further attention goes to image manipulation accomplished via camera settings (like white balance and exposure, and, a little bit, to post-shoot processing with image software. There's also nice coverage of the differences among various image file formats.

2 out of 5 stars not very useful.......2007-01-12

I'm not sure what this book is supposed to accomplish. It doesn't teach fundamentals of photography -- it assumes you already know a lot; it uses some technical terminology that is never explained. But it also doesn't teach specific techniques (for the most part). It's just a bunch of vague recommendations, and it feels like the author just had to fill a number of pages with words to fulfill the terms of his contract so he could get paid.

3 out of 5 stars Review of 2nd Ed: Not much appears to have been updated since 2003.......2006-12-28

There are numerous tips and tricks revealed in 'Shooting Digital, SECOND Edition' published in the fall of 2006, with xvi + 287 pages. As I am a beginning photographer just learning to use my Sony DSC-H5, I wanted to get recent good books written for digicam novices such as myself. Unfortunately, there are not many good recent books specific to the needs of digital photo amateurs. So I settled for this book, which at least is recent and aimed at beginners.

The book has been reorganized some since the 1st edition was published in 2003, though there are numerous anachronisms testifying to the laziness of the editors, who did not bother to update as much of the book as they should have. It is true that many of the techniques do not necessarily require up-to-date information to have teaching value, but it would have been nice to see more discussion of the present and future capabilities and shortcomings of modern digicams.

That said, there is much valuable info concerning digital, as opposed to film, cameras. Many example photos illustrate well the points made in the text. However, many included pictures simply seem to have been selected from a variety of stock photos and selected on the basis of being "good enough" to illustrate the point. Also, there should have been more photos overall and more of the photos used should have been of the side-by-side self-explanatory type, so that novices can see what they've done wrong, and what a correctly shot image would look like nearby. Thus, only about half the photos in the book are instructional in some way. But that means about half are not instructional. Indeed, this latter half seem to serve little purpose other than to anchor text to the page in a manner that was pleasing to whoever designed the layout of the book. Also, many of these purposeless images are not impressive: not as examples, not as art, not as well-exposed or well-composed suggestions, and even, like the large photo chosen for the cover of this 2nd edition, not of subjects worthy of photographing at all.

Although the second chapter of this 2nd edition is called "Shooting RAW," about half the chapter concerns itself with choosing the proper camera settings and shows a bit about how images can be tweaked via software. But time and time again throughout the book, examples of image editing via software refers to Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, both of which topics the author has written books about. These frequent references strike me as embedded advertising, both for his books as well as for Adobe. Since I do not use Adobe software, his sidebars on image editing really only serve as examples of what _can_ be done to fix marred photos after the shoot, rather than providing useful instruction. But if you have Adobe software, then you may find these sidebars valuable.

Finally, I'd like to point out that the pages in this book are NOT sewn in signatures, and the thickness of the pages combined with the stiffness of the perfect binding, means that the book will not lay flat when opened. The idiot who designed the book decided to put the wide margins on the OUTSIDE of the pages (instead of the inside where the pages are joined), so that it becomes difficult to read the text as your eyes move to the inside margins, and you have to keep turning the book back and forth in your hands. Also, the stiff binding combined with the lack of signatures means that, if you use the book frequently, then eventually the binding may break and the book will fall apart.

I will say, however, that the 9-page, two-column index is quite good, allowing you to lookup in the book some subject you remember and to find that subject discussed where you remember reading it. This is important, because the book has no glossary. So if you forgot what some term means, you can find it in the index and turn to the place in the book where it is defined.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but wish there were better examples.......2005-11-01

      I enjoyed the book.
I felt like I learned things about taking digital photos from this book, but I was left wanting more side by side examples. It seemed like the author utilized photos from other people that he liked, instead of taking a more deliberate approach, such as discussing a technique, then showing you two pictures, one taken using auto settings and one using the technique. (That way you could have a concrete example of the difference the technique made). He does this occasionaly, but it would've been nice if he had done it with each technique.
I also felt like I was over bombarded with RAW format propaganda and advertisements for his books on Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.
I wish he would've talked discuss how the use of filters has been affected by the switch from film to digital photography.

      5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2005-09-22

I am totally satisfied of this book. It seems to be very useful for a digital amateur, enthusiast or pro. All I can say is that the book is very valuable.

      5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2005-07-27

This book does a great job of of explaing how a digital camera works. It uses real life examples to demonstrate the information presented to you. You do need a basic understanding of how a camera works, for example what aperture and shutter speed are, to really benifit from this book. It offers great tips that will help you take better digital pictures.

                          Book Description

Hopping vampires, seductive spirits and giant predatory tongues! Tsui Hark's A Chinese Ghost Story in 1987 gave many Western viewers their first taste of supernatural thrills, Oriental style. Yet the film was a comparatively late entry in a well-established genre. From Sammo Hung's Spooky Encounters to King Hu's valedictory Painted Skin, the 1980s Hong Kong ghost film cycle produced a stylish and distinctive body of work that compares with the best of Universal and Hammer.

This is the devil's guide to persuation, written by someone who was teaching negotiation for life.
The book is written in a text book format. It transforms the negotiation into a science.

4 out of 5 stars On Target Negotiating Advice For Managers.......2004-02-22

Cohen has created a uniquely constructed book, very much designed in layout to be an easy reference book for managers who are in need of tips and practices for negotiation. The layout allows managers to quickly locate key concepts within the book by boxing those particular points and using a coded indicator as to what type of advice is contained therein. The manager is directed to organize their thoughts and steps, prior to an impending large negotiation, such as a Labor Contract or Pricing On Major Components, etc. Mr. Cohen focuses on the techniques associated with "interest based bargaining." Using interest based bargaining techniques, both sides get some and in certain cases, ALL of what they need out of the bargain, and so does the other side.

Mr. Cohen gives some special tips on how to get ready for negotiations and then discusses "Stakeholders, Constituents and Interests." These factions are the ones that establish the power balances within the negotiation.

The book gives succinct and very understandable advise for managers who need to learn a bit about productive bargaining to assist them in doing their jobs. The book is recommended for all who negotiate, either experienced or novice, as the book serves to reinforce and remind even senior negotiators of tools and techniques and how they can be used.

                              5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book.......2003-04-23

Negotiating Skills for Managers is a practical book that doesn't talk down to the reader or bore her with dense language.
... The organization of the book makes it easy to go back and forth to examine how concepts it presents relate to each other.
... The book's examples from real life give someone with real-world negotiating experience Œhooks' for relating their own war stories to a clearly-described philosophy and set of techniques.
... Unlike other negotiation books, this one has an index that makes it easy to review concepts after one's initial reading.
... Until I read the book, I had never understood the concept of BATNA; now this fundamental part of negotiation is much clearer to me.
... Perhaps the most valuable element Negotiating Skills for Managers presents is the Interest Map a preparation tool that has already saved me considerable time in complex negotiations.

While the book contains a lot of deep philosophical ideas, it is useful for someone whose negotiating experience is limited or whose confidence needs boosting. I recommend it highly.

                              1 out of 5 stars I don't mean to sound extremist..........2003-02-24

I'm sure if you take a look at the other reviewers, you'll wonder why I am such the dissenter of opinion, however, my opinion is unwaivering on this read. I am currently an MBA student and therefore read more than my share (I think I'm getting crosseyed from all of the reading!)

Anyway, my point is that there are numerous texts on negotiation skills, creating and relaying value, cross-cultural issues in negotiations and any number of personal and environmental factors involved in any given negotiation.

However, I believe the author does a very poor job in this book in providing [cost of book] worth of substance. Points that are made early on in the book are drudgingly rehashed over and over again, as if the author is trying to fill pages like I admittedly used to do with 7th grade class reports. Except that I used to paraphrase the Encyclopedia...which had some interesting points. This author has a knack for the obvious and fails to point out any valuable case studies. Most of the "grey-window box" cases presented, sparse as they may be, relate parochial stories of how a husband and wife "negotiated" the picking up of clothing on the floor by understanding the underlying wife's concern...not to trip on the pile of clothes. Again, a fairly weak example to use in business dealings. I mean, c'mon, the name of the book is "Negotiating Skills for Managers" I can understand an occasional side-bar on ways to apply these (skills?) to other aspects of your life, but the ratio of little stories to actual examples of business dealings or cross-cultural negotiations is about 100:0. The author NEVER cites a substanial business negotiating example.

                              One grey-box cites this scenario;

"More recently, my wife and I had dinner (without reservations) at a Japanese restaurant in our town. We patiently waited for a table. Once seated, the food came very slowly; obviously the kitchen was overburdened. Our waitress did not wait for us to ask; she brought us an extra carafe of hot sake on the house." (Page 160)

It's a nice story about a restaurant aware of their poor service and attempt to make up for it with some free sake. Good for that restaurant...that IS smart service. BUT, where was the negotiating? negotiated in this scenario?

                              Another grey-box:

"One of the tricks negotiators sometimes try to use is the good cop/bad routine in which one of your counterparts purposefully plays the tough guy while his teammate utilizes charm on you..." It continues, "Be careful not to accuse the other team of bad manners. Instead, say something like, 'I feel as if I am being good cop/bad copped in this negotiation and it is not bringing me any closer to agreement"

What kind of negotiations are we referring to here? Used car sales? You MUST be joking. In all of my professional business dealings either domestic or abroad, I have never run into such juvenile tactics, except for one teenager selling used Ford cars. (if you stretch to call this a professional business dealing)

To be fair, there are some real points in this book, albeit mostly common sense. (for example, keeping emotions in check when negotiating and approaching it from a win/win situation, not a war or competition to see who can come out ahead.) However, these points could be covered in a five-page document, double-spaced, minus the little grey-boxes, and turned in to the 7th-grade teacher, who would probably give it a 'B.'

Please! If you REALLY still want to read this book, save your money and send me an email. I'll be happy to send you my copy for free!

5 out of 5 stars Eastern Philosophy, Self Actualization, & Negotiation Skills.......2002-05-10

Negotiating Skills for Managers is a down-to-earth book, written in an engaging and clear way, which brings the complex issues associated with negotiation down to a handful of commonsensical ideas. I highly recommend Negotiating Skills for Managers by Steven P. Cohen for people in all professions, and on all rungs of the corporate ladder, who seek to improve their interactions with others, thus enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency at work, and even at home!

From explaining the difference between positional and interest-based negotiations, to highlighting the benefits and detriments of human emotions in the negotiation process, to advising how to recognize and disarm "bullies" and other unreasonable colleagues, Negotiating Skills for Managers is a thorough book packed with information that is easy to comprehend and entertaining to read.

The book is chock full of antic dotes and experiences gleaned from the author's professional and personal life. This is the best part! Cohen shares situations as explained by his clients and students that helped me understand how and when to apply the clearly detailed tactics he outlines.

Courteous mannerisms, like: "don't hog the credit," "let others present their ideas first," and "best not to eat an onion sandwich before entering the negotiation room" lead into explanations of important negotiation tactics. Among the most significant insights offered in the book is that negotiating parties are not competitors but people who seek to reach an agreed upon solution to their shared problem that will be followed through to completion.

This theme of respecting others for their interests, opinions and professional and/or cultural difference runs throughout Negotiating Skills for Managers, helping readers stay focused on the importance of understanding others' needs and values before engraving their own into stone. "Listen to yourself and to others, searching all the time for seeds that can germinate into ideas that work," Cohen advises. Later in the book, he drives this point home in a more familiar way. "God gave us two ears and one mouth. Use them proportionately."

Within the first pages of Negotiating Skills for Managers I was challenged to seek self-awareness through thoughtful introspection before and during the negotiation process. I got the sense that Eastern philosophy has influenced Cohen's approach to business ethics and thus negotiation, as he urges readers to understand the emotions that drive their desires and think of their own interests in terms of the greater whole.

"Negotiation is not rocket science," Cohen concludes. Husbands and wives, parents and children, and CEOs and secretaries all negotiate with each other everyday, according to Cohen. The key is to remember tactics learned by reading this book in my daily life.

It's true that negotiating skills are learned over a lifetime, but this itty-bitty handbook aims to distill a lifetime's worth of deal-making lessons into 72 snazzily laid-out pages... and often even succeeds. Neatly divided into the three phases of a negotiation--preparation, conducting, and closing--it covers all aspects of the bargaining process, including identifying your own objectives and assessing the opposition's, choosing a strategy and creating the right atmosphere, making and/or responding to a proposal, strengthening your position while weakening the other party's (nicely, of course), and moving to a close, handling a breakdown in progress, and even using a mediator or going to arbitration if you have to. On every page, boxed tips, checklists, flow charts, and mini case studies walk you through the entire process. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking, and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

4 out of 5 stars Compact And Useful Negotiation Guide.......2006-02-07

This book is a very good introduction to negotiating. Though it is geared to business to business negotiations, it contains many useful tenants valuable in any type of negotiation, including home and car purchases, and to a limited extent job offers.

I found many of the important bullet points to be especially succinct and well written, and recommend this guide for them alone. The text is generally well illustrated, though a few of the diagrams are a bit superfluous and less than helpful.

This is an excellent compact guide and is handy as either an introduction or a refresher course on negotiating. I recommend it along with the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars For managers, but could be useful for anyone to read..........2001-05-08

Tim Hindle is the founder of Working Words, a consulting firm specializing in business communications. He knows what it takes to negotiate and then close a deal. Negotiating Skills shows you how to start from a strong position and then find common ground. It also provides practical techniques to use when bargaining. The power tips included are helpful. You will find tips like:

"Do not concede ground unless you receive something in return." -pg. 49 "Be flexible-it is a sign of strength, not of weakness." -pg. 11

If you have been in a car accident and can't solve the case with your insurance company, you might want to look at the Arbitration section. If you need a third party, a mediator could also be useful. A section on body language enables you to determine the attitude of the person you are negotiating with.

A nice handy guide which you could give out to all the managers in your company. It would also be a nice gift for anyone who makes proposals to obtain new business. You will feel pretty confident after reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Getting started in the negotiating world.......2000-09-21

Tim Hindle's book is an easy-to-use introduction to negotiating. This is the first book on negotiating that I've read. It is divided into three main chapters: Preparing, Conducting and Closing. It has a common sense approach and offers lots of tips including countering tactics for leading questions, intimidation, bluffing, threats or insults. It contains graphics and photographs in a clean design that help convey the ideas. I found the book was written for high level business negotiators, but most of the tips would be helpful in dealing with car dealers, gas stations, banks, stores, utility companies, or even a significant other. The book is a handy size for tucking away and reading a few pages at a time. It was an easy read.

This is one of the most useful and clearly written books on the leading edge of management that I have read. Offers practical advice to help your managers: Empower themselves to help shape the organization* Develop positive political skills in their dealings with all levels of employees* Take responsibility for their own actions* Negotiate with their allies and adversaries* Face failure courageously...and much more! Managers and other employees who feel powerless to control their own destinies, who feel stifled by bureaucracy, who feel sapped of creativity--will feel invigorated by Block's legendary insight.Block presents ways to treat all members of the organization as entrepreneurs so that employees feel that their units are their own businesses and that they, and they alone, are in the process of creating an organization of their own choosing. Managers and other employees who pick up The Empowered Manager won't just be reading about management. They'll be harvesting timeless tips from a master of business thinking. And they'll be uncovering a road map that leads to enhanced effectiveness and job satisfaction. This is a liberating book that cuts through our rationalizations and self-deceptions to help us think about both work and life from a new perspective.
