Customer Reviews:
Well worth reading!.......2007-06-19
I love photographing my dogs and my skills had developed to the point that friends, family and fellow dog club members were frequently asking me to photograph their dogs too. I needed a book that would help me with two things. First, I had to learn more about lighting and second I had to learn the best camera settings to get the texture and detail in a dog's coat regardless of coat color. This book gave me both and much more. It's a very easy and enjoyable read. Parts of the book are a little too basic for me but that's a small price to pay for the great tips it contains. I definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their canine potography skills.
The author explains very early in the book that the use of the term "Creative" in the title is intended mean creating a photograph that captures the personality of the dog. The book is written to help the photographer do just that.
Wonderful book.......2007-03-14
I found this book to be very informative and easy to follow. It has helped me so much with my photography. Hightly recommend to those just starting out.
Solid Posing and Lighting Ideas.......2006-04-15
This is a very good book to help any photographer properly pose and light dogs. Regardless of the shape, size or color, the author shares the tips and tricks for getting classic portraits that your clients will love.
This is not a bunch of cute pictures taken by pet owners, but rather a professional approach for professional photography studios.
Not-So-Creative Canine Photography.......2006-04-09
If you are interested in a very traditional approach from a professional photographer, this book will provide lots of information. It also provides valuable tips about controlling the dog. But for my taste, I found the photographic results to be uninspiring - too much posing, too much portraiture lighting, not enough of just plain capturing that wonderful dog as it is.
Provides plenty of practical tips.......2004-07-16
Creative Canine Photography is showcases expert photographic work from an award-winning animal photographer Larry Allan. Creative Canine Photography provides plenty of practical tips to successful canine photography, from capturing expressions and using correct lighting to avoiding red-eye and getting detailed exposures for all-white or all-black fur. Color photos throughout Creative Canine Photography illustrate all concepts.

Very good comic book!.......2007-01-05
Really enjoyed reading Underworld Unleashed. I'm kinda new to the whole comic book world but i'm loving it so far. Underworld Unleashed is one of the type of comic books that i enjoy reading best. Independent (from the main story line) storys that use the characters i'm used to seeing on the main story lines.
Underworld Unleashed has a fine plot and the drawings are very good. Excellent buy, im fully satisfied.
Best New Villian.......2000-02-06
Underworld Unleashed was a good crossover. A powerful being named Neron invites a number of villians to do business with him. Neron offers these folks -- ranging from Mongul to Punch and Judee, with everyone in between -- their "heart's desire" in exchange for their souls. Mongul learn the hard way that Neron can be refused or ignored, but not challenged.
Why would Neron want souls he probably owns anyway, assuming he is some sort of demon? What is his true agenda? The Trickster, from whose point of view the story is told in large part, doesn't figure that out until the very end. All he knows going in is what the Fiddler told him: that the word "Neron" was used in ancient times to create the numerologic symbol "666."
There is a lot to like, such as Trickster's P.O.V. Some is old hat. In many places the action was disjointed, perhaps due to the absence of crossed-over stories from other magazines. But overall this is a great read, both for the promised revamping of DC villians and the creation of a genuine long-term player in Neron.

Customer Reviews:
Shut up, Withnail! Of course he's the fcuking farmer!.......2007-01-01
I'd seen this movie about twenty times when i received the screenplay as a gift. I wasn't expecting to laugh much, or even read it, having memorized the script, but i was very much mistaken. Reading the screenplay was a completely different experience than watching the movie; robinson's writing is delicious. It's also amazing to see what the extrodinary cast took and turned into the film. Their preformances seem all the more impressive. I'd recomnend this to long-time fans, one-veiwers and non-veiwers alike. Truly a modern masterpiece.
I would love to review this item..........2006-02-25
...but I can't since Amazon doesn't seem to be able to fill my order for it. I love the movie, and I was really looking forward to reading the screenplay, but Amazon keeps telling me that there are "delays" -- and not sending the product to me.
It's a book, but it sure seems like vaporware.
What fu........ said that?.......1998-11-04
It was with great relish and exitement that I read my newly acquired copy of Withnail and I. I think that Bruce Robinson is a literary genius! The charactarisation of Withnail is perfect, the setting of the book is uncanny and uncle Monty reigns supreme. Quotable quotes: "As a youth I used to weep in butcher shops!"
Fantastic reading. If only we knew thehalf of what goes on........1998-09-28
Essential reading - if only everyone wrote with such condor - for anyone who enjoys Richard's work, and is wise enough to realise that Hollywood is a very sick place.
Richard, thank you for giving us insight into the industry in which you work, and how you survived.
I look forward to your next book.
one of the most hilarious screenplays ever written.......1997-11-10
Withnail and I is possibly one of if not the funniest book I have read in a very long time and does not receive the amont of credit it so obviously deserves.
Book Description
Withnail & I sank almost without a trace when it was first released in 1987. This virtually plot-free story of two out-of-work actors (played by Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann), whose booze-fueled weekend in the country takes various unexpected turns, failed to find an audience. But it did not take long for the film to attract a dedicated cult following, which flourished when Withnail & I received reverential coverage in the "lad mag" Loaded and was re-released in 1996.
Financed by HandMade Films, the late George Harrison's production company, Withnail & I was Bruce Robinson's first outing as writer-director. The script draws heavily on Robinson's own experiences in the 1960s. In this study, Kevin Jackson recounts his own experiences in addition to giving a full account of the film's production. But chiefly he analyzes the mood and magic of the film, seeking to show, without ever detracting from the film's comic brilliance, just how much more there is to Withnail & I, one of the greatest of all British films.
Customer Reviews:
A gem of a book about a gem of a movie.......2006-06-17
Withnail & I is by far my favorite movie from the 1980s, and this book is a very literate critique of Robinson's film. The BFI series includes scene-by-scene analyses of movies, and it's remarkable the things in the film that Jackson uncovers. But his affection for his subject informs his discussion throughout, and this love easily draws you into the Withnailian world as he sees it, giving the reader a new layer of pleasure with which to enjoy this classic of British cinema.
Good criticism, analysis, and entertainment!.......2006-01-09
This is a good little book about the film "Withnail and I." The structure of the book is built around a synopsis of the entire movie, describing exactly what the viewer sees. Interspersed amidst the story are paragraphs analyzing each scene, anecdotes from the making of the film, the evolution of the script, and parallels to screenwriter Bruce Robinson's own life. There are also small pictures, both in color and black and white, mostly stills from the movie.
Though at first glance it seems to be just a drunken lads' comedy, "Withnail and I" is a brilliant film that really does stand up to the minute examination of literary criticism. The book compares it with Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Dickens, and centuries of literary precedents. It's fascinating! It also examines the visual and technical aspects of the film, with lighting, camera lenses, sound quality, etc.
And it's also amusing. It's not so pompous or stuffy that it forgets the movie is a comedy.
I only wish that the book were longer and examined the film even more in-depth. I also wish the author had conducted interviews with the people involved, instead of just using excerpts from past interviews or memoirs printed elsewhere. This slim volume reads like a text for a college/university class that has one or two class periods assigned to "Withnail." I want something longer, something that would fill a month, a semester even! I WANT SOMETHING'S FLESH!
Book Description
Withnail & I, the cult film and highly quotable debut by writer and director, Bruce Robinson, has etched itself into the hearts and minds of its varied audience since its release in 1987. In this book, an unofficial compendium of the film, the author presents an array of facts, anecdotes, and trivia regarding the production of the film as well as the colourful genesis of its plot and characters. Written in an informative and highly entertaining A to Z format, the book includes photographs and maps of the film's locations, and yields answers to the many questions asked about the film. Ralph Brown, who played the character, Danny, provides a foreword. An absolute must for any Withnail & I fan and a lively and enjoyable read for all film enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
A new fan says: Buy It!!.......2006-11-11
I recently saw the Withnail & I film and absolutely loved it! My boyfriend was so pleased (it was his recommendation after all) that he bought me this book. Once I'd started, I couldn't put it down - I wanted to know more. Not only does it satisfy the reader's curiosity and intrigue into what really happenned, why, where and how but most importantly its written with the same dry wit as Bruce Robinson's. The level of detail demostrates the writer's in depth knowledge and appreciation of the Withnail story. An excellent read!

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. In Reclaiming the Fire, he advances his arguments in a serious but accessible manner with references to cultural touch points like Mark Monsky's Looking Out for #1 and help from philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He analyzes "performance-inhibiting" behaviors ranging from substance abuse to abrupt career changes that he says developed from societal attitudes of the last half century, and suggests a few individual and organizational responses (including his 60 Minutes cure, which relies upon passion and intrinsic motivation to battle career malaise). While not everyone will agree with his assessments and prescribed cures, businesspeople who fit Berglas's description--and human resource managers who deal them--will likely find the material intriguing and potentially helpful. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The definitive work on avoiding burnout, written by the psychologist who is the leading specialist on the issue. An illuminating and useful book for anyone coping with the pressures of work.
In
Reclaiming the Fire, Dr. Steven Berglas analyzes the rises and falls of corporate executives, middle managers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and others as they struggle to handle the trappings of successful careers. How does one deal with encore anxiety, the monotony of having to use talents that are no longer psychologically rewarding? Why is it that our national obsession with wealth traps people in careers that often lead them to wonder, "Is that all there is?" And why do highly successful people often set themselves up for disastrous falls?
Dr. Berglas answers all these questions and many more in this groundbreaking book by discussing real people whose careers have left them feeling pressured, burdened, and jaded.
In his most progressive and striking contribution to the literature on career success, Dr. Berglas debunks the persistent myth that women suffer more stress and burnout than men. He disproves the common claim that women involved both in careers and in family life suffer from trying to have it all, and he demonstrates how the drive to form close interpersonal ties a drive that is intrinsic to women can actually prevent both men and women from experiencing burnout. In a related analysis of the mentoring process, Dr. Berglas shows why it is more important for careerists to build legacies for future generations (a process he terms generativity) than to become obsessed with their own personal success. He proves that the process not only benefits the student but provides the mentor with psychological satisfaction and even improved physical health.
Reclaiming the Fire uses the working world not the psychiatric couch as a venue for understanding the psychological and emotional burdens of success. It is the first comprehensive account of how to balance self-esteem and ambition while maintaining challenge and stimulation throughout your career.
Reclaiming the Fire provides insight into:
*Why baby boomers are currently suffering an epidemic of career dissatisfaction
*Why women are uniquely suited to cope with the pressures that cause men to suffer burnout, and what men can learn from them
*How to escape golden handcuffs: the workaholic devotion to a job that is no longer emotionally satisfying
*How to cope with anger that threatens to sabotage your career
*How all professionals can identify the passions that will allow them to sustain and enjoy success throughout their lives
Customer Reviews:
very good .......2007-07-24
I have not yet read through the entire book but it explores many novel ideas. The author did a very good job in bring the text down to everyones level. There is some information that is just not necessary in the book but other than that it is very good.
More common than you think ... when the adrenaline of chasing success stops working.......2006-06-02
There are countless examples of people who have worked and slaved for years in a tunnel vision quest to be top dog ... only to get there and after a while just walk out of a life they once desired like nothing else. Sometimes they say a change of heart did it ... but the psychology of success and the constant demand and expectations of others over time tips the scales to a real fear of failure. Many people prefer to go out with a bang than to fade away a has-been. An intriguing look that begs the question if success really does make one happy.
When I thought I just had it.......2006-03-20
When I started reading the first few chapters, it was like the author was speaking directly to me, knowing what goes on inside my head. Actually, he even made me realize some things I never did myself. The only thing that hurt about this book is the author's writing style and his habit of using superfluous words. I mean when you have to run to a dictionary and back ten times in one chapter, it takes your mind off from the topic. The book is good if you want to understand the problem, but there aren't any real remedies inside this book. Until the very end, we were still discussing the problem and not the cure. Even in the last two chapters there are just more details about the problem yet no actual remedies.
This is a good book and if you're suffering from a burnout and you should get this book because it's a good first step!
An exceptional read - insightful, clear, and well-written.......2003-03-01
Dr. Berglas has written an exceptional book that I would recommend to those who are facing workplace issues such as burnout and "Isn't there more than this?" questioning. While I believe his research is relevant for all audiences - I would highly recommend it for people in large corporate settings - as well as those in supervisory roles. Personally, I picked up the book hoping to find some answers regarding the "dead ends" and the boredom I was starting to feel at my corporate job - and I found Dr. Berglas' book to be insightful and solutions-oriented for people like me... While the book is well-researched and deals with complex issues, it is clear and concise and should be easily understandable for all audiences to grasp... If this book is calling out to you for some reason, I highly recommend you read it.
Excellent contents - Not easy to apply.......2002-04-28
This book deals with the phenomenon of people who have or have had extraordinary succesful careers and nevertheless found themselves to be extremely unhappy - partially up to the point of self-destruction. This also defines the audience for this book: the people described above or those who take a keen interest in such people.
The book has been written by an adjunct faculty member at Harvard Medical school. The academic level is - as far as I can judge - impeccable. The author quotes on many occasions from actual patient-cases which are common enough that many a reader will recognize some of his or her own headaches. One notices that an effort has been made to write a book that is accessible to the general public. However, the book does maintain a certain academic tone that will be off-putting to some people. There are no exercises, questionaires, or the like that would involve the reader a bit more with the subject matter.
Whoever thinks that reading this book and applying a few quick-fix exercises here and mental readjustments there is going to enable them to continue like before, just happier, is extremely mistaken. Dr. Berglas points out that a lot of the misery discussed is a direct result of some deeply engrained characteristics of our culture. For most people, following up on Dr. Berglas' suggestions will imply a drastic (but doable) change in lifestyle.
Being somewhat of an academic myself with a keen interest in psychological issues, I found the book extremely valuable. The value to you depends on how you personally feel about the above. However, my advice: if in doubt, buy it!
