Customer Reviews:
Not very quick........2007-06-01
I'm a huge fan of PeachPit's Visual Quickstart Guides.
They allow me to quickly learn how to use an app.
When Flash MX 2004 came I was supprised.
It is 3-4x times the size of a normal quickstart.
It has almost 700 pages.
It has some good info, but it not a quickstart. I'd have preferred a 150 page option. In my busy life it is just to daunting.
In PeachPit's defense, I'm sure the product description said it was almost 700 pages, I assume it was quick like the others I've purchased.
Thanks.

Great starter but a little thin.......2006-03-18
This VQS book gives a great high-level of a broad spectrum of functionality of Flash but does not go into much detail. Good starter book.
A good place to start.......2006-02-18
Adobe and Macromedia both write excellent software but both have two things in common - the lack of being user friendly and intuitive.
This book is a boon to those who are willing to put the time in to learn Flash MX 2004. The explanations are clear and the examples allow a user to actually create Flash projects rather than just reading about them.
Flash, itself, is a monsterous program, and so the book cannot cover everything - Flash scripting for instance is only touched on lightly but if you are looking for a book that will give you a solid beginning, this is a good place to start.
Great Experience.......2005-09-29
This book arrived on a timely manner and in real good condition. It was exactly what they said it would be in their description. Wouldn't mind doing business with them again in the future!
Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Visual QuickStart Guide.......2005-09-17

Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable.......2006-08-01
I bought this book along with the basics version because I am new to using Flash and web design in general. I know when first learned programs with the help of books like this it sometimes feels as though they are talking about a completely different program because you can get so confused, however, with this book I am pretty sure they actually have written about a different version of the program. I definately have version MX 2004, which is definately what it says on the cover of this book, yet even when I copy their code exactly letter for letter, space for space, it will not produce the outcome they describe. For example the book repeatedly states to, "select the first frame of the root timeline, and open the actions panel," and from there it will instruct you to apply actions to a frame. Unfortunately in MX 2004 in no situation are you ever able to apply any action to a frame, actions are only usable for movie and button instances.
When the code in this book isn't completely not working, it kind of works if you trial and error long enough to figure out how it is really suppose to be entered, for example:
I am quoting this code directly from the book, on how to create a movable movie clip
instancename.onPress = function(){
this.startDrag();
}
MX 2004 will always let you know, however, that this is or contains a syntax error. After spending many hours playing the trail and error game, trying to figure out something that should be very simple with the help of an instruction book, I found the correct code was very similar to this
on (press) {
this.startDrag();
}
So more less I am saying this book is worthless unless you have an absorbant amount of time to waste trying to figure out why what they say in this book isnt working.
Indispensable.......2006-04-14
If you have some programming knowledge already, this book is a good way to learn how to apply your knowledge in the Flash environment. It has a good index and hundreds of pages of useful features explained so you may get on with whatever you are trying to create. I have found it so useful for user interface prototyping that I take it back and forth to/from the office whenever I am building prototypes.
Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh .......2005-09-07
I found this Visual QuickPro Guide very informative, extremely helpful and an excellent learning tool. If you want to learn ANYTHING, these Visual QuickPro Guides are the way to go!
A Good Starting Point For The Already Seasoned.......2005-06-11
This book has helped tremendously. Before I looked into this book, I was afraid of true actionscripting. This book has helped me to understand what others made confusing and hard. I don't think it is the final say so... as Flash is truly a vast application with many capabilities, but it's a terrific start for those who are familiar to designing in flash, but not superb at scripting. It will "Demistify" the actionscripting fear for sure. Now I can open other more in-depth programming books and actually make sense of code. I recommend this for any web professional that has actually worked with, not just dabbled in Flash.
Convoluted confusion.......2005-06-09
I'm very disappointed in this book. It gives several ways to do one thing and they don't work. It leaves out information and is unclear. I knew Flash 4 before I started, but was unable to follow this. I would not recommend this book.

jackass-kind-of-humor .......2004-10-31
If you have a weak stomach, it warns you in the beginning of the book that if you do, you shouldn't read this, but that doesn't matter! This can actually be pretty funny at times!
So Dang Hilarious!!.......2004-01-05
I just barely got into MAD magazine about 2 years ago. I was really behind with issues and the collectibles,but thanks to ebay and online book stores, I reached my goal to find the rare stuff.Now I own over 50 collectibles from busts to toys to t-shirts. And my issues are almost complete(still need the first 24 issues of MAD =P )The MAD Gross book is so funny. I love the articles related to bodily fluids and such. Plus the free poster is too much too handle for me =D. MAD rules!!!!
The Worst of the Worst.......2004-01-01
This book was so bad...I used it to level off a table in my garage that I keep my tools on. Part of the reason is a guy named Scott Maiko. Is there any redeeming quality to this book?
Stomach churning!.......2001-07-14
First off, I would NOT recommend this book for people with weak stomachs or a sophisicated sense of humor. This is Mad at its best(or worst)earning laughs with fart jokes, mucsus jokes, pee jokes (you get the idea). Any moral person will feel slightly guilty at laughing at such crudeness, but laugh you will. My only complaint about the collection is that there are not a lot of classic Mad features. But overall, if you want your humor totally gross, and very funny, this is the book!

The deafer you are, the funnier it gets.......2006-07-22
Some people don't believe in mondegreens because (1.) they have exceedingly good hearing, and (2.) they've failed to notice that other people hear a higher ratio of noise to signal than they do. Being the unobservant gits that they are, they assume that Gavin Edwards must have made up the misheard lines collected in this book. Edwards didn't. His mondegreens are real. It's why they're so funny.
Laughing so hard I was crying!.......2005-06-03
I, for one, found this book to be really funny. My husband and I were rolling on the floor with laughter reading this book. Whoever cannot find at least SOME humor in this book takes themselves and life WAY too seriously.....
worst use of paper ever.......2000-01-11
After hearing only a few of the terrible excuses for a "mondegreen", which is the technical term given by the author to describe the misheard lyrics, all of which were blatantly made up by the author because of the terrible examples given, I was astounded that this book made it to print. One horrid example is from Bob Marley and the Wailers, "Jammin'", We're jammin'-I hope you like jammin' too. His example is as follows, "Pajamas-I hope you like pajamas too". I find it hard to swallow that anyone could possibly make such a grievous error. I can't find anything funny about something so obvoiusly aimed at folks who have never heard the actual song. I hope Edwards has not made too much money on this book, as it weakens my belief in the intelligence of our country. I will end my review by saying money spent on this book would be better invested in toilet paper. I can't believe trees died for the publication of this book.
This Book is Heinous.......2000-01-11
This book, no offense to the author, must have been written for simple minded folk who have little interest in music or in intellectual reading material. "He's Got the Whole World in his Pants" is one example of the mindless lyrics Edwards obviously makes up himself, as no single person in the entire world would ever mistake the lyrics of that song for something different. What a waste of time. I mean, seriously, this book is supposed to be a collection of "misheard lyrics", but I think that Gavin is the only person who could ever possibly hear them the way he presents them. Let me give another heinous example of this guy's contrived lyrics: "Michael, row the boat ashore" has been cleverly replaced by "My goat knows the bowling score." Stop insulting my intelligence Mr. Edwards, this stuff is not amusing, it's downright horrendous.
Hilarious!.......1999-02-26
I have almost all of Edwards' books and I can read them over and over. To this day I still find humor in each entry. These books will always be an enjoyable read. Thank you Gavin Edwards!

For the home owner dealing with their insurace company.......2007-08-18
I am a Certified Microbial Consultant (mold inspector) and board member of the American Indoor Air Quality Council. I have this book in my library.
This is a good book for the consumer. It's an easy read with short, concise recommendations for the home owner unfortunate enough to have a mold problem. It also lists some of the key points on where to look for mold and how to prevent mold. Very useful section on how to deal with a insurance companies.

LACK OF INFORMATION.......2006-09-24
I"m looking for a book to find out how do I do to prevent/control mold.
I'm already aware of the risks mold brings to my family and would like to know how to deal whith it in every days bases. Instead, the autor recomends me to contract especialists and be careful whith several aspects of my insurence apollicies.
I want to prevente the need of specialists and I'm am hoping not to have to use my insurance!
Alarmist and Unscientific.......2006-04-07
I didn't like this book; it is alarmist, uninformative and unscientific. It really just serves create fear without providing any real information. For example, it implies that there needs to be a national standard of airborne mold levels -- an idea that make a good sound bite but, the more I read about the issues, doesn't make much sense, since mold is not a chemical but a living, changing thing. I would recommend Jeffrey May's Mold Survival Guide instead.
I did give this book 2 stars because it does raise concerns about the insurance and financial ramifications of mold problems, which may be worthwhile angle to consider.
Bad information in the book!.......2004-06-23
I am a Mold Inspector and work with Remediation firms on a daily basis to remediate molds in homes, offices, etc.
I have read this book and it should be revised to correct the FALSE information given about using common household bleach to clean-up mold. Bleach is ONLY good to clean-up mold on smooth, non-porous surfaces such as glass and plastic. It is obvious that the author did NOT due her homework on the best mold remediation products available. To find out what product should be used to remediate mold, buy another book about mold, such as Black Mold - Your Health and Your Home. This book reveals the problems with using bleach products and correctly informs the homeowner on an environmetally safe and readily available product to clean-up minor mold infestations in the home.
Excellant Book!.......2003-11-06
Easy to read and understand for the average person. Very helpful in dealing with this serious problem. A must buy!
