      Book Description

The sensual curve of the shoulder, the disturbing line of a scar, the magnetic pull of a lashed eye -- since the birth of photography, images of the human body have attracted, disturbed, fascinated, and obsessed us. The body has been scrutinized by medical and anatomical photographers; it has been celebrated by photographers of sport and dance; it has inspired a long tradition of photographing the nude; and it has been depicted in phantasmagoric terms. In this rich, involving archive of over 360 duotone and color images culled from worldwide collections, renowned photo curator William A. Ewing has compiled the most comprehensive and arresting visual survey ever published of the human form. From nineteenth-century erotica to the politicized images of the 1990s, The Body offers an exciting, elegantly packaged, provocative record of the camera's infatuation with the human figure.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting pictures and history.......2007-05-29

Worth having in the library. I read through it and it was OK.

      5 out of 5 stars Great imagery.......2004-10-03

You already know it's great. The promotional shot for the 1995 movie "Showgirls" is a blatant imitation of this book's cover photo (Tono Stano's 1992 "Sense"). If imitation is the sincerest flattery, that's a pretty high-profile compliment.

Despite its title, this is more a study of photography than of the body itself. Ewing reproduces images from the last 150 years, in many technologies, for many purposes. There are medical and microscopic pictures, pictures to titillate, and "freak show" shots. There are the pseudoscientific Victorian images of habitually nude Africans - often, racially based excuses for some drawing-room smut. There are modern abstractions, utterly literal but somtimes so baffling in composition that I can't figure out what I'm looking at.

The images are individually captivating, and even stronger in this well-made collection. About half the bulk of the book is explanatory text, however. I have to admit that I skipped most of that. The few fragments I did read added very little to my understanding or appreciation of the photos, so I let it go by me.

This is a beautiful celebration of the human figure. More than that, it's a catalog, by means of example, of the many purposes and styles that figure photography has had during its relatively brief history. "The Body" will be a real asset to any collection of figure photography.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional collection.......2002-03-07

William Ewing has assembled a truly remarkable collection of photographs in his book, _The Body_. In twelve sections, ranging from idols to eros, he offers expert narration to photographic works that are sometimes stunning, sometimes shocking. There are pieces within this book that are difficult to look at, because they depict something we have been socialized to try to ignore or overlook (such as those showing birth defects, much physical scarring, or disease,) but each plate has something to say if we look closely (even if it only says, simply, "Behold.")

There are deeply-moving photographs, such as one from Lee Miller, which depicts prisoners at Buchenwald standing next to a large pile of human bones in 1945, and there are also arousing photos, like the erotic pieces from the twenties. Honesty is a frequent theme; several photographers have totally candid, unashamed self-portraits here that could be seen by some as unflattering, but still, here they are - honest.

Truly a humbling book in many ways; the photographic genius represented here is simply amazing, and the absolute humanity of us all is completely laid bare, the trappings of civilization and manners stripped away.

Powerful, sometimes strange, and very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars real nice collection.......2001-02-07

ewing has put together a nice history of photographing the body. he divided the book into eleven sections, though most of the photographs could easily be placed in other sections. ewing has eclectic taste, there are works that you almost feel shouldn't be here, and photographers that are severely under represented. but still, all in all, a great book for any art lover.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the expense.......2000-03-19

This book is a wonderful exploration of the human body by using photographs. Also, Ewing's writing gives great background inforamtion regarding this history of nudes, photography, etc. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in art, especially photography and nudes.

            4 out of 5 stars A very good manga.......2006-09-19

This manga is one of my favs. this story never gets old, the animation is a little hard to tell whats happening but its not that bad. the manga is much less modest that the anime, alot of panty shots in this one. it has the same shoujo-ai as the anime but it also has some shonen-ai with was kind of a turn off, the kurumi sense of humor is in full bloom with this one. the series has no lag in it and damn near no wasted time. the time that they spend introducing the characters is well spent and not to long (unlike the lord of the rings). the anime is still my favorite, i recomend watching it first. FYI the storys are different.

3 out of 5 stars enjoy it because it's silly.......2005-09-23

Anyone who wants to make manga too serious is just plain crazy. This series does have a lot of fan service, panty shots, straight and gay/lesbian come on's and so on and so forth. It is also completely adorable with the steel angels and how they relate to each other and the human beings around them. If you've read a lot of manga and want something new, I'd recommend it. I wouldn't however, recommend it to a newbie manga fan, as the drawing can be a little difficult to make out for a newcomer, especially the action scenes. The basic plotline is that this is an alternative version of the past, in the early 1900's (I think). The boy who is the main character is a young mystic who stumbles upon the body of a defunct robot (Steel Angel Kurumi) and wakes her up with the infamous "Japanese accidental kiss." Even though her creator is there in the building with the boy she of course immediately declares that the young boy is her master and then they get into a fight with a bunch of soldiers who are after her and the scientist who created her. That's how it starts. There's a lot of plot twists, and interesting and surprising developments along the first two volumes of this series (the only ones I've read so far) such as people you thought were bad ending up good and people who were good ending up bad. Even with the conventional antics of the angels, obsessed with those they care about, I found this series different enough to be a interesting read.

3 out of 5 stars Not as engrossing as I expected..........2004-03-05

I read the Maico 2010 series before I read this, and that may have tainted my judgment somewhat. But to me, this series is nothing new, and not as interesting as Maico was to me. Kurumi feels rushed, like the author was trying to put it out before the deadline and didn't bother to really concentrate on it. So much more could have been done with it, especially once the sister angels arrived. The premise is much like Maico, Oh My Goddess, or AI Love You in that a young, inhuman girl (a robot) falls for the first man she sees and pledges to be with him and protect him forever. That plotline has been overdone. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing--I love Maico and Oh My Goddess, and I DID buy Steel Angel Kurumi. But I found that Kurumi has too many unaddressed issues and a rushed plot, so it failed to grab my attention for long.

5 out of 5 stars Go Go Kurumi!.......2004-01-13

I've been a major Kurumi fan from the beginning, and this is even better! Though I prefer the anime because it's a lot more amusing, the manga does it total justice. So if you loved to anime, you have to get the manga, it's great! THe art is good, and well...okay there is a scene about Nakahito that's totally wrong...but who cares it's manga! So buy it!

            3 out of 5 stars T&A.......2004-01-13

Title says it all. Pretty drawing style, lots of fan service (including some shounen-ai amasingly enough - in the US they would never mix straight and gay eye candy). No plot really, no point on getting it for any other reason. For those that like that sort of thing, enjoy.

            Book Description

Since the early days of silent film, some of the most memorable movies made have been those that have confronted and explored such challenging social issues as poverty or racism. Librarians and educators--as well as cultural historians, students and cinemaphiles-- will find this book a valuable resource for examining films and how they reflect and comment on the major issues of our time. This specialized filmography first identifies and discusses twenty important social issues that have recurred in films over the years. In addition to the films critiqued here, other related titles are listed under each topic. The 100 films discussed in this volume, presented alphabetically in standard reference format, cover a wide spectrum of film perspectives and genres. Many of the films are American made, others are European, all are English language. Each film entry identifies the prominent social theme or themes and presents full credit information, including the major actors involved. The Overview section, which briefly describes why the film was selected, is followed by a concise plot synopsis. Finally the critique gives pertinent background information, commentary, analysis and evaluation. This filmography should be valuable both as reference tool for library film study collections and for video collection development. Educators will find it useful for incorporating film into the language arts and social curriculum, particularly for teaching thematic units and integrated studies. The volume is well organized, the entries expertly written in clear yet lively language, and the critiques interesting and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Social Problems in Films--from Silents to the Present.......2005-02-06

Charles P. Mitchell has written a very perceptive volume, commenting on over 100 films (organized alphabetically)and the social issues contained within them as framed by an extensive Introduction (also organized alphabetially) beginning with
"abortion" and ending with "women's rights."
Each film discussed identifies the social problem under consideration with an overview, synopsis and critique of each film. It is Mitchell's critical overview, acute perception and sense of humor where applicable that makes each entry in this volume a valuable and wonderful piece of film criticism. Especially good is Mitchell's critique of various film noirs and neo-noirs scattered throughout the volume, since he was a specialist in this area of criticism---although he has published widely on other themes such as film music, detective films (Charlie Chan), the horror film, science fiction and even the
literary roots of films based on the novels of H.P. Lovecraft.
There is also a huge index and truthfully, this is one of Mitchell's best film books. I would recommend it to fans of cinema as well as all library collections.

            Dedication
It is unfortunate to note that FILMOGRAPHY OF SOCIAL ISSUES is Charles P. Mitchell's last critical volume. He passed away suddenly in Millinocket, Maine at age 55. Besides writing, Mr. Mitchell was a contributor to CLASSIC IMAGES and was a specialist on film noir (and neo-noir), often tracking down difficult-to-find VHS tapes in this arena, operating a mail-order business called DARKER IMAGES VIDEO in his hometown. He leaves his loving wife Roberta as caretaker of his estate who also intends to continue their video business in Millinocket.
Charlie's acute critical perceptions and sense of humor will always be missed personally and in his writings.

A great book, one that I will use in the everyday BattleTech game. This sourcebook covers the camo designs and all the different stars, binaries, trinaries, and all standard galaxies for ultra-realistic play. Great for creating models. Topped off with detailed 'Mech designs to provide even more diversity for the Wolf Clan player. A great book, I recommend it to everyone.

                              Book Description

The author presents a compelling look at how innovation transforms industries, raising the fortunes of some firms while destroying others. The book draws on the rich history of innovation by inventors and entrepreneurs--ranging from the birth of typewriters to the emergence of personal computers, gas lamps to fluorescent lighting, George Eastman's amateur photography to electronic imaging--to develop a practical model for how innovation enters an industry, how mainstream firms typically respond, and how--over time--new and old players wrestle for dominance. Utterback asserts that existing organizations must consistently abandon past success and embrace innovation--even when it undermines their traditional strengths. He sets forth a strategy to do so, and identifies the responsibilities of managers to lead and focus that effort. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843425, $32.50.

Excellent job done by Mr. Utterback.

I had this book for a class in master's degree. I was very impressed and found that it had a huge impact on me. I am not a reader, but found myself really engrossed in this book. One of the few "textbooks" that I still recommend to friends and family. It helped me understand investing too. I have an understanding now of when industries are mature and when they are still growing. Just wish I could see it before it happens. Then I would be a millionaire and thanking Mr Utterback, not writing this review :-).

2 out of 5 stars Read Clayton Christensen's Books Instead.......2005-07-22

This book covers much of the same ground that Clayton Christensen explored in his three revolutionary books: The Innovator's Dilemma, The Innovator's Solution, and Seeing What's Next. Truthfully, those books do a far superior job of explaining the dynamics of innovation in comparison to the performance of this book. Utterback does have very insightful comments on the standardization of product design, but outside of that section, the book is not particularly exemplary. For those interested in mastering the art of innovation, the game begins and ends with Clayton Christensen.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly analysis in an eminently readable enjoyable book.......2003-02-15

James Utterback has achieved the difficult goal of taking careful scholarship, drawing useful conclusions and presenting the whole package in a highly enjoyable book. He makes a major contribution by distinguishing between product innovation and process innovation and shows how and why the former is likely to come from outside the established industry players, while the latter is more likely to come from inside.

In the process he reaches back into history and covers industries ranging from pond ice to memory chips. Combining his explanation with concepts with Geoffrey Moore's "Crossing the Chasm" provides a powerful means of understanding where innovation comes from and what the barriers are to its success. Utterback's book goes beyond that. It also calls into serious question the idea (posited by Moore and others) that today's "high tech" cycle of innovation is fundamentally different from earlier innovative cycles in other industries. All in all, Utterback uses industrial history in a low-key, fact-based book that shines a clear, bright light on what drove yesterday's technology developments -- and today's.

5 out of 5 stars an understanding of innovation.......2002-03-10

This book is written in a concise manner that is straightforward and easy to understand. Utterback explains how innovation has evolved over the years, using great examples from a variety of assembled and non-assembled industries. One side note, I found that this book was worth the cover price for the history of industries he mentions alone. Some of the products and industries mentioned in this book include: Incandescent light bulbs, Typewriters, Glass, photography, and Ice. This book is loaded with invaluable nuggets of insight, it is impossible to due it justice in a book review. I highly recommend reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Technological Change: Peril or Opportunity?.......2000-08-30

Utterback explains "how companies can seize opportunities in the face of technological change." There are dozens (hundreds?) of other books on the same subject, notably those written by Geoffrey A. Moore. I rate this book so highly because it is exceptionally well-organized and well-written, because it examines several offbeat subjects (eg the development of the typewriter and the evolution of the typewriter industry, the development of the incandescent electric light), and because Utterback focuses so intensely -- and so effectively -- on real-world situations in which the "dynamics of innovation" are manifest. This book is very informative but also great fun to read. (Those who enjoy it as much as I did are urged to read both The History of Invention and The Lever of Riches.) Chapter 4 revisits the the dynamics of the innovation model (Figure 1-1) and then in Chapter 5, Utterback shifts his attention to developments within the plate glass manufacturing industry. In Chapter 6, he examines the innovation differences between assembled and nonassembled products. Subsequent chapters sustain the discussion of "the power of innovation in the creation of an industry" and then, in Chapter 9, Utterback "draws together some of the lessons of earlier chapters and academic research to consider the relationship between the behaviors and strategies of firms with respect to technological innovation and long-term survival." He concludes his book (in Chapter 10) by addressing "the perennial management issue of how corporations can renew their technology, products, and processes as a basis for continued competitive vitality." It is obvious to all of us that even the strongest product and business strategy will eventually be overturned by technological change. Ours is an age in which change is the only constant. Therefore, as Utterbach explains so carefully and so eloquently, the challenge is to accept the inevitability of change which results from technological innovation ("discontinuities") and to sustain a commitment to cope effectively with such change. Only such a commitment "will win the day."

5 out of 5 stars Untangles the Web of Confustion Surrounding Innovation.......2000-04-19

Utterback does a superb job of providing real world examples of how innovation can change the landscape of your business. The book provides a clear understanding of the life cycle of innovation and the behaviors within a firm as they migrate from a focus on product innovation to a focus on process innovation.

The book provides a guide that can be applied to any industry, any product in any time. It gives the reader the ability to identify what phase of innovation their company is in and helps them predict how other companies are behaving today and how they might behave in the future in the face of direct competitive challenges.

The book also clearly demonstrates that innovation that can wipe you out will seldom come from the "Usual Suspects". Not those you see at your direct competitors, but from those companies that see the weaknesses and deficiencies in your products and redefine how they could be overcome with new technology.

I found this book to be a perfect balance of academic principles and cold hard business reality. A very enjoyable read that has provided me with yet another valuable tool to use in developing strategies to defend existing markets and tapping into new.

It focuses on how management must think about new innovations in technology and processes. Ultimately to survive they must not shrink away from a technological threat, but face it head on.

Most companies defend their position by intensely focusing on how to make their existing product, better, cheaper and faster. Ultimately they realize that as shinny, beautiful and cheap as they have made their latest buggy whip, their customer has lost interest in the face of some new technology.

Cheaper, faster, better, smarter will only keep your doors open for so long and microscopically staring down on both your customers needs and your products attributes, may leave you standing outside looking in.

                              Great read!

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile and important study on how corporations die........1996-09-22

I found Mr. Utterback's book to be an excellent book on the reasons for the inability of existing corporations to make the needed rapid adoption of changes necessary to compete in a world of punctuated technological changes. I found his editors lacking in their permitting too many academic attitudes filter through to the final version. Too many refereneces to "Utterback, our and my". Tiresome and pedantic in places. All in all an excellent peice of work though. Glad to have read it and I will undoubtedly read it again. Congratulations Mr. Utterback on an important piece of work. Dan Taylor dtaylor@io.org
