The subjects of photography and computers have tremendous breadth and depth. Understanding either one can be a challenge, especially if you're a beginner. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Digital Photography does an excellent job of breaking the ice as it introduces readers to photography, computers, and digital cameras.

The book really does start at the beginning, with a short history of the camera and photography, plus the basics of composition. But it progresses quickly into an overview of today's digital tools. Instead of bogging down the reader in myriad details about camera models, computer software and hardware, and other minutiae, the book gives an overview of the available technologies, describing which system or format is best for different kinds of tasks. This is a good thing--hardware and software evolve rapidly, and some of the details mentioned in the book as "up and coming" are now standard. (See the sections on camera resolution for examples.)

After a look at how the gear works, the text dives into a lesson on photography basics (composition, lighting, shutter speeds, and lens focal lengths) and the details specific to digital photography (image resolution, monitor and printer calibration, and compression). The companion CD-ROM includes a demo version of Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and chapter 13, "Improving Your Images," goes into detail on using this image-editing application to improve the pictures you've already shot.

What good is instant digital photography if you can't instantly share your work on the Web? Chapter 22 addresses this specific issue, covering the basics of building a Web site (nothing fancy) and how to compress and upload your favorite pictures for everyone to see.

No particular platform is favored in this book--the contents of the CD-ROM are compatible with both Macs and PCs. Overall, this book succeeds at teaching the principles and basics of how digital photography works, and how to set up for it. Practical, useful, and enlightening, this is a good first step on a complex road. --Mike Caputo

3 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Digital Photography (3rd Edition).......2006-03-15

The book should be updated as most digital cameras - point and shoot and DSLRs have more than 2 or 3 megapixels. A lot of the info is pertinent no matter the megapixel size when it comes to correcting the photos with computer software.

2 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2005-10-28

Unfortunately this book is too far out of date to be of any significant value. The section describing the various types of cameras is no longer accurate and information regarding software, files sizes and formats is of little use.
If you are looking for a guide to using your digital camera this book will only give you basic definitions of the terminology and process involved in digital photography. The sections on composition and lighting are good.
There is a primer on Photoshop Elements. Again this section is out of date as it refers to Elements. 2.0. (At the time of this review Elements is currently in version 4.0) While this section does provide an adequate introduction to the various capabilities of Elements, most of what is found in this book can be found on Adobe's own descriptions of the product.
I have never returned a book to Amazon before but I will be returning this one. It is simply too far out of date and too introductory to be worth the cost.

2 out of 5 stars Steven Greenberg did good job, but the book binding is awful.......2002-09-07

I bought the book yesterday and already read half of it. The content is great, very helpful and easy to read BUT the book binding is awful. This disappointed me a lot. I am wondering if all 'Alpha' books have same 'quality' of (un)binding...

Except this problem, the information provided is really helpful and written in a friendly & clear manner.

I enjoy a lot the author's style and personally I would like to see another Steven Greenberg's book, more detailed on Part 3 of the book ('Let's Take Pictures').

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners!.......2002-04-04

I read this book two years ago after buying my first digital camera. I gave it away after reading it, so maybe it's not a keeper as a reference, but even so, I have to praise this book very highly for the insight into digital photography that it's given me. I've bought two other digitals since, and find that the lessons that I learned from this book are with me even to this day. If you're a beginner, and wish to understand this technology, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get started in digital photography.......2001-08-03

I have had a digital camera' a Kodak DC280 for many months now. I have ben a 35MM amature for over 30 years and this book has helped me make the transition to digital photography better than anything else I could have done. Before I got this book, I had many problems with doing this as the manuals on the software were very poorly written and had many things just skipped over or missing entirely. Before I got halfway through the Book there were many things that helped me greatly That were just not in the manuals that came with the software. It has made everything much easier and faster. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting in digital photography.

5 out of 5 stars Why Fumble When You Can Read It in Detail?.......2001-04-09

There are few things as satisfying and fun to the videographer as making professional movies - videos that you actually want to watch a second time or more - and Apple's iMovie software is THE tool to do just that. You get superb results from an inexpensive piece of software - IF you can use it. While the program is exceptionally simple, there is only an on screen "Help Menu," and we all know how those work: everything but the question you need answered, it seems. Into the void has rushed Brad Miser with wit and wisdom, and with all the answers and instruction you need and then some. His Idiot's Guide is a marvelous introduction to video/movie making, and he walks you through composition, editing, mixing, enhancing, titling, effects, and stuff you never thought possible when you bought that video camera (or even thought about buying it). Miser is one of those very few authors that are effectively "high tech" and "high touch," he writes with clarity, and with an obvious love of his subject. If Amazon would allow it, I'd give this six stars.

5 out of 5 stars One idiot's review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to iMovie2.......2000-11-30

iMovie2 does not come with an instruction book, and the iMac booklet helps precious little, so I was pleased to find Brad Miser's Idiot Guide (which is a series I like anyway). The book is both imformative and insightful, plus a lot of fun to read. It got me going with iMovie in very short order, and when I emailed Mr. Miser to clarify a point, I got a prompt and effective answer. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars I Love this Book!.......2003-06-09

I really like this book. It covers everything about Photoshop Elements 2.0, and it is really well written. I especially like the chapters on working with photos and the chapters on layers.

The disk that came with my book has all of the files too; I guess whatever problem there was before is taken care of.

It's a great book and I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Clsoe to being grreat but . . ........2003-01-28

The premise of this book is that you will learn by doing. The only problem is that you can't do that because the examples/ aren't on the CD. As an addtional problem, the software that is supposed to calibrate your monitor is also among the missing. Maybe the CD is for an earlier orlater edition but it makes the process very frustrating. Frustrating because the book is very well written and quite comrehensive. And you must have a book if you are to learn this very involved convuluted, if very useful, application.

1 out of 5 stars Missing files in book CD.......2003-01-12

Although the book has good intentions ... well written and to the point,I can hardly recommend it on account of the fact that a number of the files that are referred to in the book are missing on the CD. In particular,a crucial chapter 7 on layering refers to a file in the Chapter 7 folder part of the CD. The folder is not present on my CD and neither is the file. Without it this particular section of the book is valueless.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2002-12-19

I got Photoshop Elements 2.0 and purchased this book at the same time. It has really helped me learn the program. I would highly recommend it for anyone new to the program, or anyone who used the first version and wants to see whats' new. It really covers everything.

GAAK is what you get when you mix Steven Spielberg's "The Goonies" with equal parts of classic 50's style creature feature movies like "The Invaders from Mars". When aliens from outer space invade a small suburban town and hatch a fiendish plot to take over the earth and meet the original cast of "Star Trek", four misfit kids named Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs set out to save the world--And all before bedtime. After all, tonight's a school night. Story by Darryl Hughes, art by Monique MacNaughton

          5 out of 5 stars A REALLY FUN READ!!!.......2005-05-20

I loved GAAK. It reminded me of the days when I was a kid (and I hope I'm not giving my age away) when creature feature movies were fun. Back when you could count on mad scientists to whip up homemade monsters in their labs, aliens invaded the earth regularly, creatures still lived in black lagoons, you could set your watch by Godzilla rising up from the depths of the ocean to stomp on Tokyo, and Roger Corman ruled the B-Movie world. I miss that kind of joyous, tongue-in-cheek scifi/horror that you could only get in a drive-in theatre back in the day. I got that again with GAAK. Teen misfits Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs will put a smile on your face and tickle your funny bone as they overcome bullies, annoying big sisters, bratty little brothers, disbelieving adults, and all the pressures of being a kid in order to save their small suburban town of Eden'sVille and the world from invasion by kooky aliens from outer space. And you thought you had it rough when you were in the 6th grade. LOL! Two thumbs way up!!!

And now for something completely different, from the Brits who brought us "The Spam Song" and "Every Sperm Is Sacred" comes this zany collection of Monty Python song lyrics (with music for playing along at home), interspersed with numerous photos and the wonderful art of Terry Gilliam.

4 out of 5 stars For Silly Glee Club Members Only.......2001-05-16

This book is filled with lots of hillarious song lyrics, ranging from the witty to the weird and silly and is useful if you feel the need to sing along to some of your favourite Python songs while listening to a Python* CD, especially when you come across parts where it is difficult to understand what they are singing. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend buying this book. The artwork is interesting**, but is not worthwhile in itself, and just reading the lyrics is less rewarding than listening to the songs. And none of the songs are new. So if you just like LISTENING to Python CDs and don't feel the need to join in***, there is no point in buying the book. Furthermore, if you want it for playing the songs on the piano, as some of the other reviewers point out, it is often difficult to read, and it is also impossible to prop up properly without causing some damage to the spine (of course if you don't care, you could just cut out the pages, etc.).

*Not recommended for singing along to death metal bands...

Wow. I have the big box set of Monty Python's Flying circus, and had basically memorized all of the songs. I also have most of the movies. So finding this little jewel was a real treat! Now I can play them on my trusty piano, and have the background music. This will make for some weird family reunions :)

This is a book for every Monty Python fan out there! It is really excellent, and includes almost all the songs, excluding a few of the lesser ones like "Sgnt Duckie's Song" and "The Window Cleaner Song" but just about everything else is in there. Admittedly, it's a bit annoying about some of the music being illigeble, such as "Eric the Half A Bee" appearing in a sphere shape, and "Bing Tiddle Tiddle Bong" being flipped totally around. However, it's still a great book, and the foreword, afterword, and middleword by Elvis and God are very funny. There's nothing better than to sit down at the piano sometimes and just play magnificent songs like "I've got a Ferret sticking up my nose..." This is a super book!

This book contains many great Python songs, including "I'm a Lumberjack and I'm OK," "Galaxy Song" (from "Meaning of Life"), "Every Sperm is Sacred," "Dennis Moore," "Eric the Half a Bee," "Always Look on the Bright Side," "The Philosophers' Drinking Song," "Money," "Christmas in Heaven," "I've Got a Ferret Sticking Up My Nose," etc. etc.

It's musically and lyrically accurate, although as one other reviewer noted, the insanely creative Terry Gilliam layout and artwork sometimes make it hard to read the stuff--but that's part of the fun, isn't it?

There are a lot of wonderful surprises in here. Not only that, it's a great resource that will give you, your friends, and--if they're cool--your family--something to do that's much more entertaining than watching another boring episode of Novel Writing or eating Spam.

This book does exactly what the title says... it helps you move up in the music business. However, this can be difficult if you're not even in the industry to begin with. While this book has plenty of great advice, I'd say "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen is a better choice for anyone who doesnt have any experience yet.

                Book Description

This is an endgame manual with a difference. As soon as a topic has been introduced and a few basic ideas discussed, you are immediately invited to immerse yourself in the subject by solving a series of relevant positions. The solutions to these positions feature a wealth of practical advice and further discussion of endgame principles and the key theoretical points. This carefully worked-out training program will enable you quickly and painlessly to determine where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and thus set about correcting any faults.

All the main types of endgames are covered: pawn endings, minor-piece endings, rook endings and queen endings. Rosen discusses important elements in endgame strategy, such as pawn structure, passed pawns, space advantage, breakthrough, and zugzwang. Endgames are often highly tactical, and this is reflected throughout this book in exercises that require precise calculation, and in sections devoted to typical tactical themes.

The wealth of exercises throughout this book also make it an ideal endgame refresher course that will be of great benefit even to those who are already highly proficient in the endgame.

5 out of 5 stars An Active Approach to Endgame Training.......2006-02-02

This book, translated from the original German, is a collection of endgame exercises and their solutions. Assembled by a distinguished chess coach, they are intended to serve as the basis for classroom use or for self-study. I will mainly address its use in the latter capacity.

The main exercises are arranged into 15 chapters, according to the material distribution (e.g., king + rook vs. king + pawns). There is a 16th chapter with miscellaneous exercises, and a final chapter with advice for coaches. Within each of the main chapters there are typically 17 or so exercises. The first several will encompass the most fundamental endgame ideas (such as opposition, critical squares, the Lucena position, typical tactics, etc.), then the rest develop the material more deeply. The problems can be extremely tricky - the solution might involve a stunning tactical resource a dozen of moves deep. There are some amazing subtleties, even with very reduced material.

The solutions take the form of written exposition, accompanied by the main line and important variations. The explanations underscore important themes, describe critical features of the position, and anticipate reasonable questions. Excellent!

I think any experienced and serious chess amateur would benefit from working through this book. I believe very strongly in the effectiveness of its active-learning approach. A player is much more likely to gain and retain the knowledge by struggling through the positions him/herself, and having immediate feedback (i.e., the solutions that follow) to correct and reinforce the lesson. My suggestion would be to set up the exercise positions on a tournament board, and then write out all the key variations without moving any of the pieces - and only then checking the answer at the end of the chapter.

For those who might not be ready for this level of work, I suggest Pandolfini's Endgame Course, which is of a similar format, but at a more elementary level (be sure to download the corrections from the internet!). Another approach would be to study the lovely endgame book by James Howell, and then use this book as your "final exam."

The production quality is excellent, as we can always expect from Gambit Publications. I did not find any typos or errors in the analysis. The translation is smooth and idiomatic. The end of the book contains an index of players and composers as well as a bibliography.

                Receommended with great enthusiasm.

                5 out of 5 stars Solid, to-the-point endgame training........2005-11-25

Chess Endgame Training allows anyone that has preferred to avoid the subject of chess endings to approach it. Rosen's objectives; a manageable amount of training material and a didactic coverage that summarizes endgame proeasy-to-difficult positions; are achieved in Chess Endgame Training. A brief introduction to an endgame theme is followed by relevant examples, including many classical and recent positions with instructional as well as practical value. The format and contents are straight to the point, with no aesthetic dissertations to fog the mind. The positions presented are both relevant and clearly explained. This is a true time-saver that provides substantial examples in an engaging try-it-yourself format.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant organization of material--great training tool!.......2004-05-04

Chess endings are deceptively difficult: it can take more than a year simply to learn to play the major four- and five-piece endings competently.

The problem with many endgame treatises--including great contemporary books like _Fundamental Chess Endings_ and (to a lesser extent) _Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual_--is that a fair portion of the material covered is frankly too darn hard even for ambitious young players. Rosen has put a lot of thought into organizing the material so that the young player has a reasonable chance of solving (or at least understanding) each exercise. The ideal reader is probably ELO 1000-1600, though most players with ELO above 2000 would also benefit.

I can't recommend this book strongly enough to chess instructors: 16 well-organized lessons in one book!

Fans of Geoffrey Moore's Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado will certainly be attracted to The Chasm Companion, a step-by-step manual by longtime Moore associate Paul Wiefels that lays out specific ways to apply his popular tech-oriented business principles in our fast-changing world. But even those who never warmed to the earlier works--which proposed a pragmatic path for successfully navigating the ever-moving environment of "disruptive technologies that force changes in both strategy and behavior"--could find this book appealing. Designing The Chasm Companion as a hands-on field guide, Wiefels opens by explaining six "inflection points" in high-tech market development (the Early Market, the Chasm, the Bowling Alley, the Tornado, Main Street, Total Assimilation) that he and Moore insist everyone must carefully watch and properly react to as internal and external conditions evolve. He then outlines models and tools developed in the consulting practice he co-founded with Moore that enable individual corporations to carefully craft relevant strategies that they can align correctly with the appropriate market phases defined earlier. Finally, he presents initiatives (strategy validation, whole product management, marketing communications planning, and field engagement strategy) to help these firms actually implement their plans. Graphics and sidebars help Wiefels drive his points home clearly. --Howard Rothman

                Book Description

In The Chasm Companion, The Chasm Group's Paul Wiefels presents readers with a new analysis of the ideas introduced in bestselling author Geoffrey Moore's classic books, Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, and focuses on how to translate these ideas into actionable strategy and implementation programs. This step-by-step fieldbook is organized around three major concepts: how high-tech markets develop, creating market development strategy, and executing go-to-market programs based on the strategy.

5 out of 5 stars The Blueprint for High Tech Product Marketers.......2007-02-21

I've been familiar with Geoffrey Moore's work since hearing him speak at a Cisco Systems Partner Summit in 1998. This field book is a must for anyone who wants to understand what to do (and not to do) to successfully market a high-tech product at each stage of the Technology Adoption Life Cycle, and during the Product Life Cycle. Reading this book has helped me better understand how and why we succeeded (and failed when we failed) at my previous company in the tech bubble of the 1990s. The challenge for managers and executives when reading this book is having the courage and fortitude to apply these principles, even when they seem counter-intuitive.

2 out of 5 stars It is good book but..........2007-01-11

After reading the Moore's "Crossing the Chasm", this book really bored me. Maybe the language used in the book is the problem. I am not sure. However, I highly reccommend you to buy Moore's "Crossing the Chasm". It is an excellent book.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive and could be turned into a leaflet.......2004-11-08

I have read "Crossing the Chasm" and "Inside the tornado" by Moore, both very good books! When I first laid my eyes on this book I had a slight feeling that there might be risk of overlap. I think Wiefelds saw this as well and got a good endorsement by his colleague Moore - to state that this is a complement, not a repetition. That the book was published after the dot-com, in 2002, felt reassuring though - a lot of good lessons were probably to be learned for the reader. Ok, so I had high expectations, but felt a slight doubt.

After reading the book I have two statements:
                1. The book delivers some more hands on the two books it referrers to, some really good lists. All in all about nine pages of good ROI-of time material.
                2. I am very sad that Wiefelds did not listen to his own good recommendation: don't talk about your product as you know it - know your target group! Wiefelds should know that I am not planning on reading this book for fun - I want a high gain/time-quota, not 352 pages that take a week to read, when a 20 page leaflet would be sufficient! Because the book is repetitive - very!

                To summarize:
The book offers some good hands on tips and lists, but should have been a 20 page leaflet.

5 out of 5 stars Extends beyond high tech.......2004-01-24

Wiefels get to the heart of high tech marketing. Nothing I have read has more insights or is more useful in the practical application of marketing constructs for high tech. Anybody in high tech, indeed in marketing of any sort, can benefit from these concepts.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide for tech marketeers and managers.......2003-04-08

It's a very simple and clear framework to keep in mind, with VERY practical results in day-to-day activities of product management (specially for those, like me, come from "techies" backgrounds). It's reccommended to read the other 5 books of Chasm Group to fully understand the concepts, but to start using as product manager, this is THE guide.
