Book Description
Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was passionate about the sea. Before becoming a painter, he spent six months at sea, and, like many Europeans of his era, he took numerous seaside holidays. Manet made his public debut as a marine painter at the Paris Salon of 1864 with The Battle of the U.S.S. "Kearsarge" and the C.S.S. "Alabama," his dramatic depiction of a U.S. Civil War naval battle off the coast of France, and he continued to paint seascapes throughout his career. These extraordinary works clearly reflect his intimate knowledge of and love for maritime vessels and the sea. Manet and the Sea is the first book to highlight the French master's beautiful and varied seascapes. Essays by leading scholars discuss how Manet completely overturned the established academic conventions of marine painting in France. His provocative approach was equal to that of his contemporary Gustave Courbet, and his bold and innovative techniques inspired many younger artists, including Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, James McNeill Whistler, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Essays on these and other artists place their seascapes in relation to Manet's pictures. This handsomely illustrated and designed book presents over one hundred paintings and drawings in full color. Anyone interested in the sea, maritime painting, nineteenth-century French painting, and particularly the role Manet played in the Impressionist revolution, will find this an essential book to own.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A858104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Integrated MANET Mutual Authentication System (IMMAS) provides implied mutual authentication of all routing and data traffic within a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) by combining Elliptic Curve Cryptography, a public-key cryptosystem, with the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) Protocol. IMMAS provides security by effectively hiding network topology from adversaries while reducing the potential for, among other things, traffic analysis and data tampering, all while providing a graceful degradation for each of the authentication components. Current research in MANETs tends to focus primarily on routing issues leaving topics such as security and authentication for future research. IMMAS focuses on achieving a higher level of security with the potential for substantial increases in efficiency of processing power and bandwidth compared to alternative exterior authentication mechanisms tacked on after protocol development and standardization.

You know those old postcards that show the local meatpacking factory in all its cinder-block glory or the sickening color scheme of a cheap '70s motel room? Well, here they are. Beginning with panoramas of highways in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and other U.S. states, Boring Postcards segues to truck stops, restaurants, motor inns, malls, airports, military bases, factories, tools, and automobiles. Every image is certifiably boring, whether by dint of a photographer's ineptitude (dead-on views taken from too far away) or the sorry state of corporate architecture and interior design. And yet, as earnest advertisements for the American Way of Life, they all radiate a sunny faith in the uniqueness and desirability of whatever they portray.
There's not a word of commentary in this book, but that part is up to you. Certain things begin to stand out as you flip through the pages. Like the always blue skies. (Positive thinking!) Or the potentially interesting details that are uniformly obliterated, thanks to those polite middle-distance views and the muddy qualities of cheap lithography. There's a weird tension between the blandly generic ("Fine Food" reads the only visible sign atop a low-slung white building) and the proudly local (according to the postcard caption, this is "The famous Blue Grill on U.S. 40, St. Elmo, Ill."). In its silently subversive way, Boring Postcards proposes that we look more closely at this hallowed form of marketing to see what it tells us about the values and standards of mainstream American culture. --Cathy Curtis

Boring? Not!.......2007-09-02
This is an awesome book, made up entirely of old postcards with pictures of highways, restaurants, airports, and other prosaic places.
The postcards aren't like the ones you see today, photographs of beautiful places. They look like someone snapped a picture of the highway or restaurant, without even bothering to pick a scenic spot. Only, many of them have captions describing the pictures as 'beautiful' or 'scenic.' That only makes it funnier.
On the one hand, I applaud the use of average, even somewhat ugly images in this book to convey a feeling of time and place. At the same time, I can't believe anyone thought these pictures would make good postcards -- even decades ago.
The pictures are quirky and make me laugh. Best of all, they feel like a window into another time. I can look at these photographs and feel like I'm there... in that prosaic, rather ugly place, probably filled with real people with all their quirks and oddities. It's like a time machine!
All in all, I'm very glad I acquired this book.
Great Gift Idea .......2007-08-09
I have sent this as a gift several times. All recipients loved the book but all were sorry that postcards were not removable.
not boring, really real.......2007-03-25
i agree with other reviewers in that the post cards speak for themselves. Perfect!!! as a footnote, i'd like to add, i have actually been to at least 8 -10 of these places, not because i was trying to find it, but coincidentally went through these places as well, many still exist. scary.
You might have been there!.......2006-01-29
This makes an interesting gift for a friend or relative.
If you are older than 45, or so, you have probably visited at least one of the places shown in these pictures!
humerous.......2005-10-08
These postcards are really boring, but they make for a funny collection of airport and shop postcards.

Book Description
Year two on Steve Canyon sees comics master Milton Caniff truly hit his stride. Gorgeously rendered exotic locales, breathlessly paced adventure, and beautiful women as only Caniff could draw await in four story arcs: "Medical Sabotage," "The Nine Maid," "Convoy," "Plantation Sabotage," and "Puppy Love."
Customer Reviews:
Excellence 2.0.......2007-01-15
There are five, not four, adventures in this issue. The first of these begins in the 1947 edition and is about one month old when this issue begins.
I've been reading several series in parallel lately: Canyon, Cerebus, Sandman, Krazy Kat. Apart from Sandman, they're great entertainment but, somewhat surprisingly, I'm drawn to Steve Canyon more than the others. As I indicate in my review for the 1947 volume, the way the times are rendered is very special. The stories are involved and well-paced, the art is absolutely beautiful, the characters are very identifiable in Caniff's precise renderings.
The printing and binding are excellent but the page size is too small to do justice to the art. A couple of panels, one strip and one Sunday page are duplicated - errors in edition, but at least nothing is missing. Nevertheless, the end product rates highly. I mention in my previous review that while reading, I have a magnifying glass handy to look at details.
Caniff's work, already at an extremely high standard in Canyon's inaugural year, improves here with more cinematographic techniques, more varied perspectives and highly complex panels with a great many figures. Though these would wind up in a little strip in newspapers, one wonders how he could meet his deadlines with such painstaking work. In his static art, Caniff is second to none, but in his dynamic art (though outstanding), we can see some techniques better applied elsewhere. For example, to convey speed, he shows running figures leaning forward at a 45 degree angle, which just does not work. Other artists, Hergé for example, show them up in the air, back arched, legs stretched over exaggeratedly long strides, which is really effective in conveying speed. I'll reserve other examples for reviews of later issues. Still, Caniff's work is a joy to behold and I eagerly await each new issue of Steve Canyon.

Book Description
This ambitious book from author, producer and director Michael Tobias draws together the voices of 40 renowned documentary filmmakers from around the world.
These contributors shed unique light on contemporary culture and aesthetics, the filmmaker's commitment to the documentary form, and the documentary production process from concept to marketplace. They also probe provocative questions: What is reality in a documentary? Can and should there be objectivity in a documentary? What is the role of social advocacy in a documentary? How do new production technologies affect a documentary's message?
This is the first book that brings together an international roster of documentary filmmakers to speak about the very heart and soul of their art. It should prove to be an invaluable guide for both professionals and students, and will appeal to general filmgoers as well.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Idea Wasted.......1999-06-15
This book is a collection of essays of varying quality by documentary filmmakers. There are some worthwhile nuggets, but much of the content is obviously filler. Michael Tobias is credited as the book's editor, but there's little evidence of any editing. The pages are filled with errors in grammar and typography, and many of the essays ramble aimlessly. This is unfortunate, because this sort of book is much appreciated. Gabriella Oldham's 'First Cut: Conversations with Film Editors' will be of more interest to filmmakers. Hopefully, a second edition of 'The Search For Reality' will be treated with more care than the first. Very disappointing.
Disappointing.......1999-05-18
I expected this book to contain suggestions from established filmmakers on how to film with minimal impact on the subject. However, this book was nothing but a collection of anecdotes on why the filmmakers went into documentary filmmaking. If you're a film student, it could be inspirational. If you're a filmmaker or videographer, keep looking.

ASIN: 1585747599 |
Book Description
ADVANCED CHESS PROBLEMS covers 200 commonly encountered chess problems. Clear and concise instructions help the chess player to ensure that he/she does not get cornered early on in the game. No expert knowledge of the game is necessary. These problems obey explicitly the rules of chess and, if you know the moves of the pieces, solving them will be well within your capabilities. That is not to say they are all easy to solve--they vary. The pleasure of problem chess lies not in the difficulty of solution, but in an appreciation of how White wins. There are no dull draws here, only exciting mate finishes. The clarity and pertinence of this book make it a must-have for anyone who is interested in becoming an avid chess player, and a challenging companion for the more advanced player.
Customer Reviews:
problems are the art of chess.......2004-03-02
Barry Barnes is among the few "insiders" in the world of chess problems, having spent his "second career" promoting chess problems and international organizations devoted to them. Since his first career was advertising, he knows how to write to his audience. The back cover description of this book doesn't do it justice. This is about art, not practical, over-the-board play. Barnes is not only a top-ranked composer of chess problems, but the interpreter of perhaps the greatest composer of the twentieth century, Comins Mansfield. Dip in here at your peril: you will be captivated, then enslaved, by the magic of chess art.

Book Description
Hoshin is a system which was developed in Japan in the 1960's, and is a derivative of Management By Objectives (MBO). It is a Management System for determining the appropriate course of action for an organization, and effectively accomplishing the relevant actions and results. Having recognized the power of this system, Beyond Strategic Vision tailors the Hoshin system to fit the culture of North American and European organizations. It is a "how-to" guide to the Hoshin method for executives, managers, and any other professionals who must plan as part of their normal job.
The management of an organization, whether it be large or small, has as one of its principal responsibilities setting the direction of the organization for the future. The most effective way to set the future direction is to develop a shared vision of what the organization will be in the future, contrast it to the way the organization is now, and then to create a plan for bridging the gap: the Strategic Plan. Beyond Strategic Vision shows you how to do this effectively and efficiently.
Michael Cowley has been a teacher and practitioner of management and strategic planning methodologies since 1972. He is a certified instructor for GOAL/QPC and has worked with a wide variety of clients in the automotive, manufacturing, financial, military, healthcare, and educational fields. Dr. Cowley is President of Cowley & Associates, management consultants in Carnelian Bay, California.
Ellen Domb is President of the PQR Group, a consulting firm specializing in the application of TQM in Upland, California. She has a successful history of teaching and consulting for planning, management, manufacturing, product development, and business systems. Dr. Domb is the author of numerous articles and books on quality management practices.
Comprehensive and complete, from vision to tactical details.
Balanced between day-to-day and long-term strategies.
Designed for anyone to use, even families.
Customer Reviews:
Aligning lean principles with strategic intent.......2007-01-04
Time after time I have witnessed the application of lean or six sigma methodologies without a clear perception of how the specific initiatives align with the business strategy - often because the business strategy had never be developed to a stage where obvious connections could be made. Hoshin Kanri fills that gap by providing a means of devolving the high-level business strategies to the point where the individual tasks and projects to support them are identifiable - thereby creating the much need link between local initiatives and strategic imperatives.
The book "Beyond strategic vision" provides as good an explanation of the Hoshin Kanri method as any I have read. It explains in clear terms the process that is followed and supports the explanations with examples from the authors' experiences. The book provides of a number of example templates, and explains in detail many of the tools (an entire chapter focuses on the tools) that support the process. The great insight for me was that the tools used would probably be familiar to anybody that has experience with PDCA, Lean, TQM, Six sigma, etc., it is just that they are used in a strategic, rather than in their more typical tactical or operational, context.
Beyond Strategic Vision by Michael Cowley and Ellen Domb.......2005-05-19
The authors of Beyond Strategic Vision explain that planning at several levels is a common denominator for success in any effort to change an organisation. It concepts like total quality management and process re-engineering to be used successfully. The authors explain that strategic and operational planning are powerful agents and mechanisms for setting and meeting an organisation's ambitious and exciting goals. They explain that Hoshin planning is dramatically superior to any of the other systems. The Hoshin system was developed in Japan in the 1960s and is a derivative of management by objectives.
The authors presented a clear, logical and easy to follow description of the Hoshin planning process that can assist any organisation to plan, create and implement strategies successfully.
The book focuses on how to translate an organisation's vision into action. The book explains that the Hoshin planning process is a powerful tool for putting plans into action. It provides a framework for process driven thinking that results in organisational success. The authors used their experiences in some of the best organisations in the world to explain how Hoshin planning is applied.
I have worked in a number of organisations where the top management put a lot of time and effort into formulating strategic plans. The strategic plans largely failed to be implemented and were eventually not used at all.
The attraction of Hoshin planning is that it includes the implementation or the doing of what is planned as well as the review of what has been done. The planning processes that I had grown accustomed to separate the formulation of the plans from the implementation of them. The course explains that plans are best formulated by those responsible for their implementation.
Discover the secret of deploying company strategies.......2002-05-29
Beyond Strategic Vision is a great introduction to Hoshin Kanri -
the Japanese method for deploying goals and objectives throughout a company. The authors include basic tools for developing plans and walk through the use of basic forms and processes for making sure the company plan is consistently deployed throughout the firm.
Excellent hands on book about hoshin.......2000-04-21
Beyond Strategic Vision is a hands on book describing how youcan practically introduce hoshin planning. It describes the processfrom beginning to end. Prior to buying this book I had another hoshin book "Hoshin Kanri, Policy Deployment for successful TQM" but that one was much more abstract and theoretic. I would recommend a reader interested to learn about hoshin planning to buy Beyond Strategic Vision.
Strategic Planning Made Easy.......1999-12-28
This book presents a comprehensive way to create a strategic planning system. It is easy to read and has plenty of examples of Hoshin Kanri. Hoshin planning is one of the most powerful tools that I have ever used.
