Book Description
Kia Lindroos's study is a philosophical reconstruction of Walter Benjamin's thinking, and it elaborates a cairologic perspective on political and aesthetic time. As Benjamin's thinking has become actualised, especially in the 20th fin de siecle, the book presents a detailed view of his thinking. Kia Lindroos constructs an alternative interpretation on history, time, politics and art, approached through the moment of the Now (Jetztzeit). In the first section, she elaborates the critique of chronologic-linear way of understanding history. Through a close reading of Benjamin's "Work of Art" essay, the second section examines the problems of origins, authenticity and traditions of art through the ideas of artistic avant-garde and politicization of aesthetics. The end of the book discusses the concept of image and the new images as an Image-space (Bildraum) of action. The historical examples of the interwar political and artistic scenes, as well as the analysis of Chris Marker's short film "La Jete", illustrate the ideas developed throughout the book, and show the images of time by opening the individual experience towards more collective temporal experiences, such as death, dreaming and memory.
Book Description
In the winter of 1970, Dave Bohn found the surviving negatives of Darius and Tabitha Kinsey. Bohn and his colleague, Rodolfo Petschek, initiated a long-term effort to reproduce in book form the magnificent Kinsey archive. Here you’ll find Darius and Tabitha Kinsey’s lifework on display in this volume featuring 53 superb photographs of the logging industry’s steam locomotives, historical essays by John Labbe on each locomotive and the logging operations it served, and excerpts from conversations with some of the oldtime engineers, firemen, and brakemen.
Customer Reviews:
Great Kinsey photographs.......2007-03-17
This is an excellent book with great photos of many geared locomotives. A must have for anyone wanting to detail a model of a geared locomotive, or just for looking at the pictures. Each photo has a short narrative describing the photo. A well done book.
Quality throughout.......1999-01-02
This is a beautifully produced work of a master photographer. The large format duotone prints are a joy to look at, with crisp detail and lovely tones. The book provides excellent examples of Darius' ability to capture the majestic beauty of hard working (but well cared for) steam locomotives (both geared and rod), along with the people whose lives they touched (engine crew, loggers, camp crew and families). I would have paid $20 each for several of the prints in this book. This is primarily a "picture book", but the additional commentary from railroaders and loggers of the Kinsey era adds that personal touch that the photographs so often contain.
Superb!.......1998-10-28
This book is a source of absolutely excellent photos of Shays, Heislers, and Climaxes used in the logging industry in the Pacific Northwest. With his huge box cameras and glass image plates, Kinsey was to B&W photography of the period as IMAX is to color motion pictures of today. The photos are the best B&W photographs I have ever seen on any subject. They are definitely of museum quality.
Geared Steam Locomotive Works
Compilation of Incredible Locomotive Photographs.......1995-12-29
I have looked at many hundreds of railroad books (and well over 100,000 photos), but the photographs in this volume are the best I've ever seen. Kinsey used a view camera and 11"x14" glass plate negatives to produce large contact prints for sale to the subjects (locomotive crew members) early in this century. The results are absolutely stunning; every photo has extraordinary tone and detail, impossible to produce with the small format (35mm and rollfilm) cameras commonly available today. This is a "must have" book for any photographer who wants to see what print quality large negatives are capable of producing.
Darius Kinsey is the "Ansel Adams" of railroad photography.
Book Description
A magnificent collection of 206 classic duotone photographs of the Pacific Northwest taken in the first half of the century by renowned photographers Darius and Tabitha Kinsey. A stunning book of photography and a testament to the beauty of the region and the colorful life of its people. Captures the romance and rugged splendor of the Northwest--the glaciers, streams, trees, and loggers. Printed on high-quality matte art paper. Over 50,000 copies of earlier editions sold by Chronicle Books.
Customer Reviews:
Kinsey Photographer of the Pioneering West.......2000-05-19
In this over size tome, Rodolfo Petschek & Dave Bohn have culled from Kinsey's 4,500 extant negatives, a magnificent collection of duotone photographs. Together with memorabilia of this loving working couple's marriage & contributions by their children this is one amazing family album! A must for anyone interested in early photography & pioneering the great Northwest. END
A look at our past through the camera of a genius........1997-02-13
The genius of Darius and Tabitha Kinsey becomes clear early on in this book. Mr. Kinsey roamed the Pacific Northwest, visiting logging camps and homesteads to photograph the people there. All photographs are make on glass plates ranging in size from 8"x10" to 20"X24". Plates were shipped back to Tabitha who would develop them and make prints which Darius would sell to the subjects. On one level, these are formal portraits of working men, women and their machines. And yet, the humanity of every subject somehow shines through. These are not faces staring into a camera lens. These are people caught in a moment, telling us of their lives from times long past. The photographs can stand alone or be viewed as a history of life in hard times

See you in the funny pages.......2004-12-07
This book is a must. Not just for gay men, but for members of your family. I have given so many copies of "Domesticity Isn't Pretty" to friends and family members that I have lost count. It deals with the reality of gay couples, with humor and a realistic touch, so lacking in many gay author's work. Besides, once you give them "Domesticity Isn't Pretty," you can bet they'll seek out Tim Barela's three other Leonard and Larry books, as well!
Leonard Goldman is an architect. Larry Evans runs a Leather Store on Santa Monica Boulevard. Together, they deal with marriage, divorce, children, childbirth of grandchildren, the fact that a son may be gay, and who stole the cookies. Well, maybe the cookies aren't the most typical dilemma in anyone's family, but these men feel real, like neighbors.
When Larry's son David makes a very public coming out at his local high school prom, it completely unsettles his fatherhood expectations. Given that Larry, a gay man, is as rattled by the discovery that his offspring is gay makes him just like the rest of us. He's not a Super Human, he's just an Every Dad. Larry must suddenly face a reality that he takes for granted in his everyday life, and it's revelatory to come from a gay book.
One of the other fun things about this volume is that you get to watch the evolution of Leonard and Larry from being side characters in Barela's other strips to the heroes of their own. The introduction by Andy Mangles chronicles Tim's early strips for biker magazines, and how Tim came to terms then eventually came out through his art. Reading about Barela's growth and self realization parallels the growths of Leonard and Larry, making the stories all the more essential and commonplace to gays and lesbians everywhere. Maybe "Domesticity Isn't Pretty," but it sure is realistic. Funny, too. Get this! Get two. Spread the Leonard and Larry world.
Hysterically funny and touching as well!.......2002-04-06
This book was one of the best I have read in a long time. Leonard and Larry are the more realistic couple I have seen in a comic in years. Their shenanigans are awesome and their relationship is truly touching as well. Nice to see two "normal" men with "normal" lives who are so much in love.
Definitely not for the closed-minded.......2000-07-19
This book is, arguably, the funniest thing I have ever read in my life. Seeing these "normal" gay guys (and girls, too) has helped me face my own homosexuality. This book can (and should) be enjoyed by mature, open-minded readers of any and all persuasions.
A great read for every gay man.......1999-11-16
Leonard is a timeless comic strip that is as fresh today as when it was written. If you would like to see what we are really like and how similar we are to the straight couples in this great land of our BUY THIS BOOK.
wonderful!!!.......1999-10-18
this book is a fantastic insight into the mind of the gay male in society. when i bought it, the woman who sold it to me said I would be surprised how much it mimics straight married people's relationships, and, as a straight, married female, I can sympathize with Leonard's mother controlling his every move!
Bravo Tim!!!!
Book Description
Now Wang Shuo, easily Chinas coolest and most popular novelist, applies his genius for satire and cultural irreverence to one of the worlds sacred rituals, the Olympic Games. In Please Dont Call Me Human, he imagines an Olympics where nations compete not on the basis of athletic prowess, but on their citizens capacity for humiliationand China is determined to win at any cost. Banned in China for its rudeness and vulgarity, this astonishing, tripped-out novel is filled with outlandish antics that have earned Wang Shuo his own genre, hooligan literature.
Customer Reviews:
Almost Quit.......2007-08-23
I'm bullheaded and will finish most every book which I did here but came close to putting it down for good.
I guess the thing I got out of it was the Chinese thought of "saving face" no matter how unredeemable the
situation is.
Kafka-esque. But I mean that in a good way.......2001-01-23
One of the funniest books I've read in a while, "Please Don't Call Me Human" goes way beyond being a satire of Chinese nationalism--it's an hysterical condemnation of how far people will go for fame. So original, each outrageous event is a huge surprise.
The Olympics of Humiliation.......2000-09-29
Don't Call Me Human is a shockingly fun read filled with off-color humor and disgusting detail. The plot revolves around a shady Beijing organization called MobCom, which is desperate to vindicate China's humiliating loss at the hands of an oafish American wrestler. MobCom's search for a modern-day Chinese hero who knows the secrets of the Boxers (who, among other things, mistakenly thought they were immune to the power of firearms) finds its unfortunate object in a Beijing pedicab driver named Tang Yuanbao. Written by China's most famous liumang (low-life slacker is an acceptable translation), Wang Shuo, the novel follows the miseducation and shameless promotion of Tang by MobCom, an endeavor which requires multiple press conferences ridiculously devoid of content, ballet lessons given by an octogenarian in an abandoned art gallery, an unbelievable mock-military excercise in which Tang single-handedly defeats more than one battalion, and even an eventual sex change. The rise and fall of Tang and his backers (who manage to consume 7,000 packages of instant noodles, 100 kilos of tea, and 14000 cigarettes in their first week of hardly working) is the best-told tale of slacking off and deep national/personal humiliation you're ever likely to read.

Book Description
Photography might be called the lost cause of cinema, gone in projection and too soon forgotten. But what is the mysterious region between photography and narrative cinema, between the photogram—a single film frame—and the illusion of motion we recognize as the movies?
In this ambitious, sophisticated study, Garrett Stewart discusses the photogram not only as the undertext of screen images but also in its unexpected links to the early modernist writings of James, Conrad, Forster, Joyce, and others. Engaging the work of such media theorists as Eisenstein, Benjamin, Kracauer, Bazin, Baudry, Cavell, Deleuze, and Jameson, this study pursues the suppressed photogram as it ripples the narrative surface of several dozen films from Lang and Chaplin through Bergman, Coppola, and beyond. To locate the exact repercussions of such effects, Stewart includes over three hundred frame enlargements drawn from genres as different as science fiction, film noir, and recent Victorian costume drama.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent product from Malhavoc press.......2005-07-21
this is the lastest from Malhavoc press. book of Roguish luck deals with the sneaky types, you know rogues and such.
The book opens with three new rogue classes. The first is the bandit who is a outdoors type of thief who can be difficult to track and has several types of sneaky types of fighting like eye strike and low blow. The second is the gutter mage who has a unique spell list and the ability to improvise or steal spell. The last is the shadow thief who sells his soul to the plane of shadow. He has the neat feats for creating shadow familiars and at higher levels actually creating shadows. There are three prestige classes also described, the deadheart gangster, the fortune hunter, and the silver tongue charmer.
the next two chapters deal with additions to the sneak attack like ranged and silent sneak attacks and guilds and gangs.
Gambling is the next chapter with sections dealing with fictional games of chance and how to deal with them as well as cheating and other sundries.
There is a luck system described in the next chapter. Each class has a certain amount of luck points per level that can be used. It looks similar to action points or drama points that can be found in other games.
Spells are next. I particularly like the offical title of the spell and the slang name for the spell. Spells like charming lie spell(official name) and its slang name trust me boys or card control(official)/slang I'll flip you for it. Many of the spells add or subtract from the luck pools so if you dont use the luck system there arent as many spells to work with.
There are new feats. Many of these feats also deal with luck points but there are some that I like like cool under pressure and crowd slipping. The first allows you to take 10 for certain skills even if you are under pressure and crowd slipping allows you to move through crowds in a full normal speed.
New equipment and magic items is next. there is the blarney elixir that allows a +2 on bluff and diplomacy checks and armor of climbing.
The last two sections deal with locks and bribes and contacts and the mechanics for each.
In all I enjoyed this book as I pretty much have with the Malhavoc press stuff and would recommend it to those with interest in thieving for their game. It would be a good item with either a player or a DM

Customer Reviews:
Do yourself a favor and buy this book.......2005-10-03
This book is geared towards mostly small businesses and even micro businesses like mine. I recommend this book to ANYONE with no background in sales or marketing. Anyone can use the number of great ideas in it.
Bullet Points!.......2005-05-09
This book reads much like bullet points - no wasted language - just straight to the points without fluff. Great book for those relatively new to marketing.
Lots of great real ideas / examples!.......2003-09-06
This book is different than any other marketing book. The author's other book explains marketing really well. This book gives more than 1001 examples of how people have really done successful marketing. The book has twenty-five or thirty chapters on every marketing topic you can think of, from the Internet, to postcards, to customer service, to sales, to publicity. In other words, you go to the type of marketing you are interested in and read the examples of what other people have done. Within the first few pages of that topic your head will be filled with many brilliant ideas. Some you can borrow directly. Some you can combine. Some you can adapt.
A Quick Start Tips For the Beginner.......2003-01-16
"1001 Ways to Market Your Services" is broken down into a number of small chapters dealing with various marketing methods and offers some great ideas on how to get the message out. The author calls upon his own experiences as well as from the exploits of others to demonstrate strategies that really do work. While Mr. Crandall expresses a great amount of enthusiasm for marketing he does draw the line on some practices that may rub the wrong way and cast suspicion upon the integrity of the marketing business. He walks a fine line and his sound advice should be followed to the letter.
This book has good information and is very good for people with limited marketing experience and ideas. It does not give much detail on setting up a marketing campaign. This title translated into Russian is very successful in Moscow.
#1002 ý Market YOU!.......2001-05-28
This book has some great tips, but when it comes to marketing your services, nothing replaces a *personal* publicity plan. To position your small business, you have to position YOURSELF. Bottom line is that people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you.
