3 out of 5 stars not up to par with 365 days.......2003-01-31

Perhaps I am slightly biased, being not only an adult, but I read the original 365 days edition first. I am always on the lookout for children oriented books that help teach geography and anthropology, so naturally I jumped towards this one. While the book takes on the nice perspective of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's grandson, who explains what his grandfather does and what aerial photography is, there are many flaws thereafter.

The book highlights certain photographs and explains where they were taken and something about the place they occur. Unfortunetly, whoever chose which images to put into the book focused largely on Africa - Morrocco to be specific, and ignored some regions of the world entirely. I understand that Arthus-Bertrand cannot fly everywhere, but the original 365 days book covers more countries and continents.

Secondly, the text has poor science for the grade the book is supposedly aimed at. While I understand this isn't a textbook, it should still be educational.

Lastly, I was slightly dissapointed in how the location of where these countries actually are was underplayed. Didn't we just hear the horrid results of a worldwide geography examination, that clearly showed that we need to put more geography into education?

I do want to add though, that the majority of the photographs were well chosen for the target audience, and I think that its important that the additional perspective of aerial photography is added to a child's education. For a child, I recommend this book, but for a family, sharing 365 days would do just as well.

Daddy's Girl is a powerful book that uses a childlike graphic style to explore the adolescence of a young girl, Lily, whose life is being destroyed by sexual abuse. Drechsler pulls no punches in her depiction of incest, and many scenes are hard to read, but this book shows that comics can be a vehicle for serious subjects; the drawings pull the reader into her world more completely than the written word ever could. Drechsler's depiction of childhood is perfect, and there are happy moments within the horror of Lily's life. In one chapter, Lily and a friend contemplate suicide, then walk into the woods, away from their problems. In the last panel, as they sit eating tiny wild strawberries, there is a moment of hope which resonates long after the book is finished.

        4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2003-08-08

I've never been much for the underground comics style (purposefully ugly, almost Picasso-esque character designs with very hard lines, etc), but I didn't mind this one so much, since the underground style fit better with the story (two stories actually, the longer one about a girl who is molested by her father, the other about a girl who is raped by a pot-head) than, say, the cute character designs of Rumiko Takahashi's in her "Laughing Target" comic.

As far as the story goes, it seems a little too familiar at times, but then there's always something in common in stories about abuse. The ending of the longer story is what sets this apart from the others, the author having come up with a way for the character to rise above the abuse and to become her own person again in an original way.

5 out of 5 stars A GIFTED ARTIST AND STORYTELLER!.......2000-06-22

Debbie Dreschler's work has a dream like quality to it - lots of curved lines and minimal color schemes. Her drawings are unique and to put it simply, beautiful.

Daddy's Girl is a collection of comic stories following a young girl as she tries to cope with her father's molestations and her relationships with her peers.

The awkwardness of childhood is so perfectly re-created in this work. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Also, check out Debbie's comic "Nowhere". It's done in a beautiful two color style, but the subject matter is similiar.

          Book Description

A new edition of a long out-of-print Fantagraphics classic.

Fantagraphics Books is proud to re-release one of the most powerful and moving books in its distinguished publishing history: Debbie Drechsler's first collection of short comic stories, Daddy's Girl. Originally published in 1995 and distributed only to comic book specialty stores, Daddy's Girl was ahead of its time: Two years before The Kiss, Kathryn Harrison's critically acclaimed story of her incestuous relationship with her father, Dreschler's account of her abuse at the hands of her father, told from the point of view of an adolescent, is one of the most searingly honest, empathetic, and profoundly disturbing uses of the comics medium in its history.

Rendered entirely in black and white, Drechsler's meticulous brush lines gather into heavy textures that suggest the claustrophobic tension of the environment that threatens her pre-teen and adolescent female protagonists. Characters such as Lily, who can't escape her father's abuse, and Franny, a girl whose desire to be accepted leads her into dangerous territory, struggle not to be visually and emotionally overwhelmed. Both girls are rendered in chunky, rounded lines, as if they've been shaped by the oppressive weight of their blandly suburban milieu, where pretending that everything is all right and maintaining the status quo is prized above truth and upheaval. However, Drechsler's characters also have wide-open eyes, suggesting that they still maintain their innocence, and their world does contain some beauty and hope, as long as the characters have the resolve to look for it: art and creation is offered as a form of salvation. Central to this quasi-memoir is Lily's relationship to her father—a confused jumble of fear, trepidation, and love.

Drechsler's book was nominated for an Ignatz award the year it was released, and she went on to create the critically acclaimed The Summer of Love. With the critical and commercial success of mature and uncompromising works by women cartoonists such as Fun Home, Squirrel Mother, and Persepolis, Daddy's Girl should receive serious media attention and find a responsive readership.

                  Book Description

The Treatise on Harpsichord Tuning (1643/50) was the first French document to discuss keyboard performance practice in any detail. Jean Denis was both a harpsichord builder of renown and the organist of a prominent Parisian church, and he thus qualifies as an authority worthy of careful study.

The treatise addresses numerous matters of interest to both scholars and performers, including temperament, ornamentation, fugue, and the use of the organ in liturgical practice. Also included in the treatise are a keyboard prelude designed to reveal errors in tuning and two delightful anecdotes attesting to the power of music. The forthright character of Denis's writing lends a unique and distinctly enjoyable tone to the work.

Vincent Panetta's edition of Denis's treatise includes a generously annotated English translation of the original, along with an extensive Introduction that places Denis and his treatise in a historical context.

After torture as a child and not knowing any nurturing outside of cruelty, Prince Conar of Serenia is loved and returns that deepest of feeling to his wife, Princess Anya "Liza" Elizabeth. Before meeting and falling love with Conar, Liza was a member of the Daughters of the Sea. Together they are a formidable team dedicated to the destruction of the Brotherhood of the Domination.

Conar's twin brother Galen wants his sibling dead and Liza by his side. The Brotherhood of the Domination evil sorcerer Kaileel Tohre sees Galen as a pawn to use to regain control of Conar, as he once had when he subjected the lad to his abusive hegemony. He plans to lure Conar back to the Domination's Great Abbey where he ruled supreme over Conar the child. Liza will serve as bait for Conar will risk his life and his freedom to keep her safe even if it means completing the Rite of Passage to become "One of the Chosen" with the powers of the White and the Black Paths.

The second tale in the "WindLegends" saga is a fantastic fantasy that as with the first tale, WINDKEEPER, the story line is character driven with an intriguing triangle. Liza and Kaileel "compete" for the "affection" of Conar while Galen wants him dead as he covets his sibling's relationships with the two of them. It is the love-hate that Kaileel and the hate that Galen bring to the plot that turns WINDSEEKER into a unique fabulous tale that can stand alone, but it would behoove the audience to start with the excellent WINDKEEPER to understand the fab four even better.

Prince Conar McGregor and his wife, Princess Anya "Liza" Elizabeth, were still deep in love. Conar and his father, King Gerren, ruled the Serenia region of the world. Liza was part of the Multitude, one of the Daughters of the Sea. Few knew that, of course. She was more well known for her ability with a crossbow. Conar and Liza were dedicated in their quest to destroy the Brotherhood of the Domination.

Conar's evil twin, Galen, wanted Conar dead and Liza by his side. Knowing this, the Domination planned to use Galen as a way to force Conar into returning to the Great Abbey of the Domination - from where he had escaped just before the age of thirteen.

The sorcerer known as Kaileel Tohre had always had a dark fascination with Conar. He wanted Conar the same way Liza did, as mate. To save Liza, Conar would return to the Domination and complete the Rite of Passage to become "One of the Chosen". Then he would go through the Final Rite of Consecration. If Conar lived through it, he would BE "The Chosen One of the Chosen"! Conar would possess the combined power of the White and the Black Paths.

The battle between good and evil continues!

***** RATED R for dark fantasy scenes and violence. No one under the age of 17 should read this series! Now that I have stated that, if you like your fantasy novels to be "anything goes", then this author should be on the top of your Favorites list. I never knew what would happen next and often it was the worst thing possible. It kept my on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end and hungry for the next book! WINDSEEKER, by Charlotte Boyett-Compo, the latest installment in the Wind Legend Saga, continuing the great love affair between Prince Conar McGregor and his wife Liza, in addition to the battle against the evil of the Dominion, a sect of evil determined to conquer mankind.

Conar holds a long denied appointment with destiny. As a child, Conar fell victim to the Brotherhood of the Domination, those who would use his throne to serve their needs. In WINDSEEKER, the Dominion uses his brother Galen and wife Liza to lure Conar into their evil clutches, intending to complete the rites begun when Conar was a boy. In those early days, Conar was victim of the evil priest's desires and lusts. When he came home to his father's palace, his spirit was broken, he was ashamed to live, and tried to commit suicide. Nevertheless, the much-scarred boy survived to become a devoted, loving man and future king.

No man goes to the Great Abbey unless he seeks the Rites of Passage into the Order of Dominion, but when Dominion kidnaps Liza with Galen's aid, Conar risks his very soul to rescue her. Conar knows that the Dominion may allow him to go back to to his father's kingdom, even sit upon the throne of his homeland, but They would rule him; They would control who and what he was. He also knew the Dominion might even allow him to keep Liza at his side, but it won't matter. After the Rites of Passage, he will be One of Them, and Liza would be lost to him forever. The Dominion strives to posses Conar because of his special gifts; that is, he will have the combined power of The White and The Black Paths.

Once again Boyett-Compo weaves a fascinating tale of love, betrayal and passion; one that holds the reader rapt, praying for a glorious hero's survival and mourning the damage inflicted by evil. As Boyett-Compo's Wind Legends saga continues to develop its mythos, the extraordinary power of the tale leaves the reader enthralled, appalled, and desperate for more. Combining the Brotherhood of the Dominion with its counter-group, the Sisters of the Multitude, Boyett-Compo delivers richly varied characters of depth and power. I for one look forward to learning more of the mysterious sisters and of the gifts Liza keeps hidden. Hurry, Charlie, I can't wait for book three! Very highly recommended.

From test tubes to the Wall Street IPO and beyond, this is the riveting true story of a start-up pharmaceutical company working to create an anti-AIDS drug. Scientifically accurate, yet written with an attention to plot, timing, dialogue, and development of character more characteristic of the best thrillers.

                          Book Description

Join journalist Barry Werth as he pulls back the curtain on Vertex, a start-up pharmaceutical company, and witness firsthand the intense drama being played out in the pioneering and hugely profitable field of drug research. Founded by Joshua Boger, a dynamic Harvard- and Merck-trained scientific whiz kid, Vertex is dedicated to designing -- atom by atom -- both a new life-saving immunosuppressant drug, and a drug to combat the virus that causes AIDS.

You will be hooked from start to finish, as you go from the labs, where obsessive, fiercely competitive scientists struggle for a breakthrough, to Wall Street, where the wheeling and dealing takes on a life of its own, as Boger courts investors and finally decides to take Vertex public. Here is a fascinating no-holds-barred account of the business of science, which includes an updated epilogue about the most recent developments in the quest for a drug to cure AIDS.

I thought this book was a really interesting insight into what it takes to start a drug company. Being a grad student in biology, I'm definitely open to non-conventional academic options and I read this book because of that. Thrilling and well-written, Barry Werth gave an intimate account of the gruelling process of starting an independent drug company. The narrative got rather boring at times, but overall it's a worthwhile read.

                          4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2005-05-05

This epic give an in-depth account of the creation of Vertex, a company formed with the hope of creating perfect drugs molecule by molecule. Such drugs would be free of side effects and worth billions. It follows the first few years of this business and Werth tells the story of the three founders and their struggles to break their product into the market, while having a viable product to sell. This cunning work demonstrates how wealth can be created through science, and how new business' can attempt make a profit.

5 out of 5 stars difficult, fascinating, and compelling birth of a company.......2004-10-09

This is the story of the first few years of Vertex, a bioventure that sought to create drugs that were constructed molecule by molecule - it is supposed to be "rational drug design". In exchange for allowing the company to check his work for accuracy and proprietary disclosures, Werth was admitted into the inner circle of the company, with both executives and scientists, for four years.

Werth offers masterful descriptions of both the science and the intricacies of the busisess deals. The work is similar to that of Tracy Kidder in "The Soul of a New Machine" and, in my opinion, of the same quality.

At the center of the story is Vertex's founding visionary, Joshua Boger, formerly a researcher at Merck. He reasoned that instead of screening soil samples and insect secretions in a hot or miss approach in thousands of petri dishes, he could design drugs atom by atom to bind to - and thus inactivate - molecules instrumental to the disease process. In theory, these drugs would be without side effects: because of the precision of the design, they would adhere to their target alone, allowing beneficial enzymes of other chem reactions to go on unimpeded.

Boger's first target molecule was FKBP, which he believed was a crucial agent of the immune system. By blocking it, he hoped to prevent the host's body from rejecting transplanted organs. While Boger was out raising money (eventually reaching $60 million), Vertex's researchers hunkered down to isolate and analyze FKBP, whose molecular mechanic remained poorly understood.

Unfortunately, what happened is a great example of the difficulties in marrying business to cutting-edge science: after over two years of pushing themselves to the brink of nervous collapse, Vertex scientists found difficulties with FKBP. Even worse, Boger's arch rival, a prof at Harvard, discovered why. The prof beat VErtex, Werth argues, because he remained outside the venture capital game and could thus concentrate totally on the science and could openly collaborate with them rather than hide proprietary results.

Nonetheless, driven and confident as ever, Boger turned his scientific team onto the new problem. Thru all of this, Boger comes off as a fascinating character: the son of a suicide, he is unshakably convinced that he can bend nature as well as the business world to his will. The reader sees what lies behind the herculean efforts of him and his team.

Warmly recommended as a rivetting tale of human endeavor that embraces the true complexity.

5 out of 5 stars The Billion Dollar Molecule - One Company's Quest..........2004-02-27

A thouroughly enjoyable read, Werth sheds light on the personaliteis and complexities of an amazing and multifaceted business. Throughout, the author uncovers the unseen deal-making, hand-wringing, and fist clenching that dominate the start of Vertex, a strucure-based paharmaceutical firm.

I particularly enjoyed the background on the Boger-Schreiber collaboration and rivalry, and the ensuing rivalry in Vertex's own labs. Further, following the last few years of Vertex's ups and downs via the Internet has been thoroughly enjoyable.

Werth's style is easliy read, and his obvious unhindered access to Vertex and its people make the story enjoyable, suspenseful, and dramatic.
