Lack of Index.......2007-08-23
I would have given the Photographers Guide to Yellowstone & the Titons a 5 Star Rating if there was an index in the back of the book for easy reference while out in the field. It is difficult trying to remember what page the subject that your looking at is on. That being said, it is still a good reference book on the area and I do not regret buying it.
Great for Novice Photographer.......2007-07-06
I bought this book to take along on a vacation trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons in mid-June 2007. I found it to be a great source to take photos of often photographed natural icons at different views and angles as well as some shots that the average traveler would not know about without this book. For instance I would not have known about the great shots that can be taken of the Mormon Row Barns with the Tetons in the background without this book. Perhaps more seasoned photographers may know about these different places but I for one would not have had a clue. I would have ended my vacation with the same shots of Yellowstone and the Tetons that everyone else has. The book took me off the beaten path where I got some great shots and expierenced the pleasures of getting away from the main road.
Other valuable information was the instructions on what time of day is best to shoot a certain shot, tips about exposure, and valuable tips about using filters that made my pictures stand out.
The book was concise, accurate, and very easy to follow and understand for an novice like me.
Right-on, comprehensive.......2007-05-29
A caveat: I am a total amateur who takes pictures only during the one or two annual vacations using very simple equipment!
I just came back after 5 days at YS and GT parks. I was very impressed by how accurate Joseph's suggestions were -- in terms of the preferred times, angles and such to take pictures from. For example, Joseph had suggested taking pictures of the Old Faithful NOT from the benches in front of the Inn, but from the lodge side or from another angle which would include some colorful runoffs in the picture. I managed to pick up a rainbow with the waterfall from Uncle Tom's trail in my video (my still camera did nt pick it up). Other suggetsions also turned out to be as accurate and useful. More importantly, it is absolutely free of fluff and hence you can read it in a 2 hours flight to YS!
When I first looked at Joseph's pictures, I felt like there was probably a tad excessive use of filters to exaggerate the contrasts (the blues appeared to me to be a bit more blue than what would have been real). I never got to verify this as the sky was grey in YS and GT when I was there! Anyways, it is just a matter of taste. If you like Joseph's results (they are stunning), you can use the detailed input he provides on the use of the polarizer and the filters. Even otherwise, his suggestions on just the spots and times to take pictures from make the book very valuable.
The book is organized based on features -- waterfalls, geysers, animals and so on. That is probably useful for many. However, for family vacationers, coverage by location (Norris, West Thumb,...) would probably have been easier to use. I had to correlate the suggested times for photography from Joseph with the info I got on how to cover each location from another excellent book (YS Treasures by J Chappel).
Overall, I strongly recommend the book.
A great guide.......2006-11-03
As a beginning photographer, I found this guide to be invaluable on our trip to Yellowstone this fall. It is clearly written and complete in its coverage of the park. I would recommend it for anyone from beginners to advanced intermediate photographers.
Excellent for planning a photo trip to the parks!.......2006-03-17
I have used his book to schedule what I will visit and photograph at different times of the day and marked the good locations he described. It will stay in the front seat of my car to check as I go from place to place. I even made a schedule of what to see at sunrise, morning, afternoon, and sunset. I would like to have a book like this for every natural area I plan to visit and photograph. But I basically ignored his suggestions for filters and what seems like an overuse of a polarizer. Otherwise it has been a great help to plan my trip.

Book Description
"Where does Star Trek come from? Why is it so popular? How does it go about creating a coherent world? Literary critics may take literature seriously, but they often look down on popular forms such as television shows.
"I feel differently. I think the meaning of the series can best be captured by looking at how it successfully creates a coherent universe. Like any great work of art or literature, the Star Trek universe has an integrity and a resonance all its own, a completeness unrivaled by any other kind of science fiction, whether movie, television show, or novel. The unique character of the series, taken not as a group of loosely connected stories but as a viable whole, is the subject of this book."
--From the Introduction to
The Meaning of Star Trek
Star Trek has no equal. Easily the most cerebral show on television, it brought a literary sophistication to the raw material of science fiction and confounded all the formulas of television. By taking classic stories and placing them in strange new contexts, Star Trek became a modern Odyssey in outer space, a set of stories so basic to our culture that they can be told over and over again.
The Meaning of Star Trek captures the essence of this timeless television masterpiece by linking the parallel universes of classical literature and popular culture. Thomas Richards examines its portrayals of contact and conflict with other species and other cultures; its deep explorations of character and identity, and its complex conception of the idea of the individual self; its remarkably rich and varied use of story and myth; and its profound appeal to our shared sense of wonder, a reverence and awe for that which science cannot explain.
Enlightening, provocative, and enormously entertaining,
The Meaning of Star Trek is essential reading for even the most casual admirer of the Star Trek universe, as well as a brilliant introduction to the worlds of literature, myth, and science fiction.
This book was not prepared, approved, licensed, or endorsed by any entity involved in creating or producing the Star Trek television series or films.
Customer Reviews:
Not a valid genre?.......2004-01-04
Various reviewers have sneered at Richards for analyzing and attempting to find meaning in what is "just a tv show.", treating it like it's "the Bible or Shakespeare". After all, the show's producers were motivated only by capitalist greed, and so couldn't produce a vision such as Richards credits them with. Why not?
A Tale of Two Cities was written in installments, for Dickens' profit. Shakespeare's plays were produced primarily to generate income for the Bard. The capitalist motivations for a work doesn't disqualify it of any merit. Granted, the nature of television makes it less intrinsicly intellectual than books. Still, a television show containing purpose and thought is possible--if accomplished far to seldomly (see the current range of garbage offered). Such a creation was Star Trek.
I find The Meaning of Star Trek a brilliant, thoughtful analysis of the politics, diplomacy and intellect of this fictional yet consistent work. I recommend it for anyone who enjoyed The Next Generation, whcih is the primary subject of analysis. For those who enjoy this book, I also consider The Ethics of Star Trek worth reading, though considerably inferior to 'Meaning'.
Not even close..........2003-07-15
I have read many non-fiction Star Trek books of this type and I must say, hands down, this is the worst. At best, the book is factually inaccurate (ex. "Junior" is not the name of any episode I am familiar with, the episode being referred to is "Galaxy's Child"). At worst the book is still factually inacurate, it generalizes themes from one example which the author distorts to make it sound like it is a frequent occurace(ex. "Usually when {Spock} comes out of {a 'spiritual discipline'}, he admits he has gone too far and wants to rejoin Starfleet...". How many times has this happened? One. Yet the author clearly indicates that is happens all the time!), and in doing all this he isults the intelligence of anyone who has ever seen more than a handfull of star trek episodes, and that is probably going to include anyone who is reading the book. In fact, I wouldn't even give it one star, but, unfortunately, this is not an option.
Absurd Premise and Flawed Analysis.......2002-09-14
If the fact that legions of people regularly trek (no pun intended) into the mountains to learn the Klingon language isn't proof enough that some folks take Star Trek far too seriously, then this book should be the final piece of evidence. This book looks at Star Trek, particularly The Next Generation, and venerates it as if it were the Holy Bible or the complete works of William Shakespeare.
One thing the author fails to fully take into account is that Star Trek, in all its forms, is, ultimately, a television show and it's raison d'etre is to generate profits. This is what keeps the show alive and, therefore, has a correlating influence on the writing. The writers of Star Trek, like any other show, attempt to pen scripts that the show's target audience will find entertaining, which maintains viewership and keeps advertising dollars flowing. In other words, all of the noble and laudable ideals of Star Trek are driven by nothing other than good old fashioned capitalism, yet Richards writes as if Gene Roddenberry, et al were completely untainted by such influence and were scribing a treatise on the human condition for the ages.
The author is classically trained and, to his credit, he uses his skill to craft a literary-style criticism, but the fact is there is hardly any material that could be considered critical of Star Trek. The book is technically well written, but the general arguments are akin to those made by high school aged music geeks who drone on about the poetic merit of rock lyrics, as if Richards is desperately trying to legitimize his preoccupation with Star Trek. He is so blinded by his affinity for the show that he views it through rose-colored glasses, offering only glowing praise and awed reverence. One may argue that such a fan is the only person who could write a book like this, but to maintain credibility the author must be somewhat objective.
Science fiction has the ability to capture the imagination of people like no other genre. With the possible exception of Star Wars, Star Trek has cultivated a following that has no equal. However, there is a line between enthusiasm and obsession and it seems that Star Trek has more than its share of obsessive fans who increasingly display their inability to discern fact from fiction. This is the type of person who will find this book edifying and will take it seriously. Richards has earned himself a permanent card table at future Sci Fi conventions where he can autograph this book and debate its contents endlessly with 35-year-olds in Borg costumes. The uninitiated should stay away.
sorry, but television ain't literature.......2001-04-17
This book attempts to look at Star Trek as if it was literary art as generated by a solitary genius. I mean, come on! As good as TV gets, it will never compare to Tolstoy or Nabokov. Yet Richards strains to analyse the stories for a depth that may or may not be there.
WHile as a Star Trek fan I did enjoy the descriptions and criticism in this book - you do see it in a different light - it adds up to too much about a disposable medium. Characters can't evolve much in TV, great themes cannot be explored except as formulae.
Thorough, scholarly analysis of Star Trek.......2000-02-28
This book will broaden your understanding of the Star Trek universe. Definitely worth reading by any serious Star Trek fan.

An early Jungian analysis of Classic Trek.......2001-08-22
This book, first published in 1977, was the first (as far as I know) serious attempt to analyze the psychology of Star Trek. Karin Blair, herself a Jungian, takes up the question of how characters in The Original Series (TOS) represent various Jungian archetypes in the human psyche. Using specific episodes as examples, she explores authority, masculinity and femininity, inner dualities, outer opposites of good and evil, mind versus emotion, etc. Leonard Nimoy said of this book that it is "thorough, intelligent, and meaningful" (cover blurb.) According to Gene Roddenberry's biography ("Star Trek Creator"), the Great Bird was very impressed with it also -- which is what led me to track down a copy for myself.
Especially interesting to me was Karin's analysis of the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triad as representing past (McCoy), present (Kirk), and future (Spock.) Although my own analysis differs considerably from hers (mine is based more on kabbalah than Jung), her thesis is carefully thought out and well-presented. For many early Trek fans, Karin's POV became the lens through which they viewed the triad relationships, and it remains so for many Classic Trekkers today.
Non-Jungians and modern feminists may balk at some of Karin's comments about the symbolism of women in classic Trek, especially the "Monstrous Mother" and "Disposeable Female" chapters. But before you throw the book across the room, keep in mind that these are basic themes that occur in many classic mythologies around the world. Star Trek, in turn, drew inspiration from these mythologies for many of its TOS episodes. At the very least, Karin's analysis helps explain where some of these early Trek themes came from, and why they have such wide popularity. (The section on the sex appeal of Spock among women will raise a few eyebrows!) Dated or not, this book was a groundbreaking work in its time, and should be in the library of every serious Star Trek fan.

Try Frank Stewarts books instead.......2006-12-24
This is way way deeper than Mike Lawrences "How to Read Your Opponents Cards". Don't even open the cover if you are not already an above average player.
Al Dormers "Dormer on Deduction" is a Classic I'd suggest reading over this one.
Frank Stewart has 2 books that cover the drawing of inferences.
- Better Bridge for trhe Advancing Player
- Winning Defense for the Advancing Player
I liked both of them a lot more than this one.
This one has some difficult inferences that its unlikely anyone below National Champion would be able to find at the table. The chapters on carding are found in other books on defense.
Is this book worth reading? I guess so. I'd suggest reading other books instead, and saving this for later.
Maybe 4 if you are an Advanced player.......2006-09-28
This is not a simple book, based on just counting HCP. You will need to think deeply about the bidding and play. The author presents his own ideas on bidding and defensive signaling (which he explains even if you don't agree with). There are some interesting hands and ideas. There are also many difficult hands involving Squeezes and deep thought on card play technique.
I would suggest that Intermediate players first read several other books on Deduction and save this for later.
Its worth reading, but unless you are advanced you probably won't get much out of it.
* Advanced = counting the hand is routine, comfortable with different types of squeezes and card play technique, generally experienced

Customer Reviews:
Financial Planning and Customer Experience.......2007-02-20
This book is an excellent guide to the importance of customer service in the financial planning world. Individuals willing to offer financial advice and service are everywhere - however successful financial planning firms are run by those that have paid attention to the details. A great book to give to new employees to help explain the importance of efficiency and how it correlates to a positive client experience.
A big disappointment.......2002-11-22
After all the rave reviews, I thought this would be a great book on practice management. What I got was a book by Deena Katz on Deena Katz. For example, in discussing contact management systems, she glosses over Act! and Goldmine; barely mentions Text Library System and ProTracker, but spends considerable time talking about paying $50,000 to have a consultant design a system. If you currently have a fee only practice that is grossing in the high 6-figures and want to develop it into a multi-million $ firm, like Deena Katz, then I suggest you read this book.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-28
Deena Katz, a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who has given financial advice in magazines and on TV, describes how to set up a practice as a financial planner and adviser. She discusses how to grow your business and manage your clients' lives as well as their dollars. She draws on her experience, interviews and networking with other practitioners to provide a detailed hands-on guide. She considers such issues as recruiting, hiring and firing staff, working with partners, using hardware and software and setting up effective systems. She provides tips on public relations, hiring, firing and refusing clients, and keeping good clients. Her book concludes with a targeted resource section on useful books, journals, magazines, newsletters, software programs and Web sites. We [...] highly recommend this comprehensive introductory guide. Although it is directly targeted toward individuals in the financial planning arena, many of its ideas apply to starting any type of small professional or service business.
Overrated but still I think its worth it..........2001-09-16
We Financial advisors are always looking for an edge. To often we're severely dissapointed. This book has merit and unfortunately a lot of fluff. Most in the industry know all the software available and filing systems.
What was of interest was the parts on client retention and firing clients. This was helpful
In the sense that it improved my vision of my practice I have to say it was worthwhile. However a well written article could have done the same.
Your call..
