4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-01-04

Hans Hofmann's biography is very colorful. And his essay "Search for the Real" was a good read for any artist. Even if you don't really understand it or agree with his ideas, the descriptions of plasticity and push/pull are very enlightening. I'm sure he was an amazing teacher. This book is a good read for any artist, as well as for people who do not make art (to get a better understanding of the mind of the artist). This book was great! I recommend Kandinsky's "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" as a wonderful companion to this book. Between the two your mind can encompass art and thinking that is related to art in new (maybe even familiar) ways.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-11-22

I've read a number of books on the subject, and this is by far the best. Its clarity and concision put most of the others (such as the disorganized Ohanian books) to shame.

5 out of 5 stars Best technical book in the field.......2002-03-07

As a working (nonlinear) editor, and as an editing teacher, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Six years ago I made the switch from film to computer, with Michael Rubin's book as my constant companion. Rubin writes with a keen intelligence and an implied sympathy for both the professional editor and the student trying to make sense of the complex and rapidly-changing world of post production.

Because he IS an editor, Rubin is the only technical writer I know who is able to prioritize exactly what you need to know and to tell you why you need to know it. Like any good editor, he has the ability to think macro- and microscopically at once. His post-production flowcharts, history of nonlinear, and overview of systems and distribution are unsurpassed in the field. The down-and-dirty details of digital video- subjects like timecode, telecine and 3:2 pulldown, and compression algorithms- are clearly demystified. These are sections to which I still refer! This book is always in my cutting room as a reference, and when I teach I borrow examples from the book and urge my students to purchase their own copy.

This book contains another unique feature, which is an intellectual and practical interest in editing theory. Rubin has worked not only as an editor, but also in research and development at several companies during the dawn of nonlinear technology. Thus, he is able to pose and answer the most fundamental questions: Why do we need nonlinear technology? And how can that technology serve our creative needs? What might we see in the future?

This is a book that will be helpful for anyone who is already editing at any level, or for anyone just learning about the craft. Straightforward, well-organized, and filled with humor and wisdom, this is quite simply my favorite book about the technical side of editing.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Video.......2002-02-07

Like many new editors, I came to Final Cut Pro with no NLE experience nor any knowledge of video whatsoever. In fact when I started, just over two years ago, there was not a single book on FCP. Since that time there have been a number of excellent books published about FCP. I have bought and read all of them.

During the past two years I have learned the terminology used with FCP video. But my knowledge is FCP-centeric. I had little understanding of video, it's relationship to film or it's history.

Last week I discovered "Nonlinear/4" written by Michael Rubin. I can best describe this book as a complete reference guide to all things video. But its actually more.

Each element covered in this book is in it's own section. Each section is brief, concise and clearly written. Very simple (read: clever) analogies are employed to help the reader gain understanding. While there is technical information, the book is not overly technical. There is a great deal of art, illustrations and photos. This art furthers the learning experience and is one reason that the book works so well, the art really illustrates the
                lessons being taught.

The history of film and video runs throughout the book. This history is essential to understanding how and why video is what it is today.

I learned a great deal from this book and now have a better understanding of why things are the way they are. Our modern day NLE Digital video is the result of a long legacy, going all the way back to the early days of film. This book is a great reference guide as well with a full index at the back.

I am really glad that I came across Nonlinear/4. I truly have a better understanding of what's going on with Video and how it works. This knowledge will certainly help me with FCP.

This book helped me to put aside all doubt and really get a product. It made the process very easy and was a constant help throughout the whole editing experience. Book Description

From the Arctic Circle to the equatorial jungles -- from the most isolated wilderness to the overpopulated city -- any place can be a hunting ground. It all depends on your choice of game. For Predator, that game is man, so he heads to the grounds with the biggest trophies: the Paloverde State Penitentiary. They say that when you kill a killer, all his kills belong to you, and Predator's looking to rack up the big numbers.

1 out of 5 stars Awful graphic novel: bad story, bad art.......2004-12-09

While I've only recently started reading graphic novels, I've already had the opportunity to read through virtually every book in the "Aliens" series, "Judge Dredd" series and many of the fabled cross overs "Aliens vs. ________" (superhero or other creature), "Predator vs. _______", etc...

Of all the series I've tried to catch up with, "Predator" has been one of the more difficult. The crossovers are easy to find, but the stand alones, like "Race War" have been harder to locate. After finally getting this book off Amazon (I should note this is my 42nd graphic novel) I was excited. So far only a handful of the previously mentioned series had been disappointing.

Well, "Race War" manages to be one of the worse I've read.

The story is chalk full of badly written characters, major plot holes and a stupifying amount of terrible dialogue. The book attempts to play up racial differences among humans, but its clear that the authors have no concept of what they're portraying: people in gangs talk and dress in stereotypes that no self-respecting "gansta" would ever do. The writers' own naviete is also painful in its portrayal of a lesbian character. Never in any previous graphic novel have I seen such a trainwreck of tacky writing. As I mentioned, the plot, as such, is a complete mess: the authors, in an attempt to make the story interesting, try to keep the audience in the dark until the story is under full steam. Unfortunately, they forget to actually fill in many of the questions they ask and leave the reader befuddled as to why the characters do what they do (other than to heavy-handedly move the plot).

Of course, all of this could be mitigated in some way if the Predator-related action was top notch. But amazingly enough, the Predators themselves aren't seen around very much, so we're left reading about these completely uninteresting characters.

As was mentioned in another review: the art in this graphic novel is atrocious. It starts out at a reasonable level, but by the mid-point it starts to become haphazard and unpolished. Proportions on the characters start to lose cogency and I was left with the distinct feeling that the team working on the novel was in a rush to get it done.

Again, after reading a number of related graphic novels, many including the Predator, I must give "Predator: Race War" very low marks for its sheer incompetence. 1.5 of 5.

                1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2002-09-04

Which is sad considering how great the beginning was. The story just completely falls apart and is only slightly redeemed by a pretty cool ending. But, as a whole, it fails sorry.

The main reason is that the artwork is just plain horrid. In the opening chapters it's competent enough but as the story progresses it becomes more and more ugly. I could do better than this. It's a shame considering how brilliant other Predator comics looked.

The Predator is a truly awesome and iconic character. He deserves better than this. And so this is one to forget. Check out Predator: Dark River or Kindred instead. Those are really cool. This is not.

                4 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2001-09-30

I totally "enjoyed" the storyline. I have been a fan of Mr. Vachss for many years and I was very happy to see him involved in a project like this (I am a big fan of the Predator!).
I did not recognize Cross though (for those of you who know Mr. Vachss' work, you know what I am talking about). He looked so unlike the cross I had pictured in my head. He kind of looked a litle bit goofy. Anyway, enjoyed the comic. Mr. Vachss is a great story teller.
Get this book! It might be hard to get it or to find a copy of it, but its soooo worth it!!
If you have never read any of Mr. Vachss' work, go ahead and start reading. You are going to be shocked!!!

                Bye.

                Zaida

5 out of 5 stars Predator: Race War.......2000-07-31

Andrew Vachss doing a Predator comic--it's either an absolute natural, or the weirdest combination possible, depending how ya look at it!

The whole thing started when Dark Horse's Randy Stradley planned a storyline involving a Predator hunting a serial killer. Since the Predator's victims are _de facto_ reps of the human race itself, this came down to the *human* killer, in his battle with the *alien* killer, becoming The Good Guy.

As Stradley tells us--and as one would expect--Vachss didn't think much of that idea. But that was Ok, because he had an idea of his own. Thus was "Predator: Race War" conceived and, eventually, born, as a five-issue series, collected together here.

The cover is, natch, the first thing one sees, and this one, by Ray Lago, is a winner. The Predator, a heavily-armored intergalactic Rastamon, crouches on a prison walkway, menacing and indestructible. It's a thing of beauty, and I'm *not* being facetious.

Stradley's adaptation is clean and tight, as it the artwork throughout--pencils by Raskin & Pelle, inks b Rick Bryant, and colors by Matt Hollingsworth & Pamela Rambo.

"They say that when you kill a killer, all his kills belong to you," the back cover informs us. "Well, Predator's looking to rack up the big numbers."

What better place to do so than the most maxed-out of maximum security prisons in the country? Who could possibly stop this dude?

Who else but Cross & Crew, familiar to fans of Vachss' short fiction and Dark Horse's _Cross_ series?

Be aware that Cross & crew's depiction is a bit different than fans might expect. Tiger has no stripes, fer-instance, and she's drawn a bit...err, *heftier*...than we'd expect. Cross, Fal & Rhino are more in line with the rest of the series, and the Predator is nicely done, especially in "camoflauge" mode.

The "Race War" is a double theme: first, the tension and violence along racial lines familiar to those of us who live in The Real World(tm), second, the war of the *human* race in its various shades against the Predator's alien race.

The "Gallery" section at the end features the series' covers, paintings by Dave Dorman, which are quite simply *damned* cool. IMNSHO, the covers alone are well worth the price. Do yourself a favor and order this one. It's a keeper.

This is a must have for any fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I enjoyed this book beyond measure. To me this book proves that she was no simple country girl as her insight into the future are uncanningly accurate. This book was more for adults as most of the saying and things come for her adulthood. A must read!

4 out of 5 stars Portrait of an amazing woman.......2005-12-03

In this book we get treated to a fascinating portrait of an really amazing woman who really deserved a full biographical treatment. Natacha Rambova was a woman who was born in the wrong time and place, and had to struggle against that as she made her own way in the world. As I've found out more about her, I've come more and more to feel that there are striking parallels between Natacha Rambova and Yoko Ono. Both women have been unfairly demonised for being driven strong independent women with artistic visions ahead of their time, and both are women you either love or hate for it. Both have also been accused, by their detractors, of wielding too much control over their husbands and nearly destroying their careers because of it, and both also too often are only known about in relation to the men they married. As we find out in this book, Natacha was a lot more than just Madame Valentino, particularly since that role only lasted not even six years. Mr. Morris says he became a fan of hers after seeing the costumes she designed for Alla Nazimova's ambitious art film 'Salome,' not because he was a fan of her most famous husband first, the way most people seem to become interested in Natacha. He also provides generous family background so we can see where she came from and why she became what she did. More than just Madame Valentino or an unfairly demonised woman, Natacha was also a ballet dancer, a designer of costumes and sets for films, an art collector, an Egyptologist, and a spiritualist. She also was in Spain during the time of the Spanish Civil War in the Thirites, when she was married to her second husband, and ended up taking part in that event as well. Never a woman to let her identity rest on the men she was married to, Natacha made her own name in the world, creating her own path, even at a time when not a lot of women did that. There are also a lot of great photographs.

My only complaint about the book is that it wasn't long enough! This was such a fascinating woman that the reader is left wanting more information and details, although given that this is really the first serious scholarly biography on her, it's not that big of a deal. It's a fine start. I also agree that the title is kind of disingenious. Mr. Morris goes to so many pains to prove that Natacha was an interesting capable person in her own right, even though she's most famous for her role as Madame Valentino, so why use that as the title of the book? It might mean the book sells better, but if people are to become interested in her in her own right, a better title might have been 'Madame Rambova.'

                        4 out of 5 stars NATACHA RAMBOVA - A PORTRAIT OF A LADY.......2005-05-09

Michael Morris has written a biography on a beautiful and fascinating person known to the world as Natacha Rambova. Modern women of her time, extremely talented, cultivated, sophisticated, intelligent and quite simple stunning. Natacha was an Individual loaded with ambition and determination to succeed at whatever she put her mind to in life, never to buy or sell herself out of a male dominated era.

Natacha Rambova of course started life as Winifred Shaughnessy. What I loved from the first, it even takes you further back, 1844 to the birth and up bringing of her fallen war hero father Michael Shaughnessy and also the strength and love of her mother Winifred Kimball, known for her Sharp Business mind, intelligence, four marriages and always there for her daughter. The family history is all very well covered.

Theodore Kosloff a famous Russian Dancer, Natacha's first lover, unsuccessfully tried to kill her, Kosloff pulled out a fire arm as she tried to leave him, he only wounded her, she escaped.

First, husband Rudolph Valentino the Legend we all know lives on. Troubled waters, her soul mate, with a test of equals saw them torn apart, followed by a brief affair.

Second, husband Alvaro de Urzaiz they married in 1934, she stood by her man after he ended up part of the Spanish civil war . The marriage came to an abrupt end after his affair with another women but did not divorce him for another 20 years.

It covers her most extraordinary career of ambition and determination as a dancer. Also a talented costume, set, clothes and interior designer, business manger and publicity for Valentino, a script writer, an actress, a spiritualist and a distinguished Egyptologist, this name's but a few, a women who was well travelled and educated.

Having travelled Egypt myself and seen the sites my own interpretation was a time and place of Civilization lost. Such Incredible history, I understood Natacha's strong bond when she arrived in Egypt so the last few chapters was a personal favourite for me.

Michael Morris did really well; there are photos from Natacha family's private collection never seen. This book was in Cooperation of her remaining family members and friends who knew her personally.

Sometimes Natacha was shown too saintly which I would disagree with now and again, factors maybe steered to quickly away from, in not such better moments of her life.

I did like the way we were shown that she was not cold hearted as how the press projected her, she was treated with much injustice.

One other Point The many Lives of Natacha Rambova would have been a fitting title. Michael Morris should have known better than to use Madam Valentino in the title as a selling point. After writing a wonderful piece on this lady who was strong-minded, and individual, who moved on after Valentino's death, She lead an exciting life of her own was an enchanting woman yet the title still puts her in the shadow of one man.

The book Overall was a fascinating read, I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Picked it up. Couldn't put it down.......2005-04-11

This book could have been so deliciously tacky. It could also have swung the other way and made its subject saintly. Michael Morris found just the right balance.
I first encountered Rambova in Kenneth Anger's book, "Hollywood Babylon." She intrigued me the way Yoko Ono and Courtney Love intrigue some John Lennon and Curt Kurbain fans. You wonder, 'What's Sooooo special about her?' So I approached the book with that attitude. Afterall, Rambova was married to Rudolph Valentino, a man known to this day as 'the world's greatest lover.'
But I read the last sentence of the book with great regret that the book had ended and that the experience of reading it was over. It was that good.
Michael Morris did a top-notch job on this biography and I regret that he didn't do Mae Murray, Barbara LaMarr, Corrine Griffith, etc. the same favor.
Morris went into great detail in all the right places. After I finished the book, I didn't feel like I'd read a biography about a movie star's wife who was striving to be a 'personality' in her own right. Rather, I felt that I'd read a book about a person who, like so many of us, was searching her way through life and trying to figure out why in the hell she was here. She just went about her 'search' a bit differently because she had all the right connections, the money, and the energy to do so.
But it's money in the end.

5 out of 5 stars New Perspective on a Facinating Woman.......2004-04-18

The author of this bio did not discover She-Who-Became Valentino's wife in the usual fashion, and his perspective on her is wonderful as a result. Where most people who know of her at all only experience the harpie images given by Hollywood mudrakers, Morris learned of Winifred/Natcha through her art. His interest in Natcha is the whole of her life, not just the bit with Valentino. The result is a thoughtfull, well-researched and facinating account of a remarkable life -- and one of my favorite biographies.

                        4 out of 5 stars Madame Rambova.......2003-01-05

A book about the fascinating Natacha Rambova is long overdue. Well known as the much-maligned wife of early Hollywood heart-throb Rudolph Valentino, she was also a dancer, set designer, mystic, and art collector to name just a few of her talents. However, the author's excessively rosy view of his very complex subject makes this a good book, not a great one.

Morris works hard to reverse the numerous unflattering stereotypes and rumours built around Natacha during her life. By refusing to at least explore them, he weakens the book considerably. All negative claims are swiftly - perhaps a little too swiftly - shot down. The bare details are subtly poked and prodded into a much more pleasant picture than was strictly the case. In particular, very little is made of `Monsieur Beaucaire', the notorious flop which nearly ended Valentino's career and his rough, mysterious image. This movie represented a major crisis in the marriage of the couple, as Rambova has convinced Valentino and his studio to make the film in the first place.

The end (and for that matter, much) of the Valentinos' marriage was far more acrimonious than Morris leads us to believe, and thus the portrait of Natacha he paints remains disappointingly bloodless. One topic of which more exploration is needed by further biographers of Natacha (and I hope that more is written of her) is made evident by the numerous references to her ability to work all day having had nothing to eat, and by the stomach ailment that eventually killed her. Natacha was quite obviously anorexic, and exploration into her affliction might have told us much more about her.

Natacha was not the wilful but essentially benign artiste that Morris portrays here, but nor was she the cold-hearted, ruthlessly ambitious lesbian of other historical accounts. The truth, presumably, was somewhere in between - a person far more interesting than either cliched extreme. What cannot be denied is that Rambova was an interesting, talented, and ambitious woman whose story is very worthy of telling, and the book is worth reading for that alone.

What a shame that, even after Morris' attempt to bring her out from under the shadow of her famous husband, the book must still be titled `Madame Valentino'.

                                  Book Description

This new series of fifteen books - The Food Service Professional Guide TO Series from the editors of the Food Service Professional are the best and most comprehensive books for serious food service operators available today.

These step-by-step guides on a specific management subject range from finding a great site for your new restaurant to how to train your wait staff and literally everything in between. They are easy and fast -to-read, easy to understand and will take the mystery out of the subject. The information is "boiled down" to the essence. They are filled to the brim with up to date and pertinent information.

The books cover all the bases, providing clear explanations and helpful, specific information. All titles in the series include the phone numbers and web sites of all companies discussed. What you won't find are wordy explanations, tales of how someone did it better, or a scholarly lecture on the "theory". Think of them as "Cliff Notes TM" on the subject matter.

Every paragraph in each of the books are comprehensive, well researched, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read, yet are packed with interesting ideas. You'll be using your highlighter a lot! The best part aside from the content is they are very moderately priced. You can also purchase the whole 15 book series the isbn number is 0-910627-26-6. You are bound to get a great new idea to try on every page if not out of every paragraph. Do not be put off by the low price, these books really do deliver the critical information and eye opening ideas you need you to succeed without the fluff so commonly found in more expensive books on the subject. Highly recommended!
