The end of the second millenium is an appropriate moment to evaluate the legacy of one of the most vivid and controversial writings in the Christian canon, the Book of Revelation. The idea of an apocalypse that was both destructive and redemptive provided a rich vein of visual and literary imagery that remains a force in contemporary culture. This book examines the tradition as represented by illuminated manuscripts, books, prints, and drawings from the eleventh century up to the end of the Second World War, concentrating on particular episodes or apocalyptic phases, which have often occurred at the end of centuries and have always been rooted in historical and political circumstances.

The defining moment in the development of the pictorial tradition was D¦rer's great Apocalypse cycle, published in 1498. Apocalyptic imagery was quickly appropriated as a vehicle for propaganda and satire, becoming secularised at the hands of artists such as the late eighteenth-century satirist James Gillray. Gillray's contemporary William Blake evolved a concept of Apocalypse and Judgement that responded to the millenarian currents and revolutionary upheavals of his time.

A GENIUS OF ILLUSTRATION.......2005-07-11

I always considered myself more sophisticated than the average kid when it came to comics and comic book art. When I began reading comics in the early 1970's most other eleven and twelve year-olds were just reading comics for the characters but I always was captivated by superior artists since I was an aspiring artist myself. Guys like Neal Adams, Barry Smith, George Perez, Jim Starlin, Berni Wrightson...and Frank Brunner. Brunner, I always found to be the most enigmatic out of all of these artists because while the rest have remained active or semi-active in comics...Adams even had his own company for a time...Brunner seemed to virtually disappear from the comic book landscape after the 1970's.

With an introduction by Michael Moorcock, this book from Vanguard Productions features a glorious sampling of Brunner's art from the late 1960's through present day. Throughout, Brunner shares anecdotes about his career in comics and after comics and catches us up with what he is doing today. Much of this information was new to me such as Frank's initial desire to want to work in underground comics as opposed to mainstream books and his early days working for Warren Publications.

Like many, however, it was his work on Doctor Strange that first made me a Brunner Fan. Doc Strange has always had the benefit for having superior artists do to the unique milieus the book features. Guys like Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, Paul Smith...all talented but it was Brunner's vision of the Sorcerer Supreme that I will always remember. Great covers like Doctor Strange #1 and #4 still are among my favorites, as well as the memorable Howard the Duck #1. And then there are the stories with Death and, of course, GOD! Brunner relates an interesting story about that rather famous issue when Stan Lee told Brunner and writer Steve Englehart that they needed to print a retraction saying it wasn't THE God but rather A God! Their resolution is quite hilarious.

Like many great artists of the 1970's, Brunner doesn't hesitate to show his disdain for many of today's splash-page heavy, techno artists and the lifeless, unoriginal characters which permeate comics. I've heard similar comics from both Neal Adams and John Buscema. Eyes of light not only reprints a lot of his great comic art of the 1970's but also work from his classic portfolios like his modern take on Alice in Wonderland. There's also a lot of great new work, some commissions for classic Brunner renditions of Doctor Strange and Red Sonja.

Brunner covers much of what he did after leaving Marvel including his work in TV, film, and animation of projects such as Pirates of Dark Water, Dino Riders, Skeleton Warriors, Jonny Quest, Robocop, The Ed Grimly Show, and much more. It's truly a fascinating and intimate look at one of the legends of illustration and highly recommended. Like most of the books from Vanguard Productions the book is available in softcover, hardcover, and a limited edition hardcover signed by Frank Brunner!

Make Peace not War!.......2005-12-05

I can't believe there,s only been 2 Reviews on this book!Both are 5 Stars and it doesn't surprise me.For a backyard birdfeeder ,hunt as you may,it would be easier to win your battle with the squirrels,than to find a better book on the subject;and even if you did,it wouldn't compare with the enjoyment this book will give you.It was first published in 1997
and I see it is still commanding the original price.The reason for that is simple--it's worth it.Come to think of it,maybe the reason there have been only 2 Reviews to date is that of all the backyard feeders are too tired out from battling the squirrels or from all those maneouvers,their brains have turned to mush;and they can't retain a thought anymore to allow them to write it down.If that describes you,this book will become your Bible and you can become "Born Again" and learn how to enjoy the whole scene of birdfeeding;yes,and even get to enjoy the squirrels.You might as well;never mind winning the war,you haven't even won a battle,or even a skirmish yet--and to put it frankly,you're not likely to!
This book of 197 pages is jam-packed with everything you ever wanted to know,much which you have never even thought about,and maybe even stuff you don't even want to know.I believe we already established that,after all you're probably battle fatigued,if not downright shell-shocked.After reading this book ,and laughing all the way through it,you'll be walking around with such a big smile on your face,that everyone ,especially your family,will think you have finally 'lost it' (maybe the appropriate words is gone nuts)over the squirrels.With this book, you will finally have all the answers and your life with the birds and the squirrels,
(forget the bees,they don't even come into the discussion)other than that aspect of your life will probably improve with the reduction in your stress level.
I have been feeding the birds for many years and ran the whole gamut of feeders,seed types,pie-plate shields,spools on the wire,grease on the pole,slinkys (boy, did the squirrels love that till they learned the trick.One stretched it down while the other climbed up it).
Well we are all at peace now around here.Not only has the cease fire lasted a couple of years,maybe those guys in the Mid East should take notice,but I really believe the war is over.Not only did nobody lose;we're all winners.
I am not trying to one-up the author,but here,s where I finally ended up.
Since I can't make a sketch here;I'll try to describe my present feeding station.It is somewhat like you see on page 31.
It is free standing,about 25 feet from trees,bushes,wires and buildings.It consists of a 1 1/2inch steel pipe with about 9 feet above ground and bout 2 feet below ground in a PVC sleeve,so it can be easily removed.Similar to how lots of people instal a clothes drying rack.At the top of the pole is a "Tee" through wlich runs a 7 foot pipe (horizontal to the ground)I suspend my feeders from that pipe ,using wire type shower curtain hangers,secured in blace with tape,and left open to hang the feeders on.All fine and dandy,but what about our "Tree Rats"?
They would have no trouble climbing the pole except for the guard. It is similar to pg 31.I made it from a 30 inch long section of vent duct,9 inches in diameter held up by a cap of sheet metal.Also, this guard starts about 30 inches above the ground,extends up about 30 inches ,then there is pipe for about 30 inches to the top and the hanging bar.Across the top, I have a 7 or 8 foot branch taped horizontally for birds to land or perch on and that helps them from being picked off by accipiters.The squirrels accepted defeat and now feed on the ground with the doves; everybody's happy.I have never had a squirrel on the feeders since.The only drawbcck is the height of the hooks,but I keep a bench nearby for that.I know that if I were to lower the bar a couple of feet ,the war would start all over again.In other words,"If it ain't broke,don't fix it."If this is confusing e-mail me .
What a great book,if you feed birds you'll love it.If you know someone who does,I it would make a super gift.

A hilarious guide to birdfeeding for newcomers and veterans........1999-10-29

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I laughed until I cried. I worked in a bookstore and recommended this to anyone who asked about birdfeeding. I had to buy extra copies to give to my friends and parents.

Terrific book for bird lovers and squirrel haters.......1999-06-15

This is a terrific, and funny, little book. Visiting a friend, we found a copy in her bathroom. It's great bathroom reading -- one line, cartoon, or many. I love the cartoon showing a man in a hospital bed with his arms and legs in casts, with a squirrel looking in the window. The squirrel says, "it's only a game. Don't take it seriously."

I'm buying a copy for me, and two copies for friends.

Absolutely one of the best lateral-thinking puzzle books.......1998-08-02

"Mental Fitness Puzzles" really does offer a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been rather inbred for too long. The puzzles in this book are, for the most part, much better than those in similar books. For example, why would a man build a boat and then be happy when it sinks immediately? Why would another man watch someone steal his wallet and not raise a finger to object?

What really sets this book apart is that it is clear that there is independent thought and serious consideration behind the puzzles. While other books often include well-known but wrong puzzles, this one has intricately constructed puzzles. The problems are crafted to allow false assumptions, and red herrings are liberally construed, but the four authors clearly have played fairly. Most of the solutions are not only plausible but reasonable. (There are a few problematic puzzles, but they are the exceptions.)

For those who have not experienced "lateral thinking" puz! zles, they are short descriptions that seem to defy explanation (as in the questions in the first paragraph of this review). The goal is to find the explanation. These puzzles are often interactive, and most books require two people, one to read the solution and answer the other's questions. "Mental Fitness Puzzles" stands apart from its competition, though, in that the authors clearly have made this a book that one person can enjoy alone. Each problem has clues, but other books work that way, too. Here, though, the clues tend uniquely to indicate the authors' answer. That's a welcome feature. There's room for improvement, but overall, this book is a leap above the competition that I've seen and is well worth the cover price.
