An invaluable resource for any artist.......1999-07-05
The Artist's Survival Manual is just that. Any artist, beginning or long time professional can find something invaluable in this easy to follow clearly written manual. Subjects ranging from contracts to tax issues are approached in an informative straight forward manner not without some humorous observations to boot.Another aspect of this book is the way that Toby has thoughtfully acknowledged topics like creative blocks, and general morale for artists through the long haul. There are chapters with detailed information along with anecdotes from Toby's very experienced and succesful art business. A section with simple forms and contracts that can be used by the artist.A more than basic primer that covers the ins and outs of everything from galleries, group exibitions, and having an open studio,as well as basic sales ethics blending together making for a sharp informative read that leads to a better sense of what is going on in the art world, and how to approach it all with more confidence. I highly reccomend it.
This is a "must-have" book for every visual artist........1999-02-21
This is a "must-have" book for every visual artist involved in marketing his or her own artwork. All the important issues involved in marketing one's own artwork are dealt with in this book by Ms. Klayman, who has long been a visual artist herself as well as an expert on laws, contracts and royalties for visual artists and currently an instructor in an arts administration program at Golden Gate University. As an artist in San Francisco, I have used this book to educate myself about the various issues involved in marketing my own work.
Ms. Klayman guides us step-by-step through the often dreaded maze of dealing with copyright issues, pricing issues, commission issues, multiples as a way to enhance an artist's offerings and earnings, consignment arrangements, artist-gallery relationships, bookkeeping for tax purposes, avoiding problems with the IRS, to name a few. Potential pitfalls of all kinds are held up for our inspection and clear directions are given for their avoidance. A wealth of sample forms are included in the book (which can be used with written permission of the author)--Artist-Gallery Agreement, Resume, Consignment Receipt Form, Installment Sales Agreement, among others. Every artist needs to be ready with the tools presented in this book in order to be a successful business person-and these days every artist must be a successful business person as well as an artist in order to survive in the marketplace.
Klayman's book also delves into the complex personal situations every artist faces upon commitment to being an artist in society. Since most artists need a second job in order to survive financially as an artist (and many studies support this fact), there are some very specific dilemmas almost every artist faces related to balancing time and energy--these are discussed. Also explored are slumps, the importance of keeping in touch with one's collectors, the sometimes difficult relationships with other artists, definition of success, believing in one's own work, insurance issues and even writing a will.
Every artist entertaining the idea of selling work or in the midst of being represented by galleries and dealers or even just selling work in the studio NEEDS this book.

Product Description
Neither historically accurate nor politically correct, Fictoids is a random walk through cultural history from 1220 BC to 2004. A "fictoid" is a fictional factoid, making a statement or telling a story in one sentence. Featuring cover art and illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist Jack Ziegler, the book includes fictoids about music, movies, plays, books, sports, politics, business and other topics too random to mention.
Customer Reviews:
Funny fictional factoids.......2006-07-01
In the introduction, a fictoid is described as "...a bit of fictional history, maiking a statement or telling a story in one sentence." Fictoids are also witty and humorous, although some of them were over my head as I didn't understnand the reference. The ones I did get made me smile. Each page in this book is basically a one-liner, making it perfect for a lazy beach/pool reading if one doesn't want to concentrate too long on a novel or book. One I liked was: "In 1754, Philadelphia accountant and habitial procrastinator Joseh P. Fiscal had fallen six months behind in his work, and looking for a way to catch up, invented what is now known as the Fiscal Year."
comic relief.......2006-05-25
This book is great for laughing out loud and then deciding to figure out where lies the truth.
For Jollies!.......2005-06-05
What, you may ask, is a "fictoid?" Well, as author and fellow Okie Bill Dutcher explains, a fictoid is a fictional factoid, and Dutcher provides a delightful plethora of them in his fun book entitled (of course) FICTOIDS. As an example:
"Since 1994, commuters entering Manhattan in car pools have been required to use bridges instead of tunnels, due to rising health concerns over car pool tunnel syndrome."
Hey, that's funny, I don't care who you are! Dutcher gives us a history of fictoids, going all the way back to 1224 BC. Most are witty, a few rather lame, but all of them entertain. And Dutcher, a former journalist, can sure manipulate the English language with some outstanding adjectives (for example, "Pugnacious Palooka, the pusillanimous pugilist"), which makes the book a fun read in and of itself. FICTOIDS is guaranteed to prompt a smile or two, along with some well-deserved giggles.
--D. Mikels
Hilarious fictional facts.......2005-05-30
This is really funny. In a world overtaken by reality shows, fictoids is the revenge of fiction over facts. The book brings plausible and short explanations to the surrealism of the world surrounding us.
The Oklahoman gave this book a great review - I fully agree with them:

wonderful.......2007-09-09
very worth reading, even if you aren't much into Star Trek stuff.
Especially interesting for me was, of course, the struggle it was for a young talented black woman to get a space in a succesful TV show in the 60s. It seems astounding, from our perspective, that her story was so difficult, and that she almost wouldn't have remained in Star Trek at all without a chance encounter with none other than Martin Luther King.
If you are interested in civil rights and/or showbiz intrigue, you'll certainly love this. What a lady!
Interesting autobiography.......2005-11-28
This autobiography by Nichelle Nichols reflects upon her life, as a black actress, facing racism of her times and breaking them with certain amount of courage and skills. First half of the book retells the story of her life prior to Star Trek, her education, training and people whom she met, some who were helpful while others who were not. Her occasional slide into self praise is typical of many memoirs, not atypical.
But for most people who read this book, they read it because they are Star Trek fans and second part of the book don't disappointed them at all. She goes into all sort of interesting tales about her experiences in Star Trek that brought her to the forefront. Her story on how Martin Luther King talked her into staying on the show, her frustration with the limited role she was having and her relationships with her co-workers while still fighting occasional racism at the studios proves to be an set of very interesting and telling stories. She continued on with her stories on the Star Trek movies as well as her work with NASA.
Like Jimmy Doohan and George Takei books, Nichols seem to have problems with William Shatner. From the three of them, Shatner does not seem to be a very generous actor and by design or not, William Shatner often end up sounding like a self centered cad. Its interesting that almost every Star Trek actor have problems with Shatner. But she was generous enough to say that Shatner as a director of Star Trek V, was most wonderful person. Doohan and Takei had no kind words for Shatner in their books.
Intersting reading material for all Star Trek fans. Story of Nichelle Nichols proves to be one of courage and determination that marked her a very special woman. In some ways, that make the color of her skin immaterial in the end.
Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories.......2005-10-02
I really enjoyed this book. Nichelle tells lots of great stories. A couple of times it would get a little bogged down in details about all her various gigs, but for the most the book moved quickly. She begins with her multi-racial family living thru segregation. She goes on to tell stories about how her carreer evolved, her brush with gangsters running the entertainment industry, her relationship with Gene Roddenbery, how insensitive Bill Shatner was to his cast mates, and by contrast, how egalitarian Leonard Nimoy was, and about her work with NASA recruiting astronauts. There are many, many fascinating stories in this book.
Great book.......2002-12-10
I just came from reviewing Walter Koenig's book and I'd like to take the chance to review Nichelle's book. Nichelle's is the 2nd ST book I've read this week.
I liked Uhura on Star Trek, but after reading Nichelle's book I admire her even more. Nichelle is a brave woman and she had to put up with a bunch of [stuff] to get where she did. If you read her book, you'll see she met a few people that made racial comments to her and treated her badly because of her skin color. I don't know Nichelle, but I must say that I admire her bravery to put up with some of the stuff she had to put up with.
Let me move onto her Star Trek days. I was entertained by the chapters talking about Star Trek. Like Walter Koenig's book, she didn't really talk about the issues with William Shatner. She skimmed the surface, but then I reach the end of the book where Bill wants to interview her for his Star Trek Memories book. She did sound upset that William betrayed her trust, but she didn't spend the whole book dissing him. It's just my guess, but I get the feeling when I read James Doohan's book that's when I'll see the dissing start. I like every Star Trek cast member, including Bill Shatner and I'm still going to like every member whether or not Bill did have a chip on his shoulder.
Anyway, Nichelle's book is def. worth a read.
Where No Non-Secularist {i.e., CHRISTIAN} has gone before ??.......2002-10-07
Hi ... as if my Review Title isn't "controversial" enough. Might I first note, with sick fascination, the overwhelming majority of occasions on which We Of Varied "Colors" wildly [ and customarily, VIOLENTLY ] flail away at each other ? Ruefully, therefore, even when Gayle Sayer's beautiful autobiography, I Am Third, was *not* out-of-print, hardly ANYbody, Black -or- White, decided it worth the time to read, among other chapters, Gayle's summary of his friendship with Brian Piccolo entitled "Pick." As my segue into some brief remarks on Nichelle Nichols autobiography, Beyond Uhura, might I specify: look to a verse in the Beautiful Beatles song "A Day In The Life" wherein Paul McCartney, I believe, sings "The Crowd of People turned *away* ... BUT I just *had* to look ... having Read the book." That's what I think, and feel, about Ms. Nichols splendid autobiography. What a wonderful Lady, and how very gracious, talented, lovely (in AND out), non-bigoted, non-judgemental, and holy she is ! Her autobiography is an invaluable, indispensable read for we who vituperously segment ourselves into separate "Races" ( check out the Graham Nash song, if you will, titled "There's Only One" ) and stick hurtful, derogatory LABELS upon anyone but OURSELVES. Nichelle, like Gayle, simply tells us the TRUTH, and like Mr. Sayers, Nichelle relates Truth to us like the genuine, loving Christian she is !!

Book Description
Domino toppling champion Robert Speca offers winning strategies in a value priced gift and book set.
The “Domino Wizard” teaches you his magic for setting up elaborate designs and then toppling the whole array. And, because 112 dominoes (four complete sets) are packed right with the book, you’ll be able to start trying his tricks instantly. As every image clearly shows, dominoes are pure, undiluted build-’em-up and knock-’em-down fun. If you’re new to toppling dominoes, begin with simple straight lines to get some experience on how far apart to place the dominoes so they strike one another perfectly. As your skills increase, work with ramps or do other intermediate-level stunts, including the spiraled Ram’s Horns and complicated triple and super peel-offs. The advanced toppler can take a chance on truly complex domino acrobatic.
Customer Reviews:
How to frustrate a child.......2005-04-03
The book of this set is extremely interesting. Then my very patient grandchild attempted to set up the dominoes. He tried for more than an hour. The dominoes are so flimsy and weightless that they simply would not stand up and always fell over by themselves. The idea is excellent, but the dominoes are so inferior it is a crime to include such very poor quality. Sell the book separately. I tried to reach the author by his email, but is was no longer available. He is probably ashamed of his product.
Domino-Palooza.......2004-12-25
Hey it's Dr. Pepper again and I want to say that I think the book and the dominos are a great deal. I want to thank Mr. Speca for going into so much detail so I could share the knowlege with my three children. We all enjoy long hours of setting up and knocking down dominos with tricks such as the "Tarzan Swing."
decent book, disappointing dominoes.......2004-12-21
I thought I'd found a good deal with the book and 112 dominos set. The book is informative and a good beginner book, but the dominos included are cheap and too small to really do anything with. Nowhere on the box or ad does it say they are not real dominos. I was disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, some dated examples, frequent missing CD.......2005-07-23
I have enjoyed this book. In most cases I can skim the sections I know, skipping examples, and do well on the tests so it is very well structured. There are lots of excellent examples flushing out contents for the total newbie. A lot of thought went into the projects and case studies. If you are looking for a good overview of markting concepts and have a solid instructor to lead discussions about them, this is a great textbook.
That's the good.
The bad is that a number of examples are quite dated. For example, the book claims that Nintendo owns something like 82% of the video game market. How many years ago was this written and how would Sony and Mircrosoft respond? Intel's partnership with Gateway is mentioned in co-branding whereas the modern example would be Dell. Intel actually pays for 2/3 of Dell's advertising as part of the Intel Inside promotion.
Furthermore, the book makes no mention of Account Planning, and increasingly important field in advertising. One would think we still lived in 1992 when the Account Executive was asked to handle all strategic decicisions.
The book needs an overhaul in these ways but the essence is still very solid.
[...]
If you need to buy this textbook, buy it early, and make sure you get the CD. If you don't, send it back.
Robert the Advertising Planner.......2005-07-06
A good textbook for university students. For pro's, the book lacks a touch of ingeniuity.
