"The Beginner's Guide: Drawing;
A COMPLETE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS"

If you are like me, and wanted to learn to draw, you would read the words on the front cover and back cover and you might think this would be a very, very good and helpful book for a beginner to buy, if he or she wanted to learn to draw. But I must tell you, this is one of the greatest deceptions I have ever seen from a book publisher.
The words TECHNIQUE & MATERIALS for example. What this book is mostly about is drawing "MATERIALS", and very little, less than 10% about drawing "techniques". Sure, I admit, there is something in this 96 page book on "Hatching" & "Cross-Hatching". But that's about all there is on drawing "technique". For that matter, I think HATCHING & CROSSHATCHING are covered in about every drawing book ever printed.
All of that cover language about "STEP-BY-STEP" you can forget. It is not there. There may be "steps"; but only steps on in terms of different drawing mediums, and not the usual facets of drawing technique such as Figure Drawing, Landscape, Perspective. The majority of the text is a coverage of MATERIALS, all kinds of drawing materials, and the author would have you learning all of them at once, which is entirely impractical.
Remember, this book is about BEGINNERS. It claims also to be a "COMPLETE, STEP-BY-STEP....etc." and to teach TECHNIQUES. I cannot imagine any beginner, just learning how to draw, who needs to learn about all the variety of drawing mediums when starting out. Usually, it is suggested that a BEGINNER use pencil or charcoal. If this book were primarily about pencil or charcoal, and was thorough in drawing TECHNIQUE with either pencil or charcoal, it would make sense. It just does not make sense. I cannot recommend it.

Absolutely Breathtaking.......2001-03-18
This is a fantastic coffee table book. The photographer has captured so much color in each photograph, you almost expect some sort of visual explosion -- how can such a dynamically variegated palette be contained in a single picture?! The whitewashed cottages, the blue-green sea, the dun colored old castle walls... even the street signs are beautiful. I myself am half of Irish descent, and half of Italian descent. Although I must confess that in culinary terms, my Italian forebears had considerably more "on the ball" than my Irish ancestors, this book makes me appreciate some of the beauties that Ireland itself has to offer. It makes me determined to visit it at some point.
The book is divided into four parts. Each traditional ancient Irish kingdom has its own section -- Ulster, Leinster, Connacht, and Munster. Each section is also followed by a brief photographic essay, dealing with such topics as "Ancient Ireland," "Bar and Shop Fronts," and "Painted Villages." At the end, there is a useful map, a travellers guide complete with phone numbers and addresses of Inns and hostels, and a very handy little bibliography.
I would just like to also recommend, for anyone with an interest in Irish history, "The Atlas of Irish History" by Sean Duffy. It is out of print, but you should ask your local librarian if he or she can find it, using OCLC or inter-library loan. If, like me, you have Irish blood in you, you will be familiar with the feeling of being quite alienated from the broader sweep of European history prior to the settlement of America. I once looked in the index of an encyclopedia, and actually found more entries on Native Americans, who of course are considered to be a marginalized people, than I could find on the Irish. This book, and the atlas I recommended, can help remedy that situation, and "The Most Beautiful Villages of Ireland" can beautify any home. Two thunbs up -- check this one out.

This second volume of GTO elevates Eikichi Onizuka to the level of superhero as he breaks down the barriers between one of his students he taught during his training and her alienated parents and gives them hope for a better future. He's finally ready to get his first job as a teacher but a problem arises on the bus to his interview. As he is looking at a woman's [posterior] and thinks about grabbing her, some other pervert beats him to it, and ironically, Onizuka ends up defending her honor by delivering a nasty blow to his face. Onizuka comes to find out that the woman, Azusa Fuyutsuki, is interviewing at the same school as him and the person he hit is the prinicipal doing the hiring. Not a very auspicious start.
This second book was as good if not better than the first. The plot and characters become a little more deep as GTO must confront some more profound issues than just simply lusting after young girls. What really comes out in this volume is the sense of his goodness which lurks behind the posturing youth. We also find that his reason for teaching is transforming into that of helping the kids instead of sleeping with them. Great read.

The realistic character of a young turk turned teacher is amusing and different from other manga titles. The strong personality of Onizuka is balanced with his experience (zero) with girls. This book really gives an insight on the world of struggling independent film-makers. Following every compromise Sayles is forced to make between his creative ideas and the options that are actually feasible, one can realise the impact of every cent in the budget on every choice and consequentially on the finished film.
An well-written snapshot of independent film making.......1999-11-17
"Thinking in Pictures" is a very good guide to the processes involved in making movies. Sayles writes about the germination of the movie and then the myriad decisions and compromises and joys that went into realising it on screen. If you've ever wondered about the tensions between the creative and the logistic and financial, here's a book that lays out, with wit and detail, the ups and downs of an interesting small production. It's also relatively ego free.
"Matewan" was an interesting small film, but this book is a gem.

I thought this book was very effective in taking me on the journey that John Sayles took while making the movie Matewan. I love movies and was fascinated with this book. Other books of this kind that I have enjoyed are Robert Rodriguez's Rebel Without a Crew.

This guide is fairly useful, although there is a lot of info about factions that I never play. Just a personal preference. Otherwise, this book is useful, especially for strategies and tips on how to win the game.

I must say that I disagree entirely with others who have written a review for this strategy guide. I think that it's great that the author gave so much information on each civilization; that way you can become an expert in one area. His advise is great and it works, and he seems to know a lot about the game. I do, however, agree that he should have written more general tactics, but a lot of the general tactics he explains when writing about the civilizations. His walkthroughs for each campaign and scenario are fantastic and prescise, and if I were you I would buy this guide in an instant.
(By the way, I was about in the middle of between expert and novice when I bought this book.)
Skip this if you're not a rookie........2000-11-09
Well if you're looking for in-depth strategies you're in the wrong place, it only works if your manual is missing or something like that, this only gives the very basics of the game and if you're a semi-experienced then you already found out for yourself most of the "tips" in the book.
I give it 3 stars because the Mexican edition of the book (which I own) includes a CD-ROM with additional levels and AI files and many other utilities that will allow you to take more fun of the game.
A big disappointment.......2000-10-09
I am a rookie at AOK, so I thought this book might help me improve. I have played the game for only a couple of weeks and almost all the tips given here were things I had already learned in the course of playing the game. This book adds very little to the knowledge base of the manual and/or that which one obtains by playing a few campaigns. I felt it was a real waste of money.

More than anything, this book provides an applicable framework to deal with the great majority of succession scenarios in family businesses. I think the author's personal experience helps in providing real examples and makes the running example thougought the book believable. The most important contribution is the idea that there must be a separation of the emotional aspects from the business aspects and that all persons involved should have the maturity to understand and expect that that is the best way to deal with succession in family businesses.
