    Book Description

The Cambridge Companion to Delacroix serves as an introduction to one of the most important and most complex artists of the nineteenth century. Providing an overview of his life and career, this volume offers essays by leading authorities on the artist's pictorial practice, the stylistic range over classicism and Romanticism, his writings, both private diary notations and published articles, and his impact on modern aesthetics, among other topics. Designed to serve as an essential resource for students of French nineteenth-century art history, cultural history, and literature, The Cambridge Companion to Delacroix also provides a chronology of the artist's life, set into its political and cultural contexts, as well as a list of suggested further reading in the topic areas.

1 out of 5 stars Please do not buy this book.............2007-03-23

The book is a poorly researched pamphlet....not a book for beginners or professionals....not enough details or smart explanations.....it is suppose to get you with a catchy title, but this is not a cooking book...not a funny comparison at all....please do not waste your money....

3 out of 5 stars Not a good beginners book.......2007-01-19

This book needs diagrams. Some of the examples are only for the very knowledgeable. There are better books dealing with lighting

        4 out of 5 stars Great - but should've been greater..........2006-08-06

The book delivers: detailed info on lighting (and styling, propping) setups. The diagrams were frustrating because they lack important details. Although they show, e.g., the height of lights, they are vague about whether measuring to the center of the light, and whether a rectangular light is oriented vertically, horizontally, and whether it is tilted. A more important drawback is that the diagrams don't show the measurements from light(s) to model, a vitally-important factor.

The photos are nice, and professional quality. Most of the models and photos are attractive. Too large a propertion of the face shots have bizarre makeup, though.

Suggestions: Provide careful and COMPLETE measurement info in diagrams; stick to people, drop the products/still life; cut down on the extreme makeup.

All told, well worth having. If not for the astonishing lack of detailed measurement info, it would have got 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, but probably misnamed.......2006-06-25

This isn't really a "cookbook" in the sense of being a book that provides set "recipies" to use over and over again in various situations. Rather, it's a series of case studies, showing how the photograhper tackled a variety of different subject and situations. A thoughtful reader can examine the cases and derive useful lessons about different approaches and pieces of equipment, but it's a lot like business, law or any other subject taught by the case method: you're going to have to go out and experiment with it quite a bit yourself before you're really good. If you're looking for an instruction manual, this isn't it.

The photographer doesn't refer to particular camera equipment very much throughout the book. With the exception of some product and other still-life type shots that require the controls of a view camera, the subject rarely comes up. Hate to break it to you, but even in the digital world, these types of shots still require that expensive studio equipment even though it might have a digital sensor on it these days rather than a sheet of film. The same is true of the other equipment described. It's the lighting equipment that most pros are using today and for better or worse having access to at least some of it is the "entry ticket" for any kind of serious lighting work.

Where I fault this book is not discussing the pros and cons of various types of equipment, for example softboxes vs. umbrellas vs other diffusers. In addition, there isn't a lot of talk about how to make things managable on location when lugging multiple cases of equipment isn't an option and use of small portable units (like Vivitar 283s in umbrellas) is the best you're likely to be able to do. The latter type of discussion might have been useful to photographers who want to get started with inexpensive equipment as well.

All in all, not a bad read, but not for the beginner either.

4 out of 5 stars Neat Concept, Well Executed.......2005-11-21

I know people that swear by this book, as the be all, do all of studio lighting.

Personally, I think that it's very good, but not as good as the Ketchum and Dantzig books. Still worth a spot of your photographic bookshelf.

What I like about the book:

        1. The use of 'recipes' for a given shoot... a neat concept, well executed. This book clearly aims at replication, and succeeds.

        2. Great lighting setup diagrams. Not enough, but excellent ones when they appear.

        3. Only about 20 pages of filler at the start of the book (in the form of a definition of terms). The rest of the book is valuable.

        4. Stays on topic (THANK YOU)... covers lighting recipes for Glamour, Portrait, Still Life and Corporate photos.

Not much to dislike about this book, but here's a few:

        1. Over-hyped. You'll meet people who can't understand how you can be a photographer without this book. It's good, but not that good.

        2. Too few diagrams. Is this hard people? One lighting diagram for each image. Work with me here.

        3. Readability. Bidner doesn't read in a snoozer fashion, but you won't read this one for fun, either.

All in all, you'll want this book. Just not as the first book you buy on the subject of lighting.

5 out of 5 stars After Bathing At Baxter's.......2005-01-14

British humor at its best. If you enjoyed Monty Python's absurdity or the wild inventions of Peter Cook, you will relish the crazy captions Glen Baxter assigns to his beautifully drawn pictures. The pictures themselves are gorgeous. Baxter's imaginative sense of pastel and his daring use of color and light makes for a certain grandeur of design, and then on top of it is all the humorous, verbal play. Those who cherish the SYLVIE AND BRUNO books of Lewis Carroll will enjoy these cartoons too.

In the US we have no one exactly like Baxter, though I suppose the work of the eminent NY poet Kenward Elmslie resembles it to some degree, in their deconstructive deployment of the innumerable silly tropes embedded in a vicious society. A typical caption reads '"As junior partner you;'ll be expected to work in here," explained Hopkins' and then the picture shows Hopkins pointing inside the absurdly large waistline of his own pants. As Baxter's trademark handsome cowboys, cricketers, sailors, gangsters and Mounties cavort in between the follies of youth and the rituals of age, we realize he is an artist, like Rembrandt, who just gets better with age. TRUNDLING GRUNTS may not be the best of his books, but it's right up there.

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.

Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

5 out of 5 stars Maggie and Hopey together again.......2004-07-04

This probably isn't the best place to start reading Love and Rockets, since it directly follows the events of Death of Speedy but otherwise, there's a lot to like in Flies on the Ceiling. A lot of details are filled in about many of the characters' lives. Flies on the Ceiling includes an account of Izzy's time in Mexico, which I thought was really well done. And also a brief "origin story" of Terry Downe. Those two were some of my favorites. The main body of the collection though is about Maggie and Hopey's reunion. After Hopey left to go on tour with her band, Maggie had no idea where she was. In the course of the story we also an account of what happened to Hopey after we last saw her in Death of Speedy. It's really amazing how Jaime Hernandez can put so much into a few panels, so that years or even decades of a person's life can be summed up in a few pages, but all the same you feel like you got a rich and satisfying story.

          ASIN: 0809325632

          Book Description

Film critic David Sterritt’s Screening the Beats: Media Culture and the Beat Sensibility showcases the social and aesthetic viewpoints of lynchpin Beat writers Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg, juxtaposing their artistry with 1950s culture and achieving what Kerouac might have called a “bookmovie” riff. In clear prose, Sterritt captures the raw energy of the Beats and joins in their celebration of aesthetic freakishness. Tapping into the diversified spirit of the Beat Generation and its nuanced relationship with postwar American culture, Sterritt considers how the Beats variously foreground, challenge, and illuminate major issues in Hollywood and avant-garde film, critical and cultural theory, and music in the mass-media age.

Sterritt engages the creative and spiritual facets of the Beats, emulating their desire to evoke ephemeral aspects of human existence. Dealing with both high and low cultures as well as various subcultures, he highlights the complementary contributions to cultural creativity made by these authors. Screening the Beats grapples with paradoxes in Beat writing, in particular the conflict between spiritual purity and secular connectedness, which often materialized in the beatific bebop spontaneity, Zen-like transcendentalism, and plain hipster smarts that characterized the writings of Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg.

This interdisciplinary study tackles such topics as Ginsberg’s and Kerouac’s uses of racial and ethnic stereotypes prevalent in the popular movies of the 1950s era; the uses and limitations of improvisation as a creative tool in literature, jazz, and film; Kerouac’s use of cinematic metaphor to evoke Buddhist concepts; and intersections of the grotesque and carnivalesque in works as seemingly diverse as autobiographical novels by Kerouac, a radio play by Antonin Artaud, cultural theories of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, and the boisterous lunacy of Three Stooges farce. Deftly threading literary, musical, and cinematic works with a colorful array of critical theories, Screening the Beats illuminates the relationship between American culture and the imaginative forces of the Beat Generation.

          Book Description

In 1966, Neil Young drove a battered funeral car two thousand miles from his native Toronto to Los Angeles to seek his fortune in the music business. Nearly forty years of continuous writing and performing later, he is firmly established as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer-songwriters of his generation. His restless and innovative spirit ensures that he is one of the few rock veterans as vital in his old age as he was in his youth. Simmons provides fresh insights into Young's life so far. She also uncovers new facts about his friendship with Charles Manson, and closely examines his schizophrenic eighties output and musical return to form as the "Godfather of Grunge" in the nineties.

4 out of 5 stars whats the beef.......2003-12-20

I just don't get what some of these complaints are about this book. Yeah it's short but how I understand it is it was meant to be short - an introduction to Neil Young. And that was exactly what I was looking for. I've only just started getting into the man (yeah, I know!) and I didn't want to plough through 600 pages, but this really gave me a lot of insights into his character and his life and made me want to read further. Now I'm going to buy Jimmy macDonoughs book. But if you want something to the point and well written I would recommend this

          2 out of 5 stars Slight........2003-11-13

After reading this biography, I've no more insight than I would from reading cd liners. Very little insight into the characters in his life; nothing more than say CS&N's large egos. No interviews from on the scene characters, old band mates for ex. This book does not do justice to its subject.

          1 out of 5 stars WHAT??.......2003-08-28

I was very excited to get started on this book but about 15 pages into it, it states that Neil was at Woodstock and mentions CSN as "sidekicks". It was very wrong. I was truly dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Small but perfectly Formed.......2002-10-01

I'll lay my cards on the table, I am what is commonly called a Neil Young obsessive so I wouldve been driven to buy the book whatever it was like. So no surprise I have a library full of, how shall I put this politely, mouse food. When I bought Sylvie Simmons' book on Neil Young I was a bit disappointed on first viewing to see that it wasn't very long - I've always loved her writing in MOJO magazine, especially of course when she's written about Neil Young, so I would have loved something the length of the Jimmy McDounough book (which I also bought). But do you know what? She packed more information and real insight into that short space than McDounough did into his huge tome (and actually I liked that too). So I'd say to any Neil Young fan, check Miss Simmons' book out, you won't be disappointed

3 out of 5 stars Good questions but provide no answers.......2007-09-12

The book provides thought provoking questions for kids but answers are not provided in the book. Although I know the right answers I don't the right way to explain it to my kid. Its very important for kids to understand what makes the correct answer "correct". The book is more useful for teachers, but its rather incomplete for parents like me.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for all ages.......2007-09-11

We have children ranging from 6-11 who all love this book. It has become part of our dinner ritual to choose a story and take turns responding to the ethical challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Kids and parents will love this book.......2000-07-17

This book is such a wonderful way to open up dialogue with yourchildren. They love to tell you what they would do and you get theopportunity to share your values at the same time. I really think this is a wonderful way to talk to your kids about peer pressure and right and wrong so they are prepared to make good decisions when the challenges actually arrive. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to help teach children decision making........1999-10-10

I really enjoyed this book. There is no right, nor wrong answer. The situations that the child needs to made a decision about, are real life, and believable. I have reccomended this book to all of my teacher friends. Thank you Ms. Humphrey

            Book Description

How important is winning, and does it really matter how we win? What do you think determines a person's "worth" -- how much money he or she has? Can you have lots of friends and still be lonely? When other people are telling you what to do, how do you decide what is right for you?

In this sequel to her popular first book, IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?, psychologist Sandra McLeod Humphrey encourages parents and teachers to talk to children about values and to help them formulate their own personal value system in the face of peer pressure, even when following their own conscience means going it alone. Children can easily identify with the twenty-six scenarios presented, and the questions at the end of each chapter encourage productive, in-depth discussions about the moral choices suggested by each story. Kids will enjoy reading through each short situation and then deciding what they would do.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Material!.......2002-03-13

I must admit, I have read several of these "What would you do?" books, by far..this is the BEST.

Literally, I have had friends over and it supplied hours of in depth coversations, jokes and teases. Individually, it's also a great piece to read and ponder how you would react in these situations. This book really lets you step out of your normal everyday life and throws you in a category that can and will completely throw you off guard.

I definately recommend this book to anyone who is curious to buying it. It is well worth the money.

            5 out of 5 stars Totally original.......2001-10-16

This book is the coolest! I figured there'd be a few situations that would stump me, but the more I read, the more surprised I was, and not just me, my friends too. Some of the examples are easier to solve than others, but there were many that no matter who I asked, there'd be a different answer. And a few had us howling with laughter. This is a fantastic book to take to parties or nail your family with... make them try to 'solve' these wild dilemmas, because although each and every one could happen to you in real life, it's MUCH more fun to think about them in the imagination!

5 out of 5 stars definitely recommend it.......2001-08-26

I bought this book on a whim and haven't been able to put it down since! Fantastic situations to think about...two nights ago at a party everyone ended up playing for hours. I am definitely taking it with me on vacation.

5 out of 5 stars fun and thought-provoking!.......2001-08-05

I strongly recommend this book...it was not only a fascinating read, but i found it a fun game to play with friends and family. surprising revelations all round...

5 out of 5 stars How Should You Handle Awkward Moments?.......2001-07-10

If you like to think about challenging moments, this book will give you lots to think about. Although the book asks you what you would do, probably greater value will come from asking how you can gracefully deal with these situations. If you are like me, you will be left speechless by some of these circumstances. By discussing them with friends and family, you can probably find inventive, comfortable ways to respond that will make life more delightful.

What most of the situations have in common is that you are hit with something unexpected and for which you have limited successful experience. Here are some examples:

"You suspect that your neighbors physically abuse their children."

"On the eve of your wedding day, your husband's best man dies."

"You see someone shoplifting in a small local shop."

"A drunk driver pulls into your gas station and slurs, 'Fill her up!'"

"Your son decides to marry someone you can't stand to be in the same room with."

Clearly, some action is required in each situation. Taking the wrong action, however, can make the situation worse. What should a caring person do?

The dilemmas involve situations with lottery tickets purchased for others, getting negative information about fiancees, splitting checks in restaurants, borrowing money and goods, breaking things, new information about family and friends, sexual dysfunctions, annoying habits, being cheated, finding money, offensive acts or remarks by others, intimacy, knowing dangerous secrets, sperm donors, lying, putting a price on ethics, being HIV positive, being asked for false alibis, religious conficts, and affairs.

A book like this cannot do everything, but one nice feature is that many issues are tested by degrees. You find out if you feel differently about a situation based on how well you know the people, for example.

Another way you can use this book is to pull it out from time to time to see how your answers change. If you have written down your responses the first time, that will make it easier.

When you have finished your first reading and consideration of the book, I suggest that you outline other dilemmas and awkward situations that you find even more difficult than the ones in the book. Then, pursue those issues as well with people you respect and care about. If you have a spiritual or religious advisor, you may enjoy understanding what the teachings are from those perspectives, as well.

Be prepared . . . to be compassionate, considerate, and responsive in the most humane traditions . . . by thinking and talking things through in advance!
