              Book Description

This book combines breathtaking aerial photographs and exquisite map-drawings of the American landscape with thoughtful essays that explore how various cultures have forged the landscapes in different regions of the country and what the possibilities are for future landscape design. The authors demonstrate that landscape representation is more than descriptive-it can also instruct and construct how people perceive, shape, and transform the land.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2003-05-08

This book is incredible, the essays, photography, map drawings and descriptions really changed the way I looked at the world around me. This book was used as our text book for a Senior Project class in design school.

5 out of 5 stars You've never seen anything like this.......2002-06-13

This book will change the way you look at and think about landscape. Technically, it's a landscape architecture book, and the essays that deal with that subject are excellent. James Corner is one of the best landscape architects/theorists around, and his writing is though-provoking, lucid and enjoyable to read. He draws an wonderful comparison between this work and Le Corbusier's sightseeing flights over North Africa in the 1930's. But without a doubt, the reason to buy this book are the photographs that document the unexpected beauty that arises out of the interaction between man and nature. The incongruities of landscape, juxtaposed against the linear certainty of the Land Ordinance Act grid, farm plots and other common interventions make for stunning photography.

There are also little subplots, such as creative reuses of already built spaces (tennis courts as parking lots & football field yard lines over a baseball diamond), and the similarity of totally unrelated natural forms (who knew that from 7,000 feet, cracked pond ice looks like microscopic images of streptococcal bacteria?).

There are dozens of other little thoughts I could include, and one of most remarkable things about this book is that the photogrpahs allow the reader to draw on his or her own knowledge to make connections and interpertations. There's no right or wrong way to see these things, which makes it universally rewarding and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent graphic representation of landscape documentation.......2002-03-10

I always enjoy graphic design, but this one integrates intelligent visual graphic representation and it portraits site/landscape analysis.
Not your usual blueprint survey, but delightful new way of documentation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all.......1999-01-29

Perceptive and conciousness raising while an aesthetic visual pleasure. An unforgettable book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful. Combines geography, mathematics, aesthetics.......1999-01-16

This is one of the nicest Christmas gifts I ever received. Two guys flew across the United States at low level taking wonderful photographs, many of which are worth framing as art. A geographer's reflection and insights on the frames draw attention to the cultural impact on the landscape of U.S. history, its varied immigrants, the rectangular land survey, and of the Western mathematics embedded in their choices.

No math teacher looking for an exciting resource that supports cross-disciplinary work would find this book except by accident. Nor would those who fly in small planes and want high quality, thoughtful, intellectual books that go beyond coffee-table glamour and reflect in a serious way about the earth beneath. Nor would somebody interested in cultural geography. This is because the cataloging-in-publication information is generic and unimaginative.

                      Book Description

For years Tim Kreider's cartoons, as collected in 2004's The Pain: When Will It End?, were single-panel non sequiturs in the tradition of B. Kliban, about the squalor and ridiculousness of the human condition. But after the takeover by the Bush-Cheney regime and the War on Terror, he focused his bitter humor on more timely issues. His political cartoons have been, in the words of Ted Rall (not known as a sentimental softie), "among the most viscerally anti-Bush work around." As reality has become ever more nightmarish, Kreider's been driven to push the outer limits of humor to parody it. In this collection you will find: Cynical, astute, blackly hilarious, and deeply biased, these cartoons are neither the superficial, obvious jibes that appear in your daily paper's editorial section nor the didactic left-wing rants syndicated in your local alternative weekly; they are the artistic equivalent of hollow-point bullets fired from a high-powered rifle with a laser sight directly into the brain of the Bush administration.

as a Brit, and not an American, may i simply, with classic British understatement, say that I consider Tim Kreider to be like William Blake, Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks and Noam Chomsky - only better. Everyone I know is getting this book off me for Xmas.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite political cartoonist.......2005-08-11

I am amazed this collection doesn't have like 200 reviews praising it... and likewise 200 from right-wingers and other fundamentalists trashing it... this is an amazing collection. Most spreads have the cartoon on the right page, with the author's commentary on the left... tells you when it was drawn, where he got the ideas, and more detail into the ideas. Or, sometimes he's just being bloody funny.. and this guy is!

Like Rall, Tomorrow, Fisgon, Crumb? You'll love Kreider's take on our current troubled times.

                          Book Description

Synthesizing recent research on emotion in cognitive psychology and neurology, this study provides a more nuanced understanding of how film evokes emotion. Although the experience of emotion is central to movie-viewing, film studies have not focused on the emotions, relying instead on vague psychoanalytic concepts of desire. This volume describes a grounded approach to analyzing the emotional appeal of a wide variety of films (from Casablanca to Stranger than Paradise, from Renoir to Spielberg), showing how style and narration call upon the viewer's emotion system.

Films evoke broad moods and cue particular emotions that can be broadly shared as well as individually experienced. Although the experience of emotion is central to the viewing of movies, film studies have neglected to focus attention on the emotions, relying instead on vague psychoanalytic concepts of desire. Film Structure and the Emotion System synthesizes recent research on emotion in cognitive psychology and neurology in an effort to provide a more nuanced understanding of how film evokes emotion. Analyzing a variety and range of films, including Casablanca and Stranger than Paradise, this book offers a grounded approach to the mechanisms through which films appeal to the human emotions, demonstrating the role of style and narration in this process.

                            Book Description

This book analyzes the lifelong impact of Beethoven's music on Wagner and its importance for his conception of music drama. Kropfinger charts and scrutinizes Wagner's early responses to the composer and considers his experience as a conductor of Beethoven's music. A discussion of the Romantic "Beethoven image" leads to a careful study of Wagner's aesthetic writings, including his "programmatic explanations," the text "Concerning Franz Liszt's symphonic poems," and his Beethoven centenary essay. The penultimate chapter addresses Wagner's theory and practice of music drama, which he came to regard as the preordained successor to the Beethoven symphony. By analyzing special terms--such as "Leitmotiv"--Wagner's structural view of musical drama comes to the fore; it is a view that deepens not only our understanding of musical drama as a "hybrid" genre of art but also of purely musical structure and forms that Wagner sought to outdo.

                            Book Description

Every general account of the development of Chinese thought makes mention of Tung Chung-shu (195-105 BCE) as one of the pivotal philosophers of the Han. His Luxuriant Gems of the Spring and Autumn established the first state-sponsored Confucian orthodoxy, and created a view of the ruler and his role in government that was focal in political discussion for two thousand years. The author has carefully scrutinized this text for authenticity, and her book represents the most systematic account yet of Tung Chung-shu's importance in Chinese philosophy and religion.

Professor Queen's informative treatise on the hermaneutics of the Confucian Spring and Autumn is a relatively concise text, though the level of language and jargon is very high. Useful as a text or a resource for research.

                              Book Description

The Rite of Spring is Stravinsky's most revolutionary work. This comprehensive guide tells in vivid detail the story of its inception and composition, of the stormy rehearsals that led to the scandalous premiere in 1913, and of Stravinsky's later betrayal of the ballet's first choreographer, Nijinsky. Peter Hill probes beneath the surface of the music to reveal an architectural conception of unsuspected guile and subtlety. He provides a detailed discussion of the work in performance and a hard-hitting conclusion, which poses a radical challenge to the orthodox view of the work.

                              Book Description

The Cambridge Springs is a popular defence to the Queen's Gambit that takes its name from the famous tournament in 1904 during which it was tested in a number of games. Since then it has become firmly established as a club-player's favourite, since Black sets a number of traps and can generate a very quick initiative if White fails to respond precisely. Several world champions have used the Cambridge Springs, most notably Alekhine and Smyslov, while Kasparov has played it on occasion, including a sensationally quick victory over Karpov in 1985. It currently has a good theoretical reputation and is frequently played at grandmaster level.

This is the first major work on the Cambridge Springs. The authors combine thorough research with a wealth of original material to offer comprehensive coverage of this combative system. While the main body of the book covers both sides of the Cambridge Springs, it also offers Black a repertoire against White's alternative options in the Queen's Gambit, the most important of which is the Exchange Variation.

5 out of 5 stars objective coverage of an interesting opening for black.......2005-03-13

There is very little literature on the solid and yet trappy Cambridge Springs variation, a defense for black to the popular Queens Gambit. As a result of this book I have adopted the opening as black in some of my games, and have found my opponents are frequently surprised. As a bonus, there are some nasty pitfalls that white can fall for. During the 1985 world championship Kasparov sprang the Cambridge Springs on Karpov, and won in 32 moves.
Considering there is no other decent coverage of the opening (apart from encylopedias) it is fortunate that, in this case, the authors have written such an objective and comprehensive account. OK, it is written deliberately from black's point of view, as an opening repertoire book. But the assessments, as far as I can tell, are honest, and there is a refreshing amount of original analysis. It is also nice to see that care has been taken, to cater for any different move orders that white might try in the opening. Chapters 10 and 11 give a system for black if white tries to avoid the variation completely.
If you want an opening that is sound, but still could catch opponents on the wrong foot, then this is the book for you.

                                Book Description

In this survey of the development of reformist ideas among the Czech intelligentsia from 1956 to 1967, Dr Kusin presents an intellectual pre-history of the Prague Spring of 1968. He believes that incongruity between the political, social, economic and cultural organization imposed on Czechoslovakia after 1948 and the national disposition of the people was at the root of reformist thinking. The desirability of change gradually found expression in the formulation of a national aim to make the system more democratic, humane and even in a sense ‘pluralistic’, while preserving its socialist character. The author’s emphasis is on the growing influence of the ‘unofficial’ intellectual groups and their impact on the political structure of the day. The book is unusual in putting at least as much emphasis on reformist ideas in the fields of law, philosophy, culture, history and political science as on revisionism in economic organization.

Cambridge Mathematics Direct provides everything needed to plan, teach and assess primary mathematics, in line with the recommendations of the National Numeracy Strategy. The National Numeracy Strategy and Early Learning Goals state clearly that for much of the Reception year a 45 minute daily maths lesson may be inappropriate. However, pupils do still need to be exposed to oral/mental activities, direct teaching, pupil activities in groups, pairs or as individuals and a plenary. In CMD we have addressed these issues, and also tried to ensure that differentiation and progression take place. The Autumn/Spring Teacher's Handbook allows for flexible organisation. A starter lesson for each week is followed by follow-up sections to dip into. The teacher can identify and use the most appropriate activities for the class. All mathematical strands are covered, with problem solving integrated throughout. Ideas for using maths displays, number rhymes and stories, and the environment are provided.

"Bill Bernstein has given us a compact and immensely readable economic, political, military, and institutional history of our civilization that is a tour de force. Put everything else down. Take a deep breath. Open The Birth of Plenty. And prepare to be amazed.

--John C. Bogle, Founder and Former CEO, The Vanguard Group

"The Birth of Plenty is a brilliantly written, whirlwind account of how the modern world was formed. It is a hugely enjoyable read, full of vigor and liveliness, and a book every American should possess--at least those who treasure our abundant life and care about our future."

--William Schultheis, Author, The Coffeehouse Investor

"Put simply, this is my favorite economic history book. It gathers what is interesting about economic history to draw important lessons."
--Ed Tower, Professor of Economics, Duke University

"William Bernstein scrutinizes the research literature, distills it with originality and insight, then shares the results with classic Bernstein clarity and wit. Ideologues on both political wings should prepare to have their assumptions challenged."

--Bernard Sherman, Host, Talk of Iowa - Focus on Finance radio show

A daring look at the development of human prosperity--how it was created, and where it's headed

In the breakthrough spirit of Against the Gods, William Bernstein's The Birth of Plenty has the topical uniqueness and storytelling panache to literally create its own category and reader. Based upon the premise that mankind experienced virtually zero economic growth from the dawn of time until 1820, this provocative, bigpicture book identifies the four conditions necessary for sustained economic progress--property rights, scientific rationalism, capital markets, and communications and transportation technology-- and then analyzes their gradual appearance and impact throughout every corner of the globe. Filled with bestselling author William Bernstein's trademark meticulous research and page-turning writing style, The Birth of Plenty explores:

Rare is the book that proposes an entirely new premise, validates that premise with inarguable research and analysis, and then explains beyond question both the relevance and the implications of its premise to the reader and the world at large. The Birth of Plenty is just such a book. From its unique, topical subject matter to its tremendous review potential, this insightful book will be one of the most talked-about volumes of the publishing season.

I had this book on the shelf for almost a year before reading it. What a mistake to wait! William Bernstein, a noted financial writer (and physician) describes the economic history and factors that made our world so wealthy in just the last two centuries. Highly readable history and economics all wrapped together. Excellent!

A wonderful overview of what factors needed to be in place for countries to develop strong economic growth that benefited the majority of their populations.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting overwiew of world economic history!.......2006-10-26

Considering that the author is not an economist, this book is an excellent concise history of the global economy. The author attempts to give viable explanations as to why the first world indeed prospered and why the third world has not done as well economically.

While the book focuses exclusively on several factors that are worth mentioning, the book almost exclusively ignores current geopolitical realities between the relationship among first and third world countries. There is much truth to the fact that while first world countries became wealthy on their own historical accord, many third world nations have been manipulated and coerced into unfavorable positions (sometimes trade pacts) which gives tremendous advantages to first world countries at the expense of third world countries.

For example, as an economist I am very well aware that most third world countries have the greatest advantage in agriculture and in fact, many third world countries would prosper if they were to be engaged in free trade of agricultural products. However, heavy subsidies on first world agriculture not only helps protect first world farm enterprises at the expense of third world farmers, but it also helps support overproduction of foodstuff which are effectively dumped on international markets, depressing the global price of farm products making them too cheap for third world countries to take full advantage of. In other words, many first world countries are condeming the most efficient and best wealth producing sector of the economy of third world countries by protecting their domestic first world markets and dumping excesses on the international scene.

The author gives a very well thought out theory as to why some countries prospered and why others have not and as to why has so much wealth been created in the world in the more modern years. However, it effectively avoids discussion of important modern tactics being imposed by first world governments which directly hinders the economic prospects of many third world countries and in fact, threatens the idea of third world countries ever truly prospering to become truly wealthy, first world countries.

I really enjoyed this book. Poor Bernstein was so passionate about this subject you could tell he was trying to cram as many facts as he could into this book. I highly recommend this book.

Very readable. One of the best economic histories I've read. Very insighful a must read for those who want to know why some nations prosper and others fail.
