disappointed.......2007-05-30
As a long time fan of this Lady, I was just very disappointed in her cynicism. For an actress who was so powerful and wonderful on the screen, it distressed me to read so much dessension in her book. She certainly is opinionated and that's good, but disparaging of fellow actors, I believe makes her seem simply petty. I have to say, she admitted to things that would make her unpopular, but she deserves credit for being brave enough to expose her foibles. Also, because the writer is not objective, we're missing information, such as; the details of the filming process. While she may have taken the process lightly, we the reader didn't get the opportunity to enjoy her view on the filming of her movies. Personally, I would loved to have read some behind the scenes documentation of my favorite film of all time, "The Best Years of Our Lives" That movie will always stand alone. It captures the post war era better than any film ever. And like the writer, I wished she had continued acting. Finally, just as Angela Lansbury, Virginia would have been fabulous to watch later in life.
A great book!.......2003-02-09
This is a wonderful auto-biography, that Virginia Mayo has written. She tells about her life on Hollyood and at home with her family. She tells about her beloved husband, Michael O'Shea, who passed away. Also about her daughter Mary whom she adores, and who feels the same way about her mom.
The work as well as the rewards and joys of working in Hollywood during the Golden years. Also her book contains many wonderful photos of her. Such a large and generous selection of them. I am a big fan of hers, and she is a beautiful and talented actress. She is also very kind and gracious and has written an enjoyable and delightful book. I very highly recommend it to anyone. Also Virginia provides insight into other Hollywood stars and what they were like to work with, and the ones that she got to meet. Very informative and interesting. She is truly a lovely and kind lady.

When American kids of a certain vintage--Bill Clinton, for example, but not Bob Dole--put down their childish things, they picked up MAD magazine. It didn't leave their hands until adulthood hit, and maybe after. The magazine ain't what it used to be, so it's easy to forget how keen it once was. MAD About the Sixties is a long-overdue collection of material from that seminal humor magazine's salad days. It's a welcome reminder that when MAD was good, it was very, very good: it featured solid writing coupled with great art, month after month. The movie and television parodies ("Bats-Man," "Star Blech") are sure to be a hit, whether you saw the originals the first time around or as reruns. While it helps to have lived through the era--particularly for the ad parodies--there's enough generic daffiness in MAD About the Sixties to satisfy the reader who never saw Wings, much less Paul McCartney's other band.

Laughing is healthy.......2006-12-01
You would like this edition.A friend of mine came from the States and lent me only once, but I must own it to read through it again.I like Mad magazines since I was a kid.To me a person should be a little mad or
funny. But also be intelligent at the same time.
Unfortunately, there are people who are only mad.
A History text of a decade, with a few boffo laughs.......2006-03-26
Great for us Baby Boomers. Younger readers will know the Beatles, but what will they make of "Nikita Kruschev" (who seems to be in more stories than anyone else), or "Cassius Clay", or Joey Bishop? If you are a baby boomer you will enjoy running barefoot through all the nostalgia, scatteringflowers and babana peels (there's even a joke about smoking them!). If you are a BB's parent you will be able to say "I told you so". But younger readers whoare not History buffs will probably start fairly quickly skipping pages to find Don Martin and Spy vs Spy.
Humorous Summary Of The Decade.......2000-07-17
This book, which is a collection of things compiled from Mad Magazine, is funny summary of the decade. Mad About The 60's covers many of the most popular movies and tv shows from the 60's with their usual style of parody. This book also features many of the funniest cartoons that would appear monthly in the magazine such as Dave Berg, Don Martin, ect. Many of the featured elements of this book have a lot to do with the attitude, politics, and lifestyle of the 60's. For a Mad Magazine fan this book is a nice buy.
This is an OK book........1999-10-11
What can one say about mad magazine? I've been reading for a long time. Even though I wasn't alive in the sixties, this book portrays them fairly well. Aside from Mad About The Seventies, this currently tops the Mad Magazine Humor list. With parodies of Gilbert and Sullivan, My Fair Lady, and Lawerence of arabia, this is a must read. My favriote section was in the late sixties. Overall, Superb.
A great addition to lovers of Mad Magazine.......1998-03-22
Anyone who has been following Mad, will really enjoy this book. It is a bit difficult to read like a novel. But, you keep coming back to it and each section keeps you smiling away.

Book Description
For thousands of years, people have been planning attacks, captures, chases, and conquests - on a variety of different boards designed for an astonishing diversity of games. Today the compelling mix of strategy, skill, and chance is as strong as ever; new board games are invented almost daily, while the perennial favourites continue to attract new devotees and reveal new possibilities. The Oxford History of Board Games investigates the principles of board games throughout the ages and across the world, exploring the fascinating similarities and differences that give each its unique appeal, and drawing out the significance of game-playing as a central part of human experience - as vital to a culture as its music, dance, and tales. Beautifully illustrated and with diagrams to show the finer points of the games, this is a fascinating and accessible guide to a richly rewarding subject. In his trade-mark accessible, entertaining style, David Parlett looks at the different families of games: games based on configuration or connection, races or chases, wars or hunts, capture or blockade. He focuses mainly on traditional games, the folk entertainments that have grown up organically through the centuries, and which exhibit endless local variations, although he discusses also the commercial products that have tried, with varying degrees of success, to match their astonishing popularity. This is not primarily a how-to book, although the rules and strategies of certain games are discussed in detail, neither does it offer sure-fire tips for success, although with a fuller understanding of a game the reader will undoubtedly become a better-informed, if not better, player. Rather, it is an affectionate and authoritative survey of one of the most familiar parts of our cultural history, which has until now been inexplicably neglected.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Resorce........2001-09-14
David Parlet should be commended for his clarity and organization. The History of Board Games is an amazing resorce for anyone who is interested in the evolution, origin and history of games like chess, checkers, tafl, backgamon, fanorona, nyout, seega, alquerque, nine mans morris and many many other games.
Great new book on games!.......1999-07-23
David Parlett has writen a magnificent book on the history of board games world wide. The book is well organized, clearly written and complete. It takes it's place along side the great work on games and game collecting, and is a "must have" for any game lover. It is hard to imagine a work more thoroughly or more loving prepared and it is clear that Mr. Parlett is one of the foremost experts on this subject. Each chapter is devoted to a subset of game type, there are dozens of charts ranging from "probability curves for binary lots" (two sided dice) to the "quantity of letters in Scrabble." 26 different Chess variants are presented with diagrams of the pieces and their boards, as well as board games from cultures ranging from the Aztecs to the Zuni and everyone in between. The only disappointment in this otherwise outstanding work is the lack of a complete bibliography on game study. But the book is meticulously footnoted and sources are listed at the end of each chapter. I have already made several of the games that Mr. Parlett had described in his book, to the enjoyment of my family and friends. This is not an "How To" book the strictest sense, but an invaluable tool for anyone interested in the subject of board games and their history.
A must buy for anyone interested in games!.......1999-05-04
"The Oxford History of Board Games", the latest book from British writer and games expert David Parlett, is a magnificent overview of the development of games over the millenia. Such a book is long overdue - the previous similar work was H.J.R. Murray's "A History of Board-Games", published back in 1952. Parlett however has the distinct advantage of another half a century of research, and this shows: His book even includes and discusses (not to say dissects) the Roman board game recently excavated by archeologists in Colchester, and rounds off with a chapter on modern board game design: Risk, Monopoly, Diplomacy, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and a host of others are to be found right there. Parlett is thus able to correct a number of the mistakes made by Murray, and adds considerably to the store of knowledge in the field of games. Parlett also in his book divides the games by a very logical classification, and tells about the historical development of each in turn. This book is in short a long-overdue milestone, and an absolute must for anyone with the slightest interest in games. Despite the thoroughness with which Parlett treats the subject, the writing is lucid, sprinkled with interesting cultural references and topped with occasional flashes of dry British humour. I cannot recommend it highly enough - and as a collector of books on games, with 1100 titles on my shelves, I should know. - Dan Glimne

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for "survey" and "college accounting" courses.......2005-08-21
This well-written text closely tracks the content of "Survey of Accounting" and "College Accounting" textbooks and courses offered at many community and 4-year colleges. ("Principles of Accounting" courses are similar, but they contain more theory than the other two. This book is still good, but might need some supplements.) The exercises and problems are excellent, and the solutions appear right after them so it's easy to check your work. I would have given 5 stars if there were a few more memory aids and helpful hints to make learning the material even easier. But overall, very good and easy to follow.
What a Lifesaver.......2000-08-01
Just what I was looking for. College accounting was long ago and unused for many years. This book is a great one for dusting off the brain cells. It is well written, easy to understand, and even has T account diagrams. It's like college in the comfort of my own home. The exercises are to the point and provide ample worksheet space. Much better and certainly more affordable than many textbooks.

Great Overview.......2006-05-27
If you were studying accounting or bookkeeping on your own or in a college setting, and you made a small booklet of everything you highlighted or underlined in your textbook that you expected to see on the final exam you would re-create this book. I wish I had it when I was preparing for my accounting exams. This book won't make you an accountant, only experience and a lot of hard work will do that, but I'll bet you keep a copy of "Schaum's Easy Outline Bookkeeping and Accounting by Joel J. Lerner" in your desk for the first year on the job.
Difficult to understand.......2004-07-14
This book is definitely not for novice bookkeepers. You really need to know a lot about the subject in order to understand the material in this book. I personally felt as though it was a waste of money, and it has not helped me enter the bookkeeping field as I had hoped it would have. I had bookkeeping in college 30 years ago and thought this book would refresh my memory, but it did not.
