Disillusioned. Skip It........2007-08-27
This is a biased and officially licensed piece of pro-Walt Disney propaganda. The animation tips from Frank Thomas, one of the greatest animators who ever lived, are priceless. But he and his buddy Ollie Johnston (who was not nearly as talented as Thomas) are biased, and as a history, it is severely flawed.
Many vital artists to the Disney style of animation are given the shaft, which essentially anyone outside of the Nine Old Men. Fred Moore, Art Babbitt, and Bill Tytla are almost completely ignored. Director Jack Kinney and animator John Sibley, the team responsible for Disney's inarguably best short subject series, Goofy, are not even mentioned. They do a good job of erasing all of the 'bombs' such as Alice in Wonderland and Three Caballeros as well.
I also am repulsed at the lauding of such features as Robin Hood and The Rescuers, in favor of work by the studio many years earlier that was inarguably superior. And any tome this size that gives only four mentions to Dumbo is not worth owning.

this book is really very much demanded by the young animation student like my-self.so the publisher should try to reprint this kind of a goldmine of animation.and i am sure as the animation world is expandind day by day it will be demanded more and more.our library has a couple of book and some of the animators possess them but still every animator should carry this Bible the lifelong.
Now I Know Why This Book is So Hard to Find.......2000-06-24
Finally, I found a used copy of this book in Chicago. I had heard it was the "Bible" of animation, but I was skeptical; I have seen too many glorified advertising campaigns sold in coffee table format. (Did we really need any background information on "Hercules?") But now that I actually own a copy and have been reading it - I am really blown away by how much I didn't know I didn't know.
This book gives a perspective on animation I have been searching for for a long time. Short of plunking down $10,000 to attend animation school, this book has helped me understand what is necessary to look for from an artistic angle when I am drawing. Over and over I have been told to draw more, but from what perspective, with what emphasis, to what end? All of that is covered in such an elementary way that I can't believe I never got it before now.
This book is worth all of the praise I have been hearing about it. It was also worth every ounce of energy I have used trying to find a copy to purchase. As for the negative comments I have heard about the reprint Hyperion version of this book, for me it simply doesn't matter. Can I see a difference in the plates? Sure I can. Is the information presented any less valuable or understandable? No. And that's the bottom line for me.

Beautiful images, disappointing text.......2006-07-25
I agree with the previous poster that the definitive book on this subject has yet to be written. The printing is first-rate, so the images are gorgeously presented, although I wish some of them were larger.
The down side is that the text does not go into nearly enough depth on the subject. The introductory essay is just that, a good introduction to the topic, but each chapter (chapters are each devoted to an alternative process) has a short essay which only devotes a paragraph or two to each artist, followed by pages and pages of images which left me wanting to know more.
The essay by Chuck Close and the interview with Sally Mann are fascinating, but only serve to illustrate the potential this subject has to offer, but the book doesn't quite live up to.
Four stars on the strength of the images.
Important subject, narrow approach.......2005-09-18
Lyle's focus on the recent upsurge of interest in historic and alternative printing techniques in photography focuses on a fascinating area of work in contemporary art, but is flawed by the writer's tendency to use obfuscating language, deployed in a tone that suggests you're "in the loop" if you get it and not if you don't. The subject awaits its definitive treatment but this volume is useful in the meantime.
Excellent Coffee Table Book.......2003-02-23
Beautifuly constructed book with alot of really nice images. Certainly anyone could appreciate this book. My only complaint is that in the opening/introductory chapters, there is alot of unused space and few images until you get past that.

Weissman's charming and respectful approach to his child characters has been compared to Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts, though Weissman displays a distinctly darker sense of humor without excluding younger readers from his audience. White Flower Day is his best book to date, a mix of absurd imagination and very human emotion, certain to entertain and enlighten readers of all ages.

Just icky. The humor, while dark, isn't even that funny. Yes, I agree with others, the ALL CAPS is annoying though you do get used to it. I give her credit for writing and getting this drivel published--more than most people have ever done. But the lists that meandered; the murdering of the old annoying ladies, while funny, was just mean; all the sex, oy; hell was interesting for a nanosecond, but move on already, we got it; and the suicides and rebirths--did she deserve it? I lost interest at that point and skipped to the end. I would have given one star but like I said earlier, at least she wrote it and got it published and all of us have read it. So two stars for Lucy and good luck in the future...maybe more structure and less caps next time?
I wish the author knew how to write........2005-06-17
This book is just a mess! The author needs to develop better writing skills. One of many things that annoyed me about this book is the author's bizarre habbit of putting words in caps lock. Throughout each page certain words are in caps lock which is not only annoying, it is distracting. It would seem that at some points in this book the author gives up on trying to further the plot by making long lists, sometimes half a page to a page long. So as a tribute to the author I will make my own list of words I would use to describe this book: boring, pointless, waste of paper, money, time, and pathetically bad.
Awful Bilge.......2005-04-23
Bought this because the author sounded like a humorist. While she displays some humor, the tale told also is dark, depraved, and disgusting. Started reading this on a dreary day to cheer self up -- very poor choice. Bilge. Stay away from this yuck. Would give it minus-5-stars, if possible. Make that minus-10. If you want a cheerful, fun read, buy Bridget Jones or other books akin to it. Again -- yuck to Dot in the Universe!!!
Unusual, entertaining and wholly her own.......2004-07-24
In this book Ellman has created a very unusual story that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. While her interest in frequently accentuating words in ALL CAPS is odd at first, once you get used to it, it becomes more like when a friend puts her hand on your arm to emphasise her point during conversation.
The story of Dot reflects much of the malaise in society, and matter of factly and amusingly incorporates some taboo stuff such as infidelity, porno flicks, murder, vivisection and incest. Ellman also has a knack of gettting into tangents, or at least the first seem like tangents, but their power is likly very calucalated. I found her cheeky tirade on What if Animals Did This to You? (where she invites the reader to imagine if animals treated us as we treat them) to be especially amusing.
if you want something cooky, a little bit naughty and very unusual, then this book is or you.
You'll Never Look at Tea Cosies the Same Way Again.......2004-06-15
Lucy Ellman is a revelation. She's an American expat who has taken up residence in England and has acquired the saucy edginess of some of the better English satirists (think of a female Waugh or Amis). While maybe not yet in that league stylistically, she is, at least on the basis of this book, equally as funny.
Ellman's central character, Dot Butser starts out relatively pleased with herself, with her middle class English seaside lifestyle and with her sexually charged husband, whom she believes to be a deep sea fisherman. As the story unfolds, Dot's universe unravells. Hilariously. Bit by bit, Dot comes to see the sordid truth behind the comfortable facade that she has created for herself. She embarks on a quest of self-discovery, depression, suicide, rebirth (several rebirths, in fact, as an assortment of creatures that will have Buddhist and Hindus everywhere chuckling knowingly to themsleves). Finally she comes full circle, in a nice, ironic ending.
Readers who are offended by course language should steer clear. Ellman has the vocabulary of your typical longshoreman. She's pretty graphic about bodily functions and sexual proclivities. But she's not Andrew Dicey Clay. There is a point to her vulgarity, as it reflects the environment she so wittily demolishes. Like all good satirists, she's not too high on the present state of society, neither in England, nor even more negatively, in America.
About the tea cosies. It will give you a brief idea of Ellman's style and humor to illustrate Dot's preoccupation with them. It drives Dot's philandering husband, John, up the wall that she is so obsessed with the things:
"Particularly perturbing to him was Dot's TEA-COSY COLLECTION. They reminded him of his grandma's UNDIES, saggy, baggy and stained.... . Dot's tea cosies were ancient, home-made WOOLEN concoctions, knitted by women inexplicably driven to provide the world with decorative structures in which to house teapots. "
Some readers may be put off by the stylistic device of using ALL CAPS for emphasis, however, I found it an integral part of the humor. I didn't always understand what motivated the choices for why particular words were so emphasized, but I wasn't distracted by it.
Ellman has a great satirical eye and comedic voice. I'm certainly looking forward to reading more titles from this lady. If you're a fan of British satire, or just enjoy a fun, brief read now and again, this short, episodic novel will fill the bill. I had to deduct one star for one Ellman device that gets a bit tiresome after a while. She's obsessed with lists. Sometimes the lists are rather clever and funny. At other times they are mind numbing and one wants to have done with them. In the overall scheme, it's a minor annoyance and Ellman fully succeeded in keeping me entertained for 200 pages.

A useful book to have.......2006-05-11
I bought and read this book and there is lots of useful information here but I wish that the authors had gone further.
May I also suggest Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison as a good book to go along with this one.
Untapped Wealth Discovered is good reference material and readers would do well to buy and read it after reading Daily's and Laurence's book.
Simple Explanations of a Complex Tax Code.......2006-01-20
Taxes related to a small business are complex and even a little bewildering if you haven't gotten into them before. But as this book says, they're not rocket science difficult.
Here in one book is a general introduction to the major business taxes that we all have to face. In addition there are comments based on experience such as: "Few people ever file form 5213 (Election to Postpone Determination that Activity is for Profit), and for good reason. It draws the IRS's attention and may invite an audit." This kind of advice is hard to find, but here the author has enough experience in the area to make such statements.
Most of the book is on the standard kinds of accounting records you'll need to keep, the limits and philosophies that the IRS follows, etc.
I'd rate this as an excellent and informative book, BUT if I really had a problem with those guys, I'd want an attorney to handle it.

I recommend this book to individuals who run a small business or plan to start a small business.
This is a great book that goes through some tax fundamentals that all small businesses should know. Fredrick Daily has a great talent with translating complicated tax issues into plain English. The book goes through fundamentals areas such as tax basics, deductions, C and S corporations, fringe benefits, and etc.
At the very least, this book has prompted a look back at how my small business' tax structure is set up.
For those who care to save time and money, this is the book for you.

This Book Saved Me .......2004-09-10
I bought this book as soon as I was notified of an upcoming IRS audit. The sections on reconstructing logs and receipts really saved me. The auditor accepted everything that I reconstructed. I also knew exactly what to expect at the audit. I am now keeping my records in a way that leaves me unafraid of the IRS anymore. This book, along with Mr. Daily's "Stand Up To the IRS" is the best investment I have ever made in my small business.

I am fan of the nolo.com website and I am a bigger fan of the Nolo Books. We started our software company as and LLC and turned it into a corporation a couple of years ago. I didn't buy this book before that point, but wish I did. Either way it is great that I have the book now. The book is well organized and I read through it cover to cover originaly. Tax Savvy now sits on my desk and I can use it as a quick reference. I am the kind of person that likes to know the "what, how and why" before I talk to our accountants or our lawyers, and this book enables me to do that. Bottom line... a must have

He lays out strategy after strategy to minimize wasted time and maximize profit. I thought I knew what I was doing before but this book has opened up whole new worlds of opportunity for me. I better learned what I can and can't deduct, how to take advantage of fringe benefits, how to reduce IRS penalties and much more. Tax Savvy for Small Business is literally worth its weight in gold.
Excellent overview - concise and to the point........2003-08-11
This guide is different from the many tax guides out there from big names like Ernst & Young, etc. because it is more focussed on small businesses and you get the most relevant information in the most concise fashion. There in lies the limitation of this great book. You may have to refer to the other tax guides if your particular situation is too unique.
But the conciseness and focussed approach was extremely helpful in clarifying a lot of points for me. I had tried reading several of the bigger guides (with three times as many pages as this book) and gotten confused because it was too much information. So when I saw the Nolo guide, I was pleasantly surprised that every topic in the book was relevant to me as a small business owner! It was perfect for my needs. I now started understanding the very same topics I had so much difficulty following in the other books. For example - I was trying to research the differences between S Corporations and LLCs. When I opened this Nolo guide, I went straight to the chapter on LLCs and read the section - Comparing LLCs with Other Entities. In one sentence I knew the difference between these two entities! According to the book, the basic difference being that you can allocate income and expenses disproportionately (to share ownership) in an LLC but not in a S Corporation! Wow! I liked the speed with which I could find this critical piece of information I was researching.
The book is divided into 6 parts - The Basics (Business Income and Tax Deductible Expenses, Recordkeeping and Accounting, etc.), The Form of Your Business (Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, S Corporations, etc.), Thinking Small (Family Businesses, Microbusinesses and Home-Based Businesses), Fringe Benefits (Retirement Plans etc.), Buying or Selling a Business, and Dealing with the IRS. There isn't a single page that is irrelevant.
If you have very advanced questions, you are better off looking through a bigger book but you would benefit tremendously by reading this book first. It will give you a firm grounding in the basics across the board. Good luck!
Good ways to save tax dollars.......2002-09-03
This book not only explains deductions but offers good ideas for saving tax dollars. Highly recommended for folks that have some accounting or tax knowledge. Excellent reference if you're thinking of starting a business, or you already have.
