The definitive book about Morris glass.......2003-09-29
This 2-volume set of books is the result of over 20 years of painstaking research by A.C.Sewter. Windows are listed and cross-referenced by location, by subject, by designer and by date. Works catalogued include not only those in the UK but, where Sewter could find them, also examples from around the world. In addition to the catalogue itself Sewter also writes an excellent and scholarly introduction. One volume contains mostly illustrations - some in colour but the majority in black and white. An excellent book and an essential read for any serious student of stained glass of the Victorian era. It should be noted that one volume has been out of print for some time and can only be obtained in used form.

Book Description
Acclaimed American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark (b. 1940) made her first iconic pictures when living in Turkey on a Fulbright Fellowship in the mid-1960s. Her photographs of Bombay brothels, shot in the late 1970s, were published in 1981 in Falkland Road, a book that became legendary and confirmed her status as one of the most prominent and provocative documentary photographers working today.Mark's pictures are a celebration of humanity in its most diverse and eccentric forms. Circuses, gypsy camps, children yearning for adulthood, the poor and destitute are some of her recurring themes. Mark has the unique ability to capture gestures and expressions that translate the intense emotions of her subjects. Compassionate but never literal, her pictures can be humorous, tragic, enigmatic, shocking, and oftentimes all of these simultaneously. This book presents for the first time a selection of the strongest pictures of Mark's forty-year career, drawing from emblematic series such as "Falkland Road," "Indian Circus," and "Twins," as well as a selection of previously unpublished images. The photographs are accompanied by an introduction by Weston Naef, and an interview with Mark that provides context and behind-the-scene anecdotes. Together Mark's images and words provide intimate insights into the lives of others, presenting compelling stories of human strength and suffering.

5 stars but for the binding.......2007-10-01
Hadn't heard of Mary Ellen Mark until today where I attended a lecture by her at the Akron Museum of Art. This book provides a wonderful introduction to Mark's work over the 50 or so years. The subject matter, on the surface appears to be quite varied from circuses through to poverty, but the underlying theme is fairly constant - the struggle of the impoverished, ill, and all others that occupy the fringes of society. Locations range from China, USA, Turkey, India, Mexico etc. forming cultural backdrops to her photographic documentaries. Images range from a photo of an ethiopian refugee laying completely spent after giving birth, sleeping Damm family with the fathers arm wrapped around the daughter in an obvious indictment of child abuse, through to Mother Teresa attending to a dying man. Mark has selcted the 134 images as the ones she deems to be the strongest of the many thousands she took throughout her career. And a thought provoking collection it is too.
The collection is worthy of 5 stars apart from the way in which many of the images span both pages with a resulting fold down the middle. Thinking more might have been gained by restricting each image to a page - obviously the larger format provides for greater detail.
An excellent collection for those familiar and not so familiar with the photographic eye of Mary Ellen Mark. Highly recommended.
Mary Ellen Mark: Exposure.......2007-08-02
The contents of the book mandate a rating of 5 stars... this is an excellent book. But the binding of the book rate a one star. The book - which is paper back - has no real way to keep the pages in... and the pages began to separate upon first use. So sad to put together such superb material in such a shoddy manner.
disappointing format.......2006-03-21
This is a nice collection of haunting, melancholy images that span the artist's career. You can certainly feel her affinity for the deprived and the castaways of society. The images often precariously balance the line between documentary and exploitation, yet the subjects never appear to be disingenuous. The reproductions and the quality of the paper are top-notch. However, most of the images span across the spine of the book, which I find quite annoying. Imagine taking a fine art photograph and putting a large crease in the middle of it. I know it allows the images to be larger, but I find it really distracting. Don't do like I did. Make sure you check the book out in person before ordering it.
must see photography .......2005-11-07
Mary Ellen Marks is important because her photography is not focused on poverty, violence, mental instability, or drug abuse, its about the life of real people and how they have had to live. Her pictures of children in Indian brothels show smiles and colorful curtains, though the horror of child prostitution is unforgivable. Her photos of seniors in Florida shows their is a lot of life left to live(my personal favorite is the lady dancing with the jukebox)though they are in senior centers and retirement communities. I really liked her pictures of Halloween in NYC shelter because it shows how happy these kids are to have costumes and parties. When you look at her photos, you stop and recognize the sadness or the atrocity of the situation, but there is no pity just respect for those having to deal with it. I love how simple and touching her photographs are and thankful that I was allowed to be blessed with the life I have.
Incredible documentary photography.......2005-10-08
I popped into a book store tonight before a movie and saw this book on the shelf and thought I'd leaf through it...I ended up sitting on a bench and looking at almost every photo, and even calling my companion over to take a look.
I've seen Mark's work before and never really was blown away by it, but this was different. It's a large book with large photos and it covers a wide variety of subjects. When you look at these candid portraits, you are instantly struck by not only the power of the images themselves, but a sense of wonder as to where she had to go to get these photos and the trust she had to gain to get such intimacy with her subjects. It's mostly black and white, but there are some color images too.
I wanted to buy the book on the spot, but it was really expensive in the store, so I am going to order it here.
If you are into documentary photography, you'll love this book.

The Best and Most Complete Comics Reference.......2007-03-04
This book is truly amazing. A team of about ten people has read every issue of just about every comic book and graphic novel ever published in English, and reviews them all in this book.
I used the earlier edition of this book, and then this edition, as my guides in starting to buy and read comics and graphic novels about two years ago. Before then, I hadn't looked at a comic book since I was a kid. Since then, I've bought and read maybe five hundred comics and about one hundred graphic novels published over the past twenty years. I only buy items that get a "recommended" rating in this book, and I've been disappointed only a handful of times. I would estimate that I'm about a tenth of the way through all the recommended items, and that only about one twentieth of all the items they review get recommended.
If you want to start reading comics, this book is a must-have.
A Breathtaking Comic Book Reference.......2005-06-04
As a comic book collector of 27 years, it's hard to shock or impress me with a reference book. This one did. 787 pages of small print, detailed reference on almost every comic book printed from the beginning to 2003 when this was printed.
What makes this so different from many of the offerings out there is that this book includes one shots and hard to find small press titles, not just books from Marvel or DC. Are you wondering about something Sirius, Fantagraphics, or even Kitchen Sink put out? This has you covered. Are you curious how many mini-series Wolverine has been in and what the background on those issues is? This book has you covered. It not only lists titles, it gives a description of what happened within a series and pinpoints key issues. What it does not do is give prices, but they're always Overstreet's Price Guide for that.
I'm so impressed with mine I intend to get a few for presents for other comic book collecting friends. This is the perfect addition to any collectors library whether they're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer.
For the newcomer it also provides a dictionary of comic book terminology.
I just can't say enough about this wonderful book. Highly recommended!
You will challenge yourself to find something not in it............2004-11-28
I bought and loved the first edition of the "Slings & Arrows Comic Guide" and wondered if the second edition would pass muster...well it did with flying colors.
Listed by title, some poor people went insane to read pracitically every single comic out there and give indepth reviews of nearly every title. Not every single title is covered- i.e. the Archie Line of books (you would need a seperate book for this line alone but the key Archie titles are)- however other than that exception you will be hard pressed to find titles that are not mentioned.
I found myself leafing through the book from section to section as my nuerons fired and I wanted to check up on this and that. It was a great help for catching up with series that I had lost touch with.
Modern Age - Golden Age and Silver (including the independent implosion of the late late 1980's) are covered.
Great reading and addicting.

Book Description
Spike Lee rises again. This time, he and Lisa Jones document his transition from struggling independent to mainstream filmmaker with the making of the Columbia Pictures film, School Daze. No longer working with a small cast and a painfully tight budget, Spike Lee and his crew find themselves working in a swirl of university politics, a cast of thousands, big musical production numbers and the not-insignificant pressures of coming up with a hit in the majors. He "uplifts the race" by demystifying the process of producing an entertaining commercial film that, at the same time, delivers a stinging - yet funny - critique on American culture.
Customer Reviews:
Love this film!.......2006-04-03
I remember buying this book at an independent bookstore in Boston about 15 years ago. Because I'm a navy brat, during all of our moves, I ended up losing the book. So I am definitely happy that I have the opportunity to purchase this MUST HAVE once again. I will also be able to read the script with a new perspective, since I am older and wiser now. And yes when I first saw the movie...I was too young to be looking at or even reading about School Daze, but I found the story so intriguing even at that young age. I remember my parents allowing me to see the dance sequence and then telling me to go back upstairs because the rest of the movie was "too adult"...well the movie remained in the house so I eventually snuck and looked at it...and continue to view it to this day...I even have the special edition DVD which is another MUST HAVE. I ended up attending a historically black university, partly due to my parents, A Different World, and of course SCHOOL DAZE.
If you love the movie you gotta have this book!.......2004-03-15
School Daze is my favorite film of all-time. You can imagine how pleased I am to have a book about making the film. The book contains so much valuable info. Spike discusses being kicked off the campus of Morehouse Univ. in the middle of production, his struggles with Island Pictures, and the big jump from directing a film independently (She's Gotta Have It) to a bigger budget & all that comes with it. It also features commentary from some of the stars of the film such as Laurence Fishburne, Tisha Campbell, Joie Lee, Doris Witherspoon & Roger Smith. It also features pictures & the original script (you will notice alot of good stuff was cut from the final film). Definitely a must have!!

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Aging Studies, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data with an overall sample of 50 retired African American professional women, this article examines their unpaid community work on behalf of disadvantaged Blacks. Using both feminist and life course perspectives, the article demonstrates how location and historical forces shaped their activities and their retirement scripts. Like educated women in previous generations, these Black retirees felt an obligation to do race uplift work and to give back to their communities, especially to Black youth. The resulting tension between retirement as a time of ''freedom'' and their sense of obligation to work on behalf of the needy contradicts middle-class male, white notions of retirement and highlights the need to recognize that there is not just one but multiple modes of retirement.

Book Description
Faulty decision-making can have dire consequences, and when it comes to group decisions, the challenges are even greater. Join Dr. Jerry B. Harvey as he clearly illustrates why no organization wants to find themselves goin' to Abilene.
See how group dynamics can keep individuals from stating their true beliefs for fear of isolation and separation, and how that often leads to mismanaged agreement.
You'll learn to recognize the warning signs of risky group dynamics and improve decision-making processes throughout your organization.
Customer Reviews:
the abilene paradox and other medidations on management.......2007-05-07
It is an excellent and enlightening book with much food for thought and a precise account of reality in malfunctioning organizations. Also provides suggestions for improving organizations and helping them act in an ethical manner.
A classic and a must read.......2005-11-04
With humor and "paradox" Professor Jerry Harvey does a great job in stimulating personal reflections about management. Among the several tales, see Management and the myth of Abraham ("every time a boss makes a stupid mistake, he sends his administrative assistant to try to rectify it"), my favorite Captain Ashok and the Concept of Grace ("Asoh told the truth, and we are starved for it") and Group Tyranny and the Gunsmoke Phenomenon (our behaviour is related to our fear of separation but we have a choice "when confronted with the possibility of group tyranny"). Enjoy your reading and start thinking.
Thought Provoking Essays.......2004-12-30
These "Meditations" provide great thinking into how to be a more effective manager. As "Meditiations", this is not a how to cookbook on management, or checklist. There are no promises of improved customer service, or increased efficiency. Rather, by reading them, your thinking about management will improve.
Two examples on the meditations:
1 - The Abilene Paradox essay talks about a family vacation to Abilene. Nobody really wants to go there, but everyone thinks everyone else wants to go there, but is affraid to speak up. The lesson is self evident, but the story conveys it in a manner much more memorable than a directive to "Create an organization with open communication"
2 - The writings of Elliott Jaques. Harvey introduces the concept of the "Requisite Organization", an idea developed by Jaques. This highlights the imnportance of understanding complexity (as defined by the time horizon of projects one is capable of thinking of) and designing an organization where that is the key component to success. That's a deep thought in today's quarter-driven business.
Reading and pondering these meditations will make one a better manager and leader. But it isn't spoon feeding, it takes some thought as well.
Wonderful advice, coming and going.......2004-01-25
The Abilene Paradox... has been one of my favorite books for many years. Whenever I read it, I find something of value in it for whatever challenges I am facing in my work. Plus, it's just fun to read. The first essay (the actual Abilene Paradox) should be required reading for anyone who wonders why groups do stupid things. And the last essay (on teaching future managers to cheat) should be required reading for anyone who wonders how one simple change could make a huge difference in business education, making it more relevant and more solidly ethically based. Everything in between these two essays is worth, reading, too.
All Managers should know about Abilene!.......2003-06-12
The first time I heard about the Abilene Paradox was back in the early 1980's when Jerry Harvey made a video for use by the government in training management.
I had run into a recent management situation in which our Director wanted only agreement with her. I immediately began to search a reference on "Abilene" and management.
So, immediately, you can see how much this little video lecture influenced me. Over twenty years later, I still remembered the reference that was needed now in 2003, and it was called the road to "ABILENE" or something similar.
A quick search on my favorite reference site "Amazon.com" and voila: I found a book called the "Abilene Paradox".
Jerry writes likes he speaks but *OH* he speaks in such an amazingly entertaining way.
Jerry gives a lot of examples of things that can happen in the workplace that will bring you down a path to disaster. He is amazingly accurate in pointing out the potholes to avoid.
Although, he is a bit shy on things you should do, I highly recommend this book. If all you get out this is that "Yes" men or "Yes" folks are not conducive to good business, then you have learned one gem of management that you will value forever.
Product Description
The Abilene Paradox 2E video is a classic training program that has helped thousands of organizations increase profits and productivity. This completely updated second edition offers a fresh, new look and a faster, more engaging pace.
The Abilene Paradox video delivers a highly entertaining parable from management expert Dr. Jerry B. Harvey. This story of a family trip to Abilene offers a timeless, compelling lesson on reading the road signs and knowing when you're headed toward Abilene. Travel the road to Abilene and you'll arrive at a place where deeply held, logical values fall victim to group dynamics. It's a bumpy ride culminating in meaningless outcomes and blame, but you can skip the trip if you know how to read the road signs.
The Abilene Paradox video key learning points...
* How to avoid false consensus
* How to overcome the fear of speaking out
* Effective decision-making within a group
A re-make of CRM's Classic from many years back. The "Abilene Paradox" offers a fascinating discussion about why group agreement isn't always what it seems. I particularly liked the supporting examples and I think viewers will be able to relate and be highly entertained at the same time. While I do feel the video doesn't go far enough describing and demonstrating the behaviors necessary to avoid mismanaged agreement, it is still a poignant and entertaining video, well worth checking out.
Interesting, thought provoking story and narrative
Good supporting workplace examples
