The late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are frequently labeled the age of theater. Throughout western Europe, the dramatic arts attained new heights of cultural prestige, political importance, and commercial success. This series of essays investigates the dialogue between the newly invigorated theater and the plastic arts. Discussed are the interactions between spectator and spectacle, social performance and the staging of the individual, the shaping of space and time, and the debates over the relationship that visual and theatrical representations have to the objects they portray.

The Trattato and the Costruzione are primary source books on 17th-century Italian theater architecture and stagecraft that have remained relatively unknown.

The Trattato was first published in Italian in 1676, and this is the first published edition in any language of the Costruzione, which is little known even to Italian theater scholars.

The Trattato is the prototype for the genre of books on theater architecture. It is the first volume to treat the theater auditorium as a separate edifice and is unique in its description of the shape and characteristics of theater auditoria, including an explanation of the arrangement of palchetti, the predecessors of the 18th-century loges as well as the first detailed description of the horseshoe-shaped auditorium.

The Costruzione contains the first comprehensive description of the 17th-century stagehouse and the stage equipment normally installed. Together, the volumes reveal Fabrizio Carini Motta as a competent theater architect and stage machinist, easily equal to his more renowned contemporaries, such as Vigarani, Burnacini, or Torelli.

Chekhov Lite.......2000-03-27

First of all, the book's title is not Tropical Baroque: Pour Manileno Threatricals. It is Tropical Baroque: FOUR Manileno Theatricals.

It is really not very fair to say that Joaquin's plays are Chekhov lites. Aside from good storytelling techniques and tight structure common in both, comparing Joaquin and Chekhov is comparing apples and oranges. What I really mean by Chekhov lite is that Nick Joaquin is merely good and intelligent and original, but not outstandingly superior like Chekhov.

Having said that, the 4 plays in this book are eminently readable, and eminently stageable. The best of them is "Portrait of an Artist as a Filipino." It must really be fashionable during the first half of the last century to call one's work "portrait of an artist" as there are indeed many famous and a lot more forgettable work bearing those magic words in their title. But in Joaquin's particular case, there really is a portrait of an artist in the play, never seen, that provides the motivation for the actuations of the characters. It is essentially a tale of 2 sisters, old maids, and how they uphold the glorious past of their father (the artist) as Old Manila is rapidly being transformed into the modern age. After reading, or better yet, watching, the play, you will come away, paradoxically, with both melancholia and tender happiness, even if you don't know anything about Philippine history. That's how good this play is. The rest of the plays are equally interesting and readable and easy to stage, but "Portrait" alone is worth the price of the whole book.

Great for a non-pro.......2007-06-06

I'm not sure what the two other reviewers were thinking when they gave this two stars, this book is awesome. Surely, if you're already making money at this, the book may not be too useful to you, but if you're thinking of getting started and don't know how to get a foot in the door, this book is great. It goes over the major issues in a very plain, straightforward way. It talks about everything from equipment to software to business models, to advice about taking good pictures. Surely, the book can't tell you "sell your pictures on this site" or "talk to this person if you want to open a gallery" but it gives you a good framework for understanding the business, what area is right for you to target your photo sales, etc.

The writing is easy to read and digest. The author has a funny sense of humor, but unlike one of the other reviewers, I don't think he's cocky at all.

It would have been nice if the other reviewers suggested a BETTER book than this one on the same subject, because I haven't found a better one.

Disappointing lack of useful information.......2007-04-13

On the surface of it, this book seemed to cover what I was looking for, but it only took me 5 min after receiving it to realize that it would not be very useful. The format is chatty and rather uninformative and states mostly the obvious, like the fact that you can make money by selling prints, or pictures on the internet, but without much actual information on how to do so. The book does contain a lot of nice pictures (presumably by the author), but the print quality is actually surprisingly poor for a photography book.

Fairly informative, not quite what I was looking for.......2007-04-06

From the cover and a quick glances at some of the colorful photo filled chapters, this book seem promising at first. But the cliched saying of never judge a book by its cover has taken its toll. This book provides marginal advice on how to -potentially- make a profit from the wonderful world of digital photography, however, it fails to give any real world working model on how this can be accomplished.

Most of the marginally useful advices and sales model, i.e. pricing structure on stock photos, are based on the author's own personal preference and experience, rather than taking into account the wide breadth of pricing methods that exist in the real world of photography.

This is a great book for amateurs that are trying to break into the business of selling their prints from an outline or a strict table-of-content perspective of the available methods and channels of distribution to target, e.g. card stock, stock photo, art fairs, etc.

Most of topics cover seem to be more 'theoretical' than actual real-world hands down information and the author seems to expend more time, energy and care in expressing his disdain (with a condescending overtone, might I add) toward enthusiastic amateurs that aim to make it big and quick. His favorite recurring adjectives for such amateurs includes, but certainly are not limited to: prima donnas, pretentious, and pretend aficionado. Heller may be a [self-aggrandizing] professional photographer, but anyone with such high caliber should be more helpful, than pompous or supercilious. Remember Heller, you were an amateur at one point too.

Further more, Heller likes to take a seemingly interesting idea, get your hopes up and then tell you why you shouldn't pursue it because the odds are just too high against you.

Bottomline: If you are serious about licensing your photographs for use, then this book does not really cover the core foundations that you need to get your feet wet. On the otherhand, if you want to take a look at what you can do to -potentially- make a profit from your hobby, then this book basically gives you an -general- idea.

I'd give this book a 1-star for the lack of usable information and the author's cockiness, but it does contain some interesting theories and sales model to warrant a 2-star rating.

Well worth the money and the wait!!.......2006-02-17

Dan Heller has been sharing his insights and experience on his web site for some time. Now, this book has captured just that insight and experience in one, easy to read volume. For anyone who is thinking about making photography their livelihood or for amateurs who are interesting in what it takes to succeed, this book is a goldmine of information.

Beautiful Women, Nicely Drawn........2007-08-15

If, for some reason, you were looking for an illustrated comic-book style publication - with some erotic lesbian content - then the `Liz & Beth' series is probably for you.

Beth is a beautiful brunette heroine (the brains) - and Liz is her blonde (and bimbo-ish) - but equally ravishing lover. Liz always gets herself into trouble - and Beth always comes to save her.

The heterosexuality of both Liz and Beth are established early - when they make love to men. But it's their own sexual tryst with each other - and other girls - which makes for delicious eye candy.

All of the younger women in this series are beautifully shown - either fully naked or in various levels of undress. Most of the nudity depicted is from the rear - so the derrieres on these girls are heavenly. Most of the most intimate physical contact is unseen - although the oral sex (given to both men and women) is a bit more telling.

I didn't like how the older women were always the villains, with the most sinister being a 70-year-old Whistler's Mother type characters- who gets it on just as much as the babe's a fraction of her age.

What's really nice about this series is the love making between the women - which is sometimes rough - but just as often quite tender with lengthy body-to-body contact and romantic full mouth kissing.

This series was published in 1994, so the content is actually much more recent than one would've guessed. Back then, these adult comic books were probably intended for men. But it's nice, years later, that we ladies can enjoy them just as much.

'Art and Film Since 1945: Hall of Mirrors' accompanied a major exhibition presented by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1996 - in the Centenary of Cinema. This large scale exhibition charted the various aspects the dynamic relationship between film and modern art as it has developed over the last 50 years, and was an exploration the incredible impact that cinema has had on out visual at large, across the world and half the century. The exhibition drew on the immense expertise of Kerry Brougher, who curated the show and partly authored this catalogue. The catalogue is opened by Brougher's broad survey of the history of film and art, divided roughly into three moments (which was also the organising structure behind the exhibition) and goes on to explore other perspectives in illuminating essays by Russell Ferguson, Bruce Jenkins, Kate Linker et al. The volume is completed by a chronology of events and a comprehensive bibliography, which provides a useful tool for anyone interested in a further exploration of the field. Over all the catalogue is fascinating and inspiring reading for anyone with a passion for film and/or art. Especially to anyone who was fortunate enough to experience the exhibition the book is an absolute must. The publication must also be recommended for its fantastic illustrations, which adequately convey the spirit of the exhibition, even to art lovers and cinephiles who missed the show. The book is very pleasurable viewing as well as reading, and one finds oneself returning to it over and over again.

In the same vein I would like to recommend to other exhibition catalogues, which also offer valuable source material on the interdisciplinary relationship between film and art:

It was very clear and thorough. It is a pretty guide review for the Clep exam, but you will need to study Principles of Accounting II also for the Principles of Accounting CLEP.

Great "Nuts and Bolts" Book.......2005-11-23

If a company is going to buy assets to turn a profit, it has to first get capital from somewhere, right? And in the course of making sales and providing services, it needs to literally account for the use of that capital. Lerner and Cashin make readers comfortable working with major sources of capital in an easy to understand way.

Chapters 3 through 8 are the heart and soul of the book. They explore common stock issuance, subscriptions and treasury stock, retained earnings and bonds. By doing the "Solved Problems" and chapter-end exercises, I came to a much better understanding of accounting mechanics pertaining to capital concerns.

The book is also very valuable for those seeking to better understand manufacturing accounting, cost systems and budgets, as well as financial statement analysis.

Consistently clear, the authors do an excellent job in helping those interested in accounting better understand the subject matter. They helped me - I hope you benefit too!

The delivery was good. The condition of the book was good (new book). I would not hasate to buy another book in the future.
