5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-01-02

This book was published at a time Mike Peters had a TV show in the US. This was never seen in other countries so reading this book may make you feel a little left out not knowing the man or his thoughts verbally.

This book however is fantastic and really shows you an easy and fast technique to drawing a unique style and how to adapt that to anything you draw as a cartoon. The best section of the cook is about caricaturing. Mike is one of the best to capturing a likeness in a cartoon like fashion without losing it.

After 16 years of cartooning myself, I keep this book as a reminder of what simplicity and style is all about.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible book.......2004-09-19

If you are looking to learn to cartoon or draw caricatures then please avoid this book. The cartooning style is poor and the book just has the author chat about how good he is and why he drew this and why he drew that - no real instruction - just some guy explaining how good he is. If you are a Mike Petere fan then you may like it but if you are learning or studying caricature or cartoons there are some very good books on the market. I actually felt ripped off buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Autobiogarphy in pictures.......2007-10-03

You want to see the best of Richard Avedon's photography? Well this is the book for you, no doubt

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and amazing photography.......2005-08-18

This is a book of photography with great detail. The book shows the photography of the artist as well as the long paragraphs about what the artist was doing during the time that he took the photograph and why he chose to take it in such a manner. The photography of Richard Avedon is showing in a variety of sizes, which is in the manner he would show his photography in a gallery. I think that works very well, because there are parts in the book where certain pages are dedicated to just one photograph. I was fascinated with the timetable of his photography, that actually takes up a fourth of the book, in which is it displayed by photographs of his work as well as his personal life. I enjoy the selection of photographs that are in this book because even though they are all portraits, they are interpreted in so many different ways. Each photograph tells something, either of the photographer or the subject that is being photographed.

The size of the book is very large, but it works perfectly with the subject it is portraying. The photographs are enjoyable in the sense that they can be seen with great detail. I don't think I would have had the same impact from the photographs if they had been placed in a book half its size. I think the only part of the book that could have been somewhat more enjoyable for me as a beginning photographer, would have been to read some information of how the photographer went about taking the photograph and what his preference in photography was. Some of the paragraphs start going into some details about a photograph but then just jump on to the next without giving an ending to the information.

The book in a whole, is a great book and I would recommend. I think that it is a great book to have if you plan on seeing professional photography.

3 out of 5 stars Useful roadmap to Avedon's work.......2000-02-24

I'm glad that I own this book but potential buyers should be aware that this is a history of Avedon's work, not a stunning presentation of his photographs. The book contains hundreds of images but most of them are small in size. The images are arranged chronologically with some associated text. The book also contains two essays about Avedon and a detailed bibliography listing press accounts about him. There is also a helpful list of the various books that Avedon has published.

I would recommend his other titles -- "In the American West" for example -- if you want to see the full-size, stunning photographs for which Avedon is famous.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not so good as I expected.......2000-02-02

The book is OK. Nevertheless beware: there is more text than photographs. And they are tiny in most cases. He who prefers to read about photographs rather than to see them will be pleased. I am a little disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrific.......1999-06-21

This is a wonderful collection. I have found myself going back to it again and again. I'm not sure Adam Gopnik was such a good choice, although he is a lively writer; but the other New Yorker art critic, Peter Schejhal (sp?) would certainly have been better, as entertaining as Gopnik but more focused and memorable. But this is just a small complaint; overall, I love this book and hope that every library in the world someday owns a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Coolest Book Ever.......2001-11-28

I like this book because, it is about something cool and different. The thing I don't like about it is the book is kind of hard to follow. This is a really good book besides that.I think any one who reads it should be over 10.Gundam is the coolest thing ever.

1 out of 5 stars Not quite as good..........2001-10-23

I consider myself a major Gundam fan. In fact, I've seen every Gundam saga except the first one. At first, I concluded that this book and saga are extremely well-drawn with good concepts and an interesting script, but only after twenty minutes, I found it insanely pointless and time wasting. I advise all major Gundam fans, who are greatly fascinated by the world of Gundam, to reconsider before buying this book; but don't let it prevent you from exploring the other Gundam series like 8th MS Team or Gundam Wing.

              5 out of 5 stars way cool!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-10-18

I expected the Manga to be a liitle better after I saw the Anime on Cartoon Network. But as it turns out I like the Anime better than the Manga. There is something about the Manga it just rushes into everything so quickly and doesn't leave time for the characters to develop. Though the animation is good and the characters look pretty much the same. All in all it is a good Manga book to read. It has 192 pages, a short character summary in the front, and a time line of the history of the Universal Century in the back.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but not not surprisd either.......2001-01-22

I was really reluctant to buy this graphic novel. I have already been through the Gundam hype before, and lost interest several times because of what it had become. But I also know the original Gundam series has very strong ethical themes. It's not all action and mecha.

I hadn't seen or remembered any of the original Gundam since it first aired (and was too young to understand many of the themes). So I thought I might purchase and read this first volume, and hopefully understand more of the story. I wanted to.

I was dissappointed to find that this book was action beginning to end. There isn't much time to know the characters, they just seem to develop immediately. However in all fairness, given the situation the characters are in, they are forced to develop quckly.

The manga does not provide what I expected, disappointing consiodering manga does not have the same time constraints as a televison programme. I would have liked it to follow more of what Yoshiyuki Tomino really wanted the story to be.

The is no doubt that the mechanical detail in the book is good, characters seem to take a second place in the beatuty of the art, and the story appears to follow the original story well. will I continue the series of graphic novels?

Perhaps, this is only the first book, I will give this version story a chance to develop some more.

...The anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam", (on which this manga is based) holds a Star Trek like place in Japanese culture, having spawned multiple sequals and many imitators.

Gundam moved the "giant robot genre" out of the giant robot superheros area and into the "giant robots as war machines of the future" mode.

This book is part of the continuing story of what happens when children at an obscure research post find themselves pressed into service as child soldiers.

This particular book starts as Amuro, the main character, is not handling it well and has taken off with the war machine he operates.

I enjoyed it as much as the others in this series. The art is good. The characters work. There's more giant robot battles than I'm normally looking for in fiction, but honestly, it's a war story. What should I expect?

                            Book Description

Heralded as the first true class book for the d20 system, The Quintessential Fighter provides vital information for any player wishing to exploit his Fighter character to the fullest. Since the game was first created, many years ago, Fighters have always had a rough deal when compared to the more esoteric classes such as Cleric, Rogue and Wizard. The Quintessential Fighter redresses this balance, taking the Fighter class further than it has ever been before. Weighing in at 128 pages, The Quintessential Fighter is jam-packed full of useful rules and rules sub-systems, making this class ever more flexible and capable. Character Concepts: A Fighter is always more than a sword in heavy armour. Through the use of the templates provided within Character Concepts, a player can give his Fighter an entire history and personality quickly and easily. The Prestige Fighter: From the lowly Peasant Hero and Outlaw to the dreaded Bounty Hunter and Knight, the Fighter class is expanded from a faceless warrior into a man or woman capable of forging legends single-handed. Tricks of the Trade: Only a Barbarian launches himself blindly into combat, hacking and slashing at his enemies. The Fighter is an expert in combat and warfare and is able to utilise a vast repertoire of tricks and tactics to overcome his enemies. This chapter fully explores these options and gives new and fully detailed rules for jousting, wrestling, Called Shots and a multitude of others. . . Fighter Feats: No class receives more feats than the Fighter and no book detailing new options for Fighters could be complete without expanding the capabilities of the class. Smite your enemies with the Reckless Charge, nail them at range with Sure Aim and disrupt enemy spellcasters with Combat Caster Defence. Tools of the Trade: Almost more than any other class, Fighters rely on good quality equipment to get their jobs done and The Quintessential Fighter opens up the possibilities for fighters, with a plethora of new weapons, mounts and equipment, all specifically designed for your Fighter to get the best results in battle. Fighting Styles: There are many character classes who profess to be expert in combat, but the true Fighter knows it is only he that can truly master weaponry. A complete new range of Fighting Styles are detailed, allowing any Fighter with perseverance and training to greatly enhance his combat capabilities. Tournaments & Duelling: Not all battles are fought in the wilderness or within dark dungeons. Fully detailed rules are presented allowing Fighters (and other classes, if they dare!) to take part in duels and tournaments, either for honour or pure monetary gain. Mercenaries: Everyone needs a little help now and again, and a Fighter is a true leader of men in combat. Fighters may now hire mercenaries and engage in larger battles against their enemies. The Open Mass Combat System: First presented as a cut-down version within Seas of Blood, The Quintessential Fighter introduces Mongoose Publishing's Open Mass Combat System, the OMCS. Fighters may now lead entire armies against their foes, directing their men as thousands of warriors crash together in bloody battle. Full rules cover multiple units, scouts, the effects of magic, sieges and much, much more. . . Strongholds: There comes a time when every Fighter desires to take a step back from the adventuring life and set about building the greatest fortress known to guard the frontier from marauding enemies and establish his own kingdom. Whilst Wizards skulk in their towers and Clerics waste their time on prayers in temple, the Fighter raises massive, impregnable castles designed to withstand any assault. The Quintessential Fighter provides full rules on how to construct and manage these great strongholds, allowing a Fighter to enter the world of politics, massed warfare and intrigue.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended with reservation.......2003-12-30

Let me start off by saying that if you're looking to add some variety and spice into the fighters in your campaign, this is the perfect book for you. Just about every page will give you new ideas for your game.

The feats, prestige classes and fighting styles are particularly useful. The feats round out a lot of fighter abilities, giving greater benefit to a high Dexterity than the Combat Expertise feat tree, without being too over-balanced.

The prestige classes are a bit of a mixed bag. Some, like the Legend prestige class, are highly useful while others, like the Berserker, seem like pale imitations of other, better defined classes. Still, even the Berserker description contains some abilities that might be interesting to work into a campaign with barbarians.

The fighting styles are a relatively new concept. Basically, you spend some XP and spend some time training, after meeting some prerequisites, and you learn special abilities based on a fighting style. From trick archery to archery from horseback, to fighting with two light weapons, to fighting with the double-bladed orc axe, there's something for just about everyone. Some would argue that the fighting styles are too powerful, but since by the time you've mastered the fifth and final level of a style you've spent 7500 XP, three months game time, quite a bit of gold and focussed your feats, skills and abilities in one direction, I think the cost weighs pretty evenly with the benefits.

The equipment section is pretty handy, particularly the section on black powder weapons that gets into a lot more detail than any other book I've seen. The damages on these weapons seem pretty high compared to their ranged-weapon counterparts, but the dangers of a misfired shell, coupled with the long loading time, balances this out. I particularly liked the addition of the magical weapon abilities for black powder weapons.

The OMCS, the mass combat system, seems pretty useful, although it does seem skewed towards creatures with many Hit Dice rather than those with actual combat ability. The system also doesn't take into account the difference in speed between units and how that could change the nature of combat. Still, it's a good basic framework to hang things off of.

The major problem is that the system gives too much benefit to PCs. A single character proficient with two weapons can, at 6th level, inflict nearly as much damage on a unit as an entire platoon of infantry of the same size as their target unit. That just doesn't seem quite right. Also, no credit is given for the effect that attacking from horseback would have on damage, defense and chance of striking one's opponent. All you get are extra hit points.

The book loses one star for the illustrations and story excerpts contained in the book. There are far too many cleavage-baring "chicks in chainmail" done in a simple line-drawing style. The stories, when they aren't directly offensive and misogynist, are just useless and rather drab, not doing anything but taking up space on the page.

The book loses another star for a lack of balance. Using this book, by 8th level I could create a fighter who, 30% of the time he strikes, inflicts quadruple normal damage with his attack, if he confirms his critical. That's just not a good thing, considering that his weapon, the flamberge, rolls 2d6 for damage.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best d20 book yet published.......2002-03-07

I am glad I discovered this book; it is exactly what the doctor ordered. This book is an homage to the "Complete _______'s Handbooks" of AD&D 2nd Edition fame. It's a very good read.

1st, the book introduces the concept of Character Concepts, which are similar to "kits" except less broken. Want to have your PC be of a certain background and not wait for prestige classes to do it? Then the concepts work wonderful.

2nd, the prestige classes are nice, especially the "Legend", which is meant for charcaters above 15th level. Gives your fighter power more in line with a wizard of the level.

3rd, the new feats and weapons help hone the book

4th, and perhaps best of all, there is a system for Mass Combat, where fighting units are assigned HP, making for streamlined epic battles...

4 out of 5 stars IPO - The Greatest Legal Creation of Wealth ..........2000-06-27

I first decided to check out this book after having read Kiyosaki's Rich Dad's Guide to Investing. In his book, Kiyosaki touched on being the Ultimate Investor i.e. the selling investor, the kind of investor who puts together businesses that the public crave for and would pay a premium for. The IPO is the Holy Grail for those want to make it big. In the words of a venture capitalist, the IPO vehicle is "The Greatest Legal Creation of Wealth in the History of the Planet".

Arkebauer's "Going Public" is an excellent primer for those just starting out in understanding IPOs. Using plain language and cutting out the gobbledygook, Arkebauer takes the reader through the different stages of an IPO - from assessing if an IPO is the way to go, to assembling the IPO team, the pre-IPO steps, the IPO process itself, and the post-IPO steps. In this edition, Arkebauer also introduces the latest method of raising capital via Internet Direct Public Offerings.

I found this book to be thorough and detailed enough to satisfy even those who are CEOs and who may need a quick crash course in IPOs. One very important lesson I learnt from this book is the need for any entrepreneur aspiring for IPO, to get prepared and started from day one. Going public is an extremely complicated and tedious process. The IPO process can be made easier if the aspiring entrepreneur plans early.

For those interested in reading further on IPOs, I recommend 2 other books - "The Complete Going Public Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Turn a Private Enterprise into a Publicly Traded Company" by Frederick Lipman, and "The Ernst & Young Guide to the IPO Value Journey" by Stephen Blowers et al.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptionally useful and detailed book........1999-08-13

This is the perfect starting book for young men and women thinking about getting involved with startups, even if as employees. An ideal book for use in the classroom. Going Public is not superficial; it probes deeply into SEC rules and regulations and explains in considerable detail the financial quagmire of the first few years. Probably the best text on the subject.

I had the privilege of reviewing this book in manuscript stage for the publisher, and was extremely impressed. This comprehensive guide to public offerings in the electronic era delivers on the promise of its title--and in clear, engaging style. It takes a practical, step-by-step approach to an extremely complex area. It's a must for any firm considering an IPO!
