"Where and how Dada began is almost as difficult to determine as Homer's birthplace," writes Hans Richter, who was associated with the movement from its early days. Here, through selections from key manifestos and other documents of the time, he records Dada's history, from its beginnings in wartime Zurich to its collapse in the Paris of the 1920s. Dada led on from Expressionism, Cubism, and Futurism, and in turn prepared the way for Surrealism. It was enlivened by bizarre and extravagant personalities, notably Tristan Tzara, Francis Picabia, Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Man Ray, whose contributions are fully discussed. The spirit of Dada reappeared in the 1960s in movements such as Pop Art, which are surveyed in the final section.

Takes a good look at the Dada artist's and their work. The author was involved in Dada and made many crucial Dada works. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is that it talks about the relationships between the people involved in Dada, but doesn't stray to far from what is important...the original works.

Hans Richter lived on the fringes of Zurich's Dada movement, and here offers a personal narrative of the Dada movement and its eventual successor, Surrealism. This was the first book I'd ever read on Dada and I found it quite sufficient -- all the personalities are introduced, and their motivations and how they came together are revealed. Richter is best in the earliest sections, while discussing the birth of the influential Cabaret Voltaire and how the First World War helped amplify Dada's influence in Europe. The book peters out a bit in later chapters, but is still a detailed look at the subject. If you are simply seeking an understanding of the movement, this book is a fast and entertaining read.

In the interest of re-appropriating dada, read this book on the origins of the movement in Zurich at the Cabaret Voltaire. The Hanover period is less than compelling except for the brilliant Kurt Schwitters. His attempt to gatecrash the Club in Zurich led to marginal friendships with the progenitors - he was perceived as too bourgeois - and Schwitters went on to non-fame in exile in Britain, snubbed by the international art intelligentsia, which still denigrates his late work. Most interesting role? Hugo Ball, the impresario of the Cabaret Voltaire who championed the idea of the gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) then dropped out to live in the Ticino in Tolstoi-esque self-induced poverty. Greatest sub-narrative? The battle for the ownership of dada by the hangers-on.

Good for reading in the car........1999-05-29

I bought this book in Flordia because I had to go to a wedding, and there wasn't much to do that I enjoyed. The photo plates are extra good because I had never seen the paintings that had to do with the men and women of Dada. There are many good photographs of the Dada people too. The events in the book are inscribed well, and the excitement is carried over into your very home and arms.

The Beginning of My Love Affair with Duchamp.......2001-05-03

This book is highly recommended. The information available within the covers is something that I could not find in my art history book. The reader will gain insight into Duchamp's views and his thoughts leading up to his decisions to take the road, artistically, that he did. Wonderfully written, glorious color photos and beautiful insights, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to add to a library.

Losing something in the translation was never so amusing.......2001-10-11

Readers who love language and idioms will enjoy this book immensely. But I also think it is valuable as a culture lesson. Idioms translated literally do not make sense. They lose their metaphor and their nuance. But, when looked at closely, we realize they are kissing cousins to our own expressions. The title idiom can be compared to "Haste makes waste". We're all the same, we're just separated by language. It's a light read, but a fun one, and it's one you'll want to loan out to friends, but make sure you get it back!

I love this book..........2003-06-27

Another wonderful quilting book by one of my favorite authors! Nancy J. Martin brings a fresh approach to using reproduction fabrics in this book. Her directions are clear and precise and the color photos are excellent. I also enjoyed the history of 30's fabrics she includes.

The patterns themselves are not vintage - this is clearly stated right on the back of the book which says "Features vintage-style fabrics in fresh, fun quilt designs". The designs ARE wonderful, but it's the fabrics that take center stage in these quilts.

So if you're eager to use some of those wonderful reproduction fabrics so abundant in the quilt shops these days but weren't sure how to use them to their best advantage, this is a wonderful book to own! Like me, I'll bet you'll have a hard time choosing which quilt to make first. Each is a gem!

No Authenticity Here.......2002-07-09

I purchased this book, assuming the title meant that authentic 1930's quilt patterns would be included, using reproduction fabrics. Instead, the designs had no period authenticity whatsoever! Each contributor simply used 1930's repro fabrics to make a quilt of any-old-style. This book was totally useless to me!
