The best way to teach drawing I've ever seen!.......2005-08-20
I was thrilled when I received my copies of Steve Barr's books. His approach to teaching the art of drawing cartoons is fantastic! From the beginning, he points out that there are "No Rules!". I love this approach for teaching children, and also for "big kids" like myself! People of all ages will learn a lot from his books, and have so much fun along the way. Each book shows step-by-step ways to accomplish adorable cartoons. I highly recommend this book to parents with budding artists, and to schools for their art classes!

Rather than try to compete with the up-to-the-minute product information on Web sites or the encyclopedic brilliance of Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs, the authors of TechTV's Upgrading Your PC fill a separate niche. They explain to their readers, in an eminently readable and clear fashion, how to think about upgrading their Intel-compatible personal computers and then set about doing it. For starters, they acknowledge that upgrading isn't always the best thing to do with an elderly machine (the most cost-effective thing, they note, is often retirement and replacement). Continuing on the assumption that you want to improve some aspect of your machine, they provide the information you need to choose and install an after-market part. In their coverage of graphics cards, for example, the authors provide lots of technology-specific information (about the different kinds of AGP ports, among other things) while leaving recommendations of specific products to other publications. It's a winning strategy, and they apply it to CPUs, motherboard chipsets, and other upgradeable system pieces.
On top of that kind of coverage, the authors provide general technical advice that will come in handy regardless of the product you're installing. In the section on sound cards, they note that if you have sound circuitry on your motherboard and want to upgrade it, you're not out of luck: most BIOSes let you disable the built-in sound card so you can put in a replacement. In their chapter on RAM, they explain how to make sure you order the right thing from your supplier. Throughout, they frequently make reference to diagnostic utilities and other helpful software on the Internet. It says Upgrading Your PC, but actually it is a lot more than that. I have bought this and PC Hardware in a Nutshell and you can right away tell the difference. Both books are great but this one would be more helpful for beginners like me. If you are just starting to get interested on how that little machine of yours work, then this is the book for you.
It teaches you the fundamentals, as well as showing you around inside the PC itself with its labeled photographs. You learn a lot more than Upgrading your PC; you will get familiarized with how each component inside your PC works without getting confused with PC language jargon. Actually, when you encounter jargon in a section of the book, they will explain what it means exactly in words you can understand.
The book is very simple so I don't think people that are familiar with their PC's would find this helpful. For beginners, this would prevent you from getting frustated with those hard-bound, 5" thick PC books. You can get those later after you get the main idea of how your pc works, how you get around your pc, how you upgrade it, and perhaps how to build one; which is what this book will help you know.
If you want to know more than what this book covers, get PC Hardware in a Nutshell. Great stuff!

A Very Nice Keepsake for Fans of the Film.......2004-08-25
This book is something I remember fondly from my childhood, much like the movie of the same name. "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was the first and in my opinion best of the Peanuts movies. Back before VHS, if you wanted to revisit "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", this was faster than waiting for it to come on TV again. The book has a very well-written text version of the story, but the highlight is the cel art from the film used to illustrate this book. (Despite having drawn the cover, Charles Schulz didn't illustrate this book.) It gives a nice look at the in-between period of Bill Melendez' work, shaking off the uncertain qualities of the early TV specials, but not quite as poished as the late 70's-1980's shows looked.
Be sure you know what you're buying..........2002-01-22
A cute adaptation of the classic "Peanuts" movie, but be sure you know what you're buying before you click on "order." I was under the impression that it was a strip-format adaptation of the film, when in fact it is more of a children's storybook, with pictures and text separate from each other. Not to point fingers, I should have been paying closer attention. Mea culpa.
That said, it is a good adaptation, and I'm not at all sorry I picked it up. If I ever have kids, I'm going to read this to 'em until they're sick of it.

Selections from the Movie with Beautiful Color Illustrations.......2001-06-21
On the large pages, the 100 + color illustrations of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, and Snoopy look wonderful. The reproduction quality is very fine, and you almost feel like you are holding an art book rather than a strip. This book is a condensation of the story from the 1969 movie, and reissues an earlier book by the same name. You will find the story transitions a little abrupt here, so it is almost like reading several disconnected strips. I graded the book down accordingly.
Charlie Brown opens the book about to pitch. The last time the team won was when he could not play. He's a little discouraged. The pitcher's mound is covered with dandelions. They cannot agree on the signals. Early on, he gets hit by a line drive. No one takes his misery very seriously. Lucy suggests that he can get by with second or third aid. He doesn't need first aid.
Charlie Brown sees himself as a loser, and is getting depressed. While trying to encourage him, Linus beats him at tic-tac-toe.
Linus encourages Charlie Brown to enter the class spelling bee. Charlie Brown assumes the worst, and has a hard time getting his hand up. Finally, he signs up. Lots of practice follows. Charlie Brown wins! Now, he has to compete with the whole school. He's scared of failure. Linus and Snoopy help him study, and "i before e except after c" becomes a big help due to the little ditty he's learned to help remember the rule.
Soon Charlie Brown is on his way to the national competition. More study follows. Linus makes the ultimate sacrifice and gives Charlie Brown his blanket for good luck. Soon Linus is having withdrawal pains. Linus and Snoopy follow Charlie Brown to get the blanket back and to cheer on Charlie Brown.
The rest of the story deals with the competition and its aftermath. The book ends with a classic scene involving Charlie Brown and Lucy that has a predictable result.
After you read this story, I suggest you think about what your definition of being a winner is. For some people, the standard is so high that they can never meet it. For the happiest people, the standard is low enough that reasonable effort ensures good results. Learn from Charlie Brown's example here.

I remember this book fondly!.......2001-06-08
Of all the books I checked out of teh library, this was one that i remember well. I was even more thrilled when I found that the book was based on a movie.
It's just another typical day for Good Ol' Charlie Brown. Everything seems to be going bad for him: he can't fly that kite of his, and his team loses the first baseball game of the season. Going to Lucy for Psychiatric help proves another fatal move. Linus tells Charlie Brown that my'be he should enter the school Spelling Bee. Charlie Brown feels confident, while Lucy and some of the other girls taunt him saying how he'll "just make a fool out of himself." However, Charlie Proves them all wrong, and then wins a chance to go to New York to take part in the "International Eliminations Spelling Bee-2nd Grade." Charlie is beside himself, but with Snoopy and Linus looking on, can he succeed even further? The artwork is actually still images from the film, with some dialogue made simpler and some scenes omitted to make the story move at a better pace. Several musical montages in the movie are also omitted. Still, this is a book I'd recommend for all elementary school students. Almost every student should know and read the "Peanuts" comics. I still read them to this day.

All the stories are basically the same.......2006-06-19
This book contains dozens of short stories about mistakes that businesses supposedly made (some of which are urban legends). Many of the stories are the same thing over and over again. How many different ways are there for companies to screw up account balances? At least ten, if you believe this book. One example would have been enough--the other nine were just repeats.
Another thing that annoyed me was that the author does not know the proper meaning of the word "ironic."
It gets a second star from me because a few of the stories are interesting and entertaining.

As a high school student I am usually given the task of reading books in class as a required grade and to give small examples of my reading of the day. Since I like technology and have somewhat of an understanding about it, for this review I chose to read the book titled Dear Valued Customer, YOU ARE A LOSER. I chose this book because I felt like reading a book that was somewhat light and upbeat. It was also an easy read and kept me entertained in every small story.
Just like me I think people that are into computers and other forms of modern technology would like to read this book and read up on other people's mishaps. This book is broken into different sections for each kind of technical error or mishap witch is great. But since there is no order plot to the book you can freely read any story that you would like. One thing that I learned and that most people should get from this book, is that just because technology is here to make our lives better not everything is going to work on its own and most of the time you have to give instruction properly to the device and read and follow all rules and directions and take care of your computers and other devices.
Great information security awareness tool.......2005-03-19
This fun little book offers an antidote to those misguided people who, I'm told, think information security is dreadfully boring. Its 315 small-format pages contain a collection of entertaining stories about "computer errors" and other IT-related glitches, drawn mostly from the general and IT press.
Each story has been verified to some extent by the author although few sources are fully referenced. Most stories are less than 300 words long, just long enough to get the gist.
There are numerous examples of information security breaches in the book, especially if one accepts that most data-entry errors are either the result of untrained, incompetent or careless computer users, or inadequate data entry validation. A typical example is the one about a Salomon Smith Barney trader who lent on the `instant sell' button on his keyboard one day and inadvertently placed on sale 14,500 French government bond contracts worth a staggering $1.3bn at a low price. Salomon managed to cancel the sell order but not until 10,000 contracts had been struck, leaving the company nursing a huge loss. I'd have been willing to bet, before the event, that Salomon's risk assessments and contingency plans did not even consider this kind of event. Do yours?
Creative information security awareness managers, trainers and presenters use news stories like these to liven-up their training sessions, case studies, seminars, newsletters and intranet websites. Even people who hate IT enjoy the opportunity to laugh at the unfortunate victims of computer spoofs, stunts, accidents and failures. The trick is to use this kind of material to engage the audience and, while you have their attention, explain the underlying information security risk and control issues.
At less than ten bucks, it's a genuine bargain.

I picked up this book after hearing about it on the radio, and I'm glad I did. Being a heavy computer user, I have heard about some of the stories detailed in this book, but most of them just made my jaw drop as to how modern technology can screw up either by itself or by a human hitting the wrong button. So this book is highly recommended, but don't give it to any of your luddite friends. They'll use it to prove you right.

Nicely Produced Gift Book.......2004-03-29
If you're a big fan of the Speilberg film, this is a nice, pocket-sized, hardcover gift book. Measuring about 5" x 7.5", the 80 pages are mostly devoted to David James' excellent black and white still photos taken during production. A suitably earnest three page introduction by Speilberg seeks to remind us of the continuing relevance of the Holocaust and Schindler's story. Tacked on the end are five pages of production notes (these are "story" of the production, and are issued as part of the general press kit when a film is released). Released to coincide with the ten-year anniversary of the film's release, James' photos are very good, and quite evocative (even though it's only a movie!).

Although I have not read this book, I was introduced to it on author Dan Brown's website. He has written a book entitled
"Angels&Demons" and it deals quite a bit with ambigrams. If you are intrested in ambigrams(as well as history, the Vatican, the Illuminati, or any thriller story) I would strongly recomend that you read "Angels&Demons".
