Campbell, Nietzche, And Kant Are Rolling In Their Graves!.......1999-07-01
Never has one individual been so willing to question the so-called "norms" of modern society than Tom Wilson and in "1-800-Ziggy", he boldly treads upon new intellectual territory few philosophers have previously even considered debating. After reading this book, I began to question my existence and everything I was ever taught in college Philosophy courses. This is a powerful handbook for those who want to discover the true meaning of our existence and the world surrounding us. Accessible to everyone from so-called everyday people and world-renowned philosophers, this book will rock your world!
Ziggy Rocks!.......1999-06-19

Book Description
Between the classic films of Walt Disney in the 1940s and the televised cartoon revolution of the 1960s was a critical period in the history of animation. Amid Amidi, of the influential Animation Blast magazine and CartoonBrew blog, charts the evolution of the modern style in animation, which largely discarded the "lifelike" aesthetic for a more graphic and often abstract approach. Abundantly found in commercials, industrial and educational films, fair and expo infotainment, and more, this quickly popular cartoon modernism shared much with the painting and graphic design movements of the era. Showcasing hundreds of rare and forgotten sketches, model boards, cels, and film stills, Cartoon Modern is a thoroughly researched, eye-popping, and delightful account of a vital decade of animation design.
Customer Reviews:
Cool, Fun and Essential.......2007-07-17
This book covers a vital an oft-neglected period in animation history. When I first laid eyes upon it, in a bookstore, I think I audibly gasped. It is that beautiful. Do not hesitate to purchase this book, which incidentally, won the Theatre Library Association Award for outstanding book in the area of film or broadcasting. Hopefully, there'll be a sequel.
Superlative.......2007-06-08
If you're an animation buff, you won't want to miss Amid Amidi's "Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in 1950s Animation". Lushly paged, and densely packed with generous, colorful, brightly saturated illustrations, "Cartoon Modern" is the cel animation cartoon fan's dream come true - the kind of volume you'd find in a favorites bin in a dream and try to take out into the waking world with you! Amid Amidi is clearly another one of us toon fangeeks: he eagerly sifts through tons of studio, production and biographical information but doesn't skimp on small details only another fangeek would enjoy - intriguing factoids and behind-the-scenes animator gossip relevant to the period abound throughout this thick, heavy book. You will never tire of the clippings, sketches, layouts, articles and character designs. Far from limited to the gorgeous coffeetable book it resembles - don't be fooled by its size and stylish appearance! - "Cartoon Modern" is an authoritative tour of one of American animation's most important creative periods. I personally look forward to more animation books from Amidi, and I hope he will someday take a literary look at the animation of the classic, cartoon modern-influenced 1969-1976 period of PBS's "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company". As a generous portion of "Cartoon Modern" concerns the works of animators John and Faith Hubley, and the Hubley Studios generated a good 40-50% of the animation for both shows, such a book may not be far from the realm of possibility. Superlative.
More than Disney...........2007-04-19
We had forgotten how much treasured animation was created during this very stylistic era in film history.
Most importantly, the book deserves a publishing prize simply for the design of the text. Absolutely beautiful... flawlessly designed... with quality binding and printing that should last for a century to come.
We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and class within these covers, and we are pleased to highly recommend this text for the most discriminating animation libraries.
Cartoon Modern.......2007-03-19
Absolutly wonderful visuals, with OK text. Text suffers from almost no acknowlegement of foriegn animation that preceded and drove the U.S. animation design, but still very informationl and a good referenxce book.
Great Book.......2007-01-22
I think this book is a nice purchase. It has great visual reference for cartoon styles and is really easy to brouse through as each "animation studio" has its own chapter. Two other people from my work purchased the book as well, and seem to like it too!

Customer Reviews:
You must get this book!.......2003-08-13
This wonderful collection of Peanuts cartoons was originally published in 1961. It is a collection of four-panel strips that were originally published between 1958 and 1961. Because of the date, Rerun isn't here, but just about all of the other Peanuts stars are - Lucy, Violet, Schroeder, and even baby Sally.
As with all of the Peanuts books, this one is absolutely great; a surefire hit with your young ones, and you young-at-hearts. One of the greatest gags running through the book is the war between Linus and Snoopy, where Snoopy's attempts to steal Linus's blanket always leads to hilarity. And, speaking of hilarity, you simply must see Snoopy putting a boxing glove on his nose, and out boxing everyone in the Peanuts gang until he faces that most ornery of Peanuts - Lucy!
This is an absolutely wonderful book, one that that my children love, and that I do too. If you can get this book, then do so, because it's great!
Great content, cheap book.......2002-12-06
This small paperback reprint volume of vintage Peanuts Sunday strips is essential for the Peanuts fan but such a cheap reprint format does not do justice to the strips. The panels are reproduced on cheap, pulp-like paper much smaller than the original newspaper version and with very little spine margin. The strips, of course, are printed here in black-&-white. I'd had been willing to pay ... for a large-size softcover with decent paper and the strips in color. I'd been glad to pay [more money] for the thing in hardcover. Oh, well, it's worth having like it is for the strips themselves but I can remember when a paperback book of this size and production quality sold for 50 cents at the corner drug store. I'd give it 5 stars if the physical quality of the book were in keeping with its illustrious content.
What Can Be More Delightful than the Laughter from PEANUTS?.......2001-01-29
Back when this was originally published, Peanuts comic books had books exclusively for Sunday cartoons since they took up an entire page. This book features some of the early Peanuts Sunday features from 1958 to 1961.
Snoopy would go through his charades- like a boxer with 1 glove on his nose! Sally was a new character here and just a baby. Linus wasn't yet old enough for school and demanded an education. Yet, he proves to have an impressive imagination as he sees images of the apostle Paul in the clouds. Pig Pen comes to Violet's birthday party just as sloppy as he always is- but at least his present is clean! Charlie Brown tries sleeping under the stars but gets scared when he hears a howling sound (Snoopy, of course!). Of course, he gets no respect as baseball manager and gets laughed at by all the kids. It's little wonder he gets irked when the radio announcer asks: "What can be more delightful than the sound of laughter from little children?"! Linus and Lucy both beg their dad to bring them little presents on the way home but Mr. Van Pelt is only taking his car out of the garage to be washed! Lucy asks Schroeder: "If Beethoven was so great, how come he didn't get to be king?". She also tries on one of Charlie Brown's crooked striped T-shirts for a laugh- but this time, the joke's on her! And most of the Peanuts gang is gathered together for the Christmas paegant. Linus forgets his lines, but Lucy knows the right cure!
You're a fanatic and you're losing your mind, Charlie Brown!.......2000-11-30
Remember when Snoopy was just a crazy dog? No tennis playing, no Second World War scenes... Remember the old gang? In those days, there were only Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, PigPen and those two little snakes, Patty and Violet. This 130 page collection of strips from 1958 to 1961 offers enough drama and laughing for several days!
For some reason, I find the old peanuts strips more interesting, touching, fun and heart breaking than the latest ones. And this book showed me why. Listen to the kids insult, criticize, philosophize and make sarcasms of each other. Look at the personal dispute of Snoopy against Linus's blanket, see Sally as a little baby and Charlie Brown's kite explode in the air (yes, explode :) This has to be the funniest and most complete collection of blanket-chasing and kite-flying episodes. Thank you, Sparky!
Must buy--extremely funny.......2000-03-26
Peanuts Every Sunday contains Sunday strips from 1958 through 1961. Sally Brown makes her first appearance, as Charlie Brown eagerly awaits her birth then shows her off. There are many hilarious strips featuring Snoopy stealing Linus' blanket. Also, Snoopy puts a boxing glove on his nose and fights Linus, Charlie Brown, and finally Lucy. This is one of the funniest Peanuts books under the Peanuts Classics labeling from Henry Holt & Co. For those who love the blanket stealing strips, this contains many versions that make you laugh out loud. The book is worth it for that reason alone.

Charlie Brown.......2007-03-28
"Who Do You Think You Are Charlie Brown?" is a Fawcett Crest selection of Peanuts Sunday strips from 1958-1961. It's pretty decent. I'm used to reading Peanuts daily collections, and the humour seems to be a little different in the Sunday format. Seems to be a lot more about buildup and about character. There's even a few gags that run over a couple of Sundays, (like the "Rain Stopper" story with Linus). It's worth reading if you're in the mood for it.
The first book I ever owned.......2005-05-22
My dad bought this for me for my 4th birthday from a W.T. Grant's Drugstore in 1968. I still have a yellowed copy of it and it still means a lot to me.
The cartoons in this book are appaarently from the later 1950s, when Schulz was getting into his stride as a satirist (albeit a timeless one unlike Al Capp). One comic has Linus making a sand castle and the rain destroying it, while Linus comments that there must be some subtle message here. (Schulz himself admits to later being freaked out over this one). Another has Linus being able to stop the rain by yelling "rain rain go away-come again some other day" and thinking he may be a prophet.
Get it, laugh, and think.

A great collection of classic Peanuts Sunday comics.......2007-07-12
You're My Hero, Charlie Brown! (made up of selected cartoons from Peanuts Every Sunday Vol. 2) is a really good collection of fairly early Peanuts comics, each of them of the longer Sunday variety. Sally is basically just a toddler in these cartoons (Linus even teaches her how to hold a blanket and suck her thumb), Snoopy is constantly trying to take Linus' blanket away from him, and Lucy is constantly asserting her dominance over Linus. Despite the title, you won't find a lot of good days in the life of Charlie Brown in this collection. He can never get his kite up in the air, he's ridiculed as wishy-washy, and he always feels as if no one really likes him. I think there's actually more of Linus than any other character in this book, though (which is fine with me because Linus was always the character I could identify with the most). Not only do you get to see his struggles to remember his part in the Christmas program, you also get to witness his short-lived boxing career, which was less than spectacular thanks to Snoopy and Lucy, who square off against one another at one point in a real marquee matchup. Snoopy, in case you're wondering, fought with one glove strapped around his snout.
My favorite cartoon in this collection features Lucy putting on one of Charlie Brown's shirts and running around imitating him, only to get a dose of her own medicine when he shows up and makes her the butt of the joke. In another one, Linus gets so mad at his sister that "she hath caused me to rend my garment" (Linus was always good with the Bible quotes). You're My Hero, Charlie Brown! has to be one of the better of the vintage paperback editions of Peanuts comics.

The 3D Studio Max application is big and has great depth, but most of the available books that cover it are either of the all-encompassing "bible" type--which are great reference books, but often lack in-depth tutorials--or the getting-started type--which are designed to orient the new user without inducing a bad case of "featuritis overwhelmus."
3D Studio Max 3 Magic nicely fills the need of the intermediate or advanced user. It assumes the reader is already familiar with Max, has been working with it for some time, and is ready to move on to the next level.
Featuring 20 chapters written by nine top 3D Studio Max artists, 3D Studio Max 3 Magic is designed to be read, used, and worked through, but not necessarily in sequence. Each chapter is an independent tutorial, demonstrating a specific technique, and each is well written and lavishly illustrated. Every page is in color, helping to make the book a pleasure to flip through and each chapter easy to work through.
A good case in point is chapter 6, "Lighting Effects: Rim Lighting and Diffuse Glow." The goal of this chapter is to simulate the lighting that falls on a fetus in a womb (or at least what we expect it to look like). An image of the final render is at the head of the chapter, and the translucency and highlights of the fetus are worthy of study. The text and pictures that follow describe not only the modeling of the baby, but also the process of achieving the desired look through lighting, materials, or both.
Some of the examples seem a little simplistic, but they demonstrate complex techniques. Chapter 8, for example, creates automated dust trails by using a particle system and expressions. The example is of a tank traveling through the desert, but the tank is simply a few polygons without textures and the desert barely looks like sand. However, the goal of the chapter is to teach the use of particles and expressions for automating the animation of the dust cloud that follows the tank, not to teach how to model and texture a realistic military vehicle.
The accompanying CD-ROM includes all the project and source files for each chapter; many of these files contain rendered movies for viewing the animation. In addition, four bonus chapters on the CD-ROM cover topics like creating a tidal wave and growing a block of ice around an object.
3D Studio Max 3 Magic is a quality workbook for an intermediate or advanced user. The layout is clean, the illustrations are plentiful, and the art direction of the book on the whole is a pleasure to look at and use. This book is a nice addition to any Max user's shelf. --Mike Caputo

This book has 25 can't miss recipes for getting stunning effects from 3D Studio MAX.3, cooked up by some of the best CG chefs in the world.
Customer Reviews:
This is a pleasingly easy to follow book.......2000-11-22
I'm thoroughly happy with this book as it is very easy to understand and follow. However, one or two of the tutorials are very dodgy indeed. Like for example the Tidal Wave effect on the CD is not very good, the wave looks extremely fake and out of place. But apart from that, the rest of this book is very well made and presented. A must buy for any intermediate users.
The 3dMax Goodie Bag!.......2000-09-22
One of the big gripes I hear from people using tutorial books for software is that they are linear. (They make you start with the apple, then they let you model the tree, and somewhere way down they road you get to model Johnny Appleseed.) This is not the case with 3dMax 3 Magic. Each chapter introduces a new technique on a new tutorial model. In one chapter you are shown how to make realistic looking water surfaces, in another you are being shown how to make the best looking car paint I've ever seen. Like the title of this review states, this is a goodie bag. It is for the Intermediate to Advanced user who wants a "How To" on some of the things Max 3 has to offer. The Authors of the book assume that you atleast know your way around the application. I'm happy to have this book on my shelf, right next to my computer!
Great effects.......2000-08-05
This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to enhance their abilities with 3D Studio MAX 3. It goes beyond the MAX tutorials to show you how to create effects that obviously took some of these professionals a long time to perfect. The car paint material chapter alone is worth the price of the book. My only complaint is that it's too short.
Very useful book for advanced users to learn more.......2000-08-03
This books is based on tutorials, so it's easy to read and understand. In the end of each chapter there is a "variation" and "plugins" section which help you in using techniques featured in the chapter in other situations and ways and help you selecting plugins to use to make it even more realistic!(giving you a very detailed plugins list). Most of the tutorials are very useful both for advanced and basic users, but some tutorials look very unrealistic where the head title is "How to create a REALISTIC....". I've been using 3d studio and MAX for 7 years now, spending most of my freetime in MAX and still i found this book very useful and I would recommend it for all users except the very basic users. BUY IT
Coffee Table Book of Max Manuals.......2000-06-28
This book is excellent for anyone who already has a working knowledge of Max3. The 20 effects covered in the book are clearly explained with lots of pictures, all of which could easily be used to give your demo reel or project extra flair. The whole book is printed in color. My favorite lessons are the Moving Crowd, Glowing Trail, and Realistic Eyeball (best eyeball tutorial I've seen). Each lesson also contains techniques that could be applied elsewhere. Not a comprehensive manual, more like a bag of tricks. Very good!

Book Description
Introducing the beginner to the concept of MIDI.
Customer Reviews:
First time MIDI user..........2005-09-23
Midi for the Technophobe is an excellent book for newbies. It gives a very broad perspective of what is Midi and how to use it. Those who want the technical aspects of Midi need to look elsewhere but for those you just want to learn the basics and get in there and start creating, this is the book for you.
Not what I expected.......2005-09-15
This book provided only a minimal amount of information about midi programming and failed to explain most midi terms and how they define how midi works in a systematic way, e.g., it doesn't explain how system and control change fit into programming what you might want to do with midi. In other words, it did not focus on midi routing that much in any detailed or easy-to-understand way. I was hoping to see something like a tree diagram, instead, the author went on to describe things like envelope shaping, digital audio and effects processing.
On the whole this book would probably be too rudimentary for anyone who already owns a synthesizer or music software, as these modern day products help you to tweak sounds through user friendly programming within each device. However, I did pick up a few tips.
Great for Beginners.......2003-05-13
I always knew what midi was, but never played around with it until recently. I relaized I was in over my head and required assistance. This book starts with the basics and builds from there. Midi is complex and intimidateing. The author does a great job by reiterating key points, resulting in greater comprhension and understanding. If you are starting out and want to understand midi and basic synthesis, this is a great book.
Perfect first MIDI read..........2002-05-05
I've been a musician most of my life, and a computer and software engineer for over 15 years. I am NOT a technophobe, yet MIDI hasn't come easy for me. It is the only "science" that has given me fits... until now.
Mr. White's 'MIDI for the Technophobe' explains in simple terms how to make MIDI work. After the first 2 chapters I had a fundamental understanding of the connectivity & interaction between MIDI components.
It is a slow read at first, but it has to be to clarify what other books assume their readers can figure out for themselves. That's what makes this book so excellent for first-time and beginning MIDI users - it doesn't bury you in buzzwords, it buries you in visualizations on how it all connects and makes music.
A great book for the analog musician who wants to add MIDI synths, percussions and orchestrations to their recordings!
At Last.......1999-12-09
After reading about 20 books on the subject of MIDI and music technology, I found that "Midi for the Technophobe" is the only one written so that anyone can understand what is being explained. It is written as if the reader has absolutely no prior experience in the music technology field and explains each little word with care.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2000-05-28
This just as the "Duengeon Master's Screen" is helpful, quick and easy to use. Just prop it up and you're to go anytime a priest question arrives. It also helps you keep the dice from going all over the place when you roll.
Book Description
More and more professionals are forming limited liability companies (LLCs) to take advantage of their many benefits. LLCs provide partners with a corporate-style liability shield, protecting them from personal responsibility for the company's debts and obligations.
This book explains LLCs in detail, helping readers to fully understand what an LLC is and how they can benefit from one.
Topics covered in this book include: What is an LLC? What types of companies can become an LLC? Advantages and disadvantages of forming an LLC, converting an existing busines to an LLC, the basics of LLC membership, the importance of an opening agreement, conducting and managing an LLC, and special tax considerations.
Customer Reviews:
Okay but lacking........2005-02-10
This book had a lot of helpful facts about LLCs, but no guidance really in forming one, or whether you should form an LLC or corporation. The state-by-state appendix of laws and contact information hadn't been updated since 1997. The sample operating agreement was not on the disk, so you couldn't tailor it and use it for your company.
Could be better.......2005-02-01
The book was decent, although a bit generic - no particular insights provided. The discussion of the terms of an LLC Operating Agreement could be a lot more detailed.
A highly recommended resource for the novice entrepreneur.......2003-08-07
Now in a completely updated third edition, How To Form And Operate A Limited Liability Company: A Do-It-Yourself Guide by Gregory C. Damman is a straightforward, "user friendly" instructional guide for taking full advantage of the benefits of a limited liability company (LLC), which protects company partners from personal responsibility for the company's debts and obligations. Introductory basics are accessibly presented concerning what types of companies can become an LLC; the advantages and disadvantages of forming an LLC; converting a business into an LLC; tax considerations, and much, much more are all knowledgeably presented in a meticulous and highly accessible manner. An accompanying CD-ROM of forms and samples enhances this highly recommended basic resource for the novice entrepreneur.
