5 out of 5 stars Historical Costume collection..........2002-01-19

Colored and black & white plates from the historical dress collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. William Collins, 1984. 8 1/2x11 in. softcover. Many plates are full-page and color, and high-quality paper was used. Construction details and historical annotations are provided. Discussion of the fashion background of each piece is provided.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful gowns, wonderful pictures, not enough detail..........2001-05-18

100 years of Fashion was an excellent read for the more scholarly-minded costumer in need of an accurate source book for their historical costuming. Although it provided plenty of close up pictures and trim details about the garments profiled in the book, it didn't cover sufficient enough details about the garment's construction for one to reconstruct a replica from this book alone. I highly suggest owning this book as an addition to one's library of period sources for research, but if you need a book on how to actually construct a period garment, I suggest using a Janet Arnold book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book..........2000-07-20

I was very pleased with this book. It is all about the costume (dress) collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The book shows both color and black and white photos of virtually every costume on display with detailed captions (a hole section is nothing but photos and descriptions of the collection). The photos are amazing. The book covers the years in which the garments were made as well as the history surrounding each item. It is one of the most accurate references you can find on historical costume. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2006-12-16

I have been thinking the dogs give us wonderful delights such as visual, audio, tactile, thermal, and even spiritual delights. I love this book with the abundant and attractive scenes I could appreciate the deep emotional affections created by human and the lovely dogs. I think the book price is so reasonable compare with the contents of the book.
I am treasuring this book as the one of coffee table books in my study.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2005-08-30

Truly a wonderful book; especially when ordered with your own book cover. It makes a very memorable and most surprising gift. Anyone with a dog will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Dog Photo Book.......2005-08-30

We purchased this book as a Christmas present for a dog-owner niece. We are pleased with the content and feel it will make a great coffee table book in a dog-lover's home.

5 out of 5 stars FURRY LOVE.......2005-08-15

Anyone whe believes that DOG spelled backwards is not just a happy coincidence will love these photo's.Like many, I have the feeling that dogs are spiritual beings, much like ourselves. The only unaswerable question is this;were dogs put on this planet for our companionship and benefit of is it the other way around.
Either way these photo's show what dog worshippers everywhere already know. That dogs are sentient being with their own individual personalities.

5 out of 5 stars Super book, great photos!.......2005-08-05

Another Great job..just like your book, Cats 24/7, a wonderful book with superb photos, and I really like the idea of owners personalizing the book with a cover photo of their own pet!

This is a wonderful manga series, probably the best I've ever read.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful..........2003-06-10

This manga is interesting, really long, and so beautiful. The drawings are elegent and kind of dream like. You wouldn't think they would work as well with this kind of story as they do. I highly reccommend this volume for all manga fans.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this more than five stars!.......2003-05-23

Newtype and Animage are my favorite anime mags, and now I get to read the amazing FSS manga that appeared in them! For years I stared at the pictures and tried to imagine what they were saying to each other...well, not any more. Now I get to read about the adventures of the Headliners, Fatimas, and the Emperor, all in English!

This is a must for any manga collector to have, serious or not! You won't regret it!

    5 out of 5 stars Finally---It has arrived!.......2003-03-07

I have been purchasing Newtype for years, and have always wanted to read The Five Star Stories. But I am just learning to read Japanese, so it was slow going (when it went at all.) But now, thanks to the wonderful people who printed this English language version, I can now read the story that I have admired for so long!

The art is superb, the story is exciting, and the characters draw you in and hold you there. I like how Mamoru Nagano has mixed the mythology of various countries and combined them with the technological driven dreams of our time. He has put an interesting spin on a cliche'd situation, and that is great! Kudos to you!

It may be hard to understand at first, but once you get into it, it's great!

I would love to be able to describe the plot to you, but I'm not sure I can remember that much of it. That's not to say that it lacks a plot--my memory is just incredibly bad.

Anyway, try it for yourself! The books are relatively cheap (at least where I bought them, so that's a plus.

Terrific art, gripping story, entrancing characters, and mythology all together in a reasonably priced package? What more encouragement do you need?

5 out of 5 stars Two young girls embark on a backyard adventure.......2001-11-05

Jane and her cousin Madison are two young girls who embark on a backyard adventure as they try to answer the night sky's greatest challenge -- numbering the stars in the sky. Karen Fulton's artwork fully complements Marky Allen's gentle and entertaining picturebook story. There Are 508 Stars In The Sky is enthusiastically recommended reading for any child who has ever gazed with wonder at the stars in the heavens and wondered the same thing as Jane and Madison!

5 out of 5 stars Marky Allen is a new Dr. Seuss.......2001-08-21

I read this book and could not put it down. The rhythm and rhyme reminds of DR Seuss Marky Allen is a new DR. Seuss! The words in the book are very easy to understand. This is a book for a child who is learning to read. He or she will be able to read the book alone and understand it easily. The book shows that children have amazing fantacy and they can do anything such as count the stars in the sky. The pictures are happy and bright. As a teacher this is a book I will highly recomend to parents. This is also a book for children who find reading hard, the fantacy in this book will make them keep on reading. Finally this is a book for children with learning disabilities the combination that it is easy to understand with the bright pictures and colors will make the children to use their imagination and fantacy and teach them an excellent habit. The habit to read.

My mom knows the author and he gave it to me. He even autographed it for me. I read it over and over and can imagine I am one of the cousins. I always wanted a sister or girl cousin my age. It would be really fun to try to count all the stars at night and lay there looking up and just having fun like the girls in the book. I really like it and would recommend it to my friends.

These original cartoons explore the lighter side of architecture, design and the construction industry. From the Far Side to Dilbert and from lawyer jokes to political humour, we have always been able to have a laugh at each other, ourselves and our professions. However, the design community has never really had a cartoon to call its own....until now!

The cartoons cover all members of the construction industry and the book is irreverent in its wit. Clearly composed by someone who has been in the business for many years Bynum's observations demonstrate an extensive understanding of the entire business, without being one sided or vitriolic.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work.......2005-10-04

My wife bought a used copy of this book for me.....she wasn't sure if I would like it but since it was related to architecture, she thought she would take a chance...She was right on. It has a fresh take on a lot of the issues in the design and construction world. The author is not afraid to take on all disciplines and he is very successful. Some are a little "Far-Side-ish" but there is a lot of insight in the humor. And the drawings are really well done. I loved it. If you aren't sure this is for you, the author has an [...] website you can use for a test drive. My recommendation: This is a good book to have.

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Creativity!.......2003-07-31

I laughed and laughed! These cartoons are histerical! Every person who has ever built or designed a home or constructed any building whatsoever will enjoy this book! Its unique size and cover makes a great socking stuffer for all my "construction clients."

      5 out of 5 stars A very funny book.......2003-07-18

I think it is great that a professional can make fun of his profession and make other people laugh. It is all done in a very "non-bashing" way and should be read by all architects and design workers. They will learn a few things about their profession from Archi-Toons that they did not know.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and pleasing.......2003-07-18

What a delightful and humorus approach by an architect about his own profession. I am sure that everyone in the architectual and design profession or anyone in a family associated with someone in this profession will enjoy the humor in these delightful cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Funny !.......2003-07-11

Great illustrations, Great Wit. Nicely packaged. The "Architect's Dream Sequence" cartoons resonated with me too. I didn't buy it but I would now- (It was a summer party gift to all employees from one of the principals in my office.)

      Book Description

Some Flash users like the depth, comfort and security of the linear tutorial approach. Others respond better to a more laid-back model. This book is for you if you're a denizen of the latter group; it's rich in images and examples, and restrained in its use of narrative. It gives you a fast but thorough and structured introduction that'll get you started with Flash MX quickly.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to MX........2002-10-27

In some quarters of the web design community, Flash is still seen as a great animation tool, but its other nature as a fully-fledged web application environment is barely comprehended.

In other quarters, designers are still using Flash in the most basic way, as a straight-through animation tool, but simple scripting that might nicely spice up an animation remains a mystery, and even tweens are a worry.

For too long in Flash's early days there were too few, in fact almost no, books about it. Then the long drought became a flood, and there are hundreds now. I am not complaining - the era when those who had puzzled out some obscure mystery were keen to show it off but refused to explain it was a frustrating one.

But now, when a designer wanders into a big city bookshop and claps eyes on all those big thick books on Flash, whose titles link Flash with daunting words like Applications and ActionScript, eyes are apt to glaze over to mutterings of "later, later, one day...."

What has been badly needed is an easy introduction to the latest version of Flash, written with clarity and respect, amply illustrated, structured so readers can easily dip in and out to grab some pearl of wisdom that can be applied to the job in hand, and that invites repeated perusal. What we needed has now arrived, and Macromedia Flash MX Express is it.

Designers are visual people, and they need their books well illustrated with screenshots and examples. Flash MX Express includes so many that it has a 2-column layout - one for text and one for images. Illustrations are annotated and captioned where necessary, and there is a reasonable balance between screenshots made on Mac and Windows computers.

An error common in those big thick Flash books is the authors making too many guesses about their readers, skipping over crucial steps on the assumption that "it's obvious, isn't it?" Cych, Mace and Rhodes do not do that there, covering every step of the way through each exercise. You really can jump in and out, grabbing only what you need that day. The authors then gently introduce that designers' bogeyman, ActionScript, two-thirds the way through, and follow it with introductions into components and video, both new with Flash MX.

Macromedia Flash MX Express is one of the best introductions into Flash MX for those new to Flash or who know they have been underusing its immense capabilities and want to dig deeper now. I hope that Friends of ED uses the same editorial team to write further-Express style Flash books in future.

2 out of 5 stars The old way once more and the same mistakes.......2002-10-15

This book suffers from the basic mistakes that the early books on Flash had. Animation is only taught later in the book and some of the most exciting features are not covered. By the time the reader gets to anything interesting, he/she will have lost any interest or looked for a different book. This is the kind of book that challenges any novice to go beyond the first 30 pages. Some do, many don't. And the book still gets sold. It also helps to sell more Flash books, since the reader will often think the problem lies with himself/herself. Not too bad?

5 out of 5 stars No time wasting hand holding here. Learn FAST...Really FAST.......2002-08-30

This book can teach authors and publishers as much about producing quality learning references as it can teach you about FLASH MX. Great for the beginner. This book doesn't waste your time with hand holding excersises that take forever to complete. At 333pages you'll be up to speed in no time. Each page is 2 columns one column text the other pictures. So it could be said that this book is actually 116 pages as apposed to the other 400 - 700 page volumes available on FLASH. Get it and Get it today. This book is the only book I would recomend for beginners along with a couple of hours on [the website].

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Top-notch jazz pieces.......2007-09-12

I bought this book a while ago and Howard Morgen's arrangements look quite different from pieces arranged by other jazz masters: they are very elegant, incredibly melodic, and grab the ear by unusual combinations of chords and single note solos with harmonics. I agree with other reviewers that Howard's arrangements are technically difficult to perform and fretting hand fingering is quite challenging. However, playing his arrangements is not impossible! This is my advice how to work on them. First, when working on the piece listen to it on the CD alone with reading the notation to link the audo signal with its notation's spelling - do it until you can hear the music just by reading the notes. Second, practice playing the most challenging measure until it sounds very close to what's on the CD: don't jump to practicing the new measure until you are good with the previous one because if they both sound "bad" you may become easily frustrated. Third, if you find it difficult to play chords requiring stretching fretting fingers over "15 frets" you can re-arrange these parts by either skipping some notes in the chord or refingering them into a more comfortable position: it will not sound as nice as original arrangement but will be good enough to walk through the entire piece.
The reason I gave it 4 is that it appears that there are few places where notation does not match its CD sound (check Satin Doll), and I hope this will be corrected in next editions of this wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars Great arrangements, but not for beginners.......2003-04-18

I really like this book. The arrangements are very interesting and well presented. Although it's not a book for beginners, some of the arragements are well suited for intermediate players who are just starting to learn solo jazz guitar. Others, though, are challenging even for a fairly advanced player (which is what I consider myself). If you find this book too challenging, make sure to stay away from Morgen's book on Gershwin. Even the simplest of those arrangements are hard.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2003-03-21

... or even intermediates. I went through a handful of the arrangements in detail, and I found that the fingerings are much more demanding than necessary to perform any of these pieces. The flourishes and single-note non-melody material should be marked optional and instead is treated as essential, making the arrangements pretty, but also pretty tricky. Best for an intermediate guitarist, who is probably already able to make decent money gigging and who already owns a handful of fake books, who is looking for alternative arrangements.

          Book Description

Avid puzzle mavens will spend hours slicing and dicing these wildly-hued brainbusters. That's because so many of the problems deal with dissecting geometric shapes--polygons, hexagons, squares, even a chessboard--into congruent parts or figuring out how the split parts would fit back together again. For example, to complete "Exploding Star," solvers have to copy the star in the book, cut it carefully into 12 colored pieces, and then rearrange them into four identical replicas of the big star. But this tough but fascinating collection has lots more to offer: there are tangram paradoxes that offer a new spin on the ancient Chinese game, mathematical conundrums dealing with weight and gravity, Egyptian rope puzzles, and host of other complex challenges.

          Book Description

Companies like American Girl, Best Buy, Washington Mutual, and TiVo came out of nowhere to virtually own their respective markets. How did they scoop their bigger and wealthier competition? It wasn't through a fat marketing budget. It was because they kept their promises . . . and not just any promises, but dangerously ambitious promises. In fact, these companies overpromised to lure customers in—and then overdelivered to keep them.

Rick Barrera, a respected marketing consultant and business lecturer, has studied these word-of-mouth-driven successes and concluded that they are masters of what he calls TouchPoint Branding—the art of making sure that every point of contact between a company and its customers is well executed and fulfills an over-the-top brand promise.

Barrera explains how TouchPoint Branding's three major components—Product TouchPoints, System TouchPoints, and Human TouchPoints—can create dramatic market differentiation. The companies featured in the book start with an extraordinary product (like the Hummer), supported by smoothly running systems (like the Sumerset Houseboats Web site), and add satisfying human contact (like the service at an American Girl store).

It's an old cliché in business that smart companies underpromise and overdeliver. But in today's crowded market, that's not enough. Barrera's insights and case studies can help any company overpromise . . . and still overdeliver.

5 out of 5 stars Overpromise and Overdeliver: The Secrets of Unshakable Customer Loyalty.......2007-07-18

"Over Promise and Over Deliver" This phrase sounds like a line used by a used car dealer. Don't all businesses try to give big promises just to get your money? How often do they actually live up to these promises? Not very often. So to exceed expectations seems a little unrealistic.

Over Promise and Over Deliver says that this need not be the case. Lots of companies like Google, TiVo, American Girl, and Washington Mutual not only deliver on their big promises but take customer service one step further. Their secrets are actually rather simple, find out what the customer needs and wants then take action.

Nearly all of the examples for companies using TouchPoint guidelines given in this book are large multimillion dollar businesses. Nonetheless, it is really easy to see how the system could be used in a smaller more moderate organization. In fact, I believe that TouchPoint probably works better in smaller situations where the employer and employees are all in daily contact with customers, allowing for more opportunities to understand what the consumer actually needs and wants.

Author Rick Barrera presents a credible, reasonably creative perspective on how your business can distinguish itself in a market that is saturated with advertising. The fastest-growing firms, he says, have learned to generate massive consumer buzz by making bountiful promises about their products and then overdelivering on those promises. Do that, he says, and you'll generate a wealth of free promotion as consumers talk with their friends and refer them to you. Barrera's "TouchPoint" system is a useful way to articulate standard business fundamentals that, properly executed, add up to strong customer satisfaction. Although Barrera uses some very good case studies, a few of them are probably a stretch. For instance, the average manager may not learn many lessons from the Blue Man entertainment group. Overall, however, we find that this book and its accompanying CD-ROM are useful references for executives and managers who are responsible for branding and strategic product positioning.

5 out of 5 stars New Twist to Catapult You Forward.......2005-05-10

"Under promise and over deliver." That phrase has been around long enough to become a cliché. Cliché concepts get old, unless someone comes along with a radical change and turns the cliché inside out. Enter Rick Barrera, a well-known marketing guru. People like this stretch our thinking, pushing us out of the envelope and tromping on the box in the meantime. If you listen to their messages, you will have difficulty staying "inside the box."

Barrera does not disappoint. Emphasizing "touch points," the intimate contact with the customer that can win-or lose-the day, he demonstrates how companies can go beyond the ordinary and fulfill the expectations they create in the mind of the consumer.

This book is organized into two sections: Overpromise and Underdeliver. The first section engages the reader in a discussion of brand promises, how they drive company growth, and ways that well-framed brand promises differentiate companies in the marketplace. Barrera's educational writing is well-seasoned with recent real-world examples.

In the opening pages of his book, Barrera introduces the concept of touch points-those special, meaningful moments where the customer comes in contact with the company. Three types of TouchPoints (Barrera's spelling) are presented. "Product TouchPoints occur where customers interact with the product or service a company is selling." "Human TouchPoints occur when the customer directly interacts with an organization's people." "System TouchPoints include all other points of contact between a company and its customers." The author explains each type of interaction and his views about their importance. "All three TouchPoints are vital to an organization's success, though to differing degrees. All three require a substantial and continuing investment of funds and managerial energy if they are to do their job properly..." The TouchPoint concept reminded me of Jan Carlson's work with Scandanavian Airlines years ago. Good lessons bear repeating.

The second section concentrates on meeting and exceeding customer expectations with each of the categories of TouchPoints. Two case studies, Washington Mutual Insurance Company and Lexus, illustrate the concepts before a concluding chapter and close into the index at the back of the book.

The book is filled with advice, examples, and inspiration that will be valuable to anyone in marketing today. Beyond this highly appropriate reader group, I would recommend that corporate executives pay careful attention to the book's messages. The concepts will be valuable to recruiters-corporate, college, and military-as well as to educators in all environments. The lessons conveyed in "Over Promise and Over Deliver" will be valuable to many people for many years. This is a book for our times.

          5 out of 5 stars Sage advice.......2005-02-12

I agree with Barrera that customer service will drive many if not most American businesses from now on. The era of cost-cutting that we went through in the 90s is gone, where profitability was driven by becoming lean and mean. This is actually most of what drove the great bull market of the 90s, at least in the non-tech companies, and it even had an effect there too. After the last bear market, the worst since 1929, U.S. companies are about as lean and mean as they're ever going to get. One of the few ways they can increase market share and profitability is to improve customer service. This book looks at a number of outstanding success stories and analyzes how they were able to beat out the competition to establish their own preferred brands. There is a lot of good advice here for both big and small businesses. Increasing and improving customer service is also one way American businesses can stop the exodus of customer service type jobs to countries like India. Also, as a small businessman who started up or worked in several customer service oriented businesses over his career, I can tell you that if someone likes you, they'll tell 5 people, but if they don't like you, they'll tell more like 15-20 people. You can't afford to have that sort of negative word of mouth advertising if you're going to be a success. Barrera's book has some sage advice on how to avoid the pitfalls and how to do things right when it comes to customer service.

The case examples in this book provide compelling reading. In particular, the study of Tivo captivated me. Barrera's principles of Overpromise and Overdeliver make sense. Having a unique selling proposition brings attention to your product and keeping your word inspires loyalty. This book reinforces what most executives know intuitively. I strongly suggest reading Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self in conjunction with this book to learn how to consistently apply the peak form of thinking that brings these principles to fruition.
