5 out of 5 stars Buildings in the mail........2002-07-27

This wonderful book, beautifully designed and printed, has 625 postcards of American buildings selected from six thousand in the author's collection. He chose these for their relevance and graphic rendering. Most of them probably originated from the Curt Teich company based in Chicago (they printed 360,000 different cards over the years). Van Malderen writes a short informative introduction about his collection and the architectural postcard. The majority show multi-storied buildings, especially skyscrapers but there are plenty of factories, docks, bridges, churches, street scenes and more. The buildings were photographed and then drawn (some artist drew the short straw and had to put all the windows in) to bring out the best of the structure, frequently removing nearby buildings so the original was left in all its glory.

The cards are arranged alphabetically by city, from Atlanta to Washington DC, New York, naturally, has the most, over 150. A nice touch is that some cards have stamps and cancellation marks on them and a few have the sender's handwriting, telling the folks back home that the building shown really is as big as it looks!

For such a lovely book I am surprised that the publishers did not include an index. Two other architectural postcard books worth checking out are `Wish You Were Here' by Barry Zaid, full of hotels (and their interiors) from the thirties and forties and like 'American Architecture' beautifully produced. `Not Only Building: New York' by Italo Rota, a 480 page paperback with 300 postcards. I thought it was rather badly produced, too many enlargements of the cards which unfortunately only emphasise the mass printing quality of the originals.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Only if your using medium format.......2007-09-21

Nice photos. However, throughout the book the author makes it well known that he primarily uses a medium format Mamiya 645. He has little use for 35mm and almost no use for D-SLR. Little actual "how to".
Would have prefered more hands on instruction or tips.

3 out of 5 stars Nice presentation but missing something.......2006-03-10

This is actually a decent book to learn about macro photography. The author covers the basics of each topics in his book, but not much details as to why certain things should be or should not be done. I recommend John Shaw's Closeups in Nature.

5 out of 5 stars A nice tutorial on macro photography.......2006-01-01

I enjoyed the images in this book as well as the author's commentary on many of the shots. His thoughts on composition are insightful and very useful. I found this book to be a nice introduction, although the first few chapters where the author discusses equipment and the eternal film vs digital debate weren't very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about Buffyverse monsters.......2004-01-17

"The Monster Smackdown" is a supplement for the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" roleplaying game, a counterpart to the "Slayer's Handbook" that is also available. Written by Thom Marrion, with assistance form a lot of others, this volume builds on the canon of the Buffyverse (through the show's first six seasons) and expands it to help players of the roleplaying game create new scenarios. While most of the monsters on "BtVS" were based on real world supernatural myths and legends, that is not seen as a limitation but a starting point for Directors. So while "Monster Smackdown" provides a summary of that mythology as it pertains to the darker side of the Buffyverse, it also introduces you to the rules and tools for you to expand your own neck of the "BtVS" underworld as your little (still beating) heart desires.

The book is divided into seven chapters: (1) Welcome to the Hellmouth summarizes the major points about monsters in the Buffyverse that gives you some ideas for locating Hellmouths in other places and a quick lesson on various demon dimensions; (2) Die Young, Live Forever is a detailed look at vampires, from abilities and weaknesses to notes on the soul and mortality; (3) From Hell runs down the "regular" demons who are considered lower-tier threats; (4) Everything You Ever Dreaded Under Your Bed collects all the various non-vamp, non-demon creatures that have appeared in the Buffyverse; (5) Bads, Big and Small focuses on the "name" adversaries for Buffy, from Adam and Angelus to Sweet and Mr. Trick, in what is by far the longest chapter in the book; (6) Monster Spawning provides tips for Directors creating their own adversaries and includes some cast member monsters, new creature qualities, new powers, and new archetypes; (7) The Once and Future HST is a ready-to-slay episode containing a major turning point in the on-going Djinn Season that we have been following along in these Eden Studio publications.

The book is filled with those pithy quotations that made "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" a test of your pop culture knowledge, boxes containing additional information and supplemental charts and tables, and fiction sections or cut scenes that give you a sense of what sort of scenarios you can play out in these games. These books are filled with photographs and illustrations, with gorgeous production values, so that they will appeal to fans of the series who are not necessarily interested in playing the game (which explains why they are on the shelf of my fancy bookcase next to my volumes of "BtVS" scripts).

5 out of 5 stars A need for any BtVS RPG Player!.......2003-12-23

This book is packed full of colorful, eye-catching illistrations along with text true to the show. Many of the monsters included can be easily recognized by any true fan. Includes ways to make your own demon characters!

3 out of 5 stars Good for the newer fan.......2000-01-02

If you have just discovered the world of TV-Boy, grab a canned ham and a lovely beverage, and settle in for an enjoyable light read. Bill Adler has done a good job outlining the highlights of David Letterman's radio and television career. The uninitiated will also learn about Dave's personal life, including his first marraige, his relationship with co-creator of 'Late Night', Merrill Markoe, and the stalker who once camped out by his pool.

One particularly entertaining chapter is entitled, 'Dave on Dave', which contains snippets of print and television interviews spanning the course of Letterman's career.

For the seasoned fan, however, there is nothing new to be found in 'The Letterman Wit'. I would suggest you read Bill Carter's 'The Late Shift' if you are looking for information on the late night wars, 'Late Night: The Book' edited by Merrill Markoe, if you want a quirky look at the making of the show, and 'The David Letterman Story' by Caroline Latham, if you want a more indepth peak into Dave's personal life.

"The series of novels about the Yang family has been praised by reviewers as "funny, poignant" (Booklist, starred review) and "breezy, snappy, and affectionately evoked" (New York Times). Publisher's Weekly has said Lensey Namioka's writing "sheds light on the Chinese-American culture in a manner that at times recalls Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. In this final installment in the Yang family quartet, Eldest Brother discovers he needs a new violin and is forced to get a job to pay for it. After trying his hand at everything from baby-sitting to serving sushi, he becomes obsessed with making money and gives up on the violin altogether, until his younger siblings lead him to resume his music. Once again, Ms. Namioka offers firsthand insights into growing up Chinese-American with a touching story and a healthy dose of humor."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A VERY THOUGHTFUL AND FUNNY BOOK.......2000-06-30

I've long been a fan of Lensey Namioka's books, especially her mysteries featuring the two Japanese samurai, Zenta and Matsuzo. However, her new series of books featuring the irrepresible Yang family have proven to be delightful. I thought this installment, featuring the eldest Yang child, was thoughtful and well-written. It tells of the problems that eldest children have to go through (I'm one myself) and how hard work can overcome the worst of odds- like when Yang the Eldest injured his finger, which is absolutely devastating to any violin player. This novel illustrated the cultural differences that exist between China and America and the lives of a family of Chinese immigrants trying to make it in America.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Case study is worth reading..........2007-04-21

First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.

3 out of 5 stars good case study.......2006-04-30

I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".

This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.

The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.

I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.

The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

            I rate it "Good - 4 stars"

            2 out of 5 stars Required Text.......2002-09-17

This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.
