These spectacular, complex, mixed-media paintings fuse such disparate sources as medieval European religious painting and 1960s pop art to create haunting and sometimes bizarre scenes that alternately mock and celebrate various aspects of human behavior.

        Book Description

Dorothea Lange chose to work as a photographer during a time when family was supposed to come first for a woman. Like so many women, she had a husband and children to take care of--but no matter how hard she tried, family life could not substitute for the work she loved. Her passion was photographing people. During her career, Dorothea Lange captured some of the most desperate and beautiful faces America has seen in photographs. Restless Spirit: The Life and Work of Dorothea Lange includes over sixty of Lange's extraordinary photographs printed in high quality duotones, and chronicles Lange's life from her childhood on the Lower East Side of New York, through her early years as a portrait photographer in San Francisco, to her famous work for the government photographing starving migrant workers in California. Also included are her heart-breaking photographs of Japanese Americans interned on the West Coast during World War II. Author Elizabeth Partridge has woven Lange's own words into her book, creating not just another biography, but an intimate portrait of the artist who put faces on some of the darkest episodes in America's history. Restless Spirit presents a magnificent showcase of work that will not soon be forgotten. Dorothea Lange was Elizabeth Partridge's godmother and her father was Lange's photographic assistant in the 1930s.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Lange--.......2005-11-25

This isn't the most comprehensive book on Dorothea Lange, a woman of some complication. However, it can be a great introduction and a stimulus to looking deeper into her life and work. Ms. Partridge brings a unique perspective to the book that 'outside' biographers can't offer. I've been a fan of hers since I grew up in the sixties; she spawned along with others, a new generation of activist photographers. Many of the photos in this book are standards to be found elsewhere. What I particularly enjoyed were the family photos which can't be found elsewhere. My overriding impression of this subject was a prickly and difficult woman who was driven by her problematic past, combined with genius and empathy that few have possessed. Recommended for anyone new to Lange and her work. Written for the younger reader.

5 out of 5 stars Young Adult Non-fiction - a wonderful find for the classroom.......2000-08-17

Are you looking for non-fiction which is well-written and interesting, and covers topics over which students are generally tested for state proficiency or competency standards? This book fits all requirements. The author doesn't flinch at presenting the difficult, occasionally less-than-flattering side of the talented photographer, so that the reader comes away with a feeling of having met a "real" person, albeit one with tremendous talent. Yet, Partridge focuses on the life and times of her subject without "sensationalism". The book is well-written. Partridge never talks down to her readers, and her clear language and vocabulary should be well within the capabilities of 7th, 8th or 9th grade students. This book ties art, social studies and language arts together in perfect harmony for a study of the Depression Era of US history. Adults will enjoy this book as well.

        5 out of 5 stars A perfect 10.......2000-05-26

              Book Description

This pioneering study presents an overview of the Mexican comic book industry, together with in-depth studies of the best selling Mexican comic books of the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the popular superhero, adventure, humor, romance, political, detective, and Western comic books are described and analyzed in detail, and then discussed in terms of how they reflect both Mexican and United States cultures. The study concludes with a critical discussion of the media imperialism hypothesis' applicability to the Mexican comic book. The comic book is Mexico's most popular print medium, read by all ages and socio-economic groups. Many may be surprised to learn that, in Mexico, Mexican comic books far outsell U.S. comic books in Spanish translation. The Mexican comic book is not a clone of its U.S. model, but rather a hybrid product that mixes U.S. forms and conventions with Mexican content. This work is a major contribution to the understanding of contemporary Mexican culture.

5 out of 5 stars For All Lugosi Fans.......2007-02-24

This book is not likely to be a best seller, for the subject matter is geared toward the fans of Bela Lugosi. Lugosi has a very strong fan base, despite the actor's death in the middle 1950's.

This book chronicles Lugosi's last big tour in the play that was has claim to fame, and also the play that typecast him, 'Dracula'. It also tells the story of Lugosi's three films made in England, 'The Mystery of The Marie Celeste, Deads Eyes Of London, Mother Riley Meets The Vampire'.

There is much detail of the English tour of 'Dracula', and for Lugosi fans there is a lot of information about him and his life that will interest them. For the Lugosiphile, this book is a must read.

                    Book Description

Not since the phenomenal rise (and subsequent demise) of grunge superstars Nirvana 10 years ago, have an American band caught the imagination of the world's rock fans in the way Limp Bizkit have. In just a couple of years this Florida 5 piece have gone from being seen as white boy rap wannabees to major league, million selling, nu-metal godfathers, with a following to match. Acclaimed critically and commercially in equal measures, the Bizkits' now notch up awards and top polls on a daily basis, with their latest album `Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Coloured Water' selling huge quantities consistently and so remaining in the top 10 months after it's release. Global Assassins charts this incredible rise to fame and fortune that mainman Fred Durst and his loyal partners have achieved. Ideally presented for the average Limp Bizkit fan, compromising equal parts intelligent text and full colour photography, with a corresponding price tag, meaning the target market of 14-25 year olds should find it easy to fit into their budgets.

Limp Bizkit rose from the ashes of Florida tight-jeaned, big-haired heavy metal scene to take on the world with an aggressive cover version of George Michael's pop hit "Faith." After a successful run on Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest and a triumphant stint with Korn's Family Values tour, Limp Bizkit is clearly a band that fans will continue to watch.

                    5 out of 5 stars A REALLY GREAT BOOK.......2000-11-30

Whoever said that this book isn't well written is out of their minds. Aside from it being full of information and cool pictures, the thing I liked the most about it was the writing. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know all about Limp Bizkit. This book is the bomb.

Another entry in the small but growing management library that suggests purposely slowing down and smelling the roses could actually boost productivity in today's 24/7 world, Tom DeMarco's Slack stands out because it is aimed at "the infernal busyness of the modern workplace." DeMarco writes, "Organizations sometimes become obsessed with efficiency and make themselves so busy that responsiveness and net effectiveness suffer." By intentionally creating downtime, or "slack," management will find a much-needed opportunity to build a "capacity to change" into an otherwise strained enterprise that will help companies respond more successfully to constantly evolving conditions. Focusing specifically on knowledge workers and the environment in which they toil, DeMarco addresses the corporate stress that results from going full-tilt, and offers remedies he thinks will foster growth instead of stagnation. Slack, he contends, is just the thing to nurture the out-of-box thinking required in the 21st century, and within these pages, he makes a strong case for it. --Howard Rothman

                          Book Description

If your company’s goal is to become fast, responsive, and agile, more efficiency is not the answer--you need more slack.

Why is it that today’s superefficient organizations are ailing? Tom DeMarco, a leading management consultant to both Fortune 500 and up-and-coming companies, reveals a counterintuitive principle that explains why efficiency efforts can slow a company down. That principle is the value of slack, the degree of freedom in a company that allows it to change. Implementing slack could be as simple as adding an assistant to a department and letting high-priced talent spend less time at the photocopier and more time making key decisions, or it could mean designing workloads that allow people room to think, innovate, and reinvent themselves. It means embracing risk, eliminating fear, and knowing when to go slow. Slack allows for change, fosters creativity, promotes quality, and, above all, produces growth.

With an approach that works for new- and old-economy companies alike, this revolutionary handbook debunks commonly held assumptions about real-world management, and gives you and your company a brand-new model for achieving and maintaining true effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Pithy Swath Through the Process Jungle.......2007-08-05

I agree that this is simultaneously a great screed on the inanity of most corporate management, and also a powerful indictment of the tendency of IT management to just go along, accepting a premise that is false and on most projects, is life-threatening.

I totally disagree with the one bad reviewer who claims the book is below the bar of even anecdotal, and boring. On the contrary, much of what is argued here is a logical, or purely rhetorical position, but that is the part that is the most refreshing! Whereas Peopleware may be more comprehensive, it is also less bold and rhetorically less daring. I love to see someone like DeMarco, who has proven all he needs to, instead of just churn out another episode in his established realm, provoke, argue, and show the amount of passion this book contains. Only someone who considers rhetoric sinful could find this book boring.

That said, this book is also not from left field: it owes a lot to Lean, et al, on the biz and IT process side, and it is also of a piece with other writings like Mythical Man Month. Personally, I think the most important thing about this book is that it is original in its approach and size, etc.: computer science, folks, is not a science, and the fact that it has been controlled by science people all these years, is one of the reasons it has denied many of the hugely important aspects of its reality, e.g. psychology, sociology, etc. We desperately need more books like this that are broadly rhetorical, small, quick reads, that can penetrate into the more densely forested parts of the realm.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion to Peopleware.......2007-06-02

If you've read Peopleware, this book is the next logical step.
You may get a sense of deja vu since this book reiterates and indirectly references Peopleware in places. However, even in these sections, Slack goes deeper. Peopleware tells you that certain things are bad, and Slack tells you exactly why it is bad and what you can do to avoid it.

2 out of 5 stars Some good points, but boring.......2007-02-15

Before I get harsh, I will say that there are definately some good points and ideas that you will go away with from this book. However, the author could have said it in fewer words, and clearer. If you're reading this, I'm sure you've read all the cliche mangerial types of books. This, to Tom's credit, is different than your average manager book, with a different perspective on the surviving the coporate world... but its also a stretch. Much of the points in the book are not only subjective, and not backed with real-life anecdotes and testimonials (there are few, but they are far between), but the analogies are weak, and the diagrams and graphs are subjective and border-line bogus (not constructed with real points of correlated data; they are more like guess-sketches). If you looking for a fresh, quick, to the point book that will keep your attention and that you can't put down, then this is not that book.

5 out of 5 stars Make time to read this book.......2006-10-24

DeMarco is back again, with another good book in the spirit of Controlling Software Projects and Peopleware. Those books, written in the 1980s, still have a lot to say about software and people today -- read them too. But here in Slack, DeMarco updates his message specifically for the super-efficient, online, always busy 21st century.

As companies streamline to make sure that they're mostly workers (less middle management) and that everyone is always busy, DeMarco suggests that thinking time can get cut out. And that thinking, to be done in the "slack" time that gets cut, is essential for keeping a company agile and inventive.

DeMarco still manages to get many of his basic ideas in, which gives the book variety. Just a sample here.

On schedules: "A bad schedule is [simply] one that sets a date that is subsequently missed .... When the schedule is wrong, the work goes on anyway, proceeding in some way other than as planned. The result is that the effort is necessarily hurt."

On leadership: "Leadership is not restricted to acting only downward along the lines of organizational authority. The bread-and-butter acts of leadership that make companies healthy involve people leading their bosses, leading their peers ... all without ever being granted the official power to do what they're doing. It's enrolling someone who is distinctly outside the scope of your offical power base that constitutes real leadership."

Back on the main topic of the book, time and what to do with it: "People under time pressure don't think faster."

So find a little slack time and read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful handbook - seems all common sense but..........2006-02-24

I've had pleasure in reading that book, finding that the incredible Big Mess I'm facing in my company is not a new nor seldom case.

All is common sense, like the one that could have preached an old wise Cherokee. Simple, to the point sentences.
Read it once, they you might say, "ok, I'll naturally continue to do like that, as ever"
Read it again a few years later, a check what you've done. I'd bet that practice drifts a bit from theory. Why? There lies the best added-value of this handbook.

Apart that, I'd really like to see and work with a CEO that manage to apply that mind-set.

Now a doubt pops up: is our current business world so different ('hurry up' mantra) than the one of our fathers?

In an era of expense-slashing and 24/7 work schedules, the notion of corporations' cutting themselves a little slack may seem far-fetched. But as the old ideal of the lean and mean staff proves to have negative consequences, "slack" is becoming the critical factor in a company's ability to grow, maintain profitability, and be able to accommodate marketplace changes. Slack is the cutting-edge guide to capitalizing on these revolutionary principles. Acclaimed management consultant Tom DeMarco, whose clients include such giants as Hewlett Packard and IBM, has spent years studying this critical but neglected corporate strategy. Without time built in for managers and workers to spend thinking about new ideas, he's shown companies can't effectively respond to sudden events, and they won't have enough flexibility to change when necessary or to take needed risks. And forget about fostering creativity. As companies have become slaves to head counts, overloading workers with multiple job descriptions, the result is not necessarily soaring revenues; turnover, stagnation, disloyalty, and slowdown are the more likely outcomes. A counterintuitive approach that works for new- and old-economy companies alike, Slack debunks commonly held assumptions about personnel management and replaces them with an innovative model for true effectiveness -- and a healthier bottom line.
