Since 1978, French photographer Frédéric Brenner has been chronicling the Jewish Diaspora by producing visual social histories of Jewish communities. Diaspora is a photographic record of his 25-year search for the Jewish population in 40 countries over five continents. Volume I, 344 pages, is a collection of 262 of Brenner's more than 80,000 photographs, the most extensive and diverse visual record of Jewish life ever created. A four page color insert includes two full-color photographs. Volume II is 164 pages of evocative essays by leading intellectuals on the meaning and significance to each of them of 60 of Brenner's photographs, reproduced here in smaller format. Diaspora is a landmark project that captures the scope and dynamism of one of the world's oldest, most diverse communities, and challenges stereotypes held by Jews and non-Jews alike.

I read about this book in Pop Photo Magazine (www.pophoto.com) and was very intrigued by it. I got the book and it is awesome! It's probably the most comprehensive photographic look at the Diaspora that I've ever seen. A great Hanukah present!
Magnificent Photographs Of A People United In Exile.......2003-11-25
French photographer Frederic Brenner has brilliantly documented Jewish life in the Diaspora with his magnificent photographs. He has spent the last twenty-five years traveling through over forty countries, on five continents, creating and compiling this collection of images of Jewish communities, faces and culture. Brenner has woven a thread, through the visual image, that shows a people united in their heritage.
This beautiful two volume set is presented in a heavy laminated slipcase. Volume I, PHOTOGRAPHS, contains 262 of Brenner's black and white photos, 2 two-page color photographs, and one map. There are images of a Jewish Harley-Davidson motorcycle club with members posed in front of a Miami Beach synagogue; Jewish workers and their children from Birobidzhan, the former Soviet Union's Jewish autonomous region; portraits of modern Jewish writers living in Austria and Germany; women who have lost their children to the secret police in Argentina; Marranos in Portugal who continue the tradition of celebrating the Passover secretly; Jewish men selling Christian souvenirs in Rome's St. Peter's Piazza; a spiritual gathering of Navahos and Jews in Arizona; Jewish barbers from Tajikistan and merchants from Calcutta. The only color photographs in the book show a yellow swatch of cloth printed with the Star of David that Jews were forced to wear under the Nazis. There is an entire room covered in the same cloth - a photograph commissioned for the Vienna State Opera that hung there as a stage curtain.
Volume II, VOICES, contains writings - essays and commentary from such modern intellectuals and authors as Carlos Fuentes, Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, Georges Steiner, André Aciman, Jacques Derrida and the voices of the people photographed.
Frederic Brenner wrote, "The Jews I have photographed are all contemporary, but together they reflect a full spectrum of space and time . . . Diaspora: An experience of dispossession and discontinuity. . . . The photographs enable us to see and acknowledge the multiple threads from which we are woven, to listen to and acknowledge the multiple voices within us, even when paradoxical and discordant."
These massive albums represent a tremendous achievement. Brenner has given a gift to us all. These books deserve a place of honor in the home.

This is a book remarkable for its depicting the so many facets of UNITY. Its stated and documented variety in unity is achieved by capturing the unity in variety of all self-described Jews. Yet, such generous conclusion soon becomes the premise of an inference, one cannot abstain from, about the unity of all humankind.
Great photos that span over several decades, continents, countries, and one people along a vast continuum. The subjects do a certain amount of posing as if in preparation for the moment the reader meets them all. And the reader has the option to meet them in any sequence OR summon all these geo-temporal instances in one place, at one time.
Great photos, consistent quality and presentation technique, good commentary in the second volume. Excellent gift to us all!

I rarely enjoy a "coffee table book" but this is so much more. It is absolutely brilliant-- the many essays are brief but thoughtful and a wonderful companion for the photos which span the evolution of a 25 year career-- or rather-- vocation. Highly recommended.

In the decade following the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords, some 100,000 diasporic Palestinians returned to the West Bank and Gaza. Among them were children and young adults who were born in exile and whose sense of Palestinian identity was shaped not by lived experience but rather through the transmission and re-creation of memories, images, and history. As a result, "returning" to the homeland that had never actually been their home presented challenges and disappointments for these young Palestinians, who found their lifeways and values sometimes at odds with those of their new neighbors in the West Bank and Gaza.
This original ethnography records the experiences of Palestinians born in exile who have emigrated to the Palestinian homeland. Juliane Hammer interviews young adults between the ages of 16 and 35 to learn how their Palestinian identity has been affected by living in various Arab countries or the United States and then moving to the West Bank and Gaza. Their responses underscore how much the experience of living outside of Palestine has become integral to the Palestinian national character, even as Palestinians maintain an overwhelming sense of belonging to one another as a people.

The champagne of prank letter books?.......2005-04-30
I haven't read all the prank letter collections out there, but from what I've seen I think that Sterling Huck's brand is a cut above. In general, his efforts tend to be brilliantly subtle, impressively creative, and often refreshingly innocuous as well (most of the recipients can be seen as playmates rather than victims). His voice is a compelling -- and varied -- one, and he always fleshes out his correspondence with the extra little details and digressions that make the absurd worlds he creates surprisingly plausible and vivid.
Big Laughs.......2003-01-09
This is a great book to take along on a long flight, or keep next to the can. The letters are outlandish, yet somehow believable, and you'll be laughing long after you put the book down. My favorite was his offer to The Seattle Mariners to work at their games as a "roving barber," shaving the fans in the stands.
Subtle and Very Funny.......2002-11-12
Mr. Sterling Huck is a prankster of the first order - smart, funny, and possessed of an imagination that just won't quit. He may want to become King Vitaman II, or shave fans at a Seattle Mariners game, or add the missing "g" to Dunkin' Donuts store logo . . . it's all very subtle and very funny. Also, he doesn't rely on any profanity or potty humor, which is refreshing.
Hard To Believe This Is Real.......2002-11-04
I learned of this book from Bill DeMain of Swan Dive at one of their performances. Unbeknownst to me, Bill has had a very active "other life" penning witty letters to companies under the pen name of Sterling Huck. One page into this most unique book and I was on the floor laughing uncontrollably. Sterling Huck leads us through a vast array of letters that he penned to various corporations and famous personalities. Although his letters are total gems of creative genius, much of the hilarity comes from the responses he receives in return. This book is a great read and one that you'll be telling all your friends about.
Sincere Absurdity.......2002-10-28
I've collected many of the prank letter books over the years, including The Lazlo Letters and Letters From A Nut, but I think this is my favorite. The combination of politeness, surreal humor and convincing detail make Huck's letters not only laugh out loud funny, but compelling to read. Also, the photos are a hoot. My favorite letter: he writes to a fancy health spa, tells them he's a ventriloquist, and that he'd like to visit with his dummy, Little Sir Pitney (who is girl crazy). This is the perfect gift book.

What you get is the shooting script for this gonzo film plus a sixteen page color photo insert of stills from the movie. At the end is an eight page interview with the reclusive Charlie Kaufman about the writing of the film in which he uses the word "... ..." quite a bit. By the way, if you're interested in the script, there's a quite good interview with Kaufman about the film in the March/April 2002 issue of Creative Screenwriting magazine. The Nov/Dec. 2002 issue also has an interview with him, that one's about "Adaptation" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

Three words of advice: save your money. Whereas "The Closers" was all steak, "The Closers 2" is as thin as one scrawny piece of bacon. There really is no subtsance to this book. It puports to yield more "secrets" to powerful selling, but it's full of light and largely useless bromides. As I was reading it I felt sure I would come to the "good stuff" soon, but never did. It was like one continuous preface, telling you what goodies there were coming soon, but never getting to them. It is shameful that the cover carries a "WARNING -- not for the beginner or novice, but for sales professionals ONLY." This is puffery of the worse kind, a sleazy sales "trick" that does not belong in any self-respecting salespersons's reportoire. I'm afraid the rest of the book goes downhill from there.

Eliminated the ceiling of my earnings in the first reading........1999-04-10
It is amazing how quickly I was able to remove the ceiling that impeded by sales production. Don't misunderstand; I was at the top of my company in terms of sales production, but I just couldn't "break free." Then, I had one of those nightmare months that sales professionals dread. The ones we blame on everything except our inability to close. I cleared the decks, read The Closers II, and removed the obstacles. Since I found this little treasure, I've produced more in the last TWO WEEKS than I produced last QUARTER. I loaned my copy of the original Closers to a friend in the insurance business and I can't get it back. I guess that means he's profiting from the material too.
