Book Description
Help teens in the academic middle succeed by creating and valuing other ways to win!
Research suggests that more than half of high school graduates are not academically prepared for college, yet they do not have significant learning disabilities preventing them from succeeding in a traditional classroom setting. This timeless bestseller, now in its third edition, has been updated with new data, recommendations, and observations to explore the choices available to these students beyond traditional four-year colleges.
Illustrating options that are more accessible and carry a much higher probability of student success, this resource:
- Dispels the "one way to win" myth
- Presents "other ways to win" that do not require a four-year college degree
- Provides benefits for students with alternate forms of post-high school education
All teens deserve to succeed regardless of the post-secondary educational path they take.
Other Ways to Win can help make it happen.

Educators--Take Note.......2000-03-20
This book should be required reading for high school and middle school teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators. (And it wouldn't hurt for the elementary school educators to read it, either.) It is also recommended for parents who are concerned about the types of curriculums offered in high schools today.
Gray and Herr say that the "one way to win" (i.e, the four-year college education) does not work for all students -- particularly many in what they call the academic middle. They say that many of these students enter four-year colleges ill prepared. They end up taking many remedial courses their first year, many do not finish college, and end up with high student loan debt.
They recommend that students start to prepare a career plan in middle school or the first year in high school. Such plans should include a realistic assessment of the student's abilities to undertake a four-year college program. For many students, moving into one and two-year certificate and associate degree programs which lead to highly skilled, highly paying jobs would be a better alternative than a four-year college. Other students would benefit from a school-to-work transition program.
In short, Gray and Herr say that the current academic system is failing many students, and we need to look at alternatives to help students succeed.

When Tommy and Natt roll an 800-pound dead guy across a burger joint for cover under the blazing guns of SAS agents out for vengeance, you know you're experiencing another hilariously and sometimes disgustingly weird collection of Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Hitman. Who Dares Wins, the compilation of issues 23 through 28 of the series, can be a bit hard to swallow at first. After all, the unflappable Monaghan just dealt with a ridiculously well-armed demon from hell (among other things) in Ace of Killers, so why's he so afraid of some crummy British commandos anyway? But the killer team of Ennis and McCrea still manage a credible drop in tempo here, heavy on the brogue and honor with a team of Her Majesty's finest out to collect on an old debt. Throw in Mafia don Men's Room Louie (also out to kill Monaghan--who isn't these days?), and you have another well-paced, bullet-to-the-head adventure. --Paul Hughes

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
From the title, it is pretty obvious that this is about Tommy Monaghan and an encounter with the SAS.
It is a bit odd as the quite competent Monaghan with superpowers has problems with this SAS team. Part of it is probably his reluctance to shoot normal humans, as opposed to his bad guy meta rule.
That Wasn't Our Tommy Monaghan!.......2006-02-25
Let me just say that I bought this ANYWAYS. I love the characters, I wanted more. However, this story betrays your trust in the author.
YOU CAN'T MAKE RULES AND THEN IGNORE THEM. That's bad writing.
The first books make it TOTALLY clear that Tommy Monaghan is effectively impossible to surprise, what with his X-ray vision and telepathy. Mobsters, assassins, and even Batman himself have a hard time getting the drop on him.
Since the bad guys in this book are a SMALL group of British SAS, with NO superpowers, who do NOT know about his abilities, going into HIS hometown, you would think they would be pretty much doomed, no matter how skilled they were or how much ammo they packed. After all, he's very hard to surprise and has survived much worse than them (demons from hell, anyone?). Also, he's VERY accurate with a handgun.
So in this book he gets surprised a LOT. He gets very, VERY scared. His powers seem to have almost completely faded away overnight. His accuracy goes into the toilet. When he DOES manage to kill one of the SAS, he gets incredibly angsty about feeling the guy's death telepathically even though he killed a mobster in book one while reading his mind and was perfectly fine about it.
In short, this should have been a short story. A fun short story. However, everything I expected from Tommy didn't happen. At almost every page I kept asking myself "Why doesn't he JUST...?" Because if he DID, it would WORK and that would make it a short story.
Tommy couldn't act like Tommy without making it a short story, so he doesn't.
Bad writing.
WHO DARES to read HITMAN...WINS!.......2006-02-09
HITMAN was such an unusual book during the course of its 60-issue run (chiefly because writer Garth Ennis' creative pendulum could swing from gallows humor to mischeivous character banter to literally drop-dead mean action with the turn of a page) that it was easy to overlook the moments of serious drama. With the WHO DARES WINS story arc, Ennis and McCrea turn in a deftly delivered tale of retribution and humility.
One of the running themes of the series, and specifically this story arc, is how seemingly trivial events can lead to huge trevails despite our best efforts to put them behind us. "Forced atonement" seems about as apt a description for what befalls the protagonists thoughout the story as anything.
Prior to this tale, the main characters Tommy Monaghan and Natt the Hat had come through a series of episodes relatively unscathed. One of these episodes - which had previously been related in a somewhat comical flashback - now comes back to haunt them in the form of a group of frighteningly efficient SAS soldiers. Also, a local godfather decides to exact a similar revenge on our main character at the exact same time, with wave after wave of hired guns, finally pressing Monaghan and Natt to play both ends against the middle.
Ennis' sharp characterization shows Monaghan and Natt realizing these are threats they can't shrug off as they have so smugly with others, and there's nothing comical at all about the grim determination with which the SAS soldiers seek out our duo.
Ennis allows the reader to read minds like Tommy Monaghan by clearly presenting the points-of-view of every character, from minor player to major cast member. By doing so, the antagonists gain a humanity one often doesn't find in "comic books"; you know why each character sets upon their course of action, and you can't fully blame them.
HITMAN was also one of the few mainstream books I've ever read where there was a genuine danger for the main characters in almost every story. There was no guarantee of a return to the status quo (if one even existed) at any point, and the characters' mortality was always on the line.
McCrea's artwork was perfectly supple enough throughout this book's run to embrace the elastic nature of Ennis' writing. By turns brooding and naturalistic and exaggerated and comical, this was the arc where McCrea's artwork became noticeably darker, setting a somber stage for what was to come. And as bloody as some confrontations turn, McCrea keeps the artwork comparatively gore-free -- no small feat for these stories.
This story is a major departure from others which more clearly demonstrate the grounding HITMAN has in the DC Universe - there are no superpeople, monsters (of the supernatural kind anyway) or such to be found - which may be why it isn't as embraced as others. However, for those who prefer seeing Monaghan in a more believeable narrative, behaving in a surprisingly less-than-typical but still believeable fashion...you can't lose with WHO DARES WINS.
Not as bad as it's made out to be........2002-12-27
All of this is but opinion, but this installment of the Hitman series is not worth ignoring. Garth Ennis' writing is great on an emotional level, if you just take it as it comes. It causes Tommy and Natt to examine themselves, which is interesting. It's also interesting to see the lengths the SAS guys go to to get their hands on Tommy and Natt. The ending is good in execution. Although you can easily see it coming, it doesn't matter. The intensity of it is great, if you think about it as a movie (Visualize, man!). The only reason I give this 4 stars is that it isn't as good as Ace of Killers (Which I feel is the best in the Hitman series.), and the Irish slang is a bit hard to get around at times. Quick commentary: It would seem that DC has ceased to print the further adventures of Hitman in TPB format. It's a pity that it had to be so early in the series. Hitman fans should get together and tell DC we want the rest, just like how they published all of Preacher.
Deceiving.......2002-11-20
The only thing I can say about this book is don't buy it!
Tommy Monaghan didn't deserve that. The first 4 books of the series are so good, I'd advise to stay on that good impression. This last one is messy with a lot less humour and many more casualties.
Right I was deceived by Garth Ennis who made much much better than this.

The Collected Works, Volume 3: 'Sick, Sick, Sick'.......2007-04-07
I originally ordered this book( Sick Sick Sick ) because my old Feiffer book, Passionella, was falling apart. It was a Fontana publication, and had the following titles:
Passionella, Munro, George's Moon and Boom. It was printed in 1965 and I inherited it from my older sisters.
Well this book does not have all those titles, but it is still a worthwhile replacement!
The book starts of with excerpts from the Village Voice years, and kicks into high gear with Boom, Rollie and the Deluge.
It delivers satirical commentary on society; all done in a humorous way that will make you smile.
For example:
The Beatnik era.
Government propaganda of the sixties and the nuclear testing programs
The media
The dating scene
And much more!
Jules Feiffer makes you think as well as laugh........1999-04-10
Jules Feiffer is a comedy genius, one of a kind. I will never figure out why he was never syndicated. Why did his comics only appear in the Village Voice? Maybe he is syndicated, but not in any papers that I've ever seen. There's no reason why his cartoons wouldn't be appropriate in a mainstream newspaper (which the Village Voice certainly is not). If Doonsbury could make it into widespread (to say the least) syndication, then why can't Jules Feiffer. Maybe he chose not to, for some reason or other. All I know is that millions of Americans have been deprived for years of the comedic genius of Feiffer. Sure, he's intellectual, but certainly not out of reach of an average I.Q. Oh, well. Anyway, I will tell you that he is deep, in a way that is reminiscent of the Peanuts cartoons of the fifties to the sixties: funny, but fragile and touching as well. He can put a political edge to his material, or he can just make a statement about the human condition. Actually, the latter is what he does best. To enjoy Jules Feiffer, one need not be a genius, but just a thinker. But the main thing is he has an uncanny ability to hit the nail right on the head, and not shove the point he's making down your throat. It's satirical and pointed comedy that goes down as easy as Budweiser, the king of beers.

Just an Average Writing Advice Book.......2006-09-30
ASK THE PROS: SCREENWRITING is a book presented by the people behind the Final Draft screenwriting software. I saw an advertisement for the book in some promotional materials that came with my copy of Final Draft and since I liked the software so much I figured ASK THE PROS: SCREENWRITING would be better than some of the screenwriting books I have read. I was sorely disappointed.
Through the course of the book 101 questions that beginning or struggling screenwriters have asked are answered by a "panel" of professionals. The "panel" consists of screenwriters, tv writers, producers, development and studio execs, readers, story editors, agents, managers, attorneys, and mentors. The book is divided in chapters according to the type of professionals answering the question, for instance legal questions are answered by attorneys, development questions are asked and answered in the section with producers and development and studio execs, etc.
Though there are some specific questions, most of the 101 questions are general: How do I get an agent?; How do you come up with ideas?; What makes a screenplay great?; etc. I've read much of the same type of material in other books and there isn't anything new here. Not only that, but just about every question asked has two opposing answers given. Writing is a process and there is no one way to write. All good writers know that, but apparently the editors weren't marketing this book towards good writers. If you finish the entire thing (as I did--once I start a book I have to read it through) the only non-conflicting advice you will receive is that if you want to write you should try to write a little everyday, screenwriters should read a lot, most scripts are rejected because of bad writing, producers and studio execs will listen to pitches by new talent, you need to get an agent, and winning a screenwriting contest doesn't mean you have a script that is worthy of being made into a movie.
I love Final Draft, but if you want to read this book, I'd check it out from the library and spend your money on watching another movie or buying an actual screenplay.
101 Questions Answered By Industry Professionals .......2004-10-06
Enhanced with an accompanying install demo disc, Final Draft Presents Ask The Pros: Screenwriting: 101 Questions Answered By Industry Professionals is the collaborative compilation of joint-editors Howard Meibach and Paul Duran. covers everything from formatting to deal making. Applicable to screenwriting for film and television productions alike, professionals from ICM, UTA, Writers & Artists Group International, DreamWorks, MGM, Paramount, and other production companies were tapped to explain every aspect of developing a screenplay, including what to do with what's gone wrong. If you aspire to write a screenplay worthy of production, then give a close and careful reading to Final Draft Presents Ask The Pros: Screenwriting.
What Were They Thinking?.......2004-08-18
If you're a screenwriter and have ever thought, "what were they thinking?" this book is for you. "Ask the Pros: Screenwriting" is a total insider's POV of Hollywood. Written in an informative Q&A style, chapters include answers by film and TV writers; producers, development and studio execs; readers/story editors; agents and managers and even attorneys. Also there's a mentors section. If you can handle "the truth about Hollywood," this is a must-read.
Finally, real insight into the process.......2004-06-29
One of the best books I've read on the subject of screenwriting. Not a "how to" on the technical aspects of the craft (although there is a wonderful section on this included at the end for the novice), the interviews illustrate the battle that all writers face: a blank page. Written with humor and honesty from some of the best in the business, this book is highly recommended for anyone who truly loves to write.
Must-have for screenwriters.......2004-06-15
The book contains lots of different opinions on the business, which is why I think it is so useful. Since there's
no one way to break into the movie business, this book is invaluable. You've never seen a book with so many pros offering their thoughts on the subject of writing and selling to Hollywood. A must-have book for any writer interested in breaking into the movies.

Good for beginners...........2001-11-09
All I could say is "Been there, Done that". It is more for couples who are starting to spice up there relationship. I found nothing new and disagreed (and so did my husband) with one of the chapters regarding a male taboo.
Not what I expected.......2001-11-09
After reading the book, all I could say was "Been there, done that". It is more for beginners who are first trying to spice up there marriage. I found nothing new or helpful and even disagreed (and so did my husband) on one of the chapters suggestion.
Don't give this book too early in the relationship.......2000-06-15
My current fiance gave me this book after we had been dating for less than 1 month (as a X-Mas gift). I didn't know how to interpret his gesture, and he left for over 2 weeks after giving it to me. If you do give it, be sure to do so IN PERSON! She has some wonderful ideas in this book, just as I said before, be careful how you give this....and definately don't give it as a first and only X-Mas gift!
Definitely for beginners.......2000-03-26
I found the book to be just a tad above the level of those true confession magazines, intriquing to me as a teenager but not sophisticated enough to be of interest to me as a mature adult. The presentation of the sexual vignettes seemed contrived. Perhaps the book would be helpful to younger, less experienced lovers.
This book definately opens the lines of communication!!!.......1999-06-11
This book was great for my boyfriend and I. He was the type that thought he knew it all, much to his surprise he realizes there is more than bedroom sex. It began the wheels of intamacy turning and they have not stopped yet. Some of the games are basic but they also give new ideas to old games, and it touches on some "forbidden" areas that alot of people would have difficulty talking about without the book as an aide. It opens the doors to excitiment and fun.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-07-24
HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO READ MUCH OF THE BOOK. RECEIVED PROMPTLY, AND IN GREAT SHAPE
A moving target.......2007-04-10
Writing any kind of book about Amazon is like trying to hit a moving target -- print books become dated the minute they are published while the Internet world keeps growing and changing. This book demonstrates that inevitability moreso than others, but even so, wears its advantages on its sleeves. It is a testament to the informative nature of this book that it still holds so much value even when Amazon itself has changed to render so many of the specifics out-dated. Nevertheless, the guts of the content is still meatier than most books you find on the subject of online sales. The author would do well to consider a revised edition. What do you say, Michael? This level of insight on some of the new features like Seller Central and Amapedia? I'd buy it! - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified
Good introduction.......2007-03-07
Knowing absolutely nothing about selling on Amazon.com when I ordered this book, I found it to be very informative and a good introduction. Perhaps the information in this book can be found on the Amazon.com website as other reviewers have noted, but if so I couldn't find it and felt the $17 price tag was well worth it. The book covers many different methods of selling on Amazon.com, including auctions, zShop, and Marketplace, along with advertising, the Associates program and the Advantage program. The one glaring omission as far as I was concerned (and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) was shipping. There are only a couple vague references to how shipping costs are calculated and collected, leaving me with more questions than answers.
useful? i disagree.......2007-02-01
maybe for absolute beginners it's ok. i thought a lot of the material was dated. don't pay retail!
Great book! Very easy to follow. If you have the inventory, this book is a must own.......2007-01-07
I could not put this book down once I started reading it, and you won't either! Teaches you how to sell your products on Amazon, with a very easy to learn, in-depth approach. I still carry it with me every time I do anything on Amazon.
When I 1st got the book I went straight for chapter #10. Basically, 'How to get your Amazon Account up & running.' But, if I had the chance to do it over again I would definitely start from the beginning. Author: Michael Bellomo advise is simple and to the point. Bellomo answers all questions you might have on starting an account based on your specific needs; whether you are a small, medium or large business.
The only suggestion I might recommend, is a little in-sight in to the best way for a small business to upload UPC/ISBN #'s to an excel spreadsheet. Using only 1 or 2 PC's. What kind of Barcode Scanner/Program do you recommend, for the money. We had a Dell that came with the computer, that we found out was a $750 piece of junk.
Other than that, this book is a must read for anyone interested in selling on Amazon.
