    Book Description

Few paintings inspire the kind of intense study and speculation as Garden of Earthly Delights, the luminous triptych by Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. The painting has been interpreted as a heretical masterpiece, an opulent illustration of the Creation and a premonition of the end of the world. In this new flexi-cover edition of the book, renowned art historian Hans Belting offers a radical reinterpretation of the work, which he sees not as apocalyptic, but utopian, portraying how the world would exist had the Fall not happened. Taking readers through each panel, Belting discusses various schools of thought and explores Bosch's life and times. This fascinating study is an important contribution to the literature and theory surrounding one of the world's most enigmatic artists.

    5 out of 5 stars A Bosch Savior.......2001-01-22

As anyone who has studied art history is painfully aware, the world of Hieronymus Bosch is extremely complicated. This was a wonderful introduction to that difficult world. It gave insights into the symbolism of his works without being confusing and illustrates them with number of full color photographs and details. An excellent laymen's guide to the painter.

4 out of 5 stars Bosch, short and sweet.......1999-12-10

This book lays out lots of the hidden meanings in the painters strange iconography, some of which are personal feelings. Of all the painters to write about, he chose only Bosch. What I particularly appreciate about the book is how all of the sections of the painting in which he discusses and blown up and right there for you to look at as you read (short and sweet) I found a lot of facts that were missed by other authors/critics of this outlandish painter. Well done Peter Beagle!

Officers Reed and Malloy would certainly be interested in some of the sneakiest beasts to ever roam the metropolis, aka the Feline Felons. Bad cats, after all, are the current rage, and this book has the rap sheet on all the unusual suspects.

Author Debbie Keller knows a bad kitty when she sees one. Her uncompromisingly funny book pairs candid photos of cats caught in the act with clever descriptions of their crimes. Even the occasional, "Is this the face of a cat who would toss a guinea pig out a window?" protestation crops up, too. This cat patrol blotter of feline crimes includes reports such as:

Prowler-A midnight prowler was reported in the vicinity of garbage cans on trash day. Police artists have released this composite silhouette: Suspect is a middle-aged male, brown hair, yellow eyes, stocky build, 91/2 inches tall. Answers to the name of "Here Kitty" or the sound of an opening can.

Adorable kitty cats do more than sleep in the sun. They're resting up after a night of no good . . . and Feline Felons has "Just the facts, ma'am."

Entertaining America is a captivating look at one of the longest-running and most provocative public discussions in America: the relationship between the nation's Jews and its entertainment media. This colorfully written, lavishly illustrated book surveys how Jews have participated in--and been identified with--American movies, radio, and television from the nickelodeon era at the turn of the twentieth century to the present day.

Throughout, the tone is lively, the design is playful, and key points are visually enhanced by stills, publicity photos, and memorabilia. This anthology of original analyses and primary texts covers a wide range of topics, including the multiple versions of The Jazz Singer, the saga of the Hollywood movie moguls, the irrepressible Goldbergs of radio and television fame, the representation of the Holocaust, how Charlie Chaplin and other non-Jewish stars became "virtual Jews," and the dazzling success of the television series Seinfeld. There is also an illustrated gallery of more than twenty Jewish-American stars from Theda Bara to Adam Sandler.

The principal authors, J. Hoberman and Jeffrey Shandler, examine not only the history of Jews in the industry but also the steady stream of richly varied voices that have had something to say about this history--in fan magazines as well as literary fiction, by religious and political leaders as well as journalists, historians, and Jews in the entertainment business themselves.

Entertaining America, which accompanies an exhibition opening at The Jewish Museum, is itself tremendously entertaining while providing the most expansive, authoritative look at this fascinating subject. In its pages, readers will find ample material to help them formulate their own responses to this frank, contentious, multilayered discussion.

You people that flame J Patrick don't get it. He's the FIRST to admit that he's deviating from mathematics. His premise is NOT about making you rich. and it is certainly not about mathematics. after YOU play 2 million hands of blackjack and report back how effective splitting 8's Vs 10 is, I will do it. If you play one hand of blackjack per minute 24 hours a day you'll get to the 2 millionth hand in about 4 years. Since I hit the tables about once a month- I'll just go ahead and play for short term gains. I'll hit the 8-8 Vs 10 and lose one bet instead of two and just move on to the next hand. I'll make this claim and stand by it until one of you mathematicians can provide solid evidence against it: "If you study patrick's blackjack books and do NOT deviate what-so-ever you WILL consistently come out ahead, or break even, or incur a small loss. you will never come up broke and demoralized." and THAT is the REAL premise behind patrick's writings. He's writing to the guys who have no money- but insist on going to the casino every so often. he's writing to the roofers, painters, cops, fireman and plumbers of northern NJ who insist on driving 3 hours to AC with a few hundred in their pocket whose wives would shoot them if they found out. ...

5 out of 5 stars Still making money with John Patrick's methods!.......2003-04-16

For all the people that gave this book a negative review, they definitely did not get his style of writing. Not once does he ever mention playing hunches which one reader wrote. Also, he never mentions "playing with the casinos money" as someone else wrote. Once you win that money it's your money. The casino doesn't say they're playing with your money when they win.

I have been winning consistently for many years using John Patrick's methods. I have become an emotionless robot when I play. Every move I make is pre-determined (no hunches) and every bet I make is pre-determined. It may not be as much fun playing the game, but the three hour ride home is great knowing how much more money is in my pocket.

He is the only author to say you don't always have to split Aces and Eights. I have read the other reviewers talking about computers and statistics. My degree in finance has me familiar with both, but it was only John Patrick's common sense explanations that stopped me from getting burnt anymore playing those hands. How many times have you split these hands only to get killed? But, it was the thing that you were "supposed to do". He makes you look at why you should be making moves in a logical sense, not because the computer said that you should and that's the way it has been handed down.

In conclusion, I can only say that this book has totally changed the way I look at blackjack and has definitely made me a winner, sometimes in less than twenty minutes. If you are open to new methods and want to win consistently, then read this book. If you are closed minded, need computer print-outs and statistics, or just don't feel that you will ever have the dicipline to be a winner, then don't read this book.

                              5 out of 5 stars Very realistic/conservative approach!.......2003-02-27

This is the first John Patrick book I have read and I think his system is great. I have read other books on blackjack and they make sense as well but they make it far too complicated to actually remember while you are sitting at a BJ table. Do you honestly think you can keep 3 or 4 different counts at a table? Not a chance! Yes, the more complicated systems claim that they are more accurate but how much more accurate can you get if you can't be perfect at what you are doing? In fact, you will be far less proficient than a regular perfect basic strategy player who isn't using a system or counting. He touches on the fact that some of us are more aggressive and some are less aggressive and he has different betting styles for each of these type of people.

I highly recommend his book, practice his system (because you won't remember everything right off the bat and you will see that not nothing is 'EASY', even his system requires a lot of practice).

The other thing I wanted to mention is about the mathematical aspect of BJ. John doesn't relay on mathematics but instead points out that any game you play, you will encounter a trend or streak. No matter how you look at it, it happens. You flip a coin and the odds are 50-50 that you will get heads or tails but does this mean you will always get heads, then tails, then heads, etc. NO! You might get 5 heads in a row, then all tails. These are the same type of streaks that occur in BJ and other casino games. John makes us capitalize on these streaks and it works! He answers all my questions in the book.

                              2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2002-07-19

Boy, is this Patrick guy bad. In fact, he is quite well-known now for his bad blackjack advice. The problem is, he writes in a style that sounds convincing and "common sense".

People, you cannot use "common sense" in blackjack. Some of Patrick's plays are just plain wrong. These plays cannot be judged right or wrong because you happen to win some hands by playing that way. There are HUGE variances in blackjack, and any play or money management system can win in the short term. The only way to know if a play is correct, in terms of probability and long term winning percentage, is by mathematical proof or large computer simulations. Otherwise, you're just wishing it to be true. There's a very good reason casinos make billions of dollars every year. Patrick's book does 2 things
                              1) makes him money
                              2) ensures that the casinos stay in business so he can make more money selling more blackjack books.

Is everything in this book wrong? No, most of it is right. But why buy a book like this when there are many more that get it ALL right? Read Wong, or Schlesinger, or Griffin, or Uston, or other proven authors. It really doesn't matter how easy this book is to read if it gives bad plays. And it doesn't matter that you went into the casino and won using Patrick's methods, because in this game your experience is too short to count as valid and meaningful in terms of probability. If you don't understand that, there's no hope for you anyway.

Can you explain why you are more likely to get a blackjack with 1 deck than 6? Do you understand why preferential shuffling can hurt you? Do you understand why you should hit your 16 against the dealer's 7, even though you will probably lose the hand? If you understand all that, then you sure don't need this book. If you don't, then go find another book that explains the REAL fundamentals of blackjack. Anyone can win at blackjack - even total idiots - in the short term. Only a few actually play the game with a mathematical advantage though.

1 out of 5 stars All Words No Numbers.......2001-03-28

The author recommends an inaccurate Basic Strategy (Hit, Stand, Double, Split, Insurance). He justifies the deviations as being conservative. They are conservative in that they will reduce your bankroll variations but in the long run they will cost you money.

He recommends betting patterns based on whether you are up or down or if you think you are on a streak. This contradicts the law of independent events described in the first chapter of any statistics text (past wins or losses give no indication of future results). The only benefit from his advice in this regard is that he gives many instances in which to quit gambling (which is good advise anytime you do not have a mathematical advantage).

Advantages in blackjack are small, few, and far between. They can be taken advantage of only if you learn and apply specific concepts: Game selection (most can't be beaten) ACCURATE basic strategy (to minimize your disadvantage off the top of the deck), Increasing your bet when YOU have the advantage (NOT if you think you are on a winning streak).

This author gives the impression that the house's mathematical advantage is irrelevant and if you apply a betting pattern you can beat any game. The gambling phenomenon is built on this MYTH. Sure, anyone can sit down and get lucky. However, in the long run, no betting pattern can beat a mathematical casino advantage.

This book is a colorful read if you don't care for quantitative concepts and want to believe that streaks can be predicted. Casinos will roll out the red carpet and beg for your action. However, if you want to play blackjack with an advantage, start with competent books like Knock-Out Blackjack and suggested readings therein. Then your biggest concern will be getting barred.

Taking the mystery out of Six Sigma implementation

This easy-to-understand reference in the popular Demystified series teaches the methods of Six Sigma, explains their applications, and tests expertise without confusing statistics and formulas. Expert Paul Keller and Six Sigma guru Tom Pyzdek describe helpful tools for Six Sigma teams, identifying their uses, limitations, and application during multiple stages of DMAIC. They also outline additional tools for full effectiveness and provide necessary calculations and assumptions. In addition, they provide:

4 out of 5 stars Brown Belt for Now.......2005-09-12

Six Sigma is a tool used to measure quality for the purpose of eliminating non-conformance or defects in a process or product as I see it. Data collection is very important for analysis. Thus, data collection systems designs are important to this end. The statistical representation of Six Sigma is really the best benchmark to quantify and evaluate process performance. This book ultimately must rely on that fact. I found this book's reasoning similar to that of trying to define Standard Deviation in words. Standard Deviation is a formula. I did find this book thought provoking and I liked the fact that such concepts as Six Sigma are still alive. Most companies fail because they bring Six Sigma in but then give up on it. In my area of the country I have spoken to so many people who no longer use it even though their companies say otherwise. If you want to learn more about Six Sigma this really is not a bad book.

5 out of 5 stars A statistical approach to project management.......2005-09-12

This book is part of the DeMYSTiFied series. These books are a little more sophisticated than the "For Dummies" or "Idiots" books. Of course they are sneaky with statements like "No fancy formulas" or "No staggering statistics" both statements that must have been written by rocket scientists. That is what this book is "Plain monstrous Formulas" and overwhelming statistics." But the truth is there is no other way to explain "Six Sigma."

The book seems more geared towards Quality than projects but the same thinking process is there. Just as there is a TQM mystic and now PMI's PMBOK we have a Six Sigma culture with it own language that also usurps terms as green and blank belt.

In the end they take what should be a strait forward mathematical problem and attempt to apply it to the unknown to come up with a working risk analysis.

Using this method most projects will survive nicely on two to four sigmas. However this is one tool that I would what to know is at my disposal when tackling the next project. And this book does a good job of getting you off the ground.

3 out of 5 stars Overly Ambitious (after 20 yrs still not buying the idea).......2005-08-08

First rule of selling. Sell to the top! I guess that's why this book continually talks about Executive involvement and Management involvement. Sorry, business theory is moving back to "Managers making it easy for all employees to succeed in their jobs." So stop selling your consulting time to the Executives and making them feel important.

Most of this book is on project management. And this book's explanation of project management is seriously lacking. This is a deep and complex subject please don't think you can give some of this technique's buzz-words and walk away.

Some of the statistical references are good however, the application of these are not fully explained.

Remember selling ERP and Y2K is over, so time to sell Sarbanes, 6sigma, etc. Scare the Exec that they are going down and make some easy money. Maybe its good for business to try some kind of change even if its not the correct method of change.
