An intriguing paperback of over eight hundred character marks and amazingly NO INDEX. Another reviewer has noted that they are not examples of pristine artwork, well, yes very true but most of them are less than two inches deep and I don't really think it detracts from the books worth.

Most of the pages have nine marks and some very clean typography for the captions, there are several spreads through the book with color photos of three dimensional marks and these pages make a neat break from the majority in black and white. If you want to see a whole load of three dimensional trademarks have a look at the lovely 'What a Character' by Warren Dotz and Jim Morton, a book with dozens of color photos of American advertising icons.

The chapter on anthropomorphic marks I found fascinating, here designers really had to stretch their creativity to make human forms out of company products. On page fifteen a 1962 'Mr Wirewell' from the Electrical Manufacturers Association was a face within a lightning flash with a service hat on top.

A fun book for designers and lovers of Americana...like me.

In response to the other review, i have to agree...it isnt so much a book than a collected overview of images, mostly in black and white....this book is mainly a reference book, a catalog of icons....which is fine for what it is. The reason the imagery is in most cases poor quality, is because i believe the author obtained the public access images from the Library of Congress. The book is what it is...its a simple reference guide....it is very concise though...most of the trademarks are very obscure and little known....

Other books that may satiate your needs, "What a Character!" is a more visual and informative showcase, mainly of collectibles, as well as the upcoming "Mascotography", which showcases the history of all the greats in an encyclopedic format....

While this book contains hundreds upon hundreds of character trademarks, very few of them are rendered well. A very small portion are clean, sharp and crisp. Poor quality graphics are to be expected of those marks from the '30s, '40s and '50s but even the latest marks were poorly rendered. Most of the figures looked as if they had been through a copy machine 5 or 6 times before publication or poorly traced with a black pen. Where is the style in the strokes? Where is the artistry?
I think this book is a case of QUANTITY rather than QUALITY. This book could have used some serious editing to include only 200 of the best and most influential and successful character marks of the century with more about their history and evolution. I was impressed however at the painstaking dilligence in compiling such a large library of trademarks.

      In this pioneering volume, Howell addresses the extent to which fictional characters are legally recognized and protected as intellectual property. Through a judicious selection of cases chosen for their bearing on the popular arts, the author reviews the basic legal principles involved--copyright, trademark, unfair competition, and contract law--and analyzes their applications to fictional characters. In addition to tracing the evolution of the law relating to the protection of fictional characters, Howell explores the feasibility of isolating characters and protecting them via stringent copyright and/or trademark laws, addresses character merchandising and the associated legal issues, and suggests legal reforms aimed at protecting the creator. Detailed case information serves both to illustrate the legal principles and actions discussed and to stand as a model for the proprietors of future characters. Divided into two major sections, the volume begins by offering a comprehensive introduction to intellectual property law. Specific topics addressed include basic concepts of property, statutory protection of intellectual property, elements of an infringement action, defenses to copyright infringement, unfair competition, and the application of trademark principles to literary properties. In the second section, Howell analyzes the extent to which the fictional character is legally regarded as intellectual property. She reviews situations in which copyright and trademark law have been invoked to protect the creator of a fictional character, examines cases involving such well-known characters as the Lone Ranger, Superman, and the crew of the Starship Enterprise, and presents an extended analysis of the case of Tarzan. Finally, Howell considers whether right of publicity and merchandising offer additional protection for fictional characters. In the concluding chapter, she offers an analysis of copyright decisions and a proposal for their reconciliation. Both practicing attorneys and students of entertainment law will find Howell's work an important contribution to the professional literature.

                      This is a fabulous book for screenwriters and film buffs. It is an excellent examination of the western genre from a socio-historical perspective. Lenihan peels back the layers of the genre decade by decade in a thought provoking and relevant way. Ultimately this is a book that teaches more than just a single genre; it is guidebook for enjoying and dissecting any and all genres.

                                An awesome upgrade to GURPS 3rd Edition. Full colored and illustrated book, some new rules added and some old rules banished, creating a better balanced and understandable system.

                                5 out of 5 stars The best Gurps compilation.......2007-01-10


                                The "Gurps 4th Edition" just fixed all "Gurps 3rd Edition" weakness. The two books are so great. The color and hardcover look and feel are some big diference between the books and the the old versions.

                                The bad comercial thing: are two books, and you need to have both if you want to be a Game Master.

                                The "Characters Guide" have lots of resources to make a rich character and the "Campaigns Guide" have a good Game Master stuff.

                                If you want to have some good RPG System, well, you need to buy "Gurps 4th Edition", but you need some time and practice, cause the game system is so rich, then the rules number is high.

                                The idea behind GURPS is that it provides a set of core rules that can be adapted to any setting (thus the "universal" part of General Universal Role-Playing). It does a good job of this, although it is better suited to a somewhat more realistic feeling than heroic wackiness. A human isn't going to take too many sword hits and shrug them off.

                                The strong point of GURPS is character generation. Players are allotted a number of points to build their characters, and may buy characteristics, skills and "Advantages" (things like the ability to use magic, being wealthy, or any of hundreds of other things), and may get additional points by taking "Disadvantages."

                                This new 4th edition is in by far most ways an improvement over 3rd edition. They closed a lot of loopholes and fixed a number of less-than-optimal things. I like the changes to combat especially.

                                There are a couple of things I would have done differently.

                                1) They took the skills out of psionics (and every other supernatural system, for that matter), making it purely advantage based, but they left magic as skill based. They really should have made each magic spell into an advantage too, because now it's not as well balanced with the rest of the system as it could be. Couple this with the fact that you can now take IQ at 10 points a level if you don't take the associated Will and Perception, and you can easily have a Wizard character with an IQ of 17 or so in a 100 point campaign, who can buy spells at a very high skill level with 1 point.

                                2) They should have dumped the "earn character points through study" system. Yes, it's easy to just ignore it, but if you get stuck with a GM who goes by the book you may very well find yourself wasting a lot of time with tedious accounting issues.

                                4th edition institutes a good set of rules that allows the GM to create powers and abilities by modifying Advantages with an extensive set of Enhancements and Limitations. This is really nice for the workaholic GM, but the GM who lacks huge amounts of free time is going to be hoping for supplements with some a lot of sample powers worked out for him or her.

                                Well written, nice arts, easy to understand system, easy to learn and flexible. Much much more flexible than d20, and also much more realistic. Having played d&d for some times now, I was getting rather frustrated about the lousy you-hit-me-I-hit-you combat system. With Gurps, things are much more dynamic. Give it a chance, you won't regret it.

                                The fourth edition of GURPS doesn't disappoint. This time, the basic book has been split into two volumes. This one deals with the creation of characters and can be considered to be the player's guide. The genius of the GURPS system is that anything is possible. If you can dream of it, you can play it. It's a great system for those who would like to establish a game with a sense of independence and creativity. If you haven't tried it, I recommend that you give it a try.

                                GURPS is one of the most, truly, generic systems around... and that's no suprise since it's the first. In this fourth edition, SJ games brings to bear their 20+ years of experience with this system and delivers an excellent addition to the GURPS line. The system is fully able to be employed in any genre from fantasy, science-fiction or horror and it flexible enough for even the most creative of gamers. If it has any weaknesses they would be:
                                1. too many options: some gamers might be overwhelmed by the number of options available. Keep in mind that the game can be as simple or as complex as you like.
                                2. all of the "flavor" is on you: GURPS (since it is generic...duh) is not set up to convey flavor through the design of its character sheets, the naming of abilities or the graphics in the books. Flavor is ALL up to the game-mast

                                ... on the otherhand, perhaps those are strengths.

                                The "Gurps 4th Edition" just fixed all "Gurps 3rd Edition" weakness. The two books are so great. The color and hardcover look and feel are some big diference between the books and the the old versions.

                                The bad comercial thing: are two books, and you need to have both if you want to be a Game Master.

                                The "Characters Guide" have lots of resources to make a rich character and the "Campaigns Guide" have a good Game Master stuff.

                                If you want to have some good RPG System, well, you need to buy "Gurps 4th Edition", but you need some time and practice, cause the game system is so rich, then the rules number is high.

                                While the book is great, I have received no less than 3 damaged versions of this book from Amazon. Clearly their entire stock is messed up as each replacement they have sent has the same problems. Namely, sticking pages where glue leaked from the spine during binding, scuffed and soiled covers, and heavy dings or crushed spines. Order from someone else!

                                This book 2 of the GURPS basic set (4TH EDITION) The last edition was a single book of 256 pages plus instant characters section, but so much material was add to the new edition it would have weighed in at a total of 576 pages, while suitable for stoping bullets, a but unwieldy for gameplay, so Steve Jackson games have divided everything a player has to have is in book one, basic system rules and everything for character creation, just enough combat to get a player into the game. The rest of combat is this book. This book goes into detail for what a GameMaster needs to know about physical feats and combat (in greater detail). It covers vehicles and technology. It includes stats for animals and some monsters, along with a guide for world design and Game Mastering itself. "Tool kit chapters let the GM make artifacts, character abilities, and entire game worlds (in fact an infinity of worlds, alternate, parallel, cross-genre, etc.) Don't get me wrong this is just for GMs. Players who enjoy detail and the creative side of the game will find this book inspiration for beginning their own campaigns. My point is it's not required, but Basic Set GURPS: Characters and Campaigns are designed to work together, pages and chapters are consecutively numbered and the index covers both books and repeated in both. SJ games has made the system easy to play, easy to learn and easy to get hooked. They have also made the new Basic Set easier to carry around. GURPS stands for Generic Universal Role Playing System and it is just that, it is the perfect for linking already existing d20 systems, creating cross-genre campaigns or making campaigns based on any book, movie, TV series or concept you or SJ Games can brainstorm (before the Wizards of the Coast edition we used GURPS to run Star Wars and Dr. Who campaigns).

                                www.sjgames.com/e23/ is an excellent resource for pre-generated PDS ranging from short adventures to whole sourcebooks. Like D&D, there is a considerable amount of GURPS material out there, either new and updated or old and out-of-print, anything you can imagine (Fantasy, the Prisoner, Horror, Swashbuckler, and loads of other supplements). The GURPS main web site is good too, www.sjgames.com/gurps/ most books and supplements hotlink from Amazon.

                                Steve Jackson took a good crack at a system to cover the basics of any type of gaming with having a few generic abilities, and basic it around skills, and just some garden variety dice, and not many of.

                                A lot faster and easier to use than something like the HERO system, so points for that, and there are a huge number of decent and interesting supplements if you want to delve in depth into any one setting.

                                I have been playing RPG's for almost 10 years now, and it is no small thing to say that this is my personal favorite. I have played D&D, Rifts, Hero, Starwars, World of Darkness, BESM, Marvel Universe, and various others, but this is the one that is my personal choice.

                                It is a generic game (could you tell from its title) which means that you are responsible for settings and campaign ideas. This can be anything from a fantasy, to sci-fi, to a combination of anything you can imagine.

                                Character generation is strait forward and easy to understand when you get the hang of it, and your characters actually feel like true story characters with their own strengths and weaknesses built in to the mechanics of the game.

                                It is fun.

                                It may well be a function of the MTV attention spans and the faster lives we all live, however, I have roleplayed for 20 years now and used and created many systems. Gurps is just too cumbersome to use efficiently and making a character can take several hours if you're particular. The backround info is good though and most people I know buy the Gurps stuff just a source info or background material rather than to actually use them as rulebooks in a GURPS campaign.

                                The GURPS system's big selling point, of course, is its flexibility; it's very easy to tailor it to any type of campaign world. It's also quick and easy to learn. The advantage/disadvantage system works quite well and allows the creation of all kinds of interesting characters, without limiting players to a fixed set of character classes. The basic 3d6 mechanic means no fumbling with huge handfuls of dice. Finally, the whole system is balanced to a nicety--I don't think I've ever found a GURPS game mechanic that I thought was seriously "broken."

                                There are a few drawbacks to GURPS, however. The biggest, in my view, is that it doesn't cope very well with high-powered campaigns. Combat runs fairly smoothly at normal levels, but when people start getting active defense ratings of 14+, the battles degenerate into turn after turn of waiting for someone to roll a critical success on the attack, because otherwise everything gets dodged/blocked/parried. Combat involving large numbers of opponents is apt to drag on endlessly. Magic, while extremely versatile and useful, offers few options for spectacle and drama; all magic is on a "skirmish" level. You'll never see a GURPS mage laying waste to armies or blotting out the light of the sun.

                                The other problem I've found with GURPS is that it's generic and therefore rather bland; it's up to the GM and the players to provide the "personality" of a campaign. This is particularly evident in the sourcebooks, which offer plenty of tools for world-building, but not much in the way of actual worlds.

                                If you prefer a lower-powered game with lots of subtleties, and are willing to put in the work to design the game world yourself (or to convert it from another system), I don't think you can do better than GURPS. If you want heroic high fantasy, stick with D&D or similar systems. I usually use D&D when running fantasy and GURPS for modern or futuristic settings.

                                My playing group has been using GURPS 3rd edtion for nearly 10 years now, and the only little grudge we have with the system is the need to peruse through several books during character generation. Although it has its advantages, like when a player is looking at the Basic set, another one can use the Compendium and so one.

                                But I disgress. I wanted to inform you that Steve Jacson Games is finally releasing the fourth edition of GURPS, debuting with a two volumes Basic Set. Here's an excerpt from Steve Jackson Games :
