    Book Description

Conceptual art was one of the most influential art movements of the second half of the twentieth century. In this book Alexander Alberro traces its origins to the mid-1960s, when its principles were first articulated by the artists Dan Graham, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner, and others. One of Alberro's central arguments is that the conceptual art movement was founded not just by the artists but also by the dealer Seth Siegelaub. Siegelaub promoted the artists, curated groundbreaking shows, organized symposia and publications, and in many ways set the stage for another kind of entrepreneur: the freelance curator. Alberro examines both Siegelaub's role in launching the careers of artists who were making "something from nothing" and his tactful business practices, particularly in marketing and advertising.

Alberro draws on close readings of artworks produced by key conceptual artists in the mid- to late 1960s. He places the movement in the social context of the rebellion against existing cultural institutions, as well as the increased commercialization and globalization of the art world. The book ends with a discussion of one of Siegelaub's most material and least ephemeral contributions, the Artist's Reserved Rights Transfer and Sale Agreement, which he wrote between 1969 and 1971. Designed to limit the inordinate control of collectors, galleries, and museums by increasing the artist's rights, the Agreement unwittingly codified the overlap between capitalism and the arts.

This book is cheap, and might be a good buy for someone taking a class and wanting a refresher, but I doubt it. There are other nice books out there that made me a lot more excited about this great craft!

I was lucky to be in Denver when Mr. Litton was signing his book. Very gracious man and his book is a must for any Denver Bronco fan, and especially Elway fans. Mr. Litton is a sports cartoonist for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and has covered the Elway years from the beginning through his recent induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This book even has a few never-before published cartoons. I would recommend the book highly.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on parenting.......2005-01-24

This lively and insightful book chronicles the ups and downs of parenting, from the breathless anticipation of "Are we pregnant?" to dealing with adolescents - retold with humor and candor, and sustained with faith.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Humor with Depth, Intelligence and Guts.......2004-05-22

Words can't convey the gratitude I have for this book. I was one of those moms tempted to take my life as a parent for granted, wishing little mundane moments away. Lindy Batdorf's awesome book not only made me laugh outloud, but touched me deeply in many ways. She's right--sometimes, as a parent there just aren't any doggone roses to stop and sniff; sometimes, on this old rough highway called Parenting, there's just that smelly asphalt--but with the right attitude, even that asphalt can smell alright when we realize how wonderful the ride can be.
This book contains lifechanging treasure for any reader, because the truths are universal and will affect the way you see "little things" forever.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and insightful!.......2003-12-14

Lindy Batdorf crafts a laugh out loud masterpiece about parenthood. Best of all, Stop and Smell the Asphalt is as insightful as it is humorous. Lindy reminds us all to count our blessings and to truly enjoy the journey of parenthood (before it slips away). This would make a great gift to any parent (new, fatigued, or otherwise).

5 out of 5 stars Another Erma Bombeck writer for us to enjoy........2003-12-09

I have always enjoyed reading the hilarious books and newspaper columns by Erma Bombeck. Now we have another!
This author tells such funny stories about so many different experiences. Not only was I entertained but I was learning some good life lessons too. Stop and Smell the Asphalt is a book that every mom should have.

5 out of 5 stars Laugher On The Road To Reality!.......2003-12-06

This book is not just for those who are parents! It is also for anyone who has ever been a child! I have been reading Lindy Batdorf's book and loving every minute of it. I can't seem to put it down! I find myself totally relating to the stories she tells about children and parents and the things we all went through just to grow up! So much of life's realities and precious moments are included in this book. It is a book that contains huge doses of the hope that we all need today. Hope that says it is ok when we fall down and get our knees scraped and our shins kicked from life, because there are moms, dads and special people waiting with open arms to love and help us get back up! Everyone needs to believe in that! It makes me appreciate my mom and all she went through just to raise me!

          Book Description

This innovative book shows how Asian American filmmakers and videomakers frame and are framed by history—how they define and are defined by cinematic projections of Asian American identity. Combining close readings of films and videos, sophisticated cultural analyses, and detailed production histories that reveal the complex forces at play in the making and distributing of these movies, Identities in Motion offers an illuminating interpretative framework for assessing the extraordinary range of Asian American films produced in North America.
Peter X Feng considers a wide range of works—from genres such as detective films to romantic comedies to ethnographic films, documentaries, avant-garde videos, newsreels, travelogues, and even home movies. Feng begins by examining movies about three crucial moments that defined the American nation and the roles of Asian Americans within it: the arrival of Chinese and Japanese women in the American West and Hawai’i; the incorporation of the Philippines into the U.S. empire; and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. In subsequent chapters Feng discusses cinematic depictions of ideological conflicts among Asian Americans and of the complex forces that compel migration, extending his nuanced analysis of the intersections of sexuality, ethnicity, and nationalist movements.
Identities in Motion illuminates the fluidity of Asian American identities, expressing the diversity and complexity of Asian Americans—including Filipinos, Indonesians, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Laotians, Indians, and Koreans—from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.

            Book Description

While some Asian American films and filmmakers are beginning to achieve acclaim in mainstream U.S. culture, neither academic scholars nor society as a whole has sufficiently taken account of the history of this rich and growing body of cinematic production. In "Asian America Through the Lens", Jun Xing accomplishes the colossal task of surveying Asian American cinema for the first time, allowing its aesthetic, cultural, and political diversity and continuities to emerge. Unique insight into Asian American experience in both mainstream and alternative film production is provided by textual analysis as well as by the voices of filmmakers and actors themselves. With constant attention to the specificities of Asian American histories and cultures, Xing engages a broad range of issues and theoretical perspectives, drawing insight from such bodies of scholarship as African American and Latino film studies, Marxian cultural theory, ethnic studies and the politics of representation, and post-structuralist and feminist discourses.

            Book Description

Following the successful volumes of Song on Record, this book surveys all the recordings of major choral works from the Monteverdi Vespers to Britten's War Requiem. Discussion of the various interpretations on record is preceded, in each chapter, by informed criticism of the work concerned, including--where appropriate--a clarification of editions, revisions, etc. (all the many changes in Messiah are, for instance, described in detail). The coverage of recordings is exhaustive and its value is enhanced by a detailed discography, with up-to-date numbers of each recording. Each contributor is an authority within his or her specialist area and collectively, their insights and observations of leading music critics make the book invaluable to record collectors, music lovers and anyone with an interest in changing tastes and styles of musical performance. Alan Blyth, formerly with The Times (London) is now the music critic of The Daily Telegraph. He is on the editorial board of Opera, the editor of the three-volume Opera on Record and two-volume Song on Record (CUP), as well as author of Remembering Britten and Introduction to Wagner's Ring.

5 out of 5 stars Reliable reviews of choral music recordings from Monteverdi to Britten.......2006-04-11

This book is full of informative, reasoned and well written reviews of choral music recordings up to 1991. The sections on Bach (B minor Mass, St. Matthew & St. John Passions) and Handel's Messiah by Teri Noel Towe, on Mozart's Requiem by Ingrid Grimes, on Verdi's Manzoni Requiem by Alan Blythe and Brahms German Requiem by Alan Steane are particularly fine. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Highly innovative, original, takes you back to simpler fun........1999-09-13

Time seems to be our most valuable asset in today's high tech world, and unfortunately some-times our children suffer due to our lack of it. This book takes us back to the kinder and simpler days of having fun with our parents. Simple projects, innovative fun, clever ideas, inexpensive and original amusement. Best of all, in most instances, NO ELECTRICITY, CABLE, NAME BRANDS REQUIRED! Kids today are so used to having things do it all for them that they forget how to use thier own creativity and make simple pleasurable past-times with thier parents. Parents also today in most instances are so stressed out in trying to provide our kids with all the latest gadgets, electronics, and name brands that the actual time they have available to spend with thier kids is nominal. This wonderful book reminds us that we need to prior itize our time, re-think what is important to us and most of all what is best for our children. It is jam packed full of easy, LAZY, fun-filled ways to find time, make fun, and enjoy FAMILY life. I highly recommend it to any working parent.

Once I got it home and gave it a test run, I knew that each set of grandparents would need a copy also. The activities are fun for the kids, and not too daunting for grandparents to handle. Thanks, Marilee, there is a special place in heaven for people who make parenthood more manageable and enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Treat yourself and your children to this book!.......1999-08-01

I want to meet this author... She seems to know the problems I experience each day trying to spend quality time with my children as well as getting the day's work done. Organization isn't exactly my strength so her tips are appreciated. Best of all, my children so far LOVE the meals and activities she has recommended. "Green spaghetti" has become a new family favorite! I found the book enjoyable to read and her suggestions easy to implement. I heartily recommend it to everyone, parents, grandparents, baby-sitters, and day-care workers, who want to make their time with children more enjoyable and profitable for all!

                5 out of 5 stars What a great time-saver!.......1999-08-01

Let's face it, parents who pick up this book don't have a lot of time on their hands. That's why this book is such a valuable resource. It's formatted beautifully, with thoughtful and inciteful ideas listed in the sidebars of the pages, making it easy to reference ways to spend quality time with your children, without wasting precious moments leafing through page after page. It's time that is much better spent having fun with your kids! I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, insightful look in to time with children........1999-08-01

This is a special book that is more than a guide. It maintains a wonderful perspective that recognizes the importance that tranquility (and often order)in the parent is essential to helping the child find fun. But the fun, it seems, that both lingers and helps the child to grow.

What a neat approach, one that I wish I had had when dealing with the "little ones" on both rainy and sunny days.

I've had to read many learning organizational books for my graduate studies -- this was one of my favorites out of maybe 10 I've read. One, it's fun to read! The examples are erudite, taken from other disciplines like science and math, not just business. The 10 steps are easy to follow, logical and well represented. The authors rely on concrete examples that everyone can relate to. If I had to train a group of people or point an organization towards achieving its goals as a learning organization, I would rely on this book as my bible. Great writing style, great examples -- overall one of the most enjoyable I've read!

While there are many books about brain-compatible learning, systems thinking, communication, organizational and culture change, multiple intelligences..., this book has integrated them all into a very practical, wise and interesting manual for organizational growth. Ideally, people in any organization should start with the assessment tool and go sequentially through all the ten steps: 2. promote positive, 3. safe thinking, 4. risk taking, 5. people as resources, 6. learning power, 7. map the vision, 8. model the vision, 9. systems thinking, 10. get show on the road. But there are so many useful guidelines, stories and exercises, you can dip into any page and be enriched and enlightened. Just take "16 principles that promote learning" (pp. 16-19) or the 36 assessment items (pp. 66-67), they are very specific goals for us to aim at. "Why most training doesn't work" (pp. 168-171) should be required reading for all trainers. In fact, the whole book should be required reading by all those in management or interested in fostering growth through participative learning. For follow-up, it helps to read Peter Kline's The Everyday Genius, that gives a more comprehensive background to the Integrative Learning that underlies the present book. People can also go on to Peter Senge and team's books--if they haven't done so. In another revised edition, it might help to include an index and also update the checklist on 7 multiple intelligences to include the natural and existential intelligences.
