An invaluable resource for understanding Synectics!.......2006-03-02

This excellent book illustrates beautifully the analogy building aspect of the powerful Synectic problem solving process, from the standpoint of design. It is also a great companion to Art Synectics by the same author. Both of them never cease to amaze me, as I often turn to their many pages for creative inspiration. Both of them are also packed with easy to follow and fun exercises.

They are among my first few books on understanding the Synectic process. Synectics was created by William J J Gordon & George Prince in the 50's or 60's. The process can be applied in both the educational as well as business settings. In fact, Gordon had created many exercise books for use in the schools. Unfortunately many of his good stuff in this respect are now out of print and hard to get.

Great Ideas about Having Great Ideas.......2002-06-10

As an art educator, this is the book I turn to when my ideas have run out. It has some great starting points for stimulating thought--both in yourself and your students. It offers terrific visuals which suggest all sorts of ideas for starting interesting projects. Read the text and you realise it is even better than it looks--this book is all about how to think in new and creative ways. Any way you'd like to use it, this book is refreshing.

An Art Educator Staple.......2000-03-24

Design Synectics is a stand out browse and reference text for Art educators. I would also highly recommend this book to any creative person. It is like a service manual for the artist/ divergent thinker. Presenting individual visual and cognitive concepts in a schematic that is easy to read and fun to practice. While some of the action items in this book may seem a little too structured, individual educators will have little trouble in customizing the approaches to fit with their style. While many books written for Art teachers only give outdated product based ideas, Design Synectics gives insight into the thinking associated with visual literacy. This book is a true Art educator staple.

Invaluable Resource!.......2005-03-14

If you teach art, make art, or just like to try new things, get this book any way you can! Ideas are simple and short-- no reading and reading just to find the procedures- no long-winded justifications. There are several activities on each page which serve for a one or more class periods project or as a jumping-off place for your own ideas. I think you'll turn to this book again and again, as there is just too much to digest in a year of classes. The only drawback is the lack of visual examples. There are no color photos and, often, the examples are from professonal artists and may not match the project exactly. As a source of inspiration, though, this has no equal (unless it's Roukes' other book, Design Synectics, for which I long!). There is even a spinner to generate ideas! Zonker, an airheaded moron was never an appealing character. His silly quest to redo Woodstock is an insult to every reader's collective intelligence. I admit, I don't like Doonesbury one iota. I CAN'T STAND that fresh mouthed brat, Alex Doonesbury and her stupid names for her pop (popster, dadster, popmeister, poppadoodle) are very irritating. Kim, the sneaky Generation X female is for the birds. Duke and his equally unappealing son are the male versions of stinky Alex. Mr. Butts should be stubbed out and flushed down the toilet.

One good thing about not being famous is you don't run the risk of being put down in "Doonesbury." That is a good incentive to shun fame. I really dislike "Doonesbury," and I was a history major!

A trip down memory lane? A history lesson?.......2000-04-05

Doonesbury books should be the textbook for the last week of high school history courses. You can use this book to remember the political atmosphere of the early 90s or just to have some slightly intellectual comics lying around. Of course, if you don't already like Doonesbury, this probably won't change anything.

Professor Youngblood focuses on commercial directors, acting genres, box office hits and audience responses to these films and their stars. She also examines the role of foreign films and the governmental and industrial circumstances underlying filmmaking practices of the era. Challenging and Fun.......2000-07-16

The 2nd New Grab a Pencil Book of Seek-A-Word combines challenging word search with interesting topics. Not only will you improve your word search skills, but you may learn something about the puzzles topics in the process. US Cities that begin with "Z," Counting in Hebrew, and a Creole Crab Meat Casserole Recipe are just a few of the puzzle topics. This book has provided so many hours of fun, that I am now purchasing the first edition from the same author. ENJOY!

Reads like a big dictionary..........2006-10-19

Personally, I don't like this book. It reads like a big dictionary... lots of words but nothing tying things together. I found it difficult to find and follow a set of concrete steps to help get a PMO up and running. I understand it is "complete" but it does it at the expense of the "shotgun effect"--throwing a lot of stuff out but not really zeroing in on anything.

I think this book would be great for someone who needed to pick and choose a few specific things and wanted a reference but as a day-to-day book to help with setting up a PMO and figuring out how to get a PMO effort off the ground in a way that ensures success, it misses the mark unfortunately.

Keep this Handbook "Handy".......2006-05-11

Hill's book is an excellent overview of the Project Management Office(PMO) stages and functions. It is well-organized and well-written, with each chapter following a consistent format and including a related function model for the topic being discussed.

I particularly liked:

o The PMO Competency Continuum that depicts the five stages in the evolution of a full-blown PMO (i.e.,Center of Excellence), and the functions, advantages and disadvantages associated with each stage

o The table depicting the 20 PMO functions, grouped within his five function categories: Practice Management, Infrastructure Management, Resource Integration, Technical Support and Business Alignment

o Good use of charts, diagrams, bullets, examples, etc.

o Recognition of the PMO's business integration function

Suggestion for future editions: Correlate functions and processes to the Project Management Institute (PMI)'s terminology, phasing, etc.

A good desk reference!

This is a very useful book for project managers and executives. A very complete book on the subject of project management offices.
It presents a complete view of the most important functions of a PMO.
