Book Description
Long before multicultural characters and themes were fashionable, Ezra Jack Keats crossed social boundaries by being the first American picture-book maker to give the urban child a central place in children's literature. In Ezra Jack Keats: Artist and Picture-Book Maker author Brian Alderson gives an account of the emergence and significance of Keats' books within the context of his life. Alderson shows how Keats' early ambitions were all towards "fine art" and were spurred on by his success as a schoolboy painter. But his career was always under threat from the depression, from the distractions of war service, and from all the financial difficulties that are the regular lot of practicing artists. Despite a spell of study in Paris, Keats eventually gravitated into commercial art and then "to his own surprise" discovered that he was a children's book illustrator. In describing this career, and in analyzing the great picture books of Keats' maturity, Brian Alderson has drawn upon recollections of those who knew him and upon the large archive of his works held at the de Grummond Collection of the University of Southern Mississippi. This has allowed an insight not only into Keats' character, but also into his working life: everything from his obsessive contract negotiations to his struggles in perfecting both his books and the way in which they were presented to the public. In its mixture of sadness and joy, Keats' life brought him very close to the children for whom he "as "an ex-kid"" had such affinity. This book is the fourth in a Pelican series featuring America's greatest children's illustrators and authors including Jessie Willcox Smith, Johnny Gruelle, and Kate Greenaway.

Book Description
For centuries, painters have used their brushes to turn female nudes into their most famous masterpieces. Now a New York-based, award-winning photographer does the same in this phenomenal homage to women of color titled Beautiful: Nudes by Marc Baptiste. This gorgeous and moving book is a rich compilation of women baring their bodies and their souls.
From fashion model icons Bethann Hardison and Beverly Johnson to soul singer N'dea Davenport to silver screen goddesses Stacy Dash, Rosario Dawson, and Vanessa Williams, and a host of other contemporary women, Beautiful is a labor of love that captures the essence of all women while simultaneously celebrating cultural roots.
Quotes from the subjects take a candid look at how ethnic women view their bodies and give the readers a provocative glimpse into the world of female body image. This work is alternately passionate and intelligent, inspiring and seductive. It is Beautiful.

Venus.......2007-04-15
I think some reviewers here have missed the point.
This book is a tribute to the oldest ideals of femininity (women of color) and a counterpoint to the very narrow one we have now.
The women pictured here were absolutely stunning; not because of their flaws, nor because of their fine features, but because of how all of that together adds up to beautiful photographs of women.
Women here have cellulite, pubic hair, stretch marks, high breasts, and low, because yes, beautiful women have them.
From Hollywood stars, models, and musicians, to dancers, moms, and women with curves; they are all photographed with the same reverence for their beauty. And contrary to what's been said, though it is majority Black, Asian, Latina, and Native American women are pictured here as well.
The nudity is neither fetishist nor is it exploitive. In a culture all too happy to do both to women of color, this is REALLY refreshing.
It's a respectful honoring of the beauty of all women's bodies. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a counterpoint to the typical, modern, feminine, beauty ideal.
Nice to See Women of Color.......2006-11-17
There are some beautiful ladies in beautiful photographs in this collection; there are also some ladies who are seriously overweight, one missing a breast, and some older ladies--and the revelation is that if you pay attention, there's beauty there, too. I'm not being sentimental; someone can be way too heavy and have a beautiful, strong face; the lady who underwent the mastectomy is a dancer, with a correspondingly lithe, supple body.
There's only one woman in all these shots who might not be a person of color (hard to tell sometimes, isn't it?), and not all are black. Some of the shots are full-body photographs, and some are classic portraits of the face. It is very nice to see beautiful women of color featured in a collection like this. As always, showing someone smoking takes away from the appeal of a photo, just as it would if it showed them shooting up. Otherwise, all the settings and poses are just fine.
Great Work - Not Overdone...Just Right.......2006-10-20
Growing up in a house full of women...I really appreciate Mr. Baptise's approach to this book. The photos are great and they illustrate both the inner & outer beauty of our beloved black women.
Photography at it's best..........2006-03-25
This book is amazing, the photographer captures the human body in the most natural way. The subjects that are used are more life like not over done models. He clearly has a love affair with the body and the camera. Incredible!
Visual Art.......2005-08-14
This book is tastefully done. It illuminates beauty in every walks of life, as life has many different challenges for all of us. Bravo, very well done....................

Loved it!!!.......2007-01-11
I bought this for my son and he is a huge Garfield fan. He has already picked out his favorite Masterpiece Months.
It's the Cat's Meow!".......2007-01-11
The Garfield Fat Cat Masterpieces 2007 Wall Calendar is a great hit with cat lovers. Mimicking great Masterpieces of art, it is humorous, colorful and fun. I don't have a cat because I am not a cat lover (sorry, no offense to anyone) but I LOVE the Garfield calendar. It is a great gift and a wonderful spacious calendar. It adds color to my office area and makes me smile when I look at it.

Book Description
The Musical Repertories of the Liturgy of Southern Italy and Beneventan Sources, Alleluia Melodies after 1100, and the change in transmission of instrumental music in Fifteenth-Century Europe are provided. John McCaughey's concert programme of medieval troped chants for Pentecost juxtaposed with traditional monophonic work songs from Vietnam, Thailand and Western Java as well as various contemporary compositions are also included.
Songs of the Dove and the Nightingale provides a comprehensive survey of sacred and secular music within the context of a multilingual and intercultural milieu where influences and exchanges of liturgico-musical materials took place between many different ethnic groups. Structural relations between music and text are explored through the analysis of textual punctuation and the structured repetition of the refrain.
Customer Reviews:
Great book/game... But make sure you get the right version!.......2007-01-13
Reviewer's note: There are actually TWO different versions of the second edition of this book, and book sellers VERY OFTEN confuse the two and list them in the wrong place (so it is best to always ask beforehand to be safe). For this reason, I have included this review under both the 1992 and 1996 versions of this book (so please excuse me if you see it more than once). However, since I didn't know where most buyers would start, I figured it was best to provide this information under all relevant locations to be safe. That said:
This is the classic D6 version of the Star Wars Roleplaying game. If you are reading this, you likely already know of have heard that the West End Games version of Star Wars The Roleplaying Game is excellent (many people don't know this, but this is actually the basis for the newer Star Wars D20 RPG and Minis games, though many people think the original D6 version is even better). And this book is no exception (especially the 1996 version -- see below). This one book contains pretty much everything both the player and the GM need to play (though there are lots of great supplements -- including premade adventures -- you can use if you are interested and can find them). The book begins with a very nice "Player Section" that covers everything the player needs to know about creating and playing a character. The rest of the book is for the GM. For example, the "Gamemaster Section" covers all the basics that the GM needs to know run an adventure (including rules, combat and injuries, movement, space travel, the Force, etc.). There is also an "Adventure Section" (contains tons of ideas about designing adventures) and a "Universe Section" (provides tons of detail about GM characters, aliens/monsters, weapons/equipment/vehicles, droids, planets, etc). Finally, there are several appendices (with reference charts and character templates). In sum, if you are interested in giving this game a try, you can do so as both a player and a GM with this one book!
In addition to providing the above information about the book, I also wanted to make an important point of clarification re: the two different versions of the second edition of this book.
The first version of this book is simply subtitled "Second Edition" -- this one was released in 1992 (WEG40055 -- ISBN = 0-87431-181-0), and has a mostly blue cover with a picture of Darth Vader in a square on the front. This is still a fun book to read (and usually costs a lot less than the 1996 version). But, it DOES NOT contain the latest/final version of the rules. Further, thought the production quality is excellent, it is not quite as good as the 1996 version.
The second version is subtitled "Second Edition: Revised and Expanded" -- this one was released in 1996 (WEG40120 -- ISBN = 0-87431-268-X). It is also a hardcover, and has a picture of the Millennium Falcon racing through space while being fired upon by several TIE fighters. This book DOES contain the latest/final rules for this game. Further, the production quality is excellent, and it is printed in full color on high quality semi-gloss paper.
YOU DO NOT NEED BOTH VERSIONS OF THIS BOOK. If you just want to get a feel for the game and save a little money, buy the 1992 edition. In fact, if this is the case it may be worth buying the original first edition (which was released in 1987, and is also excellent and reasonably priced). However, if you want the latest/final version of the rules, than the 1996 edition is a must (it costs more, but I think it is worth it).

A must buy for people who love games and love Star Wars.......2001-11-19
This is the book. I mean "The Book" as my friends and I call it... I'm serious. If you love star wars, and you love either games or acting, this is what you need, plus six sided dice, paper, and the pencil you will have to have to play this game. It's not all mindless action the way D&D is! It has a lot of social interaction, teamwork, and problem solving! But it still has action! It's just not omnipresent is all. The action is very cinematic, giving a true starwars feel to it. You play bold heroes who actually have statistics AND personality!!! This game is very well designed. And it's so easy to modify too if your a big fan of house rules. This game has been a favorite of mine for about 7 years. Don't pass this one up.
Excellent! You must get this game!.......2000-08-21
I have no idea what possessed me to dish out 30 bucks for this book, but let me tell you now, it's beyond worth it. This game is perfect for begginner Role Playing Gamers, with an easy to learn D6 (six sided dice) system. The book is clean, colorful, and easy to read. It teaches you how to play, create adventures, and lots more. Probably the best part of the book is the numerous examples of gameplay. Give the author a pat on the back for that, time after time in other RPGs Ive been annoyed by the lack of examples of play. No need to worry here, there is an example for almost every skill or rule in the game, so you don't have to second guess the book's quality. For experienced, and beginner role players, you MUST get this game, and have hours of fun playing it.
Great Gaming Resource.......2000-05-08
I've been with SWRPG ever since 2nd Edition came out, and I have to say that the R&E book is well worth the investment. It clears up a lot of grey areas that were present in the 2nd Edition book and has much greater resources from a beginning gamer's point of view. It also offers many fresh perspectives to those who have some experience with the game. All around, a worthwhile purchase.
May the Force be with you.........2000-05-04
I picked up this book about a year ago and I have yet to be dissapointed. The format is really easy to get into with the narrative intros and highlighted basics so that you can start your adventure as soon as you want. For all Star Wars fans, (inluding the nitpickers, who need to relax) and roleplayers who want more than just guns and trolls. P.S. Hey Bradley, keep up with the times before you mock others. Wizards of the Coast OWNS TSR, which now has the Star Wars license. Read a little more often.

Customer Reviews:
great book for those in finance.......2006-06-20
This book is great if you're in the field of finance. This is not for the average consumer looking for investment advice. I've been in corporate financial planning and analyis for the past five years and always wondered how equity analysts built their models. This books will give you insight into their thinking and also give enough detail to build your own models. I would have rated it five stars if the book included a CD with his examples in Excel. The author does have website where you can download sample models.
for SELL-SIDE analysts only.......2006-01-14
I bought this book based on the strong reviews as a complement to Damodaran's classic on valuation, but felt disappointed.
To qualify my comments: First, I am not a sell-side analyst, and secondly, I haven't finished the book. After about 50 pages, I threw in the towel.
My first stylistic objection to the book is its low content density. There is tremendous repetition and examples are trotted out in excruciating detail, even where the conclusions are fairly obvious. For example, on p. 34: "At competitive equilibrium, the firm can identify no incremental investment opportunities likely to generate returns in excess of capital costs. Competitive equilibrium is often defined as a condition in which investment opportunities generate returns equal to capital costs, but existing investments continue to earn abnormal rates." To me these two sentences are already redundant. But in case you still didn't get it, further DOWN on the SAME PAGE: "...This situation is called economic equilibrium, or economic parity. What does equilibrium mean? When returns are forced down to capital costs, then economic rents and/or abnormal earnings disappear and no further incentive to enter the business exists".
But the most frequently repeated point of the first two chapters, is best summed up on p. 19: "As I say many times in the coming pages [and he's not kidding, there], equity analysis is not prophecy; it's opinion. It was never meant to be objective description, but it is strong advocacy." If you're the sell-side analyst, having to "dress up a pig" to help your firm gain some banking business, this book might offer some ideas. But where does this leave the consumer of such analysis? "It's the investor's job to 'diversify' by considering a variety of analysts' positions." (p.9)
I think better advice for the investor might be to learn how to perform sound analysis themselves. For that, I recommend Damodaran's book. I lost my faith in this book's intent to provide balanced (let alone predictive) analysis.
One of the Best.......2005-11-01
There are reams and reams of investment valuation books on the market -- that is obvious.
In my opinion, the three no one should be without are Applied Equity Analysis, Stephen Penman's monster tome "financial statements and...", and lastly, Aswath Damadoran's book, "investment valuation."
Most hyperventilating MBAs default to Damadoran; I really enjoy the simplicity behind Applied Equity Analysis.
Caution: Neither of the 3 are what you'd call "light reading."
If you have any money left, honorable mention goes to Cooke's "security analysis on wall street."
Probably the best.......2004-07-15
I've been looking for a practical step by step book on equity analysis from a practitioners viewpoint. This is it. Other books try to take shortcuts. This book does not take short-cuts, but neither is it bogged down with unncessary academic exercises. If you really want to understand how to do valuation and applied equity analysis I can't recommend any book more highly. It is head and shoulders above anything else out there. Penman's book (from Columbia Business School) is also good but it is a VERY serious and weighty book that probably should only be attacked after you have read this one. Get this book by English and you will not be sorry. I have spent way too much time reading hundreds of other books that weren't nearly as educational. Again, however, it is only for the serious investor.
Very readable, very insightful, and extremely practical.......2001-09-23
James English's "Applied Equity Analysis" is a how-to manual on evaluating stocks based on his 20 years of experience at JP Morgan. The book is very well-written and readable since the author employs plain english (no pun intended) to make his three major points: 1) accounting numbers--while by no means perfect--are excellent tools in evaluating stocks, 2) accounting-based stock valuation is superior to (but does not neccessarily supplant) cash flows, and 3) competition ensures that eye-popping financial performance doesn't last forever.
Contrary to another reviewer, English employs excellent examples to clarify and explain his points. Some examples: Gateway 2000's earnings history was used to explain how to find and interpret non-recurring items (NRI) on financial statements. Ratio analysis was demonstrated by looking at the PC industry in 1998. Emerson Electric was the company chosen to show why mature companies were still good buys. Many other examples abound, and English does a successful job in tying their relevance to his arguements.
But successful use of examples is not just the only strength of the book. The author also tackles a range of topics complete with insightful and clear discussions: the flaws of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Economic Value Added (EVA), financial statement analysis, fundamental analysis, etc.
A quick glance at the table of contents below gives you an idea of the scope of English's book. I highly recommend this book to not just Wall Street analysts, anyone who is interested in finding fundamental value in evaluating stocks instead of following the crowd.
