Book Description
Extensively illustrated using a wide range of styles and techniques, this is a unique course of instruction in drawing the human figure from memory and the imagination. Beginning with informal sketchbook studies and a brief summary of anatomical structure before going on to explain figure movement and how the body shows its age and exudes character, it will encourage all artists, illustrators and cartoonists to explore this popular subject with confidence and style.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on the subject.......2006-11-29
The first and best advice comes from Robert Crumb, underground artist extrodinaire: "Wanna draw better? Draw. Wishing won't make it happen!"
Now, if you still want to spend money on the subject there are art classes or in this case inspirational/advisement/genre books.
This book helped me go a level up by pointing out I could pause a VCR (or in this day, Cable TV and DVD) for endless "Life Drawing" classes. Filled a few sketchbooks that way. Even though I do cartoony art, doing that helped tremendously. Ron Tiner's a good artist, buy his book.
Observer's guide.......2006-11-26
This isn't a book about copying someone else's art. The author instead takes the approach of guiding you to make your own observations from life drawing. Many new artists want to skip drawing from life and instead want to copy other artists works. Ron Tiner takes the time to remind us that if you want to draw the figure, you need to observe the actual figure in person. If you're looking for a step by step, draw a circle, draw a square and now its a figure ... well first of all, your figure drawing will suffer from using those kinds of texts alone, but that is not this book.
You will find primers in here on proportion, body types, foreshortening. These are things that you should not only look for in the artist's illustrations, but in your actual studies from life. I think he makes very clear that drawing from your imagination takes a lot of knowledge, practice and memorization which new artists tend to willfully ignore looking for the easy route. You can imagine and have probably seen the "artists" surrounded by books, copying other artists, probably improving but only slowly.
As Tiner points out, when you observe and draw at the moment of a real life scene you're surprised at how FAST you'll improve. You have to because the subject might only be there briefly walking down the street.
Not only that, but he takes the time to express how to turn these observations into the scenes that you've imagined. That's something I haven't really seen in a book before. Understanding that thought processed opened my world of drawing. Now I'm professional artist and illustrator (BA in Fine Art).
Definitely give this book a chance and do what he suggests. Don't just do the things you want to hear. You'll be successful.
Solid instruction.......2006-11-03
Not a beginners book but for someone who has mastered the rudiments of draughtsmanship, this is a goood guide to taking the next step...drawing from memory. The quality of Tiner's drawings should inspire anyone wanting to go beyond mere copying of the figure.
Figure Drawing.......2006-11-03
Fun and informative, what else can you ask for in an instruction book?
a book that teaches you nothing.......2003-03-05
Have you ever asked for help on learning how to draw and as an answer someone told you "draw a lot"? Well, that is what this book basically says. Even though it is a good and obvious truth that one should draw a lot in order to be good at it, it isn't going to help you learn that much. One needs tips, on anatomy, foreshortening, lighting, clothing on wrinkles, facial features etc in order to learn to draw. This book contains little if not none. The illustrations in this book are almost nonexistant. He did show a couple pictures that proves that he himself can draw, but nothing really that you can copy to memorize so you can draw yourself. As you can probably tell, I did not like this book at all. However, i might be able to give you some tips on books that might help you out. First and most important, dynamic anatomy by Burne Hogarth, head and figure by jack hamm, foreshortening by Burne hogarth, wrinkles and drapery, burne hogarth, and there are many more out there i am sure. This book never cut it, didn't give illustrations or tips, if you are uncertain though i recommend going to a library and figuring out if this book is right for you before spending money on it.
Customer Reviews:
extremely helpful.......2007-04-21
I wish I had found this book 20 books ago. The simplified figure is extremely helpful to say the least and together with the Bargue, and the Hogarth dynamic figure, I believe you have everything you need to draw the human figure from your imagination. It's a shame it's out of print, but I believe it was worth every penny I spent for it. Forget the overpriced goldfugue and such...this is the one you need.
One Possible Starting Point.......2005-09-26
Uses a system of a properly constructed stick figure to rough in your ideas, from which a finished figure can be built up. I find this speeds the process of sorting ideas, working up thumbnails, and roughing in crowd scenes, though I still rely on Hogarth for anything beyond that point. If Hogarth's dynamism (his trees writhe with energy) doesn't sit well with you, this big book is a passable alternative, though it does not cover as much as _Dynamic Figure Drawing_ does: things like foreshortening, the extremely tucked figure, or female [...] are not covered. A little too much time is spent on detailing small bones and deep muscles that make no difference in the drawing of what is visible.
extremely practical and helpful.......1998-07-15
This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone wanting to study artistic anatomy. After slogging through other anatomy books,I found this one explaining everything I needed to know with simplicity and thoroughness. Not that other books are without merit, but this is the place to start. A treasure if you can find it!

Customer Reviews:
A brilliant book about a beautiful process.......2007-09-09
This is the bible of Platinum and Palladium printing. The second edition has two or three significant additions over the first edition. It has a quick start chapter to get that first print out. Yes, the book is very technical in some of its treatment of the material - and that is the reason you will go back to it again and again. But the process is fairly straightforward in its essence and working through the steps to get that first print clarifies much of the material to come later on. Second, I think the material covering Palladium printing with the Na2 contrast control method is essential knowledge today. It's surprising the more I've read of the history of Platino/Palladio processes how much information was lost that had to be "discovered" again. Third, there is a strong treatment on the effect of paper choice and characteristics of some papers (at least one of which is no longer being made since the second edition came out) that can help you understand how to find appropriate papers for other alternative processes. Finally, the appendices from different authors provide viewpoints of the process that round out treatment of the subject. Mark Nelson's chapter on digital negatives touches the surface of what has become my primary method for contact printing not only the Platinum and Palladium prints, but traditional silver as well as other alternative processes.
Highly recommended for any student of photography interested in mastering one of the most beautiful processes for printmaking.
straight to the point.......2007-07-30
It goes directly to the important topic, speaking to the photographer with previous knowledge. A book for the professional.
Seems overwhelming, just start with the basic process and get thrilling results!.......2005-12-21
Platinum/Palladium printing has "Wizard of Oz-like" mystique and a sense of mysterious alchemy beyond most photographic processes, but don't fret, it's not that difficult to get started. After my personal hands-on introduction (thank you, William Laven), Dick Arentz provides both the simple path to getting started, and then details comprehensive areas of specialty which he makes pretty helpful sense of. If you are already familiar with Platinum/Palladium, there is enough which has been pioneered in the recent several decades to allow a refresher for old photography hounds. For those starting out, just get the basic kit, read through the core sections of the book several times, then follow the three (3) pages of Chapter 6 - "The First Print". Once you have produced a few Palladium prints, cruise Chapter 7 - "Calibration" which provides a nice mental snack. Then move on to Chapter 8 - "The Platinum and Palladium Print", where having gotten past the panic of getting started, you can actually work out your basic functional understanding of the process. Like when that adult helped you launch on your first bike ride, suddenly you will be moving on your own and starting to get in the groove of the process.
For the silver old-timers, the sensitometry chapter and discussion of Pyro developers will really come into play as you confront the issues of "do I have to choose between making negatives for Platinum or silver ..." Pyro can play equally well in both environments, and was very liberating when I realized that I had a rich path of negative making without conflicts ahead of me. Pyro is an opportunity to evolve once again during this lifetime.
I use 8x10 for my serious work, and with standard films and papers going the way of the buffalo, I now understand what I need to do to use this remarkable process without being on a completely dead-end path.
There are several major advantages to gaining an ability to print Platinum/Palladium:
1. They can't discontinue the product! When you put a small number of drops of specific chemistry in a little cup, evenly coat the paper, expose it to UV light, slip the print into developer for two minutes, clear in three baths for 5 minutes each and then wash - it's like discoving fire as a tool. Pretty basic stuff, but very thrilling!
2. No fixer fumes.
3. You can work with the lights on.
4. You don't need a completely tweaked out darkroom in order to work - a simple space can be transformed into a miracle production facility.
5. It's fun.
6. The prints are beautiful. It will take time to figure it out, gain a vocabulary with the materials and get solid with your workflow, but Dick's book will hold your hand as you take the path towards a new, fruitful printing adventure.
Enthusiasm may inspire you to purchase other books, but this one can get you started successfully, and at the same time, it will provide plenty of sustenance as you grow. Or if you are already knowledgeable, there's plenty to chew on. If you are too advanced and find anything to be critical about in this book, write your own and share it with us!
If it still seems overwhelming to get started, find some fellow photo adventurer so that you can try it out together. Pulling prints on hand coated paper which are archivally stable, have long scale and beautiful physical presence, well, it could make an old dog thrilled about photography again, or simply inspire a newbee with a very remarkable way to make stunning prints. There are challenges, and there are plenty of mysteries, but if you have large format negatives hanging around, or you are boo-hoo-hooing that conventional photography is dying, being replaced by digital, this book will help dry those tears. Get going and happy printing!
A fantastic source of knowledge.......2003-04-25
I think the previous review of this book pretty much summed things up rather well. I bought this book with minimal to no knowledge of the platinum and palladium printing processes. After having read the book several times now (not because it's hard to understand, but because it's so well done), I feel I've gained a very good handle on the basics of the process, and the information provided is given in such a way as to give you both the kind of knowledge needed to start making your first prints as well as the kind of knowledge needed to refine and grow into the process. I tend to be a very analytical thinkier, and the way the book is organized appeals to my thought patterns. If you're more of a romantic (as opposed to classical) thinker, though, the large amounts of numbers-based technical info may seem a little discouraging. Even if you are, though, I must highly recommend this book, as I think it must be the single most comprehensive and well-produced book on the subject.
An Excellent Intro into Platinum Printing.......2000-05-20
This book covers platinum and palladium printing in a very logical, thorough manner. If you have never done Pt/Pd, you will get all the introduction necessary to buy a kit and get started. If you have done some, you can move on fairly quickly to the more advanced topics in the book, and get more out of your printing sessions.
The printing method in this book is not for everyone. The methodology in the book is fairly numerically based, and if you like to work by instinct and intuition, this may not be the right approach for you. However, the discussions of available papers, chemical use and hazzards, and other resources listed in the book are worth the price of admission alone, not to mention the exquisite photographs reproduced in duotone.
The photographs are quite inspirational; Arentz is clearly a master image-maker from the printing perspective, as well as having an eye for composition and subject.
There are other books on platinum printing out there (most notably by Weese and Sullivan) but this book is the one resource I keep going back to again and again.

many stereotypical films.......2007-03-30
The majority of films described here were done by Americans or Europeans. Who chose Africa as the backdrop for various reasons. We see that in the early decades, many had a strong colonialist bent. Above all, the various Tarzan movies. Where Africans were merely portrayed as simple peoples, at best.
After World War 2, there is a dimunition of such themes. But now we see new ideas arising. Notably decolonisation and how the newly independent nations might fare.
Frankly, movies that differ from such stereotypes are indeed rare, in Cameron's analysis.
Excellent resource!.......2005-03-03
Both thorough and thoroughly readable, Africa on Film is indispensable for anyone interested in American and European movies about "the Dark Continent." Cameron knows his stuff and writes about it gracefully; I profited especially from his comments on Tarzan.

Book Description
As the century comes to a close, composition of music in the United States has reached little consensus in terms of style, techniques, or "schools." In fourteen original articles, the contributors to this volume explore the broad range and diversity of post-World War II musical culture. Classical and jazz idioms are both covered, as is the broad history of electronic music in the United States.

From the mouths of customers: what they want, how they want it, and what they'll do if they don't get it
There's no way around it. Executives, managers, and strategic thinkers around the globe are grappling with how to transform their organizations from product or service orientation to being customer driven. The 10 Demandments presents an informed and interactive road map that takes readers directly to the hearts, minds, desires, and demands of the new customer, whether it is the end consumer or a business-to-business relationship. In this customer-centric manifesto, customer experience guru Kelly Mooney scrutinizes the total customer experience. "Earn My Trust" . . . "Put Me in Charge" . . . "Inspire Me" . . . Each resulting demandment is a call to action from customersa call that is answered by the book's strategic insights, anecdotes, and action plans.
Customer Reviews:
Ten Demandments.......2007-01-10
This was a required book for my client relationships course and I found it well-written and very applicable to anyone dealing with customers on a daily basis.
This book ROCKS!.......2006-03-20
Building a technology-based service business is certainly no walk in the park but Mooney and Bergheim help make that walk a little less treacherous. Follow the ten demandments of the demanding customer and you will be rewarded by those customers.
So, you really think your company is customer friendly?.......2005-11-27
Don't be so sure your company - or ever yourself - is all that consumer friendly because after taking Kelly Mooney's self-assessments at the end of each chapter, you might be depressed. While its a cliche, it is true: the rules of engagement have changed. Today's exceptional, differentiated products and services are tomorrow's expectation and demands in the age of the well-informed, technology-empowered consumer. While not a book about the internet, Kelly Mooney's book here illustrates how the internet has armed today's consumer with more information, options and price comparisons - all at the speed of light. This is just one factor that has led to the consumer calling the shots more and more and who now just does not have needs, but true DEMANDS. And the businesses that understand this and empower their customers with the information, privacy and control they now demand will emerge the most successful. Those who do not will fall by the wayside.
Lots of marketing books are from the reference point of a business or brand forward: how to get more sales and increase brand awareness of your product. But, Kelly Mooney shows the view only from the stressed-out, untrusting and impatient consumer's vantage point. And we all are consumers who can relate to good and bad experiences. And guess what? Today's demanding consumers don't like, appreciate or trust all you have to say or offer them if they are not asking to hear it. They are suspicious of your uninvited emails or requests for personal information (a big point of discussion in this book). They want straight talk ... they hate all that fine print ("Lose it" is the recommendation) ... they want it all fast (or forget it) .... they want to consistently experience your brand the same way regardless of channel ... they want to be rewarded for their loyalty ... and they want complete control of their information and want to remain as anonymous as possible (so forget information requests that do not offer them something in return).
Each chapter is dedicated to one of the ten "demandments" - complete with a self-evaluation at the end of each chapter. As Mooney colorfully illustrates in her many examples, today's consumer wants - umm, demands that your business:
- Earn their TRUST
- INSPIRE them by your company or product
- Make things EASY
- Put them IN CHARGE of the process
- GUIDE them as they ask
- BE AVAILABLE 24/7
- REWARD their loyalty
- EXCEED their expectations
- RESPECT them as in any relationship
This is an engaging, easy-to-read book that is not a textbook monologue nor an analytical Harvard Business Review article, but really a 'street-smart' approach to serving your customers according to the "new demands on the street." It is chocked with many simple but insightful examples (termed "the voice of the consumer") that keep the flow lively and drive home the basic (but often difficult-to-master) principles. Sometimes Mooney is a bit repetitive, but some probably need that to get the points. Many companies don't realize they probably give a certain amount of "lip service" to the idea that "the customer comes first" or "without the customer, our purpose for existing ceases to exist" (haven't we all felt this way as consumers ourselves after a frustrating interaction?). But, after reading this humble, but enlightening little book, they probably will see how much room there is to improve and truly serve today's demanding consumer. So, overall, this book is a fresh, pretty different and important view point worth the time to read. Certainly the price should not deter anyone from getting it.
Great Book!.......2003-01-14
This is the first book I've read on the topic of customer experience and loyalty that truly inspired ME! This is a lively and engaging book with a great point of view. It's written from the customer's perspective- a very interesting and refreshing twist on an important topic.
But why aren't companies doing a better job of providing the exceptional experiences the author talks about in her book? It was certainly an eye opener for me! Glad I found it when I did.
A Must Buy!.......2003-01-09
A great book with good, solid information. The author really knows her stuff and the anecdotes throughout the book were truly inspiring. More companies should heed the Ten Demandments!
