America's Great Park.......2005-12-17

Central Park is just a national treasure, and this book does a wonderful job of capturing the park. It's easy to say that it impossible to take a bad picture this breath taking oasis, but as this book shows it does take skill to really capture the essence of the park. I believe even a native New Yorker, who had spent their whole life in the park, could appreciate this book and could get a who new feel for the space. I recommend this book to anyone with a love for things beautiful.

As enjoyable and informative as "Central Park, An American Masterpiece: A Comprehensive History of the Nation's First Urban Park" by Sara Cedar Miller, this book reveals why the great park was known as the "lungs" of New York City. "212 Views of Central Park: Experiencing New York City's Jewel From Every Angle" by D. Sandee and Hartman Brawarsky is gorgeous book, and each of the 212 views are nothing less than breathtaking. It's not only a great coffee table book, but also has very informative text. It is a true glorification of Vaux's and Olmstead's vision and realization of what true civic engineering is capable of, when supported by a responsive government. Of course, there is no substitute for experiencing the park first-hand, but this sure conveys that sense of relief from the city's frenzied pace, and of the park's true beauty. I recommend this book highly.

Miriam Engleberg, Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person: A Memoir in Comics (Harper, 2006)

The late Miriam Engleberg released a book of cartoons (the subtitle is "a memoir in comics," though whether this is really a memoir is probably arguable; it's more a collection of sketches) not too long before her death that offer a frank, sometimes frustrating look at life with cancer. I read it about a week ago, and have been trying to come up with a review of it ever since. Time has not made it any easier for me to find something to say about this book; it just is. This is normally the bit where I'd be throwing around phrases like "profound insight" and "raw, but energetic, drawing," but none of them came to mind while I was reading it, and haven't since. I'm not saying it's a bad book, really--it's certainly miles and years better than Cancer Vixen or, lord help us, Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy--but it's not a book that really seems to open up all that much. Perhaps this is a function of the book's fragmentary style; in an actual memoir, much as I despise the things most of the time, you have enough room to get to know the main character as more than just a sketch. (Persepolis is a fantastic example of this, of course.) That never happens here; it's as if Engleberg tried to make the cancer experience universal by shying away from the personal. Not the personal details, mind you, but perceptions, thoughts, etc. that aren't common to those not suffering cancer. Nothing Engleberg reveals of her thoughts and feelings here isn't suffered on a fairly regular basis by anyone with mild neurosis--which is, when it comes right down to it, most of us. If that was the goal, it's a noble attempt, but it comes off shallow in its universality.

I continue my search for a cancer memoir that's half as good as Robert Weinberg's One Renegade Cell, and fruitlessly, but of the cancer memoirs I've read, this is by far the best of them. ** ½

This is one of the best books I've read about having cancer. A comic memoir (in both senses of the word), it's true and funny. I recognized many thoughts from my own treatment experiences in it. It's also extremely funny! (though sad). As another reviewer mentioned, you don't need to have cancer to enjoy this book. I would recommend it to anyone.

On being shallow...........2007-01-11

I should have been issued this book when I got my cancer diagnosis! It is amazing how Miriam hits every cancer milestone head on. I laughed outloud reading about the pamphlets you're given. But, I laughed outloud at most of the topics she covers. I was sad and cried at some topics, but I never could put it down. I find I go back to it from time-to-time, and I've quoted Miriam quite often. I was very sorry to hear that she had passed away at such a young age. I wish she could have written such a book on how not-so-easy it is to recover from cancer.

This is a 'must read' for anyone with, or closely involved with, someone who has breast cancer. You will laugh and laugh and recognize events and interactions familiar to anyone who goes through the diagnosis and treatment. The book makes a great gift!

I love to build models and one of my very favorite subjects is the Panzer Type IV. This books takes serveral models in 1/35 scale and shows you how to superdetail and airbrush each one of them. The pointers are general and not the "exact step by step type" but anyone with basic skills will find much to learn from, and will probably be suitably inspired. There is a great walkaround section with color closeup photos of museum pieces that are fanatasctic for the detailer. I got this book primarily for that reason. Some of the painting techniques were new to me and I will attempt them on my next kit. A great book for the beginner/novice modeller who is aware of aftermarket goodies like photo etch frets, and who has recently aquired an airbrush and is ready to experiment with it.

I'm currently doing an MBA thesis on various types of strategy and this book helped a great deal. It's well written, easy to read, and covers all aspects of strategic thinking and the various strategy schools. If you want a general overview of all common strategic thinking, this is the book for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As a business coach, I read over 50 new business books a year and over the decades only a few have ventured onto my "read annually" list. Strategic Safari has there for more years than I can remember. Each revisit is about gleaning new stuff and a "conversation" to take the gauge of my thinking; this book always delights me on both counts. AND! the writing is more than digestible, it's delectable . . . an unusual feature of this genre that I can't applaud enough.

I'm astonished why this book's sales rank is very low. It should be read by more people in United States.

I'm Indonesian and knew this book of an advanced accounting class in my last year in graduate program. Although Indonesia has not much very large corporation like those in United States, this book is still relevant because of multi-facet thinking the authors offer. Entrepreneurial school, for example, is best for guiding or at least describing how small business strategy formed; and small businesses are the very foundation of Indonesia economy.

Entrepreneurial school is only one of ten frameworks Mintzberg et al. offer to comprehend business strategy. This multi paradigm is very relieving since there's so many business solutions prescribed without clear assumptions (or premises)they lay on.
