Book Description
In the winter of 1586, Hakob Jughayets'l, one of Armenia's most celebrated illuminators, completed work on a Gospel Book with an extensive and extraordinary programme of narrative miniatures and marginal figures. Produced in an era of warfare between the Safavid and Ottoman empires over the possession of Armenia, and while Hakob himself was a wandering artist, this manuscript provides a compelling witness to the development of Hakob's artistic personality during a period of personal and political unrest. Tracing his work from the 1580s to the 1610s, this groundbreaking study sets Hakob's extraordinary oeuvre within the political and artistic context of late 16th-century Armenia.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best calligraphic books........1998-02-06
Marie Angel wrote a masterpiece with this book. It is one of the few technical books I have ever read from beginning to end in one sitting. This book is a must for every serious calligrapher.
beautiful and useful.......1996-06-11
This book contains examples of some wonderful small-scale
paintings, along with advice on materials and techniques.
The painting subjects are mostly drawn from nature, with
very few historical examples. I'd recommend this book for
people who are interested in making their own calligraphy
or small book projects and would like to incorporate
natural subjects into their work. It is not a historical
treatment of calligraphy or illumination, but would be
a good addition for the library of those interested in
contemporary work.

Book Description
First published in 1887-9, this remarkable reference work examines the craft of miniaturists and the related trades and techniques of calligraphy and illumination. An art that flourished particularly before the advent of printing, these craftsmen and women enriched manuscripts with pictures, ornate borders, ornamental writing, portraits and the decoration of letters. Also included are copyists - those who painstakingly transcribed volumes by hand before the mechanical printing press.
Compiled by John William Bradley (1830-1916), this 3-volume work was the first serious and systematic attempt to catalogue the practitioners of this craft. Giving precise and often contemporary statements respecting illuminated books and the men and women who executed them, the Dictionary 'will help a reader to form some notion of an artist's manner and style of work, as well as of his time and place in art history'. Occasioning a great amount of original research, the book is still full of useful information that would otherwise only be covered in a wide variety of sources. This set will interest scholars of art history, medieval studies and the history of printing. It will also fascinate those studying religious iconography, as many of the artist practitioners can be found here. Arranged alphabetically, with biographical notes, some bibliographical details of their works, their patrons, their locations and the sources consulted, the Dictionary of Miniaturists... continues to be a valuable and unique reference source.
--an original and unique work still valuable to modern scholars
--the original edition of this work is uncommon and expensive
--no other book examines this subject in such depth

Book Description
Taking photographs has become easier over the years, but taking photographs that have impact and lasting power has not. Such images require heart, and some understanding of the factors that make an image noteworthy. Perception and Imaging, Second Edition will lead you into areas and concepts that will spark your intellectual curiosity and assist you in your image making. What is known about vision and the visual process is overwhelming; what is directly applicable to pictures is not. Perception and Imaging, Second Edition is the visual artist's gateway to the principles that drive visual perception.
Perception and Imaging, Second Edition invites you to explore the domain of the subconscious and collective unconscious, and the role subliminals, secondary images, and archetypes play; the role of memory and association, and why ambiguity and illusion are an important components;
why soft and hard contours (edges) are critical to sharpness, contrast, color, and depth perception; and how visual rhetoric has been used to give impact to photographs, advertisements, posters, promotional material, and motion pictures. Perception and Imaging, Second Edition is for anyone and everyone involved with visual images and has a desire to better understand them.
Many examples of metaphor, metonymy, paradox, pun, homology, hyperbole, ellipses, inversion chiasmus, allusion, and other rhetorical devices.
A new enlarged section on color, with 15 new color images presenting color measurement and notation, color connotations, color illusions, color constancy, color synesthesia, metamerism, and defective color vision.
The chapter on Critique has been expanded to include the use of Group Dynamics. Photographs are polysemantic, possessing layered meanings.
Customer Reviews:
Great starter book.......2007-03-09
I bought this book for a beginning media design class. Good book for beginners. Lots of interesting and helpful information.
This is not a Photography book.......2006-02-14
Read the reviews. This is not a photography book. It is a book on psychology. As a photographer I give this 1 star. This may very well be a good psycology book.
An Academic Treatise.......2004-06-12
I'll keep this review short and sweet. This book is an in-depth academic discussion of how humans see and perceive things. Although there were some interesting tid-bits throughout the book, I wanted to learn how to improve the composition of my photographs, and didn't find anything of use. This book is probably well-suited to a graduate-level psychology course, but for me it has little applicability to photography.
i love this book.......2003-06-16
I own the first edition of this book and I'm still reading and rereading it. This book is a source of ideas, methods, knowledge. What is more important, it is about the fundamentals. A serious, profound book for a thoughtful reader. It will not give you 1-2-3 easy to apply techniques to do this or that. It will do you better - reveal the basics so you can develop your own style and vision (it could take time and efforts, though :)
Beyond Photography and Beyond Me!.......2003-05-27
Most photography instruction books talk about equipment and subjects. Seldom is there a discussion of the psychological and physiological aspects of the photographer and the viewer in the process of creating and looking at pictures. This book attempts to fill that gap for photographers and other graphic artists with the aim of giving more impact to pictures created by those artists.
The contents are wide ranging, with everything from a discussion of Gestalt psychology field grouping to a discussion of the meaning of the "Kilroy was here" signs that proliferated during and after the Second World War.
Some of the material may be immediately useful to a photographer such as the discussion of figure and ground. Thinking in these terms may make it easier for the photographer to decide how, or even if, he wants to provide separation to his subject.
Other material will require a major mental engagement that could ultimately prove useful. For example there is a lengthy discussion of the use of rhetoric in photography. This will be a new concept for most photographers. Zakia suggests that rhetoric deals with structuring the photograph to alter its message in a certain direction. For example, the photographer can use the rhetorical device of identity to strengthen a picture through repetition. That device should be easily understandable to most photographers. On the other hand using dubitation for opposition (sic!) may leave the photographer wondering what the author is talking about. However, a close reading might reveal that considering this approach may lead to a stronger picture.
Finally there is material like the discussion of synesthesia, a situation where one experiences a sensual stimulus, like a sound, in another mode, like vision. While interesting, I failed to see the relevance of this information to the practical photographer.
And that is a major shortcoming of this book. The author frequently fails to make a connection between a phenomenon that he is describing and photography. To compound this shortcoming, when he offers a connection to a visual work as an illustration, he does not usually include the work in the book, but rather describes it in writing. For a book on imaging, the failure to include images is shocking.
I suppose there are photographers who are so skilled and so intellectual that they could benefit from this material. The rest of us can probably find other guides to better our photography.
Book Description
Reprinting Spirit sections from July 1, 1945 to December 30,1945! In late 1945 Will Eisner received his honorable discharge from theU.S. Army, and in December of that year he returned to his masterwork --The Spirit!
Customer Reviews:
The Spirit Archives Series.......2004-04-04
Will Eisner is the only comic book artist to ever have his work shown in a museum of art. His most important work is the Spirit. The Spirit Archives series has brought together all of his work, that was printed in a weekly newspaper insert. However, after the work found in volumes 1 and 2, Eisner was called to active duty and served in the army during World War II. The Spirit carried on, but it was drawn by other artists. Eisner's work does not pick up again until the stories found in Volume 12 of the Archives series. The work in Volumes 3-11 is fine, but it is not the work of Will Eisner.
For Die-Hard Fans.......2003-11-09
First off, Will Eisner had nothing to do with most of the stories in this volume. Most of the stories in this volume are fairly dull and predictable, the wonderful wit and humor of The Spirit being replaced by pretty lame one-liners. Not exactly bad, but not memorable.
This volume is notable for the return of Will Eisner in its final two stories. Fresh out of the service following World War II, he offers up a couple of humorous stories that point the book back to its roots with style and wit.

A professional introduction to the end-to-end process of digital filmmaking!
The EDCF Guide to Digital Cinema Production sheds light on the ongoing and confusing transition from analog to digital technology in film production. In addition to a complete analysis of technical concerns, this text deals with a number of issues where European and Hollywood priorities differ. It adds fuel to the discussion on "Photo-Chemical Fundamentalism" and the future of traditional film-based cinematography.
With special emphasis on new HD production techniques for the big cinema screen, this guide is the one and only resource available from a European perspective. The EDCF Guide to Digital Cinema Production provides film professionals and decisions-makers in European cinema with an excellent basis for discussions on how to handle the transition from analog to digital technology.
Look no further for:
* Several production case studies, among them Ingmar Bergman's last film "Saraband" (2003) and Lars von Trier's "Dogville" (2003).
* Surveys of HD Systems & Cameras and "The 37 MFAQ on HD Production."
* Expert reports on Audio Recording for HD and the Digital Intermediate Process.
* Detailed European initiatives in Digital Cinema.
* An up-to-date survey of the problematic standards situation for Digital Cinema.
* A comprehensive look at archiving the "Achilles Heel" of digital production.

Editor-in-Chief Lasse Svanberg is a founding member of EDCF. He was DoP on 14 feature films 1966-81, founded TM (Technolgy & Man) Magazine at the Swedish Film Institute in 1968 and was its Chief Editor until 1998 He was elected Fellow of BKSTS 1979, Fellow of SMPTE 1995 and granted Professors title by the Swedish Government 2002. He is the author of six books on the history and possible future of film, video and television.
The European Digital Digital Cinema Forum (EDCF) was constituted in June 2001 as joint Swedish-British-French effort to establish a European forum for discussions, information exchange and industrial activities in the field of Digital Cinema. This project was initiated because digital production, digital distribution and digital exhibition of film is the most radical technical change facing the film industry since sound film was introduced.
* Perfect for the serious film professional working in Europe today
* An end-to-end guide on digital film production emphasis on high definition
* Packed with international case studies including the new Ingmar Berman film Saraband
Customer Reviews:
Book's title is misleading........2006-08-21
The book's title is very misleading. The title implies that it covers the entire workflow process, but it does not. The book provides some very interesting case studies, from the perspective of a working cinematographer, and if you're just interested in shooting digital, the content will be quite informative. If you are looking for some more specific information on the post production process, such as editing digital content, and distribution, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Born in 1935, Mâche has made a name for himself as a composer and musicologist. A student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, a qualified teacher and a doctor of letters, he studied under Messiaen and has veen a member of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales since its foundation in 1958.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but needs an update........2007-05-29
This book was actually written after the 3025 technical readout. It was published for all the fans who wanted to see some of the "Lostech" from the Star League mentioned so often in the TR3025. It's one of the few technical readouts that hasn't been updated and it shows. Some of the technology it mentions in passing is more likely to be found in Star Trek, while many of the events mentioned contradict the updated, official story line. Its worth owning and reading, but FanPro really needs to reprint it after bringing it up to speed!
One of the better Tech Readouts.......2004-01-14
This Technical readout covers 'Mechs, vehicles, starships and equipment from an era much vaunted in the story of the game, yet ill-covered by the creators of the game. 2750 was roughly the pinnacle of humanity, a time when man was master of all they could see and at peace. Or at least that's what people of today believed. People like Stefan Amaris and the rock he turned over when he assassinated the First Lord told otherwise. Yet technology-wise, it was a time of great heights. With the development of 'Mechs with technology unrivaled by what could be produced 250 years later by the Inner Sphere and the creation of massive warships capable of unleashing unheard of firepower, this Technical Readout hints at the power the Clans had at their inception and built upon, and the technology that nations fought over for two and a half centuries.
A GREAT Book.......2000-01-19
This book was a very good book for reference to the 2750 time era. It gave a good background of what was going on for the intro of the book, and the Mech designs were good. I especially enjoyed the Mechs such as the King Crab and the Highlander. With examples like those, it is easy to comprehend how much technology was lost when Alexander Kerensky left the Inner Sphere.
This book was disappointing compared to the 3025 readout.......1999-01-01
The 2750 readout gave us a number of new vehicles, aerospace fighters, warships and personal equipment to use, but what we really wanted was MECHS!!! This readout gave us a tiny 20 new designs. I was disappointed with the brief descriptions given, the non-existance of varients and the poor choices of design. They should have included some info on Star League spec. 3025 mechs too. The art work was okay and the layout was familiar.
Worth buying if you can find it.......1998-12-22
A good book which showed off the advanced 'mechs available to the SLDF and the lostech they mounted. A bit overshadowed now days by the fact that most of the new and rare weapons are standard and that most of the 2750 'mechs which didn't appear in TR 3050 are in the revised 3025, but getting this book and the original TR 3025 is a better deal for the amount of 'mechs. Also features Star League vehicles, Dropships and Warships, though most are vastly different when they appear in TR 3057

Customer Reviews:
I live in Las Vegas & This book works! .......2006-05-13
I have read some of the prior reviews. I don't know where some of the reviewers live but in Vegas, these numbers are in line and they work for me daily! While the concepts may not be new to some, they have helped me make alot of $$$ without using my money or credit. There could have been some instances highlighted to let the investor know what to do if your renter does not pay and leaves you with the payment or damages but that is why you don't spend your up front deposits from the renter. You may need it. Screening your renters is the best way to narrow your renter pool to the right candidate. I also work in the mortgage world so I usually have access to their credit prior to them renting. nothing is a surefire thing, but if you want to make big money for basically being the middle man in a well paying puzzle then I would recommend this book. after you read it, all you need is the correct forms and a solid team. By the way, I downloaded this book for free from the authors site which makes it even better. FREE EDUCATION!!! Good luck and remember, you won't get anything worth while if you don't work hard. This falls into that category. Only You can stop you. Money isn't everything but it makes life easier to deal with when you have more of it.
Good Book.......2005-09-01
I like the book. It has the one thing newbes need the most, scripts, scripts, and more scripts. It written simply and has a good feel to it. Plus the price is right
GREAT BOOK!.......2005-05-03
This is a great book with great information! The author gives you enough information to make the program work without having to make any additional purchases. The book was very easy and quick to read. I would definitely recommend this book to experienced investors as well as to those who are new to the world of real estate investing.
Easy, non-nonsense investing.......2005-04-30
This book offers details on finding motivated sellers, finding tenant buyers, plus case studies with hundreds of tips on how to be an investor. As a volunteer for many different non-profit organizations it is important for me to give back. I love the fact that Peter and David promote helping others as you become wealthy in your investing.
This book got me started!.......2005-04-14
I decided during my senior year in college that I wanted to start investing in real estate. After about a year of investigating and reading about real estate I still hadn't been able to purchase any properties.
Finally I read this book by Peter and David and it actually had step-by-step instructions I could follow and that I felt were a good match with my un-bold personality.
Two years and a half years later I have done 9 deals. I cashed out of one and one was a flip.
If you're looking to get started in real estate, I give this book my highest recommendation.
