A fantastic introduction of an artist's vision for children.......1998-01-07

Eye catching, interesting, imaginative, and inspiring. These are things that hold a young persons attention and give them the interest to pursue art. Colleen Carroll has collected a fine group of art pieces that does all of these, plus her writing of the art and the artists help young people see not only animals, but everything in a different way. She asks many questions to help a child think and imagine. I think this is a fantastic book that should be in every child's library,even if most of the artists in the book are dead..... oh...except for me! My painting is on page 32.

A good supplement to his earlier books, but not a primer.......2004-06-15

This is not a good first book on camera repair, a distinction which has to be noted in contrast to his first book which is far more suitable as a primer. For the somewhat experienced phototechnician working on the classics covered in this book, it's a useful title. I would start with either his first two titles (Camera Maintenance and Repair 1 and 2),the classic Ed Romney text (Trade Secrets:Basic Training in Camera Repair), or if you can find them the old National Camera correspondence materials.

That said, given the proliferation of specific books he has produced, they are informative and useful within their scope.

This is an excellent repair book. Some who have reviewed this book are missing the point -- this repair knowledge transfers to many cameras other than the ones featured. So I wholeheartedly disagree that this book is for repairing only the specific cameras listed -- it provides scores of solutions for other cameras also. Ever tried to pull a viewfinder window? Ever wondered how to make spraypaint hard and tough? How to fill incised lettering with white paint? The difference between slow and fast epoxy? How to make bellows? How to refurb a resistor? How to clean aluminum? How to remove a round window without scratching it and without buying a special tool? How to mate helicals? How to prevent and repair battery acid damage? Where to obtain chemicals at low prices and when to use them? And on and on and on. Tomosy is like having an expert looking over your shoulder as you repair. I'm going to purchase the other Tomosy books after reading this one.

Its great if its talking about a camera you're working on..........2002-11-19

Its a great book if its talking specifically about the model of camera or shutter that you are trying to repair, and its got a surprisingly thorough section on bellows repair. Other than that the book is just OK. I would recommend buying this book if you have one of the cameras that are discussed inside it, which are covered from disassembly to reassembly. A Good Introduction.......2000-12-24

Not complete, but a good start for mostly pre-1945 cameras and lenses. The sections on bellows restoration and construction alone probably make this book a worthwhile purchase. Tomosy illustrates restoration techniques using specific cameras and lenses that are mostly common and relatively inexpensive. A couple of different Kodak Brownie cameras are two of the cameras examined in the chapter on folding cameras, for example. The Exacta VX, Nikkorex 35, Zeiss Contaflex, and Leica II are some of the models examined in the 35mm chapter. Other chapters cover Lenses and Lens Shutters, Wooden View Cameras, Large-Format Focal-Plane Shutters, Medium Format, and the Minox C. What keeps this from being 5 stars is Tomosy's too casual treatment of wood-, metal-, and leatherworking on a couple of his projects. However, he does include an appendix about tools, lubricants, parts suppliers, and other suggested readings.

Terry Stickels is amazing. If it took him as long to create these puzzles as it takes me to attempt to solve them, then he would never have enough to publish a book! That's the genius of his publications - they truly are a challenge to avid gamers and novices alike. I particularly like the fact that most are not solved through simple mathematical equations. Most require looking at problems in unique ways and evaluating outside of normal problem-solving methodologies. I enjoy sharing puzzles with friends and watching them flippantly give wrong answers based on the obvious. They quickly realize that correct answers require looking at the problem from several angles. Great mental exercises! I would recommend to all.

Stickels shines again in what I think are his best puzzles. This book has something for everyone--I love the wordplay, but many of my friends stop by my desk to help out with the mathmatical puzzles. I have been reading "Stickelers" in the Washington Post for some time, and this book continues the fun of his newspaper columns. I'm hoping he writes a book soon for my young nephews--it would be great to get them thinking on a higher level at an early age. Go for it, Terry!

As a survivor of the course based on this book and taught by Yuri himself at MIT, I must say that The Chicken from Minsk was a true challenge. The great thing about it is that it builds critical thinking skills while making even the nastiest math and physics (shall I dare say?) fun!

The former Soviet Union had a much more mathematically rigerous tradition in physics than did the rest of the world. These problems are word problems, and they will make you sweat. Ideal for the curious of all ages, but especially for teens, to keep their curiosity alive. I think highly of this book-gave 7 copies away this holliday season.

Today I was able to prove once again that mathematics is not just for a few. Challenging Brainteasers taught me how mathematics are not only fun but accesible to all. Besides enjoyig solving many of these brainteasers it provided me with many fine tools to work with my own children and students problems that I previously thought were imposible. I have found this fine collection of puzzles a wonderful source to stimulate my mathematics students. There are problems and puzzles of all levels of difficulty, and on a wide range of topics. Some are classics in a revised form but lots are new to me. All are great fun.

leaf through before you buy.......2001-01-03

Many curent puzzle books feature puzzles that are just old chestnuts dressed up in more modern language or settings,and this book, I'm afraid, is one of those.

Well, maybe I'm being a bit too critical. It's an OK collection if you're new to puzzles. But if you're a seasoned puzzle person, you really should leaf through it and judge by yourself whether it's good enough to fork down your hard earned dollars.

Oh, and the Mensa stamp of intellectual arrogance on the cover? Believe me, as a collector of puzzle books, it's no guarantee that the puzzles inside are that much more original than average fare - in fact, I find it downright pretentious.

This is a good book that can give beginners a good introduction to black jack and some of the casino rules. For non-beginners (people with some "know how") there is plenty of material to.

It gives you an overview of gambling/black jack history (very brief but interesting) and it tells you some of the "unwritten" rules that only people that visit casinos know. It provides you with fundamental rules, reference tables for different scenarios and advance techniques.

To the bottom line... I follow the book direction and it helped me to make enough money that my trip to Vegas was pretty much free. For my first attempt at black jack obviously I am happy, and I plan to read it again and check the advanced material for my next trip.

Finally, Black Jack is a lot more fun and intense than the roulette or the coin machines.

Good overview of the basic Blackjack strategy.......2001-05-28

Blackjack Strategy is a good overview of the game. The book starts with a brief history of the game and then quickly moves on to the "Basic Strategy" of Blackjack, i.e. minimizing your disadvantage.

The chapter on the basic strategy is enough to make you confident enough to tackle any Blackjack table without looking foolish. It will teach you when to hit, stand, double down, etc...

The next few chapters go on to describe a basic card counting strategy. It is easy enough to understand but if you are looking for some serious information on card counting this book will probabaly not be good enough by itself.

Overall the book was a quick read and easy to comprehend. If you are about to hit the Blackjack tables and want an understanding of the game and its strategies I would recommend reading this book before hand. This book is also a good reference with many tables in the appendix. You can easily read it in one sitting. If you are looking for a meaty book with ton's of detailed information you may want to look elsewhere.

Good if you want to play this game.......2006-03-24

This book is an excellent primer on one of the safest form of the options game, at least from the perspective of the brokerage industry. So, if you're bored with watching your portfolio creep around at a few percent a day, you can write (sell) a call option for $100 on a $5000 investment (for example) and have a pretty good chance of keeping the 2% at the end of the month. Lehman and McMillan do an excellent job of providing return formulae and web resources for further research. But the question remains: do you really want to get into this? (I admit it's addictive). If you do you'll turn into your own stock churner. The brokerage fees aren't too bad if you use one of the discounters, but get ready to do some major capital gains calculations (profits from unexercised options are all short-term capital gains). Here's a hint: this is NOT the way Warren Buffet got rich.

Probably the Best Available on the Subject to Date........2005-09-23

I liked this book and would recommend it to those interested in covered call writing. There are a few things to keep in mind while reading this book:

1- McMillan is a very well established authority on option strategies, I remember reading his options books way back in 1984, when I was the local options specialist at Dean Witter. However, if you read his comments on covered call writing in his other books, he's much more guarded with his support than he is in this text.

2- Nowhere in the book do the authors discuss the extreme increase in time and especially paperwork that is required to successfully implement this strategy. I've always thought of managing an equity portfolio as investing (mostly passive), managing covered call positions is more like work (trading takes lots of time and effort to do it right). That's OK, call writing also reduces risk and gives you a lot more control, but be prepared to invest a lot of your time.

3- In my experience, most people really have a hard time with this strategy. Yes, it's easy to implement, but most dedicated options traders find this a bit too basic for their interests, and it ties up too much capital. Most equity investors have a hard time with the amount of work, loss of long-term capital gains impacts, tax reporting headaches and giving up some appreciation potential.

4- The 20 stock study described in the book is very misleading. For some reason the positions with 163 months of data show covered writing (CW) underperforming a buy-and-hold (B&H) strategy by about 700 basis points. I don't know if this is due to a flaw in the data or something to do with option premiums in the early years of the study. Data from comparing
CW returns to BH returns for periods less than 163 months show identical returns between the two strategies. This is consistent with results from more rigorous academic studies, which generally show underperformance of covered writing of 30 to 50 basis points. This is also consistent with my own experience. This makes sense, since covered writing is slightly to moderately less risky than buy-and-hold investing, the returns should be similar or slightly lower.

The people who usually succeed with covered call writing tend to be really good percentage thinkers, very organized at tracking and analyzing investment results, and good with the basic record keeping. Those who thrive at it really love it, but it's not for everyone.

I wish the book would have addressed these issues. Also, there is a lot more strategy involved in managing a covered write portfolio than was discussed in this book. To my mind, the subject was over-simplified here. I think the book also should have spent more time suggesting cash-backed put writing, which is the sister strategy (and has equivalent risk and returns) to covered call writing.

Still, it's a very good book, and one I recommend without hesitation. I'm a big advocate of covered call writing and cash-backed put writing for those who are willing to take the plunge.

I also highly recommend The Conservative Investor's Guide to Trading Options by Leroy Gross (with a forward also by Larry McMillan).

Good, but not much new..........2004-12-20

This book, despite the title, does not really bring any new insights into the science (art?) of covered call writing. This material has been discussed in many different publications in many different forms. Primarily, the book is concerned with test data that aims to prove that a portfolio with long stock/short calls will outperform a long-only portfolio over time. The actual mechanics of how to do this are missing. Regardless, the data is interesting, and the discussion is useful, especially if you are a novice option trader.

excellent discourse on covered call writing.......2004-04-27

an excellent guide to understanding covered call writing. as a retiree and never having written covered calls, i am convinced it is an opportunity for conservative investors offering potential returns competitive with stock ownership alone and better returns than those available on bonds. mr.lehman covers all aspects, from underlying stock selection, selecting good covered writes, web sites offering all sorts of data and even tax consequences as structured by IRS.

Good book but lacks the "how to".......2004-02-11

This is a good book if you already have a grasp of the basic concepts of covered call writing but are more interested in the details of why covered call writing works rather than how to use the concept to make money. The author spends a lot of time going through esoteric details on black scholes models and comparisons between the buy and hold and covered call strategy but little time is spent on providing real market examples on how to use the concepts in the book to make money. As an investor and trader my main purpose of reading any book is to learn the "how to" practical concepts that work in real market situations to enhance my profits and this is where this book is deficient. Furthermore this book does not get into the art of picking the right stocks and the timing criteria needed to decide when a covered call is a good strategy and when it is a losing one.
This book deserves at least 4 stars for explaining the covered call concept in great details and proving its usefulness. To make the best use of this book you need to couple it with one that will give more practical examples on using these concepts in real life situations in addition to strategies of picking the right stocks to write covered calls on and critical timing strategies. The book that worked best for me was the recently published September 2003 Second Edition "generate thousands on your stocks without selling them " By Elias. Elias's book has extensive real market examples with many innovative and profitable concepts.
