Book Description
As period, as style, as sensibility, the Baroque remains elusive, its definition subject to dispute. Perhaps this is so in part because baroque vision resists separation of mind and body, form and matter, line and color, image and discourse. In Quoting Caravaggio, Mieke Bal deploys this insight of entanglement as a form of art analysis, exploring its consequences for both contemporary and historical art, as well as for current conceptions of history.
Mieke Bals primary object of investigation in Quoting Caravaggio is not the great seventeenth-century painter, but rather the issue of temporality in art. In order to retheorize linear notions of influence in cultural production, Bal analyzes the productive relationship between Caravaggio and a number of late-twentieth-century artists who "quote" the baroque master in their own works. These artists include Andres Serrano, Carrie Mae Weems, Ken Aptekar, David Reed, and Ana Mendieta, among others. Each chapter of Quoting Caravaggio shows particular ways in which quotation is vital to the new art but also to the source from which it is derived. Through such dialogue between present and past, Bal argues for a notion of "preposterous history" where works that appear chronologically first operate as an aftereffect caused by the images of subsequent artists.
Quoting Caravaggio is a rigorous, rewarding work: it is at once a meditation on history as creative, nonlinear process; a study of the work of Caravaggio and the Baroque; and, not least, a brilliant critical exposition of contemporary artistic representation and practice.
Customer Reviews:
Almost nothing to do with Caravaggio.......2006-06-12
Long story short: this is a spectacularly pretentious book that says precious little about Caravaggio or his art.
90% of the book is the kind of vapid talk, talk, talk that has meaning only to the kind of phony "artists" who populate our cities and museums with ugliness and nonsense. Though a very few pieces are shown to "quote" from Carvaggio, most have nothing to do with his art. So why are they discussed in this book? Is this book nothing more than a marketing gimmick for lousy artists?
There's the artist who copies a small section of Caravggio's "Christ and Saint Thomas," and below it displays a square filled with red Jello. OK, at least the "work" has something do with the great master. But how about the installation that consists of 7 benches that have leaky red gelatin atop them in the place of cushions? And where do Andre Seranno's morgue photos or his "P*ss Christ" fit in -- except perhaps to shock the reader?
This book is a complete load of nonsense. But it *is* expensive. Do avoid this if you are looking for a serious look at more than a handful of Caravaggio's works, accompanied by a sensible discussion of his craft and subjects.
visual narratology.......2002-03-11
This is a joy to read for someone who loves Caravaggio and who's interested in modern art. The book is full of wonderful prints of art works and reading the comparisons between baroque masterpieces and modern installation art and paintings increases my pleasure in both.
In addition, Mieke Bal is a prominent narratologist, and her discussions of the narrative aspects of the visual art she discusses are fascinating. She proposes a narratology that surpasses the limited formalist categories, and theorises a narration in visual art, both in art with textual components and seemingly abstract, or at least non-figurative art. This interdisciplinary is very valuable at a time when discussions of narrative in visual art and new media generally are divided into an exaggerated formalist denial of narrativity or a naive assumption that "everything is narrative".
Spectacular images, intelligent writing.......1999-11-06
I've never seen such high quality color reproduction in an academic text. Chicago UP should be congratulated for doing such a fine job. Gorgeous images. And the choice of images is thought-provoking - a wonderful array of artists. Bal's argument made me think about artists like Serrano in a new way. I wasn't familiar with Ken Aptekar, but I'll definitely try to find out more about his work. Bal's writing is lucid, intelligent - stimulating stuff.
gorgeous provocative book.......1999-09-29
a terrific study of history and questions of influence in the arts...spectacular design and color illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
A must for all comedy fans!.......2005-09-28
The main thing that makes this book invaluable is the Stan Laurel-authored scripts to live Laurel & Hardy stage shows, and Laurel & Hardy radio performances. It also included an assortment of great gag ideas Laurel had for films that were never used.
This book also helps set the record straight that Stan Laurel was the real creative force behind his best movies, even though others always got writing and directing screen credit.
Historical interest aside, the Laurel & Hardy scripts are great reading for sheer entertainment value.
Even if you've seen every Laurel & Hardy film made, realize that the Laurel & Hardy characters had a handful of other adventures which were not filmed. This book is a priceless way to access these great scripts.
If you haven't seen many Laurel & Hardy films, rent some. I can recommend almost every Laurel & Hardy film made, with only a small handful of exceptions.
After you've seen enough Laurel & Hardy films to become a fan, read this book. You're sure to love it.
This is author/compiler John McCabe's _third_ book on the subject of Laurel and Hardy. His first book was a concise but excellent biography of Laurel and Hardy in the early 1960's, called "Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy." McCabe had met Laurel & Hardy in person when he first started that project, and he wrote that meeting L&H in person, and finding them to be such nice people in real life, was "like finding out Santa Claus actually existed."
McCabe also co-authored a 1975 pictorial filmography called "Laurel and Hardy."

If you haven't seen many Laurel & Hardy films, rent some. I can recommend almost every Laurel & Hardy film from before 1941. (Their post-1940 films were mediocre at best, mainly because Laurel had very little creative input to his films of that period.)

Book Description
A smart way to teach children to think logically and creatively One of the most precious gifts you can offer a child is a sharp mind. The 56 puzzles in this delightful collection were passed down through generations of Chinese families who wanted their children to develop concentration and mental agility. Baifang spent hours enjoying them with her family and friends as she was growing up in the north of China. Now living in San Francisco, Baifang is passing them on to her own children and to families everywhere. Each puzzle inspires clear, precise, and inventive thinking. Some teach math concepts; others involve spatial relationships and visualization. All of them have fascinating solutions and help improve memory and problem-solving skills. An inexhaustible source of challenging fun, these are mental calisthenics for stimulating interaction between lively minds from ages 8 to 80.
Customer Reviews:
challenging.......2001-01-04
The majority of this book is full of puzzles that you can do with toothpicks...take four toothpicks and make a square then move two of them to make something else. The last part of the book has word/logic problems like the man with the boat trying to move the goat, the cabbage and the wolf to the other side. (Of course the problem is the goat will eat the cabbage, and the wolf will eat the goat, so how will he do it?!?) The first part is good for spacial reasoning--getting kids to recognize and find alternative ways of looking at the problem. It will be a good book for younger kids, but it's also something you can do with older kids because it's the challenge that catches their attention. I've even pulled in logical-thinking should-be-doing-something-else adults for quite some time with these puzzles!
It is very boring.......1998-04-29
It didn't help my child at all. She is dumber now than when she started out. She learned more from watching Seasame Street. You need to come up with interesting art that will actually get a lift out of people. -anna poulter
Book Description
Get your family's brains going with 57 more creative calisthenics for the mind
In China, for centuries it has been acknowledged that early childhood training supports lifelong intellectual growth. For generations, parents have taught their children "brain games"—delightful amusements that challenge the intellects of young people while appealing to their senses of fun and play. While growing up in China, Baifang learned scores of such games that both challenged and intrigued her. Now she shares 57 new stick-puzzle, number, and shape games for children and parents everywhere to share and enjoy. A terrific way to stimulate parent-child interaction, these quick and challenging puzzles and brain teasers enhance creative capacity and logic, fostering problem-solving skills and mathematical awareness.
Baifang came to the United States from China in 1977 and earned a degree in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. Since then, she has worked on various media and cultural exchange programs with China. She is also the author of Chinese Brain Twisters.
Customer Reviews:
not just for kids.......2006-11-10
These brain twisters offer something all ages can enjoy doing alone or together.
Yeah, I know, we buy this for the kids, but then we ourselves end up just as happy to solve the puzzles--kinda like the ol' story of the model train set that the father loves to set up!
These are great brain exercises. While you're finding patterns and working with visual spatial cues, you're also building connections in the brain, making neurodevelopmental connections based on the perceptual discrimination, etc. required.
These are also great socializing ice-breakers--when you or your kids learn a few, all you need is a few toothpicks or the like, and you've got puzzles in mind that you can set up anywhere.
Great games that kids enjoy.......2000-06-15
I've used the first volume with my after-school class and the kids really enjoy these. The book is designed for a parent or teacher to set up the games and it is not a workbook that the kids can use alone - a plus if you are looking to spend some quality time with your child. The stick games help kids develop visual and conceptuial skills in a fun and clever way.
Book Description
This book ranks and profiles 170 top retirement towns and major metropolitan areas according to tax burdens places on retirees. The authors identify the best tax heavens and the worst tax hells.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful.......2005-07-17
There are two key words in the title to this book which to those considering retirement are a must: "Low-Tax"! If for some reason you missed that pitch maybe the second clue as to whom the book might appeal to is those on fixed incomes; ie. those who haved retired. Because we all know that taxes are an item over which we have little control, it behooves us to find a place we can stand to live that also might be a "tax heaven" instead of a "tax hell" to use terms supplied by the authors. I found that definitive term well applied by the authors but would not necessarily agree as to their choice of the best places to live in the states which have low tax rates. This book determines places with low taxes based on the things which the average joe pays taxes: personal and real property, income, purchases. Some web sites such as the one produced by the Tax Foundation of America base their ratings on "per capita income" of all taxes, including business taxes and thus don't accurately reflect how individual tax rates might affect the retiree. This book avoids that trap. Now if you can afford to purchase a home in these "tax heavens" you are really set. Remember people who have retired have fixed incomes from pensions, social security, personal savings (IRA's,etc.) and so on. They have to limit governement access to those funds. States with NO income tax certainly have to be a place to start.
disappointed.......2002-04-21
The authors, due to space considerations, do not include the nature and source of incomes used for their comparisons. Without this information, how can one determine if they fit the profile used.
Without knowing the amounts of various sources of incomes used,
I find the book of little use.
