    Book Description

Modern and contemporary women's artistic production of autobiography frequently occurs at the interfaces of image and text. The many permutations of words and images in all their modes of production--photograph, pose, invocation, written narrative, sculpture, dance, diatribe--create countless possibilities of expression, and this volume charts some of the ways in which women artists are seizing these possibilities.
Editors Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson have been at the vanguard of the study of women's self-representation, and here have collected leading critics' and scholars' thoughts on artistic fusions of the visual and autobiographical. Marianne Hirsch, Linda Hutcheon, Linda Kauffman, Nellie McKay, Marjorie Perloff, Lee Quinby, and the other contributors offer new insights into the work of such artists as Laurie Anderson, Judy Chicago, Frida Kahlo, Orlan, and Cindy Sherman. From a painter's diary to a performance artist's ritualized enactments of kitchen domesticity, the many narratives of the self arising from these artists' negotiations of the visual and textual prove to be goldmines for analysis.
Art historians, artists, critics, literary scholars in women's studies, and anyone interested in the forms and implications of depicting the self will enjoy this richly illustrated collection.
Sidonie Smith is Professor of English, University of Michigan. Julia Watson is Associate Professor of Comparative Studies, The Ohio State University. They also edited Reading Autobiography: A Guide for Interpreting Life Narratives and Women, Autobiography, Theory: A Reader.

This is a very good book to read if you are already familiar with microcontroller basics. Otherwise, you will get deluged by the details. The book is very hands on. The pin logics are explained in great detail. However, the assembly language used
in this book does not allow labels, so all the cross-references in the codes are made using actual hexadecimal numbers. This occasionally makes the codes difficult to read. There are lots of COMPLETE examples (not merely code snippets) in the book. If you know the basics, and want to invest in a book that will give you a thorough understanding of the HC11, then this is a good book for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Book 7 -- Goddess Power Failure.......2003-05-18

This graphic novel covers the original Japanese manga volume 6 chapters 40 - 42 and volume 7 chapters 43 & 44. Each chapter is a seperate story with 41-43 covering the story arc of the goddesses losing their main power source.

In the first story, Belldandy restores everything from the Lord of Terror's attack before resealing her power. Skuld challenges Megumi to a contest using homemade robots. In the second story, the goddesses have lost their primary power sourse causing them to change in appearance while Keiichi searches for an alternate solution to the problem.

In the third tale, has found a solution and restores Skuld, but there's not enough power left for Urd. Now in the form of a young girl, Urd befriends a young boy. The fourth story has the goddesses restored but Urd feeling the need to repay Keiichi for all he has done. It is time for another one of her love potions to help Belldandy and Keiichi "get it on".

The final tale has Belldandy knitting a sweater for Keiichi while Sayoko plots her downfall.

Bottom line: this book sees a return to the classic OMG humor that was missed in the previous book. OMG fans should have this in their collection. People looking for light reading material should look no further.

5 out of 5 stars How goddesses get their energy back..........2003-04-15

The goddesses have a direct link with the heavenly computer Yggdrasil, which supplies them with power and energy to live, as well as the ability to make their ten-dimensional forms 3-d. But what happens when Yggdrasil crashes?

Belldandy begins falling asleep EVERYWHERE at ANY time. Urd starts drinking more alcohol than usual, and Skuld becomes the Customer of the Year at Mayfield ice cream plant. But even this is not enough, and they start experiencing other side effects. Skuld, being the Goddess of the Future, starts to grow at an alarming rate, until she is an adult. But she is growing so fast that soon she will be an old woman! As the Goddess of the Past, Urd is having the oppposite problem. She is regressing into childhood, and soon she will be a baby!

With Skuld growing old before her time and Urd in danger of never being born, what can Keiichi do? Belldandy's no help--she's too busy reinacting the story of Rip Van Winkle!

    5 out of 5 stars A great manga title.......2003-02-12

I used to think comics were for kids. The key words here are "used to." Having enjoyed the Oh My Goddess! OVA series immensely, I decided to give the manga a try, and that was a decision I won't regret it.

The great thing about OMG is that it's a cute and funny romance with deeper aspects thrown into it as well. "Queen of Vengeance" is no exception. There's a bit of everything: a parody of Shakespeare, further proof that Skuld is a mega mecha genius (pun intended), plenty of sake and ice cream, touching moments in Urd's Fantastic Adventure (I love that chapter!) and a lot of laughs to top it all off. I won't start going into the plot, others have done a better job of that than I can.

The artwork? In one word: lovely. The character designs are really well drawn, having evolved a lot from their notably worse original forms from the earliest volumes. It's a shame in a way that the pictures are only presented in black and white, but the overall quality makes up for this.

A really good thing about this edition is that the paper is thick and you can't see what's on the other side of the page, with a few minor exceptions. And the ink hasn't smudged or been transferred onto the adjacent page...at least in my copy.

I personally think that the reading level of 9-12 years is a little harsh. Sure, it's not the most difficult of books to read, understand and (hopefully) enjoy, but the nature of the OMG series and its plot can appeal to a much wider age group. I really like it and, as Skuld would say, "I am NOT a kid! Biiii-da!". Also, there are some incidents of nudity (although these are hardly hentai), mild swearing at one point, and cases of alcohol consumption and drunkedness. Some parents might not want their younger children reading this.

Highly recommended for any OMG or manga fan...although, in the latter case, I'd advise you to watch the OVAs first or read the preceding manga.

5 out of 5 stars Robots, Moon Rocks, and Sayoko Mishima.......2002-01-06

Another great volume in the Oh My Goddess! series. In the first story we start where we left off in the last voume. First Belldandy repairs the Morisato residence with her uber powers and then Megumi, Keiichi's little sister, comes to check up on him. Skuld in the meantime has been repairing Keiichi's motorcycle. Megumi tells Skuld that there is a design flaw. This angers the young goddess, so she challanges Megumi to a duel. Tamiya over hearing this, decides that Skuld will face Megumi in a Robot war. Megumi defeats Skuld, so the pretty little goddess makes her robot self destruct! Later in the book, because the Yggdrasil system is out of order. The goddesses need another way to replinish their energy. The lack of energy has weird effects on the goddesses: Belldandy falls asleep for days, so she goes into chibi form to conserve energy, Skuld craves ice cream, and ages rapidly, and Urd craves sake and becomes younger. Luckily it is soon discovered that Moon Rocks replinish the girls' power. However, there wasa design flaw so Urd was only able to grow only a little. Not wanting to stay at home, Urd goes out and meets a young boy named Shohei Yoshida. They become fast friends. The boy falls in love with Urd at first sight, and it seems that Urd falls for him also. You need to read the rest of the story yourself. In my humble opinion itis one of the best. Later we see a drunk Sayoko Mishima stumble out a bar and make her way to Keiichi's temple, and she bangs the bell, Keiichi goes out and brings her in. touching stuff follows. Another one of my favorite chapters, but that is probably because i like Sayoko sso much! ^_^

5 out of 5 stars You'd be a failure as an anime fan if you don't read this!.......2001-04-04

Honestly, the first time I bought this manga series, I did not expect much. I thought, okay, this is just some dumb childish story. Good thing I gave it a chance! Now I can't help but read this over and over again! I get something new out of it every time. Now, I'm saving up money to buy the rest of this series plus some subtitled videos. I recommend this fully, and beware of addiction! It's a romance/comedy leaning more towards romance. Yes, it is very funny and romantic. Some jokes the author uses are never-before-seen. We should all appreciate that tidbit, at least. The characters. Oh, what do I have to say about them? They're wonderful!! Each goddess has a unique personality. I do not want to give anything away, but please read it. It is worth your every penny and minute spent.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Silman may be overkilling it.......2007-07-12

The principles this book teaches are indeed invaluable and may be eye-opening for the intermediate and even good player. Some are well-known and some would never be thought of by the amateur. However, it's quite time-consuming, and I'm still ambivalent about whether or not the massive amounts of annotated games and examples do more harm than good. I find the majority of the games Silman lists are only slightly and/or temporarily relevant to the themes he teaches at any moment.

              Some more detailed complaints:

The biggest problem to me is that the book fails as an instructional guide in that I feel it's incomplete in many of its teachings. For example, Silman emphasizes the importance of controlling or occupying weak squares, putting your Rooks on open files and applying pressure to the kingside pawns. However, he could've done a much better job of teaching what to do once that's accomplished. "Okay, my Knight's on the e5 support point. Now what?" "Okay, I have an Alekhine's Gun pointed at the g7 pawn in front of the enemy King. Now what? That pawn's defended by four other pieces!"

The second problem is the aforementioned verbosity. Related to this is that Silman lists a huge collection of examples for all the themes he teaches. However, going through them is too time-consuming for their own good, especially because the point he stresses is only temporarily or peripherally touched by them. The majority of these examples are from real games, and I feel he could've been more straight and to the point by using hypothetical positions and playing only a few moves per game to demonstrate that point instead of making the reader play a couple of 30 to 40-move games.

A final complaint is about one of the most important features of this book: Silman's Thinking Technique. He devotes a few pages describing it and hardly touches it again. He should have made the rest of the themes he teaches more relevant to the thinking technique.

With all that said, I believe it's a good, solid book; probably one of the most quintessential for the 1200-1700 level player. If you're really serious about chess study, also purchase his 'Reassess Your Chess Workbook' to get a complete education of what Silman teaches in this one. You'll have a better idea of how to use imbalances to your advantage after working through the exercises listed therein.

              5 out of 5 stars Great middle-game book.......2007-03-18

This book has helped me improve my game more than any other I have ever read. It is not the proper book for the novice and it requires a lot of work from the reader.
I can't claim that I worked as hard as J.Silman requires but the time I spent reading and thinking certainly took place.
Some reviewers say that there are weaknesses in the positions and that computer analysis proves that there are better solutions than those proposed in the book. I didn't check anything with a program and don't really care to do so.
This book has given me new ways to think during the middle game.
It doesn't refer at all on the opening (although all middle games derive from openings!) and occupies only few pages on the endgame.
              Overall... five stars. It's worthy.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2007-01-26

This is the best chess book I have read so far. I have read a handful or two in my life. After using this book my rating jump 400 points. Next, I am getting Reassess Your Chess Handbook and Amateurs Mind also by Jeremy Silman. I am sure they will be just as good. This is a must have book for all levels.

4 out of 5 stars Important Concepts explained for the Intermediate Player.......2006-11-28

This is an overall good book covering various concepts that the author feels are important. There are a lot of good lessons in this book. Perhaps a little bit of grammer improvement and a little more clarity could be used in a few cases. I liked the part about if you have a bad Bishop to try and get the Bishop on the other side of the Pawns. The author's "How to Reasses your chess workbook" is good and I think the game analysis books, "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" and "Logical Chess, Move by Move" also go well with this one.
This is a book for an intermediate player.

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE the "average review".......2006-11-26

Alright alright, it averages 4.5 stars in Amazon. But take a closer look -- how many 5 star reviews are more then three or four lines long? How many include references to material included in the book, or, heaven forbid, citations? This book has a reputation that far precedes it, and while there are certainly useful ideas in it, the book presents a very one-sided, hard-to-learn approach to chess.

When I first started using this book as a 1400, I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread; finally a book on how to play chess positionally, presented with an easy structure and presentation! Silman offers a very easy, "scientific" approach to the game by listing seven imbalances and subsequently devoting a substantial amount of time to each. As soon as I'd finished the book (or was partway through) I started to try this same thing in my games. And suprise of all surprises...it didn't work. Why not?

The book ALWAYS presents the critical position of a game, lists the imbalances, then plays a tactical sequence that is "winning" (not always, as in the Silman-Federowicz game, where black's dragon should win). There is a complete lack of holism in the examples given, and so the question of *when* to use Silman's scheme doesn't really work. Chess is more dynamic that Silman's rigid structural evaluations can hope to accomplish. There are many openings, middlegames, and even endgames that require much more sophisticated planning than seven imbalances can hope to achieve.

A personal pet peeve that I and others have about this book is how Silman almost always uses himself for examples. Once at a tournament a friend came back from his round and told us he played "just like Silman". We took a look at his score card and saw that next to every one of his moves was "!!" and his opponent had earned "??" for her moves. Jeremy Silman loves to heap his moves with "!" even when it isn't earned. It wouldn't be problematic to be an egoist, but for a developing chessplayer, all the "!" and "?" give a very false impression of how chess really is played.

Jeremy Silman is a guy that gets a lot of credit for this book because it's favored by lazier teachers and students; it tries to give an easy fix to an incommensurable puzzle. Positional chess is not always about the imbalances, and not every move gets an "!". Your opponents will not always play "?" moves and many times the imbalances will shift every single move. It is a much more amorphous entity than this book presents.

The book does deserve credit for putting together -somewhat- useful examples. You get an idea, albeit a very compartmentalized one, of how to plan in chess. It's not all bad, but PLEASE read the reviews of the book that don't focus on "this book made me into a succhess story!" Think twice about taking the easy road in chess, and replan a purchase to an annotated full-game collection by a higher-caliber player.

This was the third chess book I purchased in my hopes tofind a book that you could read like a book, instead ofreference. There are of course many books out there that do just this. SILMAN IS A TERRIFIC AUTHOR! I can read this book on and off, improving my chess with whatever amount of time I choose to spend on it. He also mixes in humor and a real zest for attack and foiling your opponent. Purchase other books for reference, but pick this one for improving your attack skills and "thinking on the fly".

5 out of 5 stars Takes mystery out of chess planning.......1996-12-18

Can't praise this book too highly. Silman shows that each chess position can be analyzed to reveal imbalances which form the basis for planning how to proceed. While many chess books have dealt with the chess theory, Silman has a genius for identifying when the theory applies to a particular position. Planning your next move is demystified. For each type of imbalance, the reader is shown what must be done to take advantage of that type of position. This book is a model of instructional writing. The book contains useful problems after each section, each problem with a clearly explained answer. The author incorporates grandmaster games and games of more humble origins. His experience in teaching chess has allowed him to explain abstract chess theory in the clearest terms. For once the claims on the cover of a chess book are more than justified. You can't read this book and not improve your chess. It is suitable for any player beyond beginner level who wants to be a strong player.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must buy - teaches one how to judge positions........1996-06-08

Silman goes through many instructive examples which illustrate particular themes such as: good knight vs. bad bishop, isolated Q-pawn, space advantage, etc. Unlike other chess manuals such as My System by Nimzowitsch, Silman refrains from using lofty language. Instead, via simple and direct words, he conveys to the reader the essence of the position, and how to arrive at a proper evaluation. Definitely worthwhile reading for all chess lovers.

Griffin's work here in exposing the banking cartel is truly a fascinating read, but I am left wondering about the truths of many of his assertions. The author writes with a clearly anti-socialist, pro-libertarian bias, and in at least a few examples completely distorts truths to make his point.

In one example, he maintains that Abraham Lincoln was a white supremacist, quoting Lincoln from a campaign speech where he states he has never been, and never will be in favor of equality of the white and black races. Griffin fails to point out, however, that this speech was made in a southern state, and only weeks prior Lincoln says the opposite in a speech in the North. See Zinn's 'A Peoples History' for exact details.

A friend of mine--who is one of those rare fellows who actually worries about the national debt (which according to this link is ~$9 trillion and counting... fast)--laid Creature on me last time we broke bread together. In this tome, author Edward Griffin delivers a devastating expose on the background, execution, and remedies to the Federal Reserve Banking system (FRBS).

The system, which amounts to a national bank under control of (surprise) the money interests who dominate the government of the United States, was rather sneakily enacted into law by Congress just before Christmas recess in 1913. Creature shows how this surreptitious meeting on Jekyll Island, a private resort off the coast of Georgia owned by J.P. Morgan and associates, led to the FRBS and its seemingly unlimited license to steal continuously from the productive class.

The men came to the island in November of 1910 courtesy of Aldrich's splendiferous private railway car; every effort was made to conceal their identities and the nature of their business. News did not leak until 1916 when a young financial reporter for Leslie's Weekly, B.C. Forbes (who later founded Forbes Magazine) wrote a story about the meeting... approvingly.

Griffin lays out the objectives of these less-than-magnificent seven straightforwardly, then, what follows is history, as they say. And "history" should be the middle name of Griffin's fascinating book, which is largely a compendium of how the American and world economies developed from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Griffin makes everything so crystal clear, even I can comprehend it. (I can honestly assert that finally, after all the books I've read over the years on money and banking, I truly understand how the federales create money out of thin air.)

                  ...

I first read this book back in 1998. I just got done re-reading it because I work in the financial industry and I wanted to re-arm myself with some good information to advise my clients about. As I write this Sunday 8/12/07, we have seen this Fed spring into action the last week just as Mr. Griffin explained they would when the s**t is hitting the fan. They created $38 billion out of thin air to bail out the hedge funds and institutions with corrosive sub prime mortgage bonds on their books. We are starting to see the alchemy of modern finance come apart at the seams.

I also loved this book because it reads like history book. This country is in bad shape because of central bank planning. It's time to get back to sound money like the founders stipulated in the Constitution. Vote for Ron Paul for President.

                  3 out of 5 stars Overwrought.......2007-06-30

This author obviously has an agenda. He attaches way too much intelligence to 'conspirators', as if they were the devil incarnate. While a lot of the information and the quotes were interesting, the overwrought tone of the book diminishes its value in my eyes. He borders on sounding like he's raving.

The part about future bank runs was hilarious. How many people keep significant amounts of savings in a bank any longer? How many Americans actually have any savings? A bank run in the 21st century? Ridiculous!

1 out of 5 stars Disaster for bankers.......2007-06-06

If the information contained in this book gets into the hands of too many people, this could destroy the money monopoly machine owned by the Rothchild family, the Queen of England et al.

It could all come tumbling down for these fine people - what would they do?

This book is not main stream. Its critics would probably call it the radical theories of a "gold bug". A more "establishment" answer to the criticisms brought up in this book can be found in Galbraith's - Money, From Whence It Came and Where It Went.
This book is structured very well. It is easy to read and very persuasive but if you are like me, after you finish this book you will have more questions than you have answers.
The book makes some good points on the other hand it promotes many fantasies.
Mr. Griffin could be right on many things but his answers for the most part would not make things better - but worse in my opinion.
The solution to the MONEY problem are more complicated than the answers that are supplied here. This book is a good book to buy and to read but one must read it very critically - very critically.

If you, like me, believe that the truth doesn't always makes sense, but the WHOLE TRUTH usually does, then you will appreciate and value this well researched, carefully written work by G.E. Griffin. Even so, this is just the tip of a much bigger iceberg, but for anyone who wants to know why the working class has to work so hard, just to go backwards, you will find out a very definitive answer in this book. This book is a must have for any TRUTH SEEKER fighting for facts in an age of profiteering deceipt. If you are new to economics, please read "Whatever Happened To Penny Candy" by Richard J. Maybury and Jane A. Williams first and you will know more than than most politicians. Griffins other book, "A World Without Cancer" is equally as researched, informative, and important.

When I first read this book - I had only just begun looking at the banking system and how it worked. My knowledge extended a bit past CNBC - but not much. I found it understandable and enjoyable. Since my original read (about 3 years ago) I have read it again and bought a second copy to loan out - I don't want to lose my original. I'm not sure Joe Average could simply pick it up and be enthralled, but if you have an interest in the banking system - this is a great book - even if you have little background in the subject.

WHY DO BANKS GET INVOLVED IN APPROVING HOME LOANS ON OVER VALUED PROPERTY...KNOWING FORECLOSURES WILL SOON SKYROCKET? WHY DOES THE US SELL WEAPON TECHONOLOGY TO COUNTRIES THAT, WE CITIZENS ARE TOLD, ARE PROBLEM COUNTRIES? WHY HAS THE CIA TRAINED FOREIGN BORN INDIVIDUALS, SUCH AS, BIN LADEN AND OTHERS KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT? THE MEDIA REPORTS EVENTS AND WE ASSUME THAT IT IS TRUE...THAT IT REPRESENTS REALITY. BUT, THIS BOOK WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. THEN YOU WILL REALIZE HOW FOOLISH WE ARE TO LIVE IN THIS "WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE" THAT THE MEDIA HAS CREATED FOR US.

You can read the other reviews for synopsis and overviews. This is a must read and should be required reading for all Americans. It is a well researched and footnoted exposition on the Federal Reserve and far more. Griffin goes into fascinating asides regarding the origins of money and banking and the ways that bankers have instigated wars while supporting both sides. This book should be of great interest to those who enjoy either history, finance, foreign affairs, mystery or politics and answers many questions as to why the "world" is as it is today. The first 50 pages are a little slow and then it reads like a detective novel. It could even be argued that it's one's duty to read this book.
