The Laws of Simplicity (Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life)
ASIN: 9889809729 |
Book Description
Despite the fact that the Japanese graphic design scene has encountered countless cultural invasions of late, Japanese graphics have withstood these incursions and continue to communicate on a common wavelength. This is precisely what makes Japanese graphics so unique and so difficult to imitate. Regardless of genre or aesthetic preference Japanese graphic artists all seem to aspire and adhere to a specific code of streamlined beauty. Japanese Graphics: Beautifully Streamlined focuses on the creative scene in 21st Century Japan from the perspective of the Japanese graphic artist and probes deeply into the psyches of some of Japan's most influential and internationally successful designers. As with most books from IdN, Japanese Graphics is exquisitely packaged , featuring a die-cut waveform top edge and translucent plastic slipcase, the very embodiment of the "Beautifully Streamlined" aesthetic.

Customer Reviews:
A good introductory book.......2006-04-23
This is a good entry-level book written in an easy tone, the author is currently giving lecture in China.
The whole book uses less than ten equations, however, this is the point that anyone with any background can read through this book without difficulties.
A job-saver!!!.......2003-02-12
I started a job as a technical writer at a semiconductor company in April, 2002. A couple weeks later, I bought this book because I didn't totally understand what the industry was all about. It has really taught me everything I needed to know about the semiconductor industry, and the role my company's products play in it.
The reason I give it 4 stars is because at one (early) point the book says "this is the hardest math in this book," which just isn't true. However, anyone who passed high school algebra 2 will be able to do the rest of the math in the book, or you can skip it if you're not looking for a math/science lesson.
If you are learning about semiconductors for a job, or you are starting an academic program in semiconductor engineering, this is a terrific book. I don't know if experienced engineers will find it useful, as I'm not an experienced engineer. Every new tech writer to come into the company has also borrowed this book during the first couple of weeks, just to help them get into the swing of things.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is another of the big Alex Ross showcasts, but this time, rather than just highlighting or spotlighting one of the heroes, they have gone for the whole team approach, and thrown the Justice League in there. If you like Alex Ross and the hwole oversized artwork thing, then no reason you won't like this one, either.
Fabulous! The Justice League rocks!.......2006-04-23
Very entertaining story. Spectacular Artwork. If you like the work of Paul Dini and Alex Ross then you cant go wrong with this one.
Awsome!.......2005-09-16
The design and work of Ross show us he is over the top, even if the work is based in simple but effective visual elements. The story is good but it could be deeper, like more psychological issues between the characters.
In summary "a must have" for the Ross' fans.
Breathtaking Graphic Novel!.......2005-07-22
If you're a DC fan of a certain age, you will certainly appreciate this breathtaking graphic novel which features the superheroes (and a few super villains) from the classic DC Comics Universe!
The story is eerily timely and the characters seductively drawn (there are definite moments when "Atom" and "Wonder Woman" merit a Parent Guidance advisory), but no one does it better than Alex Ross. If only Hollywood would learn to appreciate his gift to comics the way that James Cameron utilized Ken Marschall's artistic talents when it came to the TITANIC.
A joy to read for the story...and a feast for the eyes. Love, love, love it!
The Old Guard saves the world.......2004-06-10
The classic silver age Justice League of America save the world one more time. All of the old familiar members are here: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Atom, Martian Manhunter, as well as the "associate members" from Black Canary to Zatanna. Yet they all fit together perfectly- for this is primarily a tale of teamwork for the greater good. There is no squabbling and conflict of egos here. That is because these are all men and women whose only reason to BE is to help those who need their help. Each individual member has been gifted with powers and abilities that would enable them to easily overwhelm ordinary men and rule as kings or queens- yet none of them would consider such a thing for an instant. Individually and collectively the League stands for liberty and justice. They are altruism, and incorruptibility, incarnate. Their code is simple: Wherever lives are threatened, a champion will fight to save them. On land or sea the rules are simple, those who use force will find it returned in kind- and killing is never tolerated.
If the League has flaw, it lies in the fact that they are too powerful, too perfect. Lesser men hold them in suspicion. When a super-plague breaks out in Africa they are hard pressed to maintain their sacred trust in the face of global fury and desperation. And yet they do, for they know that their greatest power comes from the belief that the people have in them as allies and friends.
I have read all of the Paul Dini and Alex Ross collaborations. I won't say that this one is my favorite- what I will say is that they are all good.

Wish You Were Here - But You Wouldn't Like to Be.......2002-01-24
The trouble with this book is that the postcards (reprinted AS tear-out postcards) are SO good you want to rip them all out and send them to your friends. You really should buy three of them - one to keep, one to use and one a spare. At any rate you will be amazed at the number of bowling alleys, abbatoirs and kiddie golf resorts which issued bad postcards from the period 1945-75.

Gloriously Tacky!.......1999-12-15
REVENGE OF THE SON OF THE WORLD'S TACKIEST POSTCARDS is indeed tacky. I had no idea that the world was peppered with postcards such as these. In here you'll see hilarious cards from the 50's and 60's and find yourself asking, "why would someone send a postcard about chopped Balkan horse hearts?" Just be glad someone did, otherwise your everyday boring life would be deprived of such campy, pointless humor. This is a book you'll pick up periodically for years and laugh ferociously every time. I promise. A BONUS: The postcards are perforated and ready to send! Certainly a must!

The Illustrated Star Wars Universe (Star Wars)
ASIN: 0811801012 |
Amazon.com
Nowadays nearly everything linked with the original Star Wars trilogy is valuable, from bottle caps to shoelaces to posters. This beautiful volume, published by Chronicle Books, follows the design and development of these items--and the development of George Lucas from filmmaker into "merchandiser par excellence." Even casual fans will be delighted by dozens of photos of toys they wanted, toys they had, and toys they wish had been made. Models of some of these never-produced toys provide tantalizing glimpses of what might have been, for better or worse. Thankfully Leia wasn't turned into a Barbie clone, but what child wouldn't have loved a Boba Fett's Bounty Set? Many familiar characters and vehicles are accompanied by concept sketches marked by Lucas's rubber stamps, from "O.K." (translation: try again) to "WONDERFUL." The marketing blitz may be off-putting, but it is fascinating to look back over the wide range of licensed products: linens, shoes, watches, and, of course, food. You might remember C-3POs and the ice-cream bars, but did you know that English fans were offered Star Wars Yogurts with flavors such as Luke Skywalker raspberry, Darth Vader black cherry, and tasty Jabba the Hutt peach melba? A photograph of a tiny, vinyl-caped Jawa action figure, now selling for several hundred dollars, reminds us of the true lesson of Star Wars: You should have held on to those toys! --C.B. Delaney
Book Description
The three films of the Star Wars sagaStar Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and the Return of the Jedirank among the most popular of the modern era, with ticket and merchandise sales in excess of three billion dollars. A detailed look into the early years of Star Wars collectibles.......2005-12-10
I have been a big Star Wars fan since the first film was released back in 1977. I used to own many of the old action figures and played with them all the time up until my grandmother gave them away to the Goodwill. I picked up this book in 1997 just as I was getting back into collecting Star Wars figures once again. This is a very detailed book with lots of great color photos. Seeing the pictures of all of the older toys brought back a lot of memories. And it makes you stop and think about how much your old collection would have been worth if you had saved it. I recommend this book to anyone who is a true Star Wars fan and collector. You will not be disappointed.
My favorite book on Star Wars..........2005-09-28
This is definetly the best book on Star Wars I've ever read...
The beautifully designed coffee-table book takes the reader through the process of creating the Star Wars galaxy and then turning it into one of the most successful toylines in history. There are tons of photos depicting vintage Kenner toys as well as other merchandise.
The illustrations come with quite an informative text by journalist and collector Stephen J. Sansweet -- truely an expert when it comes to Star Wars toys.
A sweet book by Sansweet!.......2004-12-02
A must own for fans of the collectibles spawned from the greatest space fantasy of all time. Sansweet takes you through the entire process that brought about the Star Wars experience and gives details about little known information surrounding the film's creation, collectibles and magicians who brought it to life. A nostalgic trip into the past to relive three great films accompanied by crisp, clear photos. Check it out.
A great history of Star Wars & Star Wars collectables.......2004-08-23
If I were to teach a class on the history Star Wars and Star Wars collectables, I would definitely use this as one of the textbooks. It is a very well written and interesting book. It contains lots of great pictures, including early drawings of movie characters made before the movies were ever created, as well as pictures of a variety of collectables (including both prototypes and finished products). Also contains lots of interesting factoids. This is not a price guide or a comprehensive guide to Star Wars collectables (so if that's what you are looking for, this is not the book for you). But if you want to learn about the Star Wars universe (literally from concept to screen to collectable), this will be a great addition to your library.
A Beautifully Written Book!.......2001-01-13
A beautifully written book -- Sansweet is the reigning expert on Star Wars (have all of his book, with the Scrapbook and Encyclopedia being my favorites). I just had some quibbles with some of the design elements in it but it's a wonderful edition to my library nevertheless.

Book Description
Eugene Narmour formulates a comprehensive theory of melodic syntax to explain cognitive relations between melodic tones at their most basic level. Expanding on the theories of Leonard B. Meyer, the author develops one parsimonious, scaled set of rules modeling implication and realization in all the primary parameters of music. Through an elaborate and original analytic symbology, he shows that a kind of "genetic code" governs the perception and cognition of melody. One is an automatic, "brute" system operating on stylistic primitives from the bottom up. The other constitutes a learned system of schemata impinging on style structures from the top down.
The theoretical constants Narmour uses are context-free and, therefore, applicable to all styles of melody. He places considerable emphasis on the listener's cognitive performance (that is, fundamental melodic perception as opposed to acquired musical competence). He concentrates almost exclusively on low-level, note-to-note relations. The result is a highly generalized theory useful in researching all manner of psychological and music-theoretic problems concerned with the analysis and cognition of melody.
"In this innovative, landmark book, a distinguished music theorist draws extensively from a variety of disciplines, in particular from cognitive psychology and music theory, to develop an elegant and persuasive framework for the understanding of melody. This book should be read by all scholars with a serious interest in music."—Diana Deutsch, Editor, Music Perception

Customer Reviews:
Very basic.......2006-10-09
I have been a big fan of dividend investing for years. Generally its not exciting but its dependable. Its often the only money you get to see in a share for a long time.
A plus is as the writer states is the market goes down the shares rarely drop that much as it reaches a point where people will buy it just for the dividend rate.
Having made this one observation, a few times in his book, you will find that if you know something about shares then there is little new or orginal here.
By the way the negative about dividend investing is what this writer does not tell you is if the company has a bad year and cuts its dividend, then the price can drop dramatically. So you still can get burnt badly.
A Must Have.......2005-10-08
If you're fairly new to investing and have gone beyond mutual funds and dipped your toes into a pool of stocks, you're probably like most new investors... you picked a few growth stocks because those are the stocks that are exciting and sexy. I always wondered what a "Value" stock was and why anyone except our elder citizens would want dividend stocks in boring industries like utilities.
This book will help open that world to you and give you some basic tools to start with in picking valuable, dividend producing stocks. It has actually made it exciting for me to search, pick, and buy those boring stocks!
I'm still young and new to investing, and I found this book, and a few other "All About" books, to be my favorite. They're technical enough without being too technical. And broad enough to give you a general view from which you can then dig deeper.
Best Points are Made Early.......2005-07-25
This recent entry in the "All About..." investment series covers a lot of territory, but many of its most useful points are made in the first few pages. Dividend paying stocks should be in your portfolio because their cash flow provides steady income with less price volatility in up and down markets. Dividends offer the possibility of positive returns during extended periods when there is little or no price appreciation in the equity markets. In fact, the authors believe that we are in for a "fairly long stretch" of disappointing returns based on their reading of bull and bear market cycle history. Retiring baby boomers looking to squeeze more income from their financial assets will want dividend producing stocks - another reason to own them ahead of their demographic buying wave. Recent tax law changes that include a low maximum 15% rate for most common stock dividends have also made these investments more attractive.
Much of what follows will be of interest to the Do It Yourself portfolio builder. The authors provide advice on analyzing a company's financial ratios to determine the sustainability of a company's dividend and their ability to raise it in the future. Investors are advised how to diversify their portfolio and suitable criteria for screening their holdings. Managing the portfolio with an automatic stop-loss sell discipline to preserve capital in declining markets is a much discussed and infrequently used strategy. Here it gets close attention. My sense of this book is that readers will pick and choose ideas and pieces of their strategy rather than try to follow their methodology step by step. Chapter 11 on DRIPS, Folios, and Mutual Funds and the final Chapter 12 can be skipped.

Compeling Arguments for Dividend Investing.......2005-01-08
Don Schreiber makes a strong and persuasive argument for why any savvy investor needs to give attention to dividend investing. This book showed me exactly how I can be a savvier investor. Now I have a better grasp of the tax consequences and impact of inflation on my investments and how stocks with excellent dividends can shield me. This is an excellent primer for investors at every level.
Book Description
The numbers are astonishing: of the 45 million Americans who invest in today’s stock market, only 5 million realize they can invest commission-free through dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) and direct stock purchase plans (DSPs). But as more and more investors clamor to cut costs and take control of their own portfolio decisions, this number is destined to rise—dramatically!
All About DRIPs and DSPs tells investors everything they need to know about where to find direct investment opportunities, and how to profit from their affordable compounding benefits. Author George Fisher—a pioneer of more than 30 years investing in DRIPs and DSPs—discusses:
* Today’s top 100 DRIP/DSP companies
* Advice for building a personalized, diversified mutual fund
* How to use PEG (price to earnings growth ratio) to identify superior long-term opportunities

All About Drips and DSPs.......2002-08-06
This is a very good book about buying stocks directly from the company. In this market why pay broker fees. A bunch of drunken monkeys throwing darts at the Wall Street Journal can do just as well at picking good stock as a broker and there's no fees. This is a great nuts and bolts book on buying drips. This is a good book for the beginning investor.
Investing for Joe Average.......2001-09-05
This book succeeds with its target audience on so many levels. It's written in a non-pretentious manner and covers all the bases very well. Due to the nature of this type of investing anyone can pick it up and be in the stock market in no time.
How much more timely could this book be? With the gut-wrenching gyrations in the stock market right now, the prudent, dollar-cost-averaging investor's style deserves a comprehensive illustration. This book provides that.
The company capsules are an excellent bonus. You don't see anything like that in the typical investing book.
The investor's friend, George Fisher.......2001-08-24
A very readable primer for beginner as well as experienced investor. This book is sure to give a good case of heartburn to "financial planners" and "life retirement consultants" who make their living on portfolio maintenance charges. Chapter by chapter, George Fisher uncomplicates the world of dividend reinvestment and direct stock purchase plans, and shows the reader that it's just not as hard as it seems to become one's own self-reliant investor. Section "Best Of The Best" which profiles 16 top companies is alone worth the price of the book.
Finally a Book That DRIPs With Meat!.......2001-08-17
Dividend reinvestment planning is the dirty little secret your broker and mutual fund salespeople don't want you to know about. Why? Because DRIPpers pay all the commissions to themselves.
To date few books about DRIPs have gone much beyond the mechanics of starting a plan and listing a number of companies that offer DRIPs. Most books describe a "one size fits all" approach to DRIPping. Yet anyone who DRIPs will tell you it is more complex than that.
All About DRIPs and DSPs breaks the mold. It could be seen as the first text book and artistic approach to dividend reinvestment planning. There is the usual material about how to begin a plan but it also begins to consider individual approaches to the process. Although individuals are responsible for choosing their own investments Mr. Fisher helps the reader develop the skills to make wise choices. He teaches an investor how to research companies through simplified analysis, looking at management and reading an annual report. He sifts these to find what is important and does it with humour. I particularly noted the sections on how to read between the lines when management speaks or how Harley Davidson has the kind of brand loyalty that causes people to tatoo the company logo to their bodies.
There are also sections on portfolio planning with DRIPs, how bonds can be DRIPped and lists of DRIP offering companies with outstanding historical performances.
DRIPs are for take charge individuals, with only small amounts of money to invest, who are tired of paying exhorbitant fees for questionable service. This book has provided me other strategies to consider than my own and broadened my approach. All About DRIPs and DSPs is for the self motivated individuals who wants to invest effectively and successfully.
This is the kind of book DRIPpers have been waiting for.
