Definitely not an "Object to be Destroyed".......2000-02-28

Man Ray was a superbly inventive photographer able to ignore the borders bewtween art & commercial photography. Originally published in 1934 as "Photographs by Man Ray 1920 Paris 1934," this collection is an excellent look at his photo work during his most adventurous years. The book is divided into five sections: general subjects; the female figure; women's faces; celebrity portraits; rayographs.

Man Ray's female figures are an offbeat take on the male gaze in which the processes are as sexy as the women. Along with his female faces, they demonstrate why Man Ray was much in demand by fashionable magazines. The "celebrity" portraits are of his fellow male artists & writers, with the exception of Gertrude Stein - who can hardly be glamorized anyway. The rayographs were created by placing objects directly on film, but the experimental nature of Man Ray's art is seen throughout this inexpensive book from Dover Publications. Picasso, Eluard, Breton, Tzara & Rrose Selavy a.k.a. Marcel Duchamp contributed texts. Highly recommended.

PROGRESSION SYSTEMS DONT WORK! thats what many card counters say and players also. THEYRE WRONG! ONLY ONE SYSTEM OF + PROGRESSION PLAYING WORKS AND THAT WAS DEVISED BY A NAVAL NUCLEUR ENGINEER NAMED DON DAHL! ive talked to don and his wife robin several times and found 2 geniuses! ok! HERES WHY IT WORKS! 1. its the only system that repeats the same bet twice! 2, the only system that still gives you a profit when you lose the raised bet.I know, you think its way too slow! Sorry but its not! Don has some clever "tricks" with splits, doubles, and blackjacks that can get you from 5buck bets to 100 bucks before you can see or believe it! and remember. all you need is 1 good streak and the pit bosses are standing behind you! I know the odds of winning 4 in a row are 11-1 against you but think of the number of times you start from square 1 with a 5 buck bet! Laughable.......2006-09-08

I spotted this nonsense book at a local bookstore and scanned through it for a good laugh.

Let me save the suspense: Dahl's strategy is basically this: increase your bet while you're winning, lower your bet while you're losing. Sounds great doesn't it? I bet his investment advice is "buy low, sell high".

This strategy is about the quickest way to lose your money short of using the Martingale system. Unless you believe in hot streaks and luck (in which case, just bring your rabbit's foot with you), this progression playing is a bunch of mumbo-jumbo.

Not only is this system bad for any casino game, it's actually worse for blackjack, because after you win a hand in blackjack, you're actually slightly *less* likely to win the next hand. If you want to understand why, go get a real blackjack book (I recommend 'Blackbelt in Blackjack' by Arnold Snyder). Yes, you can count cards with an 8-deck shoe, and professionals do it all the time.

Forget those reviews that say "I used this system and won $XXXX over a weekend". A weekend is nothing! Play for 1,000 hours and then report back. Don't forget to add the money you wasted on this book in your losses.

I GAVE IT A SHOT AND AM SURE GLAD I DID!.......2006-07-31

A friend of mine from work loaned me the book to read prior to gong to a company convention in Vegas. I knew the game fairly well was by on means an expert. I always played the lowest limit tables I could find and usually made the same bet every hand. On this trip, I actually came home with more money than I stepped on the plane with! Within a week of returning home I purchased my own copy of the book. I see that most readers feel the same way as I do about the book. After comparing my previous outcomes without progression to progression I have to say that anyone who badmouths progression has no idea what they are talking about.

THE BEST OF THE REST.......2006-06-25

This book has enabled me to go from a small time player to a high roller. My biggest bets prior to reading Progression Blackjack varied from 5-10 bucks. Recently I mad a $300.00 bet using Mr. Dahl's system. I no longer have to pay for my room or meals.....the casino's comp me without even having to ask! The book is worth it's weight in gold! If you ever read these reviews Mr. Dahl........ thankyou thankyou thankyou.

The Basics: Presented Well.......2006-05-01

Better know today as a conservative columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan also has a very strong pedigree as a political speech-writer for George H. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

In Simply Speaking she outlines very simply and coherently the basic rules of good speech writing and communication. As with most of the good books written on speech writing you are not likely to find major new insights. You will however find the key elements she addresses well illustrated with relevant speeches - many of which, by the way, she helped draft e.g. George H. Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican convention 1988 and Ronald Reagan's fortieth anniversary D-Day speech at Pointe du Hoc. Noonan goes through the speeches in detail, helping the reader to better appreciate the context and genesis for the respective speeches.

Noonan suggestions include:
A speech should never be more than twenty minutes.
Write the text out.
Humor is essential.
Sentences should be short and simple.

The book is a bit limited in that the author constantly returns to Reagan and his oratorical style but other speeches that Noonan quotes in a worthwhile book include Christopher Reeve's speech at the 1996 Democratic convention, John F Kennedy's Inaugural, Bill Clinton's Inaugural - which she pans and Mother Teresa's speech at the National Prayer Breakfast which reads well, but it was this amazing nun's presence and credibility which truly impacted the room.

I return to this book reasonably often because it is interesting and hits the key points for a speaker. But, the book could benefit from a good checklist and summary of key points. Noonan also shows her political colors too much in a book about speech writing. The reader doesn't need to know about her palpable disdain for the Clintons, a disdain which colors her judgment on the former President's communication ability which is often exceptional.

However, Simply Speaking is a good book for the budding speechwriter and speechmaker: a worthwhile and interesting refresher for the experienced speaker.

Good Grief!.......2005-11-18

I love reading Peggy Noonan's WSJ column; so let's get that out of the way right now. Peggy generally writes in a stream-of-consciousness form that I like. It captures my attention from the first sentence and holds me to the end. But not this book. After a page or two I noticed I was skipping ahead, looking for the bait and the hook. It's not there. That's Writing 101. She knows that! What I suspect is this: Her publisher contracted with her for a give-back linked to something else, and she wasnt interested in the project. It shows!

The book was cheaper than in the store, was shipped the same day as ordered, and arrived in new condition (it was new!) so I am well pleased.

Be a "Great Communicator".......2005-03-17

Written by former presidential speechwriter, Peggy Noonan, On Speaking Well will teach you how to write and deliver effective speeches. Although much can be learned from this book, I hesitate to recommend it to political neophytes, because Noonan's fallback theory on politics is that you should just "be yourself." Obviously I agree -- who wants to vote for a phony? But inexperienced readers might misconstrue this to mean they don't have to study how to win -- and that would be a shame for them. As Mrs. Noonan points out, even President Reagan made it a point to spend time learning how to be a "Great Communicator."

I actually tried to rely on this book for a presentation..........2004-01-29

I couldn't beleive how bad this book is. Not really a presentation on how to speak well, but full of recollections of her career-long speaking days. There was nothing useful in this book, except if you want to hear her reflections on talking her grades up with the professors in college back in the '60's. A complete waste of time and money.

Great for use in tutoring or in the classroom.......2003-02-13

We use this book in our pronunciation/intonation ESL classes (for advanced adult speakers) because it covers all the essential areas of sound production: pronunciation, intonation, word stress, rhythm, and linking. The examples are very helpful and clear. The exercises are well written and relevant for adult speakers.

The supplemental materials are also great, especially for people working with a tutor. There is a speech profile to be completed by the student and reviewed by an instructor or tutor, which can help students focus on their strengths and weaknesses. There is also a good review of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) which is very useful for students who are not familiar with this transcription system. There are also sections which give an overview of the vowel and consonant sounds of American English. It also has good suggestions for independent learning, which are great to give students who have finished a class and are wondering what to do next.

The book can be used with or without the tapes. You do need to have access to a native speaker to make use of many of the exercises. This could be your teacher or tutor, or even just an American friend. I don't see this a weakness, because anyone studying English needs regular native speaker feedback , but it is something to be aware of if you are studying on your own.

Overall, one of the best pronunciation books available.

Roasts are notoriously frightening. You assume that the roastee will enjoy being roasted but you're not always so sure. This book gives some great quips to start you out. I thougt most of them were on the tame side, a few were a little dated ( kind of reminded me of Johny Carson jokes - which would be fine but I'm not exactly Johny Carson). That could be because I'm a Gen-Xer. If you're trying to roast the CEO and not the CIO, this would probably help you more than it did me. One of the best features was the indexing which was very well done.
