It's hard to pinpoint the exact location of the center of the art world. It has resided most famously at one time in Paris and then New York, with other major cities making claim to the title at different times throughout the years. However fleeting this title may be, it still seems surprising that once upon a time Hartford, Connecticut, a town most known for its insurance companies, served as the unofficial gateway and capital of modern art in America. Beginning in the late 1920s, a young and somewhat rebellious Harvard graduate began a career at Hartford's Wadworth Atheneum that would make waves throughout the country and help shape the American artistic climate for years to come. Magician of the Modern: Chick Austin and the Transformation of the Arts in America is the biography of this creative museum director (and amateur actor) whose energy and romantic visions inspired so many. The story is one of a charmed life full of upper-class indulgences like transatlantic trips, short-lived college suspensions, lavish parties, and country houses.

Underneath the shiny surface was a real-life soap opera, from an overbearing mother and distant father to a blissful marriage that very slowly crumbled under the pressures of an ever-changing lifestyle--and through it all Austin remained steadfast in his commitment to art and theater. Not every endeavor was successful: a failed collaboration with arts patron Lincoln Kirstein to bring George Balanchine to Hartford was a crushing blow, and his mounting of a Picasso show brought much neighborly criticism. Yet, whatever the project, Austin was always way ahead of the cultural curve, and in Hartford that meant that much of the community was playing a constant game of catch-up. Austin's life is a complex story of travel, art, family, romance, and an ever important group of friends. --J.P. Cohen

Book Description

The story of Chick Austin is the story, in Virgil Thomson's words, of "a whole cultural movement in one man." Becoming director of Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum at the age of twenty-six, Austin immediately set about to introduce modern art to America and to transform this conservative insurance capital into a cultural mecca that would become the talk of the art world during the yeasty years between the two world wars.

The first in the United States to mount a major Picasso retrospective, Austin was soon acquiring works by Dalí, Mondrian, Miró, Balthus, Max Ernst, and Alexander Calder. In the museum's new theater (which he designed), he staged the premiere of the revolutionary Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson opera Four Saints in Three Acts (with an all-black cast). At Lincoln Kirstein's instigation, he brought Balanchine to America. And he embraced all the new art forms, making film, photography, architecture, and contemporary music part of the life of his museum. For his own family he built a Palladian villa (now a recently restored national historic landmark), filling it with the baroque and the Bauhaus and inviting all the locals in to see how it felt to be modern.

Austin's instinct for quality proved infallible. Whether acquiring a matchless Caravaggio or a startling Dalí, he balanced the old masters with the modern. Mounting provocative shows that linked the past to the present, he created dramatic installations--and he threw himself into everything, hanging fabrics, creating backdrops, stitching up costumes. He loved to teach, to paint, to act, to give lavish costume balls, and to dazzle audiences of all ages with his performances as a magician, the Great Osram.

Brilliant at using his magician's sleight of hand, he could manipulate his conservative trustees to get what he wanted--but only up to a point. One more purchase of an incomprehensible abstract canvas, one outrageous party too many, one more shocking theatrical role, eventually led to a crisis. Never one to be idle for long, Austin left Hartford and took on a new challenge--to make an artistic triumph of the pink-and-white palace in Sarasota, Florida, known as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, which housed the circus king's moldering but magnificent collection.
Here is the colorful life of Chick Austin, and as we relish his audacious career--the risks he took, the successes he enjoyed along with the inevitable setbacks--we understand what a far-reaching influence he had on the way Americans look at and think about art. Not only a brilliant portrait of an extraordinary man, this wonderfully American story gives us a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the art world as it was then--and in many ways still is today.

4 out of 5 stars The Orson Welles of Museum Directors.........2003-06-25

Charming and innovative are probably the best words to describe Chick Austin, the subject of this biography. It is rare that a mere museum director is the subject of a biography, particularly one as entertaining as this one, but Chick Austin was not the average museum director.

He was schooled early on in European culture by his geneologically ambitious mother, who seemed to spend a great deal of her later years seeking family links, often specious, to European Royalty. He also developed an interest in magic which stayed with him for the majority of his life.

Chick Austin went from indifferent Harvard Student to the director of the Wadsworth Athenium in Hartford in something like 5 years. He brought a great deal of vigor to this, staging the first Baroque (when this art period was unpopular), Picasso, and Dali shows. He also staged Gertrude Stein's opera, Four Saints in Three Acts." All of this was a bit too much for dear old Hartford, who were alternately charmed and shocked by their young art director. Previously the museum had been noted for its collection of colonial furniture, after such an abrupt change it is not too difficult to imagine why. In the process, Austin managed to acquire a large number of Old Masters and Modern works. One of the five Caravaggios in the United States was bought for the museum by Austin toward the end of his tenure.

Austin's other great achievement was the Ringling Museum in Florida. The former Circus tycoon had amassed a large collection of Baroque Art in Florida. Austin not only managed to save many of the paintings from exposure to the elements, but add significantly to the hopdings of the museum by acquiring an 18th century Italian theatre.

Predictably, Austin's efforts brought him into conflict with a variety of old fuddie duddies, from trustees, state legislatures and hack journalists. The unique artistic vision of these cretins is unlikely to be celebrated anytime soon.

While Hartford and the steate of Florida haved physical evidence of Austin's efforts, the entire museum going public has cause to likewise be grateful. With Chick Austin's museums became far less stuffy places,at least in the right hands.

This book is written by the director of the Austin House in Hartford and as such it is likely to the be the most authoritative for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting reading.......2002-01-06

Chick Austin is a national treasure and what he did for the art scene is truly remarkable. I enjoyed the entire book and reading about how he developed his collection. I am not much of an art history buff and picked this book up during the holidays while visiting my family...I was hooked from the beginning. I am glad I read this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography - Highly Recommended.......2001-01-09

The author weaves a very interesting and well-organized tale about a fascinating person and an exciting time to be involved in the art world in the United States. Although the substantial footnote section validates the author's detailed and thorough research, I never felt as if the text itself were bogged down with unnecessary or uninteresting detail. I suspect that some readers will note similarities between many of the struggles that Chick Austin faced and similar situations in the contemporary art scene today. This is an excellent book with a great story - I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Long-awaited Brilliant Biography.......2001-01-05

A must-read for anyone interested in the arts in America. This splendid biography of Chick Austin is a landmark, defining what it means to be modern. The book brilliantly describes Austin's ground-breaking career and fascinating life: helping bring Balanchine to America, building the country's first modernist museum building, scandalizing Hartford, and bringing the magical Asolo theatre to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. The biography will appeal greatly to those interested in American museums, theatre, music, the Italian Baroque, the 1920's period, the Bauhaus style, as well as surrealism, cubism, and all aspects of the modern. Written with great taste and insight; highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Guide.......2006-03-25

I found this to be a very good guide on the subject of lighting and exposure for location photography. The sections on lighting were certainly the highlight of this book. The author goes into great detail to explain the concepts of light modification and subtracting light which is rarely discussed in other books. The photos are well done and lit properly. My only negative was that some of the poses looked a little forced, which is why I rated the book 4 stars and not 5. Overall, it is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Discussions on Metering.......2005-11-21

The full name of this book is: 'Lighting and Exposure Techniques for Outdoor and Location Portrait Photography'. Whew, big title for a book.

I like this book... mostly it stays on target and provides useful, replicable information.

What I like about this book:

1) Only the smallest amount of filler;
2) Stunning images. I WANT to do portraits like JJ Allen.
3) Good diagrams
4) One of the better discussions on metering that you're likely to ever read. A good thing too, knowing proper metering techniques is vital for outdoor photography.
5) Delivers the kinds of pearls of wisdom that we buy these books for. Consider: "When using mismatched light sources, always use the light that casts shadows with the sharpest edge as your main light source."

What I don't like about this book:

Not a lot, really. Mr. Allen is somewhat of a medium format bigot, with a rather condescending chapter on what to do if you must use 35mm... You CAN still make acceptable images!

Still, everyone's entitled to their opinion and the tips and techniques that you'll pick up in this book makes it easy to overlook its' very few warts.

Good stuff, if you shoot much outside, you'll want this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great photos and helpful text.......2004-03-29

The book is helpful and directive with good explanations on how to set up on-location lighting, mostly using natural light. It is beneficial to me, however, it deals primarily with medium format, non-automatic, cameras and equipment; only one chapter deals with 35mm and autofocus cameras. Even though the book was written in 2003 the author never mentions digital photography, never even touches on it. That is a drawback. If you are using digital, this book may not be good for you. The information about use of lighting, diffusers, and reflectors is still a great help. I do recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Logical Approach For Better Portrait Photography.......2003-08-03

Most portait photography books teach by making you a "clone" of the author. Mr. Allen's aproach to portraits (in both of his books) is not that way. He teaches you how to think about your own style of portraiture and then how to test your technical approach in a step by step method, so as they say, "you can get it on the film". If you follow his logic, there is no way you cannot end up a better photographer.

I never liked Nancy as a kid. It was too dumb and corny. Nonetheless, I always read it. Why did I read it? I didn't know. But now I do--it was Nancy's unique combination of precise drawing style and dumbass sight gags. "Bums, Beatnicks, and Hippies, Artists and Con Artists" has these qualities in spades. After reading this volume, one will conclude that all hippies carry acoustic guitars and wear Roman sandles, all artists have a goatee and wear a beret, and bums sport a uniform whisker stubble on their chin and a two-bit cigar in their mouth. (And, brother, are these hobos funny. I laughed for a week.)

Huzzah for Ernie Bushmiller! He's created a strip more bizarre than anything found in a punk fanzine or scrawled on a bathroom wall

    Book Description

With a New Preface by the Author

"None of us thought we were making anything but entertainment for the moment. Only Ernst Lubitsch knew we were making art."--John Ford

When movie lovers speak of the "Lubitsch touch," they refer to a singular sense of style and taste, humor and humanity, that suffused the films of one of Hollywood's greatest directors. In this first ever full-length biography of Ernst Lubitsch, Scott Eyman takes readers behind the scenes of such classic films as Trouble in Paradise (1932), The Merry Widow (1934), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938), Ninotchka (1939), The Shop around the Corner (1940), To Be or Not to Be (1942), and Heaven Can Wait (1943), which together constitute one of the most important and influential bodies of work in Hollywood. Eyman examines both the films Lubitsch crafted and the life he lived--his great successes and his overwhelming anxieties--to create an indelible portrait of Hollywood's Golden Age and one of its most respected artists.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A very good biography !.......2001-05-11

This biography of the geat Ernst LUBITSCH is really better than the overrated book "THE LUBITSCH TOUCH" by WEINBERG. It is an alive book by a writer who really admire the director and the man. It also gives some good reviews and information about Lubitsch's geat films. My only complain is that the autor doesn't really develop the German period (which is still underrated and considered as "vulgar" - "thanks" to the famous critic Lotte EISNER), like all the books about Lubitsch, it focuses on the masterpierces of the 30's and the 40's (the most known period and the best of course). But buy it, if you want to know more about LUBITSCH/the man (and prefer this book to Weinberg's one). About LUBITSCH/the director, buy the excellent book by S. RAPHAELSON "3 screen comedies" (if you can find it !) and J. HARVEY's "American comedies : from Lubitsch to Sturges".

          Book Description

French cult figure, Serge Gainsbourg is forever synonymous with 'Je T'Aime--Moi Non Plus' on which he and Jane Birkin simulated the sounds of erotic congress. But this 1969 Number One was a mere sideshow to an eye-stretching career in which he bestrode Gaelic culture as a singing composer, novelist, film director and actor.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars I love you...Neither do I.......2002-02-24

Man,Alan Clayson really dislikes Serge Gainsbourg,I never read a book where an author puts his subject so low, what's worst he does it in a style that's so hard to follow it's almost a dare to finish this book,(makes one wonder if it's written in english),he had a lot of mistakes also, and he doesn't interviewed nobody close to Gainsbourg in real life,it seems all this books offers comes from his resaerchs and personal opinions, what's odd if why he wrote the book if he feels so bad about him.A bad book poorly written.

          1 out of 5 stars Purple Poseur.......2001-07-18

Like many reviews have already cited, it's a shame this is the only biography of Gainsbourg in English. This self-appointed "biographer", Alan Clayson manages to make one hell of an interesting life, unspeakably dull. Clayson simply cannot write.

          For example:

"Until showtime, Serge might tinker secretively on a battered piano in a backstage alcove, but he couldn't stop himself being dragged into the behind the scenes intrigues and jealousies that would come to a head in 'prima donna' tantrums you could hear in the galleries and squabbles that ricocheted like shrapnel between any given combination of the principals for all the wonderful-to-be-here vaporings and scripted grinning unzipped as soon as they got in front of the footlights".

          Less is more, pal.

If this sort of self-indulgent "purple prose" turns you on, by all means get the book. I couldn't believe what I was reading and it's apalling that Clayson's publishers put this stuff in print for unsuspecting Gainsbourg fans.

Besides being horribly written, Clayson is utterly arrogant and contemptable in tone. He's not only dismissive of the French music scene but apparently on his subject as well. I mean what's the point of writing the book in the first place?

What's worse is the guy doesn't even have his facts straight.

For all practical purposes, Clayson skips over one of the most formative events in his subject's character. For all the bile and venom Gainsborg poured into his ROCK AROUND THE BUNKER album, all we get from Clayson is a seemingly casual mention of Serge being a Jewish teenager during occupied France. No details or events are supplied on what was undoubtedly a harrowing time in Gainsbourg's life. The best we get is a caption under a photograph reading, "Lucien was concealed in a woodshed during a Gestapo descent on his secondary school".

In short, this is not only a clumsy, inept attempt at biography, it's an unbearable exercise in self-indulgence on the part of the writer. Pass it by and wait for a better one. Don't let this piece of idiocy be your introduction to Gainsbourg's outrageously uncompromising talent.

          1 out of 5 stars Clayson's contempt.......2001-04-15

It's a pity that this turgid tome is the only Gainsbourg bio in English, but that will be changing soon, with a new one due in 2002 (and tantalizingly previewed in a recent issue of MOJO). Once it appears, Clayson's book can slink into the obscurity it deserves. I'm a major Gainsbourg fan, but am not averse to a warts-and-all portrait: would that Clayson gave us that much. No, all we get here is uninformed contempt for the man's music and the electrifying French popular culture from whence it sprang. He can't be bothered to put Gainsbourg in his context, and thus major contemporaneous French movements such as the cinema's nouvelle vague are given but cursory glances (and in the few sentences it is accorded, Clayson manages to embarrassingly mispell the names of both Chabrol and Truffaut - Chabril and Truffant, indeed)!

One has to wonder how much familiarity Clayson actually has with Gainsbourg's music: he admits to finding the CONFIDENTIEL album (spare songs delivered by one voice, one guitar, and one bass) indistinguishable from the heavily orchestrated material that immediately precedes it.

The discography at the back is loaded with gaffes that betray a shocking lack of familiarity with the music, if not total indifference: early tracks such as "La javanaise" and "L'eau a la bouche" are cited as c. 1968 duets with Brigitte Bardot when in fact they were recorded and released 6+ years before, by Serge alone, when Gainsbourg, by Clayson's own timeline, had not even MET Bardot! It's easy to see how this mistake was made: the songs were included to fill out a collection of Gainsbourg/Bardot collaborations in 1968, but less easy to understand how anyone who had devoted time and research to an artist's career could miss that. These are MAJOR songs in the Gainsbourg oeuvre. Just as telling is Clayson's footnote to the song "Je t'aime... moi non plus": "also known as 'Le chanson de SLOGAN'". No it's not. They are two COMPLETELY different songs, something anyone who had done the acceptable minimum of research would know.

If you want to read a biography that provides you with no context, treats its subject's creativity and national culture with utter contempt, and makes glaring errors of the kind cited above, VIEW FROM THE EXTERIOR is the book for you. If not, hold on, for help is on the way.

          1 out of 5 stars View from Clayson's Ego!.......2001-01-11

I really think that someone as fascinating a character as Serge Gainsbourg desrves a more eloquently written bio. As you the consumer deserves to know that unless you like reading fluffy jargon set out to impress those who knew Serge personally, this is not the bio for you. Here is an example:"Spontaneous salvos of applause would be provoked by specific couplets emoted either w/out embroidery-so as not to jar their elegance-or extemporised like a jazz vocalist after he got the knack of slipping comfortably from suppressed lust through lazy insinuation to intimate anguish, sometimes mingling humor and gloom in the same line." If this is how you enjoy reading and LEARNING about someone then buy, buy, buy, but if not beware because this example is tame! I would however, suggest checking out the other Serge book on Amazon, with reliable reviews from such distinguished musicians as John Zorn! I have never given the lowest rating before, but this one truely warranted it. Sorry Al!

          2 out of 5 stars What a letdown!.......2000-02-19

If you're reading this you probably already agree that the subject matter is fascinating. Unfortunately this book earned its stars from me for subject matter alone. The writing is horrible. The information is sketchy. The ONLY reason to buy this book is that it is the only Gainsbourg bio in English.

            Book Description

Serge Gainsbourg was famous — or infamous — for his 1969 hit Je T'Aime . . . Moi Non Plus, in which he and Jane Birkin simulated the sounds of sex. The song's notoriety overshadowed an often brilliant — and wildly controversial — career as a composer, novelist, director, and actor. A shameless and charming self-promoter, Gainsbourg rose from humble beginnings to become the lover of such icons as Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot. He continued scandalizing polite society until his death in 1991; among his many infamies are a scandalous reggae arrangement of La Marseillaise and songs celebrating masturbation, incest, Nazism, and oral sex.

3 out of 5 stars Decent reference-guide against sharp, memorized variations........2003-12-09

I normally do not like openings manuals, but if you must have one, this is a better choice than MCO. In fact, it is a cross between MCO and a typical Schiller openings encyclopedia. It has very convenient, full-page tables of suggested moves for each opening discussed, and the discussions include ideas, variations, and sample games.

The advice is aimed at club players, which is something I like very much, as opposed to NCO (or even MCO) which contains best lines for masters.

The openings here are not all off-the-wall gambits, although many of those are included. Fairly standard and common open games are here too -- the Spanish Exchange, for example. This is really a book for combatting offbeat LINES of various openings. If your opponent has memorized some sharp lines which could give you trouble, you will have to memorize your responses.

The aim of this book is to keep the memorization to a minimum. Ordinarily, normal moves are sufficient. This book is your defense against a "weaker" opponent who is attempting to win points simply by memorizing.

The best thing about the book is the use of ! and ? in the tables. They actually include some common blunders and refutations, unlike most such tables which list only "best" play. The idea is to suggest lines which you can play with reasonable confidence as a club player, and to point out the likely pitfalls for both sides, in a very easy-to-use format.

This is not a repertoire book, and it is not a way to learn to play open games. It is strictly a quick-reference for playing against those annoying club-level opponents who are determined to concentrate on surprises in the opening rather than on improving their own games.

If this were on CD (in Chessbase or PGN) instead of in a book, I would give it 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on principle-centered leadership..........2007-02-24

I am a fan of Zig Ziglar and I think he exemplifies a model of doing business founded on character and business ethics. He has been very successful himself applying these ideas and true to himself along the way.

This book is basically about how to be a good example and inspire others by living consistent to your values while applying timeless principles to leadership. Like sports, it is often doing the fundamentals really well that leads to tremendous success. For example, look at Tiger Woods. He always returns to improving and grooving the fundamentals.

What makes this book particularly worthwhile is the quality of the story telling, analogies and examples. This helps the principles to land. While this book is simple and straightforward, it's not necessarily simple to apply especially when you get in a difficult situation that tempts you to violate your own principles.

I have been fairly successful in business and worked for more than one Fortune 100 company in different careers. I also had the good fortune of working in Silicon Valley for such companies as Oracle, PeopleSoft and VMware in a variety of management roles. I have tested these ideas in practice and as a result built winning teams. Any of the books I have bought by Zig Ziglar have paid for themselves many times over. I hope you have the same experience.
