Book Description
In Materializing New Media, Anna Munster offers an alternative aesthetic genealogy for digital culture. Eschewing the prevailing Cartesian aesthetic that aligns the digital with the disembodied, the formless, and the placeless, Munster seeks to "materialize" digital culture by demonstrating that its aesthetics have reconfigured bodily experience and reconceived materiality.
Her topics range from artistic experiments in body-computer interfaces to the impact that corporeal interaction and geopolitical circumstances have on producing new media art and culture. She argues that new media, materiality, perception, and artistic practices now mutually constitute "information aesthetics." Information aesthetics is concerned with new modes of sensory engagement in which distributed spaces and temporal variation play crucial roles. In analyzing the experiments that new media art performs with the materiality of space and time, Munster demonstrates how new media has likewise changed our bodies and those of others in global information culture.
Materializing New Media calls for a re-examination of the roles of both body and affect in their relation to the virtual and to abstract codes of information. It offers a nonlinear approach to aesthetics and art history based on a concept of "folding" that can discern certain kinds of proximities and continuations across distances in time (in particular between the Baroque and the digital). Finally, it analyzes digital culture through a logic of the differential rather than of the binary. This allows the author to overcome a habit of futurism, which until now has plagued analyses of new media art and culture. Technology is now not seen as surpassing the human body but continually reconfiguring it and constitutive of it.

Dazzling.......2007-04-06
This book is a virtuoso performance in its feminist exploration of the concerns of new media and the concept of embodiment.

The Business of Studio Photography: How to Start and Run a Successful Photography Studio

Book Description
From bringing in new clients to delivering the final proofs, this book covers all aspects of the highly competitive business of high school portrait photography. Studio owners will learn how to create interest in their product by drawing clients to their studio through appropriate advertising that both targets teenagers and appeals to their parents. Ideas for postcards, CD-ROM business cards, T-shirts, and other materials to help boost a studio's visibility are detailed. Once photographers have learned how to create interest in their product, they will learn how to create an attractive environment in their studio-what styles and types of images should be on display, and how to discuss make-or-break issues such as pricing. Technical advice is also provided on indoor studio- and window-lighting setups, outdoor photography, lighting, sets, exposure, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Parts of this Book are Good, but.......2006-05-12
Parts of this book are good, but a lot of this is just outdated. I do not know any senior photographers that are still using film. The website info is not current nor is much of the information about TV and radio advertising.
The sections on understanding the senior and the booking of the session are well done. Much of the marketing ideas are also very good.
The section on indoor backgrounds and sets is a little weak, but the outdoor set designs and budgeting is great.
I agree with many of the other people that have left reviews that these photos look very old. I can't imagine the author still shoots this way today.
Good Beginner Guide.......2006-05-08
I found this book to be a good beginner guide to High School Senior photography. The author walks you through all of the elements to running a successful senior business. I do wish the author had gone into more depth regarding the marketing and the results. Blanket statements about knocking out the competition do not provide the quantitative kind of information that would be helpful. Tell me that when you sent out this particular mailer or another that you saw a 20% growth in bookings. Tangible info would be very helpful.
The bookj is really lacking in the area of digital imaging. I realize the book is a few years old, but some of the photos look like they were taken in the 80's.
I got enough valuable information to make the book easily worth the price I paid. If you are just starting out, this book will help you.
Could Use An Update.......2006-04-20
This is a pretty good book, but it really needs to be updated for today's photographer. The images in this book seem like they were old when the book came out. The photography seems like it is from the 1990's and so much has changed since then.
The marketing and sales info is still valid today. There are a lot of valuable ideas throughout the book
Overall, the photos would get 1 star and the marketing 5 stars, so I ended up with a 3 star rating.
Solid marketing Ideas.......2006-03-10
The author provides several good, solid marketing ideas that can be a benefit for any senior portrait photography studio. The book is worth the investment.
Great Place To Start.......2005-09-29
If you are an experienced studio photographer, then this or any
other book is probably not for you. If you are just beginning
or getting into Senior Portrait Photography - this book is a
great place to start. Ellie Vayo covers all aspects of Senior
Portrait Photography and gives great advice on the individual
approach to each client.

Book Description
Heretics of Tarantia is a Conan Roleplaying Game scenario of a different breed. Rather than hunting through a plague-ridden jungle in search of a city so old it has been forgotten or tracking a corrupt sorcerer to his demon-haunted layer, Heretics of Tarantia is a story of intrigue, backstabbing, politicking, and murder in that most princely of cities, Tarantia, capital of Aquilonia, the Flower of the West. Heretics of Tarantia is intended for a group of four to six Player Characters of approximately fifth to seventh level. Since much of it relies on the Player Characters' problem-solving abilities, it can easily be adjusted to accommodate groups of higher or lower character levels.
Customer Reviews:
BRING YOUR THIEVES!.......2006-03-22
Heretics of Tarantia is rather unique among RPG modules in that the hack-n-slash elements are downplayed in favor of stealth, intrigue, and diplomacy skills while not sacrificing any gaming enjoyment. Tarantia is the capitol of Aquilonia and called "The City of Wonders". The module is set during the time of Conan's reign as King of Aquilionia however business of the kingdom finds him away from his throne as his councilor and chancellor Publius is left in charge. The module's preface explains that until the time of Conan, only the worship of the god Mitra was permitted in the city and all other religions were banned. Conan changed this to allow freedom of religion (since he himself called upon Crom). This did not sit well with the priests of Mitra who use the King's absence to strike a blow against the other upstart cults, specifically the Cult of Asura.
Led by Constantus, Priest of Mitra and leader of the Brotherhood of the Bull, they have made dark alliances with wealthy nobleman as well as Stygians to rid Tarantia of all worship of Asura. The adventure is designed for 4 - 6 players from 5th to 7th level of experience. The players will find themselves caught up in this deadly game of conspiracies and intrigue when they come upon a dying priest of Mitra who warns them about the Brotherhood.
Players in this module will have to use their wits and charisma as much, if not more than their sword arms as they will eventually make contact with Publius and reveal what they've found as he will request (strongly!) the players aid in helping to find out further information about who is behind the plot and then stopping them. The players will need to gather information, perform interrogations, and use other methods of stealth to achieve their goals. But it's not all stealth...there will be a fair dose of battle as well as the players explore both the city and its underbelly to win the day.
A different type of adventure, but fun; the writers know Conan's world and its history and have done a wonderful job of capturing the look and feel of the savage Hyborian age. Another great Conan product from Mongoose!

If you're a devoted fan of The Larry Sanders Show--the HBO program that wrapped up its award-filled run in May 1998--you've already got a copy. However, it was nice to find that this book, written by Sanders's comic alter ego Garry Shandling (assisted by the über-ghostwriter David Rensin), stands on its own as an ironic, tongue-deeply-in-cheek look at talk-showdom. Here are a few samples:
Here is a photo of Jennie Garth from Beverly Hill 90210. I had sex with her a dozen times, but she never reciprocated. Her excuse was, "I like men."
Unbeknownst to most everyone except those of you who regularly read those trashy tabloids--and that would be all of you--I have suffered through many personal tragedies: an unhappy and abusive childhood, two divorces, many empty love affairs, a venereal disease that nearly took my right leg, feuds, substance dependencies, a palimony suit from my mother, who said, "You live with me for twenty years and move out just like that? This will cost you," and worst of all, the horror of being rear-ended backstage by one of Siegfried and Roy's big white leopards.
Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is an enjoyable tour through stardom with a truly sleazy Hollywood character. Anybody who relishes celebrity bios will get the joke and engage in delicious snickers of recognition. Larry Sanders is dead, long live Larry Sanders! --Michael Gerber
Book Description
With the wit and charm and wit that have made him one of America's most beloved, and now most sorely missed, television personalities, Larry Sanders tells here the story behind the man -- Larry -- from his emotionally barren beginnings in Mound, Minnesota, to his ten-year run as the man millions went to bed with every night. (He had a very big bed.) Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is a Hollywood autobiography like no other because it reveals all -- the loves and losses, the pain and joy, the shrinks and doctors -- and it is uproariously funny. Larry Sanders has written a book that will have the same ten-year run that his show did.
Larry Sanders is no ordinary man, and this book will show America and the world how very different he is. Fueled by an enormous need to be loved and gifted with a talent beyond even his own, Sanders has risen to the top of his field -- and dropped -- while retaining all of his dignity and modesty. As he says on the first page of his story, "I'm famous. Actually, I'm very, very, very famous." Sanders's story is laced with the names (and some of the faces) of the thousands of celebrities who have sought his attention for a decade -- and Sanders tells the world what he thinks of all of them, even if it hurts his own feelings.
Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is a Hollywood tell-all that will forever change the nature of this kind of book. While Geraldo Rivera used his sexual exploits to shamelessly promote his book, Sanders uses his conquests of thousands of women to illustrate his compassion and grace. "If it sells, it sells," Sanders says. "There was never a hidden agenda." While Roseanne used her book to promote her many personalities, Sanders's book shows how a straight-shooter can not only survive but thrive in Hollywood. Most of all, Sanders, in truthfully disclosing all aspects of his life and those of people he has never met, hopes to heal and entertain. Sanders has written a wonderfully hilarious book that will make some of his fans wish he were back.
Customer Reviews:
Tickle My Funny Bone.......2003-03-31
This is not the best of autobiographies. But nevertheless it was a very funny book. The story about how his mother slept with Redd Foxx and Tito Jackson was a hoot. He's no Ernest Hemmingway but if want to read a very funny book buy it.
A few laughs and mercifully its over quickly.......2003-03-12
This is a strange genre - an autobiography of a fictional character. Add to this that the fictional character is Larry Sanders, a paranoid, insecure, and egotistical host of a late night talk show! Fortunately, the large print face, copious white space and 82 pages of pictures contribute to making this a quick read. The humor would be the sad type of laughing at some obnoxious, insensitive bore, except we are saved from feeling bad about this by the fact that the object of the joke is fictional. This is supposed to make laughing at him acceptable. If you can get into the premise there are plenty of funny jokes.
Very Funny.......2001-10-27
It had me laughing and chuckling out loud on the train, on my way, to and from work for a few days. When I got to the last page, I wished there was more.
Confessions Of a Late Night Talk Show Host: A Book's Book.......2001-10-05
I thought Larry Sanders "Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host" was just a terrific work. I've read a number of books and neither of them were even close to being as good as this one. Reading Larry's life story was like getting to know him all over again and it was very exciting to learn that Larry has so much in common with the common man. It's so easy to relate to Larry on so many different levels and some that aren't level at all. For instance, Larry reveals that he's slept with a number of different women...
Anyone who fails to grasp the humor in this book, should take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves this question, "Are you looking at me?" That's the thing about Larry Sanders, he can look in the mirror without having to ask that question. In fact, he doesn't even have to look in a mirror to not ask that question. Some people will never understand that and I'll never understand that.
I just hope in this politically correct atmosphere that this book will be taken at face value. In Larry Sanders case, it's worth at least half that amount and I'm proud to stick two thumbs up in approval and delight.
Shame on you Mr Shandling.......2001-09-30
Do NOT waste money on this bad, bad book. I did and it is the most dissapointing book I have ever read. Very poor effort indeed.

"This book offers a history of Hong Kong cinema in the postwar period. It is an extraordinary history of survival and success against the odds, a history which is inseparably bound up with Hong Kong's economic miracle." Here is the first book to treat the Hong Kong film industry with real seriousness, demonstrating how it reflected the changes in the city's administration and growth. Author Stephen Teo convincingly debunks the commonplace notion that Hong Kong consistently produced movies of "dubious aesthetic quality"; he uncovers the remarkable range and versatility of the city's cinema. Teo focuses on international action stars such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and directors like John Woo, Ringo Lam, and Tsui Hark, while also covering the industry's forays into melodrama, horror, comedy, social realism, the crime film, and other genres. His descriptions of the industry's ethics are very powerful, even when he covers action movies: "More than any other cinema, the Hong Kong cinema takes to heart the adage that old warriors never die: they fade away and reappear, some taking the call to arms literally by using their fists as kung fu warriors. Others fence their way to a last moment of glory as expert swordsmen and women before the sword is sheathed and the scabbard hung up." --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
This is the first full-length, English-language study of one of the world's most exciting and innovative cinemas. Covering a period from 1909 to the "end of Hong Kong Cinema" in the present day, this unique book is packed with information about the films, the studios, the personalities, and the contexts that have shaped a cinema famous for its energy and style.
Hong Kong Cinema enhances our understanding and enjoyment of the films of such legendary figures as King Hu, Bruce Lee, and Jackie Chan, moving up to date with the work of John Woo and the directors of the various "New Waves."
Customer Reviews:
Best book on the subject that I've read.......2005-01-08
If you're looking for true insight into the development of Hong Kong cinema, be sure to check out this informative yet entertaining work. While some other books on HK cinema are all flash and recommend the same few titles over and over, this book looks far beyond the surface. I found myself reaching to re-read sections over and over after viewing different films, wanting to refresh my memory on the stories behing their directors, stars, and genres as a whole.
Definitely recommended for those seriously interested in improving their appreciation of Hong Kong cinema.
no other book like this in english.......1999-08-23
While there have been tons of books on HK cinema, they mostly touch on the popular movies, directors and stars. You hear of John Woo, Jackie Chan, Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam etc etc. But there are next to none, if any, on the history of HK cinema in English. This book is an essential read if one wants to know more about the political and cultural events that shaped HK cinema. Thankfully it isn't only just essential and informative, it also manages to be enjoyable.

Book Description
John Emms reveals the secrets of how to maximize potential and improve results in competitive play. Drawing upon years of his own experience, Emms tackles the all-important practical aspects of chess playing: studying ones own strengths and weaknesses, and those of prospective opponents; concentration and manner at the chessboard; handling time trouble; tackling cheats; playing for a win or a draw; saving difficult positions; avoiding silly mistakes; building an opening repertoire; using chess computers and software; choosing the right tournaments and much more besides.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and valuable even if the title is hype.......2007-08-15
John Emms is an excellent chess writer; I have many of his books. He does not tend toward the spectacular or hyperbolic (he's not Eric Schiller, for instance), or even the overly exciting. So I suspect he did not choose this extravagant book title.
I would hardly call this a survival guide. Instead, I would call it an improvement guide (making the second part of the title at least mostly correct, although "now" is quite soon). Mr. Emms presents some basic but easily overlooked principles ("check every move" is one) and illustrates them with games and examples, often from his own play. He is up-front about his own losses and how he drew lessons from them, and this is perhaps the best of the book. It's something we can all relate to and begin to do on our own, with much beneficial effect.
There's a lot here about staying focused in the heat of the battle and especially about recovering focus and concentration after making an error, something most of us mortals do more than we might like in tournament games. There are further chapters about preparation, but these come into play, I think, when we have first learned the more basic lessons of the earlier chapters.
I'm about to play in a 3-day event. Having just read this book, will my results improve "now"? We shall see. But I do intend to take some of those principles ("check every move") as a mantra, and I suspect that will be a good thing. I can certainly recommend this book. It's interesting, engaging, and ultimately, I think, it's useful.

Book Description
A Passion For Excellence is the single most existing, inspiring, career-transforming book ever published for people who want to get ahead. It takes you behind, the scenes in some of the most successful organizations and analyzes what makes them distinctive. Here are real people, real companies, real numbers. Here is what you need to know about the crucial elements of success: constant innovation, staying in touch with customers, encouraging the contributions of everyone in the company, and maintaining the integrity that is basic to leadership. Here are the secrets of building excellence.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent! Easy and straightforward........2007-05-12
It's a book to keep for future reference. I've used it many times with colleagues and subordinates. Its examples are fantastic, it's written in a direct and easy way. All managers should read it to grasp hints on how to manage people and achieve the aimed results. Worth every penny spent on it. I've also read 'Thriving on Chaos' from the same author. Some chapters overlap, but it is an even deeper book on the subject matter. 'A Passion for Excellence' is written in a passionate way. You'll never forget it while working in management.
A Great Read.......2006-06-11
Having read and enjoyed "In Search for Excellence", I decided to also read "A Passion for Excellence". This book proposes that it is unnecessary to go through the traditional data-based doctrine of management. Instead the book advocates championing an innovative, customer and people oriented spirit. The authors give hundreds of actual, real-world examples, focusing on the key areas of competence that add up to excellence, offering scores of anecdotes and practical insights to help all business people on their road to leadership, success, and more importantly, excellence.
The book provides imaginative management practices and techniques that should help organization stay competitive and profitable. It is instructive and inspirational with useful reminders to managers. It is an important handbook to a brave, new way to manage people and companies.
A Passion for Excellence examines some of the most successful organizations and offers a thoughtful analysis of what makes them distinctive. Readers should benefit from gaining an insight about the critical elements of success namely constant innovation, staying in touch with customers, encouraging the contributions of everyone in the company, and maintaining the integrity that is basic to leadership.
SUPERB CASE HISTORIES OF WHAT PRACTICAL PASSION CAN DO.......1999-02-05
Many people have written that they like Tom Peters, but do not think that he has much to say that is new or different. Others criticize Peters for being changeable in his views. What these people miss is that Tom Peters is passionate about using passion for customers, employees, and everyone else to create great results for all of us. By awakening our passion, we will do more, we will try more, and we will succeed more often. In many ways, this book is much more important than IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE. A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE clearly shows that passionate leadership about the right things sets a good example and the right tone for the organization. This book is helpful in that each section is meant to be read as a stand-alone, so you can go to the places that you did not feel very passionate about when you read IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE and get some good reinforcement about the value of passion in that area. A good companion piece if you need more passion and self-direction is Tony Robbins' AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN.
A must read.......1997-12-02
One of the best practical business texts around. Tom Peters is easily one of the most charismatic of the business preachers today, and the book fits right in line with his style
