Book Description
Based on an International Conference held at the University of Chicago, Other Objects of Desire: Collectors and Collecting Queerly radically rethinks the classic art-historical subject of collecting. It investigates the role played by the conceptual apparatus of contemporary queer theory in understanding different periods of history from the late Middle Ages to the present, and uses this interrogation to critically deconstruct the very idea of a collection and the process of collecting.Beginning with Michael Camille's study of sexual objects of Jean, Duc de Berry, the essays continue with Rebecca Zorach's important questioning of the significance of representations of 'lesbianism' in sixteenth century France. Veronica Biermann's equally groundbreaking work on Christina of Sweden characterises her as conqueror, collector and practitioner of religious and political identities. Christoph Voghterr's essay on Frederick the Great and Whitney Davis's broad-ranging approach to the emergence of the homoerotic collection, both open up the apparatus of a modern episteme of the homosexual and its problematic forms of visibility.Deborah Bright and Richard Meyer examine the more obvious and 'out' visibility of modern American art practices. Here Warhol and Mapplethorpe are characterised as artists whose work emerges from a deeply queer practice of everydayness and seizes upon objects and sexual acts to fabricate a figure of the self as both collector and collection. Adrian Rifkin concludes with a reflection on the virtual collecting of virtual men on the Internet. The volume thus represents a significant collaboration between scholars of different generations and interests within art history, reflecting upon the disruptive and revealing effects of contemporary sex and gender theory on the traditional objects and canons of the discipline. Following on from the achievements of previous feminist and queer writing, it offers a striking overview of current possibilities and a series of important models for future procedure. The fourth of the Art History special issues to be published as a book, it also marks a new collaboration between the journal, its readers and contributors.

Book Description
As quickly as technology advances, users demand more sophisticated graphics and interactivity. In such a fast-paced environment, seasoned graphic artists need constant inspiration. But just as important, they need timely information that helps them make the right software application choices and avoid costly technical mistakes.
How Did They Do That? provides both of these essential needs -- using stunning screen shots that visually profile top broadcast and film work internationally. With examples from well-known companies like MTV, Yu + Co and R!OT Design -- as well as projects from talented independent film makers -- the book explores each program from the inspiration that fueled each work to the software programs and nontraditional techniques used to achieve the end result.
Focusing not on step-by-step details, but on the more advanced information experienced designers need most, this valuable reference shows how the best motion graphics artists break the mold using innovative methods.

Got the book in bad condition.......2006-03-18
Got the book in bad condition, the cover was ripped, the pages were crumpled
Very Well Written with Pretty Pictures too!.......2004-05-19
Mr. Greene displays knowledge of the subject, an eye for the obsurd and unusual, and a passion for motion pictures/pixels. Not bad for a freshman effort...three thumbs up!
Exciting and educational!.......2003-07-18
At last! A book that tackles this potentially dry subject with intelligence, wit and fun! I cannot imagine a reader (tekkie or not) who wouldn't both enjoy and learn from "How Did They Do That?". The author's humor, experience and vast understanding of the subject enfuse this book with richness and playfulness. I have learned and continue to learn many new ideas about motion graphics. The illustrations and photography are beautifully done. In short, Mr. Greene's book is very enjoyable, highly educational, and entirely satisfying.
demystifies award-winners, makes me a winner too.......2003-06-11
This book helps me EVERY time I need help on a new project. It demystifies so many different processes and techniques, I feel more gutsy when I take on new design challenges. A few of my clients also notice that my work has come up to a new level of excellence -- and I know that this book has helped make a difference. Yes, the pictures are awesome, PLUS the writing style makes it so easy understand and even PLAYFUL, which makes studying fun and gives me more confidence in client meetings and when I'm off on my own turning around a project on tight deadline. Also, I find that when I explain technical stuff to clients now, I'm a better communicator because of this book -- and my clients love that, of course. When a book makes a difference like that, it's a rare gem.
An excellent source of information and inspiration.......2003-05-21
Well, *I * really enjoyed this book. It's not just pretty pictures; there is real substance here. It's got an excellent sampling of projects from a wide range of disciplines ranging across Film, Broadcast and New Media. I especially enjoyed the scope of the book in assembling work from both domestic and international artists. The book's strength comes from the quality of the projects and the crisp writeups. It 's fascinating to see where other designers have taken their
creativity and how they have approached their work.
As for the project writeups, they worked for me. The book is written "high level", i.e. no tips and tricks, but is definitely informative and insightful. It's great for quickly understanding how a project was approached from both a creative and a production perspective. All in all, an excellent source of information and inspiration.

This book is wonderful if you want to read a little throughout the day when you don't have enough time to really settle down for a full story. Customer Reviews:
Bagge's omnipresence.......2002-05-30
is, as always, on full display in this second collection of Hate comics. As an ex-slacker from New Jersey, how can I not relate to Buddy Bradley? In fact, we are so similar, I have adopted his name for my email address(how original of me, I know), as you may see. Bagge skewers as many GenX stereotypes as he can cram into each issue of Hate, and for those of us with a sense of humor and self awareness about our goofiness, we are delighted to see facets of ourselves in his panels. Join Buddy as he meets his manic depressive girlfriends' parents, tries to manage a grunge band, and and attempts to keep his trashy, nihilistic part time concubine Lisa gainfully employed. Seattle was never funnier.
Funny easy-read.......2001-11-14
`Hate' is a series which aims for ironic and sarcastic humor. It takes everyday situations and puts in exaggerated stereotype versions of persons who normally walk those scenes (think `easy girls', the rock-fan, the queer, the environmentalist etc.) to make the scene as ridiculous as can be. This collection collects #6-10, a complete story-arc.
Buddy is a guy who gets in situations which are considered normal-life events. Nothing any other person couldn't get into if he went looking for it. The problem is that Buddy is sarcastic to the bone and the people who surround him are all a little cards short from a deck. And Buddy acts on impulse. His comments get him into trouble with his neurotic girlfriend and relatives more than once ... and it's a good thing his fellow-characters can't see what he thinks to boot. In this collection he is asked to come manage a rock-band. The members are talentless nitwits but that doesn't stop them from thinking the world of themselves. After thinking about it Buddy decides to go for it and milk them out like only he could.
A talk-comic which doesn't try to tell a message anywhere but goes for straight-out hilarious fun. Despite of that it does have more than one "been there" situations in it. Think of it as `Box Office Poison' mixed with the sarcastic comments of 'Cerebus'. The black-and-white art is heavily cartoonish and makes for easy reading. It's not what one should decide to buy or neglect it for, but it's acceptable. If sarcasm (up to downright cynicism) is the type of humor you're into, this can definitely be a good choice.
Brilliant.......2000-03-15
Peter Bagge is a comic (and comics) genius and Buddy the Dreamer proves it. His drawing style is unique and fun to look at it, but more importantly, his characters are as three-dimensional and vividly, believably realized as any in current mainstream fiction. Besides that, the stories in this book are side-splittingly funny. Damn it, buy this book already!
Follow the daily trials 'n tribulations of anti-hero Buddy.......1998-06-15
Poor Buddy Baker! Surrounded by a cast of assorted suburban slackers, losers, dweebs, dorks and hangers-on, he valiantly(?) tries to forge a life in the Gen-X capital of Seattle Wa. This collection culled from Hate #'s 6-10 deals with his attempt at managing a grunge band fronted by his genetal-wart infested pal Stinky, the dissolution of his relationship with trust-fund girlfriend Valerie and carnal capers with basket-case pal Lisa. Sharp, crude and true to life, the series holds no punches and paints a merciless picture of 20-something youth in the early 90's.

Book Description
Financial advisers say that practice management help -- particularly with streamlining office operations -- is their greatest single need. Their margins are under pressure. Their once-flush clients are scrutinizing fees. They must slash costs, do more with less, and find time -- somehow -- to spend with the people they advise. Now, two leading financial planners and columnists deliver the help planners have been begging for.
This book is a nontechnical trove of technology, clever workarounds, and procedural efficiencies tailored to help planners move toward a paperless office, while still complying with SEC record-keeping requirements. The authors show planners how to reduce the amount of paperwork in their office by 99 percent and find anything they need in one minute or less by adapting innovative software tools and shifting from on-site employees to remote assistants.
Customer Reviews:
Too Basic and Outdated.......2007-03-30
While I'm sure this book was great when it came out over 5-years ago. Now the book is very out of date and not very usefull. David Drucker should pull this book from the shelfs and give it a major update.
Not just for the professionals -- the customers can learn, too.......2007-01-13
I don't manage money for "outsiders", but I have a lot of paperwork to deal with just taking care of what I do for my "house accounts", and this book has given me great suggestions on how to minimize the paperwork while making it possible for me to actually find the receipts, contracts, account statements, and the like. It's a marvelous fount of information for the consumer of financial advice as well as for those who spend their day dispensing advice.
Virtual Office Tools review.......2005-04-11
Dave Drucker and Joel Bruckenstein wrote a superb practical guide on running and growing a virtual office for financial planning practices. If you ever wondered about how to have more time for your family or personal life pursuits, asked how you could serve your clients better, or add increasingly higher profits in declining or flat markets, this practical guide, written by practicing financial advisors can do more for you than any professional designation after your name. For example, the ability of a virtual assistant a 1000 miles away to annote and populate a scanned document such as a brokerage application with only client specific information, obtain signatures, electronically copy and deliver forms to a brokerage within a few days saves financial planners like me time, money and frustration in dealing with paper document management. With the SEC stamp of approval, there is simply no better way to track and manage docuements. It is like moving from the automobile to the airplane. Leave the traffic jams behind and take your practice to a whole new level with this must-read guidebook.
Get This Book!.......2002-11-08
Are you stuck in the rut of working more and enjoying it less? Have you found your profits dropping while overhead skyrockets? Looking for a way to live your life the way you want to live? If so, buy this book today. In today's difficult investment climate many of us financial advisors have been trapped into doing more service duties, administrative functions and are making less. The authors are living our dream of enjoying the lifestyle we deserve. They show and demonstrate step-by-step complete with specific recommendations of software, hardware and technologies to improve your practice and help you make more money. This well written and extremely interesting book will give you hope and vision to make changes in your practice to enhance your quality of life. I bought this book because I am planning to spend more time in my condo in Colorado and needed ideas on how to do it. The authors delivered exactly what I need to know. As an extra bonus, Joel has been terrific about responding to my questions and emails. Thanks gentlemen; when's the next book coming out?
An Excellent Resource.......2002-10-30
This book is an excellent resource for anyone starting up a financial planning office or seeking to make an existing office run more smoothly and efficiently. A survey of current systems, processes and technology to save a planner time and money. Dave and Joel know what they're talking about.
