Book Description
These photographs, spanning from before the Civil War to the 1950s, reveal a lost world. They show men comfortably sitting on each other's laps, embracing, holding hands, and expressing their various relationships through countless examples of simple physical contact. Rather than imposing contemporary notions of sexuality by assuming the images only illustrate a portion of the gay past, John Ibson returns them to their own time to examine what they meant to the subjects. His perspective unearths a hidden aspect of American men's history. His analysis focuses on the history of male intimacy and how these everyday photographs challenge conventional boundaries between erotic and platonic, homosexuality and heterosexuality. He explores the photos as symbols of male association from a time when America was far more gender-segregated than it is today, and men felt no anxiety about showing their affection for one another. The images present men of different ages, classes, and races in a range of settings: posed in photographers' studios, on beaches, in lumber camps, on farms, on ships, indoors and out. Ibson concludes his study with images from the 1950s, in which the men begin to show a rigid and limited set of expressions. All the photographs are being published here for the first time, and are drawn from Ibson's private collection of more than 5,000 images.

Back to future of American male?.......2007-07-08
Since I came to this country almost forty years ago, I have always felt American males are the most isolated, and handicapped emotionally in the world. I don't classify this book as gay history, but it is a book on visual testaments of male emotions(affections?) when it was intact. This book will give you a smile you didn't know you had. I sincerly, and eagerly wish that we take few deep breaths, and take few backward steps to regain what we have lost not too long ago. LOVE. I thank you for this book.
God, These Men Were Ugly.......2003-03-31
I bought this for my best friend who's gay. I almost hesitated doing so, the men in these photographs leave a WHOLE lot to be desired. He likes it, though, because he has a few of these old postcards, and is a photography buff to boot. So, I supposed just based on that, if someone you know shares that interest, they may like it.
A Major Contribution to the Field of Gender Studies.......2003-02-27
Writing in an erudite, scholarly manner Professor John Ibson has managed to present a substantive survey of the evolution of male gender perception in his PICTURING MEN: A Century of Male Relationships in Everyday American Photography. And for all its heavily researched scholarship, Ibson also has created a very tender elegy about the history of male intimacy, tracing the genuinely warm comraderie as depicted in extant studio and personal photographs rom the mid 19th Century to the gradual emergence of homophobia after World War II.
This is a book that probably is best read twice: the first 'read' should be a slow thumbing through the pages of wonderfully tender and humorous photographs of men in pairs, in poses, in groups of pageant/pantomime, in dorm rooms, barracks, and in nature. The second read should be on of thoughtful attention paid to the written word, an experience which is never cloyingly sentimental, yet ever mindful of the sad fact that our society has created a ban on men expressing tenderness to other men. He wisely shows the tendency to use rough-housing and elaborate greeting techniques to convey the feelings now considered not only 'inappropriate' but worse - as in the 'Don't ask, don't tell' stance of the military. In the most sensitive chapter of this gentile book Ibson studies life in the military from the Civil War through World War II, pointing out both sides of the argument that war and its accompanying terror encourages men to bond, at least psychologically if not sexually. And in keeping with the tenor of the title "in Everyday American Photography" he references the manner in which Life Magazine - that pre-internet, pre-mass media resource which shouldered the burden of documenting for Americans how things were - shows the intensity of male relationships during WW II and its waning in the 1950s.
Ibson is careful to remind us that his picture research comes from his own collection of photographs gathered from swap meets, antique stores, and auctions and that his own feelings are supported by such disparate sources as songs (especially "My Buddy"), memoirs of soldiers, studies of wars by such men as Stephen Ambrose, John Horne Burns, Norman Mailer, and Allen Drury, and movies. In other words, this book stands solidly as a statement about the sad loss of man's ability to accept intimacy, especially when it comes to his fellowman. A beautifully written, highly readable, very valuable book and treatise.
Beautiful historical documentation.......2003-02-26
When my son first told me about this book, he had seen it briefly at a book signing. He told me that it was "a collection of old pictures of men together," and that it was not meant to be eroticism. He was right on both counts, but the book is so much more than that. It is a chronicle--historical documentation of a segment of our culture, a glimpse of part of who we were as a society that might have been lost had not John Ibson meticulously produced this work. Can you imagine that at one time in the not so distant past, men of all walks of life--cowboys, soldiers, athletes, businessmen--felt comfortable enough with each other to display their kinship openly? A hand laid firmly on a shoulder or knee, an arm draped around another man's neck--regardless of sexual orientation, these were demonstrations of genuine affection. I bought the book because I love black and white photography and for that I knew I would appreciate the book's significance. But there is far more there; John's commentary on the culture of our times is well-researched, insightful, and extremely well-written. For historians, sociologists, collectors and artists, this book is a must.

As always John blackburn has given us more erotic episodes in the life of Coley. The story line may not be Hemingway, but combined with John's art it is great. John was my uncle and I keep his book handy to read when I need a little erotica or just want to see some of his work.
A Dark Odyssey into Violence, Corruption, and SEX!!!.......2001-06-09
Eros' "Graphic Novel" reprints of John Blackburn's COLEY books are a big help to readers who no longer have to worry about trying to follow the complex life of his voodoo-endowed bisexual boy-hero in case they've missed a story here and there (as I did when they first came out). "Book Two: Caged Heat" collects a pair of connected miniseries, "WEB OF EVIL" and "THE DEATHSNAKE" (5 issues in all). The first deals with prejudice in a small town, while the second tackles prison corruption. There's less supernatural elements here than usual (if you don't count voodoo love-drugs and an apparent return from the grave!) but the intrigues and complex character interactions more than make up for it, and present a scenario that might remind one of an x-rated version of DARK SHADOWS.
Blackburn's rather art-deco art style is unlike anything in modern comics, and in fact the only comic-book artist his work reminds me of is Harry G. Peters, the original illustrator of WONDER WOMAN-- whose earliest adventures have been considered "kinky", but never THIS much! Blackburn's style has evolved from story to story, and it's almost surprising how much he seems to have matured as an illustrator when you compare his earliest stories to the later ones.
Both stories here contain some of the most shocking violence in the series (and that's really saying something), but WEB OF EVIL also features one of THE hottest sex scenes as well, in its 2nd issue when Coley & his friends decide to put on a public "exhibition". A surprise for me was one of the hottest pages in the book was actually missing from the original printing! Hallelujah for "remastered" editions! Not for the faint of heart-- and NOT to be forgotten by anyone who reads it!

I found this adult graphic novel on the sexual rampage of the main charecter Coley to be purley sexual. The story plot is vague and blotchy but the graphic content is fantastic. Definatly for adults only. If your looking for content and storyline this isnt what you want but if you want nothing but the sexual artwork than its a must.

Tongue in cheek and on the mark.......2001-08-30
This was given to me a few years after graduating from college and I have to admit that it is so true! My goodness...this man must have been following me around documenting my life (yes, I had the troll doll in my cube). From how to pick a roommate to the style of roommate and what to expect from a little old lady landlord (who I happen to have, and she talks to shrubbery, but doesn't charge me the $19.99 for rent as advertised in your book). It's the perfect book to give someone who is graduating college -- or even before!

Dan Zevin's first crack at writing a book has resulted in the finest humor since the famed one-liners of W.C. Fields, Groucho Marx, and Mark Twain. Enough said!!!
Hilarious and hip view of life after college.......1997-03-28
I feel the need to come clean and admit that I'm a friend of the writer, but, in a way, it makes my review more honest. When Dan told me he was writing the book, I thought it was kind of a lame idea. Life after college: so what? And I was terrified that it wouldn't be funny and I would be forced to lie to him.
To my great relief and delight, the book is incredibly hilarious. From the roommates-from-hell section to the instructions on how to write a resume, to life in an office cubicle, this book is a mirror held up to the lives of anyone who ever graduated from college with absolutely no idea of what to do next, but with a his or her sense of humor intact.
A GREAT graduation gift!

WOW! What an absolutely gorgeous book!.......2007-10-01
The story of all the things the old Osage Orange tree has seen is a story of the American west. I enjoyed the story (although it made me sad at the "progress" which has put the old tree in the middle of civilization). What really gives the book its punch is the artwork. It is gentle and calming with amazing detail. While the reading level is listed as ages 9 to 12, this is a perfect lap book for sharing with toddlers and up. Then they'll enjoy reading it to themselves as they get older and someday will be wanting it to share with their little ones. This is a book for the ages.

This is such a great book, not only for my grandchildren, greatnephew
and other children that come to visit, but for adults also. A great unique book, awsome hand drawn illustrations and lettering, that bring the past and present alive in this book. Just makes you wonder what that old tree in your yard just might have to say to you if you would just listen. A great Christmas, birthday or anytime present for your loved ones and especially YOURSELF. It will definately be on my list for Christmas presents for my family and friends.

My children and I love this book, and I enjoy reading it to them! I love reading about history, and this book makes history so likeable. I always let my 6 year old pick out her bedtime story, and it's always Dora, or princesses, or Hello Kitty, which are all cute, but superficial. Not to mention, a snore for me to read to her! An adult can only take so much information about a fiesta, prince charming, or whatever Hello Kitty is baking! Since purchasing this book, it's all she wants me to read, she LOVES the pictures! The detail is breathtaking! You can tell so much time, love, and energy, went into this book. The kids are excited about going to plant a tree!
Superb writing and spectacular art work.......2007-08-31
Once in a blue moon a book comes along that will be of equal interest to children and adults. This book, which tells the story of a tree on the Santa Fe Trail from the time it was a sapling until the current time, with all sorts of activities in between, is excellently written and the art work is unbelievable. I have looked through it many times and each time I find a new detail I had not noticed before, like the cakes and pies at the old time church social. This is a book you will look at and read over and over.

I can remember as if it were only yesterday, sitting in a darkened theater, in the fifth row with my bag of popcorn and soda waiting impatiently for my favorite cowboy to appear on the screen. Now this could be an assortment of heroes to look up to. Let's start with some favorites of mine ~ Hop-a-long Cassidy, Wild Bill Elliott, Charles Starrett (Durango Kid), Allan "Rocky" Lane, Buck Jones, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Johnny Mack Brown, Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, Tim Holt, Sunset Carson, Tim McCoy, Bob Steele, Tom Mix and John Wayne...the list could go on forever.
My favorite side-kick was George "Gabby" Hayes, from the early days of John Wayne, Bill Boyd, Roy Rogers, Wild Bill Elliott and Randolph Scott films...Mr. Hayes could do no wrong in my eyes. He and I even agreed on not liking girls, he would call them "purr-snickergardy" women...and I totally agreed with him at the tender age of nine years old. Gabby could not only make me laugh, but also make me cry...his code of fair play was his bond, and he was always there when the hero needed a helping..."you're durn tootin'"!

First published in 1987. The Ruy Lopez is the most enduring and popular of openings. It was a favourite with Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tal, Spassky, Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov. The Lopez is the ultimate Grandmaster opening. It is also one of the most difficult to learn how to play well. In this treatise International Master Shaun Taulbut guides readers through the right paths and shows how to make this formidable opening a regular point-scorer in their own games.
Shaun Taulbut won team gold in the World Students' Championship, was European junior champion and holds the title of International Master awarded by the World Chess Federation.
Old, But Not Outdated: Variations Change But The Ideas Don't.......2000-03-25
The Ruy Lopez or Spanish, 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 is one of the oldest openings, one of the most heavily analyzed, and one of the best weapons for the White player. How can an older book be of use to someone looking to play this sharp opening? Well, Taulbut's approach focused on the basic (fixed)principles of each line and allowed the reader to choose the specific variation that suited him. So, where other books are heavy on variations and thin on ideas, Taulbut stresses thematic plans that should be adopted by both sides, as well as examining how typical pawn structures and their significance for endgame play. In 15 chapters, the author covers variations such as The Closed Morphy Defence, The Marshall Attack And The Anti-Marshall, Open Variations, Slow Systems, Steinitz System, Exchange Systems, Berlin And Bird Defences, and so on. Only 124 pages, the book is an excellent (and non-intimidating) overview of a complicated opening. You may need (for you Master wannabees) a current book for "state-of-the-art" variations, but for plans? This is the place.

Get correct edition.......2006-01-23
Amazon's listing for this book is very confusing....as seems to often be the case with Amazon. The 5th edition was released in 2003 (ISBN # 0072553928) and the 4th edition was released in 2001 (ISBN # 0072497017). Vastly different books and more care by Amazon should be given when listing books. It can be done.....Barnes and Noble does it at their website.
Be careful when purchasing this book.
Basic introduction with a few bright spots.......2003-02-12
This book serves as a basic introduction to retail, though it often feels like "baby talk". It basically describes, without much analysis, the types of policies retailers adopt in several areas including merchandising, inventory management, ordering, HR, finance, store layout, etc. Good as a reference to what others are doing, but not at the cutting edge of retail.
